Full textAs we inflect the semantics of the Latin noun "medium", we feel we unearth some of the characteristics of Italian literature as female writers from the Balkans compiled it. The thesis, titled Italian female writers from the Balkan migration, is a work that exploits devices borrowed from literature, linguistics and human geography alike, aiming at analysing the complete corpus of authors of short stories and novels in Italian who arrived to Italy following the migration wave that swept the Balkan peninsula in the nineties. "Median" is the geopolitical position of the region, sitting between the European "promised land" and the "East", both myths created by the colonising West; "mediator" is the role of these "subordinate" writers who, having reconstructed an individual identity in their autobiographic works, herald collective messages through a realist prose; lastly, the "medium" is the Italian language chosen to formulate a literature that can sometimes bring to life unexpected fantastic and surrealistic motifs
Declinando la semantica del sostantivo latino “medium”, ci sembra di scovare alcune delle caratteristiche della letteratura italiana redatta da scrittrici d’origine balcanica. La tesi dal titolo Scrittrici italiane della migrazione balcanica è un lavoro che si serve degli strumenti propri tanto alla letteratura e alla linguistica che alla geografia umana, al fine di analizzare il corpus completo delle autrici di racconti brevi o romanzi in lingua italiana, giunte in Italia al seguito di quell’ondata emigratoria che negli anni Novanta scosse la Penisola balcanica. “Mediana” è la posizione geopolitica della regione, a cavallo tra la “terra promessa” europea e l’“Oriente”, miti entrambi creati dall’Occidente colonizzatore; “mediatore” è il ruolo di quelle scrittrici “subalterne” che, dopo aver ricostruito un’identità singolare nell’opera autobiografica, si fanno portavoce d’istanze collettive servendosi di una prosa di genere realista; “mezzo”, infine, è l’idioma italiano scelto per formulare una letteratura matura che può dar luogo, in alcuni casi, ad inattese tinte fantastico-surrealiste

Full textE theme of the urban environment in Italian literature of migration is one of the most significant and, paradoxically, one of the most neglected by the specialists of Italian literature of migration. This volume, after having questioned several theoretical problems such as the definition of this literary phenomenon, overcomes an intercultural approach to the study of these works by achieving new interpretations that could bring to the forefront the latent ideology of the examined authors. Then, by examining the criteria for a successful analysis of the urban environment in Italian literature of migration, this thesis reveals new problems such as those related to the different categories of perception of the city and a number of strategies of appropriation of places developed by migrant characters, as well as a number of stylistic techniques that were defined as "rhetoric of difference". The urban routes of the characters created by some of the most relevant migrant writers appear as an attempt to rediscover the urban memory. In this resemantisation, there is sometimes the tendency of certain authors to build urban myths with the objective of presenting a particular view of the world: this investigation analyses the stylistic techniques related to these myths, trying to make emerge their limits

Full textTra le possibili concezioni del fenomeno migratorio presente nella letteratura magrebina, quella di pensarlo come un evento che sconvolge l’ordine, come una violenza esercitata tanto sugli individui che, su più larga scala, sul modo umano di abitare il mondo, ci sembra oggi un confronto necessario per la ricerca letteraria. Nella misura in cui si concepisce la migrazione come l’evento che irrompe nella vita individuale e collettiva, la scrittura che lo esprime è una scrittura confrontata ad un indicibile iscritto nella soggettività che ne ha fatto l’esperienza. In altri termini, si tratta di una scrittura testimoniale che, nella sua portata etica, resta inesplorata tanto dalla critica della testimonianza, concentrata su altri traumatismi del contemporaneo, che dalla critica magrebina, impermeabile alla riconsiderazione di un genere sospettato del crimine di “lesa-letterarietà”. Nell’ottica di questa ricerca, Habel di Mohammed Dib et La plus haute des solitudes di Tahar Ben Jelloun, in forza delle loro caratteristiche formali e generiche, sono rappresentativi del conflitto relativo a cio’ che è accettato o meno come dicibile all’interno del discorso sulla migrazione. La convocazione di questi due testi pone il problema della delimitazione del campo del racconto di sé e della sua dimora. Tale convocazione solleva un problema più generale legato all’oblio che circonda la dimensione testimoniale legata alla letterarietà stessa, che caratterizza per noi la parola dello scrittore magrebino. In quest’oblio non possiamo forse distinguere l’iscrizione di un legame impensato tra la messa al bando all’opera nella società e la messa al bando di alcuni oggetti del pensiero letterario?

Full textThe study aims to understand the dynamism of cordel literature both in terms of its production transmission ; its partnerships with the country's cultural institutions since the turn of the twenty-first century. It takes the party to study this movement from the Nordeste migration phenomenon that marked the twentieth century and continues to lesser extent, to pour the twenty-first century to the city of Sao Paulo. In order to accomplish such study, a literary analysis of six folhetos written between 1977 and 2013 by poets who migrated to São Paulo was undertook, and the poetic narratives by their testimony and that of professional partners of the cordel literature through the use of the oral history method was completed. It is an interdisciplinary study that, on the one hand, explores the figure and the creative narrative of the poet-migrant, Being in the poetics of the inter, marked by the physical displacement that crosses trans-border imaginary territories. On the other hand, it studies the historicity of the cordel literature of the last thirty years in the light of the phenomena of postmodernity - acceleration and increase of exchanges, globalization, new means, places, forms of expression and conception of identity - through narratives of memory and representations contained in both folhetos and oral history interviews.Thus, we discover that folheto, the support of a metalanguage, can itself be the bearer of an identity project elaborated and transmitted by poets since the beginning of the 21st century

Full textThis thesis has the objective to understand the phenomena defined by Laurent Vidal as waiting territories, which are places where the wait is conceptualized and planned, or territories where the wait insinuates itself into the migration and modifies the perception of the people in movement. The chosen period, spreading from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 2010s, allows to analyze important migratory flows which intensified during these years. To analyze and understand these phenomena, we use literary sources from American novelists. Through the described events - sometimes lived by their authors -, these are human adventures, slices of land of everyday life which are offered to us. This thesis tends to describe at the same time individual experiences, but also collective ones. The pieces of work used throughout this analysis allows to identify the various times of the wait. By analyzing the various novels, two forms of territories of the wait that appear : the first one where the wait causes the mobility; the second one where the movement provokes periods of wait, forced or not. This thesis fits in with a study of the migration, but also in a cultural history through the migration literature, that is to say as a representation of the migration by authors who lived it, but also by authors external from this phenomena

Full textThis dissertation explores Neil Bissoondath' s text and Canadian literary and social contexts of the 80's and early 90's for an understanding of his surprising acceptance among mainstrearn Canadian writers. At a time when it is difficult for visible minorities' writers to have their books published talked about by Canadian criticism, what in Bissoondath's work and in Canadian literary space results in his status as a mainstrearn Canadian writer. Our studies of space and characters search for the signs producing the effect of the work on readers and causing its reception. They reveal a vision of Caribbean and South America as hostile places, where multi-ethnic nations are doomed to failure, of Canada as a refuge where Anglo European humanistic values are threatened by immigrant confinement to community. Our unveiling of the articulation between the reception Bissoondath's work and the reform of multiculturalism reveals that his access to the mainstrearn results from two causes. First, Bissoondath benefits from the institutionalisation of multiculturalism in the field of literature that promotes works by visible minorities ' writers. Then, its reception derives from a convergence between the ideology developed in its text about multiculturalism, celebrating Anglo Canadian values, and the re-defining of Canadian citizenship, that give precedence to common Canadian values over what make Canadians different. This situation of Bisoondath's work, exceptional in the late 80's, becomes commonplace by the of the 90's as it's publishing coincided with the emergence of a new Canadian literary landscape in which distinctions between mainstrearn and minority writers are abolished

Many writers that we acknowledge today as classic authors such as Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), Eyvind Johnson, Harry Martinson and Aksel Sandemose leave the Scandinavian peninsula and narrate the new horizons. What does that kind of relocation of the Scandinavian literary scene mean and imply? How can we link the notion of space to literary writing? How are the landscapes depicted? What kind of identities emerges from this perspective? This work takes focus on four novels and aims to understand the mechanism of the Nordic literary emigration that occurred in Denmark, Sweden and Norway in the beginning of the 20th century. Full textMigratory movements in the second half of the twentieth century have led to the emergence of new diasporas and migrant cultures that have transformed both host societies as well as (im)migrants. This thesis introduces the concept of displacement to see how this phenomenon is propitious to newer identities that challenge the classical notions of diasporas, human relationships and cross-cultural encounters. We will show how the dilemma of be(long)ing - between one’s native country and one’s adopted country in a diasporic setting and rapidly changing non-diasporic settings - is challenging and fashions the ‘dislocation consciousness’. The novels of Anita Desai written from the 1960s to the beginning of the twenty-first century map the displacement and diasporic themes, especially because this writer herself - being a global migrant - reflects her own experiences of appropriation, negotiation and self-refashioning as a deterritorialized individual in an alien society. This thesis will take an interdisciplinary approach (social, literary, demographic, anthropology and linguistics) to study this. We will also analyze how the dialectics of space becomes the cause of identity crisis and a sense of alienation of the human existence and how Desai’s literary art presents and counters them. The focus will be also on how diasporic and non- diasporic spaces have become spaces of doubt, yearning, and possibility and how these new territories can be seen as 'mental as well as physical’ spaces having a capacity to transcend the boundaries of social, political and culture during ‘modernization’

Full textMy dissertation research is focused on the literary production written by authors of North-African Jewish origin. Meaning a literature in exile, in the post-colonial era. My approach includes a prosopographical study, exploring the conditions and the social context that favorized this literature’s creation. The study proposes a classification of a number of authors, linking the sociological characteristics and particular attributes of this generation of writers with their cultural, historical, and cognitive backgrounds. The method uses semi-directive interviews with these subjects, as well as the study of their works, to see whether this “minority” literature can enlighten, and if so to what extent, about the interaction between history, memory, literature, and identity. In this perspective, the social usages and functions of this literature are examined, driving to the analysis of mechanisms and recurring themes that appear as the singular testimony of a moment of lived history. In doing so, it helps us to understand adjustment through literature

Full textThis work is part of cultural studies, more specifically regarding Francophone literatures of the Maghreb and the Caribbean. It will analyze the construction of the women's individual identity in its relationships with the phenomenon of migration in the texts of Malika Mokeddem, Fawzia Zouari, Gisèle Pineau and Maryse Condé. It consists of three main parts. The first replaces the texts and their authors in their historical, social and literary contexts and shows that the origins of identity alienation of female characters are to be found in the collective history, and macho and sexist culture of their societies.The second looks at the different forms of migration which engage the heroines of our corpus to escape a particularly alienating universe and to discover who they really are. Migrations then appear as a compulsory course in the identity construction of the female subject. These real and virtual migrations are on the one hand the crisis factors and deconstruction of identity and on the other hand, tools for the reconstruction of identity and self-Knowledge. The last part analyzes the roles of oral expression and writing in the construction of personal identity of the female subject. The speaking and the act of writing emerge as two forms of migration essential to the reconstruction of identity because they allow the female subject assert its presence in the world and out of anonymity. During these migrations, female characters develop a migrant and plural identity. The development of this migrant and plural identity is accompanied at the textual level with narrative and discursive migrations, so that the writing of Malika Mokeddem, Fawzia Zouari, Gisèle Pineau and Maryse Condé eventually becomes a migrant and plural literature

Full textThe purpose of our thesis is to supply a Mediterranean and literary overview with the writers who experience migration and interculturality. In the first part of our study, we will explore the concept of belonging to the Mediterranean area using a philosophical point of view. With the help of the 19th and 20th centuries’ thinkers, we will first define the Mediterranean area as a “matrix of the civilization” and then, the Mediterranean and migrant literature. We also deal with the actual state of the Mediterranean cultural, geopolitical and social exchanges that perpetuate between the countries of the area; which must be considered in terms of clandestine migration and several conflicts. A study on Pasolini and De Luca, as pioneers writers and experts of the migratory movement, highlights the said concept. In the second part of the thesis, we will take a look at two examples of the migrant literature: a French one and an Italian one. In the French universe we will deal with the birth of a North African migrant literature after the French colonization and decolonization. We explore the arrival of the North African writing, a phenomenon that collides with the need of talking about the invasion, the francophone countries and the migration. The Italian migrant literature is linked with the migration from East Europe – like Albania – and above all, North Africa. These examples testify to the transformation of Italy from emigration country to host country. The third part of the thesis focuses on the Italian example. We will talk about the appearance of a migrant literature by writers who are the sons of migrants; then, we will explore how the migrant is seen thanks to writers aware of the migration phenomenon. We will end our study with Carmine Abate’s work, to point out the arrival of a generation full of committed migrant writers and their visions of the question. To sum up, our study’s path tries to show the actual state of the Mediterranean area with a special measurement unit: the migrant literature

Full textThe travels of African students in a colonial situation are a recurring subject in Frenchspeaking African literature of the 1950s. At the time of de-colonial, political and ideological struggles, some writers such as Cheikh Hamidou Kane, Camara Laye or Aké Loba have put the experience of cultural colonization at the heart of their literary work. Their writings, aboutthe study trips of the main characters to France, are based on a spatial and existential isotopy: a dead-end migration, based on many betrayed promises, dreams with broken perspectives, experiences of deathly dereliction. The study of the literary device of the progressive disenchantment of these characters – African, colonized students – allows to shed light on thesubjectivation process that shapes their barred horizons. Indeed, the ideological deceit of the colonial endeavor hides a movement of existential capture that grabs the character and makes them subjects of domination. Since the turning point of political independencies, the literary outlook on those failed adventures keeps interrogating our present times. These beings, stretched between spaces and universes of opposed values, question the negotiation of postcolonial identities. As if, by entering the mold of the colonized character, by going to meet its mechanisms and models, we had an appointment with the modern-day shapes of their globalized development

Full textThe present research focuses on authors who, in the context of contemporary migrations, write in Italian even though they have a different mother tongue or they are bilingual. We aim at showing in which way these works, written in a language other than one's own, can illustrate the notion of ostranenie (that is, turning what is familiar into something strange and foreign) introduced by the Russian formalists to describe artistic creation. We carry out textual analysis along three main dimensions, corresponding to the three section of this work: the multilinguism, the evolution of literary genres, the importance of the literary work in relation to the world.In the first part (Italian Babel, chs. 1, 2, and 3), we analyze the linguistic thread of these texts, in order to see in what way and for what reasons these authors create a literary language through the relation between Italian and a different language. In the second part (Writings, Narrations and Poetics, chs. 4, 5, and 6), we consider the context of these writings, as well as of genres and narrative forms, seeking patterns of composition underpinning the poetics of these authors under different literary traditions and power systems allowing for the emergence of authors and texts. Finally, in the third part (The Conflicts of Narration, chs. 7, 8, and 9), we draw the consequences of linguistic and narrative choices at work in the texts we researched. The observation of the images and the ideologies promoted carries us to the questions lying across these texts. Such consequences offer opposing viewpoints both on current Italian society and on the place of the subject in a postcolonial perspective

Full textIn the panorama of contemporary Colombian literature, Jorge Franco (Medellin, 1962) and Juan Gabriel Vásquez (1973) are two writers whose works, as rich as varied, have granted them an undeniable acknowledgement within the field of literature written in Castilian. Since movement and the cross between different itineraries set the cadence of the fictional universes of their novels, this thesis explores the principal characteristics of diverse types of dynamics of displacement in their works, particularly in Jorge Franco’s novels Paraíso Travel (2001) and Melodrama (2006), and in Juan Gabriel Vásquez’s Los informantes (2004) and El ruido de las cosas al caer (2011).This displacement, whether chosen or under duress, whether planned or spontaneous, appears in the works of each writer in the form of travel, wander, evasion, escape or exile. This work mobilises thereby the concepts of centre and periphery, nation, immigration, first and second language, placing the crossroad of culture and the opening of horizons at the heart of reflection.To what extent the drama of Colombian history represents a major trigger for evasion in the novels of Jorge Franco and Juan Gabriel Vásquez? How travelling to the past constitutes a tool of collective work in order to find a generational identification? Why and how the transposition from one space to another can be the origin of the transformation of the individual? Finally, to what extent these textual itineraries are the key to artistic creation? This thesis closely observes the dispersal of space and time: a superposition of paths that galvanises the writing’s route.The work opens with a study of death as a discursive and fictional trigger, since it launches the start of literary quest as well as the creation of space by the act of walking. Wandering and escaping, both understood as metaphors of that great journey towards death that defines life, are inseparable from the dynamic of writing. Likewise, the analysis takes a look at the relation between the fictionalisation of death and the spectrum of the erasure of the auctorial stage. Therefore, different notions such as origin, starting point, destination and point of arrival are combined with other notions such as transit, passing, prolongation and continuity.Displacement also combines the exploration and the creation of urban space, within a dynamic that endeavours to enlighten both the dark spaces of cities like Bogota, New York, Paris or Medellin, and the most obscure zones of their history, during 20th and 21st centuries. By analysing the literary approach of recent history, this part studies how memory, fear and displacement are the clues to understand history. Furthermore, this chapter takes an interest in temporal travelling; a subjective and “disordered” convocation of the past and different degrees of temporality: two aspects that are connected to a filmic construction and a chronotopic dynamic of the tale. This temporal journey proves to be necessary for both the generational identification and the comprehension of the self.Finally, this work analyses the undertaking of a cross-border journey, a motif that implies questioning notions such as idealisation and exoticism, which are conditioned by the physical displacement throughout territory, nation and their limits. Therefore, both writing from the distance and writing the distance lead to the study of the figure of the writer as a traveller. Trespassing boundaries resonates with the universality of wandering and facing history at the dawn of 21st century: an opening to new horizons that facilitates the comprehension of traumatic episodes of history.By studying the dynamics of displacement in the works of Jorge Franco and Juan Gabriel Vásquez, this thesis actually wonders about the place that both writers accord to the wanderer subject within a moving world

Although studies in immigration literature are burgeoning in Europe, there are still gaps to be filled, such as a well-established corpus of works by European writers of Asian origin. The first part of this dissertation presents the key concepts in immigration literature studies, such as the notions of migration and cosmopolitanism, and the necessary considerations in the constitution of a corpus of immigrant writers of Asian origin, as well as an overview of current research in this field. The second part, comprised of three sections, firstly explores the elements that condition these authors’ access to the literary field in France and in Britain, and secondly, the characteristics of their writing in terms of style, structure and theme. The final section attempts a typology of the corpus of novels in French and English by immigrant writers of Asian origin, offering an overview of the richness of an integral part of European literary creation
본 논문은 프랑스와 영국에 기반한 아시아계 작가들이 최근 20년간 출간한 소설을 통하여 아시아인의 유럽 이민에서 비롯된 동시대 문학의 유형론을 제시하고 있다. 유럽에서 이민 문학 연구가 활발히 이루어지고 있지만, 아시아계 유럽 작가들의 작품에 대한 상세 코퍼스 정립과 같이 아직 채울 부분들이 존재한다. 본 논문의 제 1부는 이주, 국제성과 같은 이민 문학 연구의 주요 개념을 소개하고, 아시아계 이민 작가들의 코퍼스를 형성함에 있어 고려 사항을 비롯하여, 이 분야의 연구 현황을 개관한다. 모두 세 장으로 나눠진 제2부는 우선, 프랑스와 영국 문학계에 대한 이들 작가의 접근을 규정하는 요소들을 살피고, 문체, 구조와 주요 테마의 측면에서 이들 작가의 글쓰기의 특징을 밝힌다. 마지막 장은 아시아계 이민 작가들이 불어와 영어로 쓴 소설 작품으로 이루어진 코퍼스의 유형화를 시도하여, 유럽 문학 창작 활동의 풍요로운 한 분야를 보여주고자 한다

It exposes the fragility of the human being who finds himself in a situation of radical change and turbulent transition. Owing to the violence involved in the process, the subject is plunged in a position of acute vulnerability and the representation of this aspect in francophone literature and cinema is striking and powerful. This work examines the difficult life of the migrant and the violence that is exerted on the latter from three main axes; the starting point or the point of departure, the voyage and the point of arrival. The authors and filmmakers who, in their works, deal with the figure of the migrant or include it, reveal the complex reality of the experience of migration which, in Western collective consciousness, is usually truncated, simplified and/or dismissed completely. The study of the literary and cinematic representation allows for the exploration of the artistic strategies employed to transmit the experience to the reader/spectator and for the establishment of a network of connections which concretises the suffering and the torment that the Other, caught in the snare of migration, endures

Full textThis thesis examines the literary representation of migration from a colony to the imperial metropolis in the period of decolonisation through a comparative analysis of novels by Anglophone Caribbean and Francophone Maghribi writers about migration to Britain and France respectively. A major point of convergence is the focus on the relationship of domination. Lamming, Chraïbi and Kateb address this explicitly as a colonial relationship that is psychological and cultural as well as economic, whereas the 1970s writers Boudjedra and Ben Jelloun place both immigration and colonisation within a wider framework of capitalist exploitation. The difficult material conditions and the racism targeting immigrants are not depicted for their own sake but are the occasion of a wide-ranging critique of European modernity. Maghribi writers attack the rationality of Western civilisation as oppressive, whereas the Caribbean novelists focus on the colonial roots of attitudes to non-Europeans. Both sets of writers nonetheless provide responses to European colonialist discourse and to the positive self-presentation of the coloniser through the manipulation of narrative point of view and voice and through the theme of mental breakdown. Most of the novelists set out to refute negative representations of immigrants by restoring aspects they feel are neglected, in particular the emotional dimension of the immigrant experience and the colonial determinants of the relationship between immigrants and natives. In doing so their representations of immigration often conform to the immigrant figure underpinning the discourses they attack. Their preoccupations are distinct from those of later writers and recent discourses about Caribbean and Maghribi populations in Britain and France : with the exception of Selvon and, more ambiguously, Mengouchi and Ramdane, the novelists are not interested in the process of formation of ethnic-diasporic minorities in France and Britain

As a former host city for a large Jewish community and even today for many immigrant workers and refugees, a large majority of whom are Muslims, Hohenems truly embraces a long intercultural tradition. A microhistorical approach makes it possible to question the reasons and the motivations that in 2009 enabled the establishment of a literary prize for migrant authors who write in German though they are non-native German speakers. Through the concrete example of this prize, we examine the management of cultural heterogeneity at the local level and the impact of the literature of migrant authors in the German-speaking world that leads to the birth of intercultural and cross-cultural writing

Full textIslam, Muslims and Pakistan have been obsessively under discussion, particularly with negative portrayals, in the mainstream media and scholastic colloquy in the post 9/11 period. This research project is an attempt to represent some of the misrepresentations which are familiarized along with political lines for making an unknown a known. The decolonised representation of such misrepresentations is needed to understand this phenomenon and the ideologies working behind the scenes for popularizing these unfamiliar representations of/by fundamentalism and fundamentalists in comparison with misrepresentations of/by liberalism and liberals. Thus, the thesis is divided into three sections; a) Fundamentals of Islam and Fundamentalism, b) Neoliberalism and Neo-global colonialism, and c) Social Misrepresentations which are breeding psychological trauma for humanity in the post 9/11 era. This project highlights the variant aspects of the reluctance of fundamentalism in post-postcolonial contemporary Pakistani literature, both in English and Urdu, analysing comparatively the similarities and variances, both exclusive and inclusive, of its extensive canvas The contemporary world of English Literature in Pakistan and the different approaches provide material for examining who is who and what is what, in order to determine the underlying motives at work behind the scenes, especially the schools of thought encouraging extremism of all kinds, working against peace and harmony in favor of violence and terrorism. Literature, in this context, is a mouthpiece of the Age. We will be analysing the social misrepresentations using Moscovici’s theories of social representations which are used to familiarise the unfamiliar or defamiliarize the familiar. Similarly, Roy’s theory of facts in fiction is utilised for analysing contemporary Pakistani literature (examples are taken from Mohsin Hamid’s and UmairaAhmed's contributions) as a mouthpiece of the twenty-first century while examining Chomskian views of neocolonialism. Full textThrough diverse realities of France and Italy and exploratory trips to Senegal the researcher investigates the fundamental aspect of the migratory phenomenon: the return. What psychological impact does the return have on individuals and populations involved? How does the return affect intrapsychic and intersubjective dynamics? The study is based on the survey of the Senegalese migrant population displaced in Europe. Three fields studies were conducted in Senegal between 2014 and 2018. The research includes the interviews with 20 "return migrants" and 11 key informants. The thesis is composed of five parts. The first part of the thesis is empirical part which is dedicated to data analysis. The researcher uses the methodology inspired by the Grounded Theory. The second part consists of the literature review. Given the previous studies that considered the social and clinical phenomena linked to the “desire to return” from very different perspectives, making the theoretical overview demanded great efforts. The aim of this doctoral research is to produce a theory defining a completely new field of investigations. Therefore, in the third part of the thesis the researcher analyses case studies against the existing literature in order to propose two new theoretical notions indispensable for the understanding of psychology and the psychopathology of return: “migratory in-between” and “non-return”. The ternary model (return, “non-return”, “migratory in-between”) enables our understanding of the migratory experience and allows to define the psychopathology of the return migration. In the fourth part of this work the researcher presents and discusses the cases from which he develops and describes the notions of ritual migration, the object of migration, the return itinerary, the return tickets, the rights of return and the code of return. Thanks to this thesis, we will try to see whether all the contributions brought along via migratory movements toward, inward and outward Caribbean have been acknowledged by the culture of the host countries. The study is divided in three parts: the first will present the concepts and the historical background alluded to in the novels and short stories, the second will consist in a textual analysis, the third will focus on some authors' points of view. Full textThis research focuses on young people of immigrant background with the aim of investigating the distinctive manner in which this community relates to literature as a means of expression. The hypothesis we explore is that these young people, whose life tends to be especially permeated by history and contemporary global issues, may find in literature a third space of cultural expression, alongside family and society. As the various images arising from a collection of short stories created especially for this dissertation - Exister à bout de plume. Nouvelles migrantes – succeed one another, it emerges that fictional and autobiographical writing enables those who resort to it as a means of expression to find their own voice and gain deeper self-awareness. The first part of the dissertation is dedicated to field research, while the second part provides analyses of the short stories and the interviews of the authors. The analyses reveal how important it is to make visible the problems, struggles, feelings, hopes and claims of young people of immigrant background, especially in times in which the bitter fruits of the assimilationist model and the social fractures this model was unable to prevent become more and more apparent. The young amateur writers reclaim their cultural background and their appearance emphasising themes such as the search for personal identity, the obstacles and ambitions characterising their first steps into society, the search for legitimacy and the desire to narrate, more or less explicitly, the personal trajectories of their parents. The engagement of this community with the literary means appears to be motivated by the desire to reclaim themes that tend to be considered exclusive purview of dominant literary voices. The literary means seems to allow the authors to escape the role of mere object of sociological and anthropological investigation and become Subjects narrating themselves from their own point of view
L’oggetto di questa ricerca è il rapporto alla lettura e alla scrittura di una comunità di giovani di seconda generazione d’origine immigrata. L’ipotesi formulata vede nella manifestazione letteraria la concretizzazione di un terzo spazio d’espressione culturale e di autorappresentazione, tra famiglia e società, che si giustifica attraverso le questioni storiche nonché contemporanee che questi giovani si trovano ad affrontare nel loro percorso di crescita ed evoluzione personale. Analizzando le rappresentazioni risultanti da una raccolta di racconti creata ad hoc per questa tesi, Esistere in punta di penna. Racconti migranti, si spiega il modo in cui la scrittura di finzione o autobiografica riesce a simbolizzare una presa di parola importante che permette agli individui che l’utilizzano d’avere una migliore coscienza di sé. Attraverso una prima parte dedicata alla ricerca sul campo e l’altra basata sull’analisi delle interviste e dei racconti della raccolta, emerge l’importanza di rendere visibili domande, problematiche, sentimenti, speranze e rivendicazioni dei giovani d’origine immigrata in un’epoca, la nostra, in cui il modello assimilazionista mostra più che mai il sapore amaro dei suoi frutti e la sua impotenza di fronte alle sempre più laceranti fratture sociali. Mettendo in primo piano temi come : l’indagine identitaria, gli ostacoli e le ambizioni che caratterizzano i loro primi passi nella società, la ricerca di legittimità e la voglia di raccontare, direttamente o meno, il percorso dei loro genitori, questi giovani scrittori alle prime armi, si riappropriano attivamente del loro bagaglio culturale e della loro apparenza fisica. Full textOften times, German so called ‘literature of migration’ has been the subject of general studies which regroup several authors. This work, exclusively dedicated to the work of the Syrian-born (1946) German-speaking author Rafik Schami, intends to reindividualize the work of this author and to consider it in its historicity and evolution. Building his work largely upon his 'Oriental' origins all-whilst writing in German, Schami instrumentalizes his prose, intertextual references and his own public and literary persona to connect himself to a certain lineage of discourse on the Orient and the Western reception responding to that discourse. From a dual approach – one socio-poetical, and the other text-analytical –, we examine on one hand the many postures of Schami's 'intercultural' authorship as they relate to storytelling between the East and the West, and on the other hand consider his work as an inquiry of power relations inherent to the interplay between the center and the periphery. Somewhere between popular literature and belles-lettres, the intercultural fictions of Rafik Schami are an attempt, even at times ambiguous, to introduce the Western reader an ‘elsewhere’. This 'elsewhere', sometimes portrayed as the world of the worker or the immigrant in Germany, some others as an Arab world vaguely defined and staged as an "Arabia", and most frequently as Syria, or Damascus and its surroundings in particular, forms the core of Rafik Schami's work. It is through the 'elsewhere' that Schami aspires to raise cultural awareness in his readers, and aims to interest them in the lives of the minorities and of the unvoiced groups and individuals whose stories he tells

Full textSince the beginning of the 1990’s, Italian literary world and critic have been interested in linguistic, esthetic and social issues generated by Italian immigrant literature, in which we find writers of various backgrounds.Nevertheless, there is a group of authors displaying distinctive features whose members originate from the Horn of Africa. Their literary works participate to a renewal of interest for Italian colonial domination as well as for the debate on the introduction of postcolonial theories and the existence of a so-called Italian postcolonialism. Conversely, the interest and the development of postcolonial studies promote authors’ writings.Italian colonial domination in East Africa was rejected and hidden for a long time and still today it is a difficult issue to deal with. How can authors express their sense of belonging to former colonies in a country that has never looked at its colonial past? Our thesis statement is that writing enables the authors to restore understanding to often contradictory identities and thus rebuild their own space, both with regard to their social and ethnic background and to Italian society where these operations take place.This work aims at exploring how writing stories represents a strategy intended to make identity reorganization possible. The analysis of their favorite subjects will allow us to show whether this reorganization also conveys an unprecedented imaginary world from the Horn of Africa or if the necessity of finding a space to exist prevails over this really innovative storytelling

Full textThe mass planetary migrations set into motion by the historical and political transformations of the last years of the 20th century are disrupting current national status quos, while populations are undergoing a re-mixture of identities and languages that has produced hybrid cultures and, from the strictly literary point of view, a challenge to the legitimacy of national canons. The pluri-language transnational literatures are drawing an ever-wider map of a new literary universe made up of ubiquitous, unclassifiable writers whose production in prose and poetry escapes genre definitions, emphasizing the linguistic dynamics inherent to these writings in transit. How does Italy fit into this new pluri-language literary scenario? With what results and prospects? After a first introductory chapter, in which a general framework of Italian-language transnational literature is presented from its official beginnings at the start of the Nineties until today, my research focuses specifically on poetic Italophony. Locating its birth back in the early Sixties – the decade when the first « compelled » migrations to Italy began –, transnational Italian-language production is for the first time analyzed through a chronologically ordered panorama of poetic voices, against which the most representatives ones are silhouetted. Stress is laid on the literariness of the texts, and Italian contemporary poetry is always present, in perspective, to trace the relationship that is being created over time between the different expressions of poetic writing « in Italian »

Full textVisual metaphor represents a recurrent process in Shaun Tan’s picture books as he uses it to question the reader’s gaze, in a way reminiscent of surrealism. Drawing on Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory, this thesis considers metaphor as a meaning making process. Kress and van Leeuwen’s systemic functional approach to images accounts for the links between visual processes and meaning, and Forceville’s categories provide a basis to analyze the visual metaphors. The study of Tan’s metaphors reveals that this thinking process and its visual expression make it possible for readers ranging from adults to children to access the non literal meaning of his albums. Contextual metaphors of the USA and Australia denounce contemporary society’s choices regarding migration, through a fable in The Lost Thing or a utopic graphic novel in The Arrival. In Tales from Outer Suburbia, verbo-pictural metaphors question the relationship between men, animals and nature. Emotions and human relationships are evoked and questioned through conceptual metaphors of depression in The Red Tree, and metaphorical representations of social codes through the games shared by two brothers, in Rules of Summer. A study of Rules of Summer in Kindergarten shows that young children perceive the inadequacy of a literal interpretation for many of the represented elements or scenes, and that they try to justify their interpretations. Tan’s images can thus successfully contribute to developing the metaphorical competence of children

Full textBeginning with an analysis of the Slavic vision of vampirism and its attributes, our dissertation traces the various stages of its development in Western European literature and culture in the 18th and 19th centuries, before examining the factors responsible for the growing notoriety of Serbian vampire "cases" in the 1730s. The numerous philosophical and theological treatises concerning this "superstition" substantiate the fact it was considered a pathological adjunct of ignorant peoples. Eighteenth century entries in dictionaries stress the distended aspect of vampires bloated with blood, the fascination for which can be measured by the plethora of official texts "proving" their existence. The image of the vampire in 19th century literature exemplifies Western European society's quest for identity, and it is within this framework that the vampire came to connote infirmity and unquenched desire, with the pale and bloodless body becoming the allegorical representation of deprivation

Full textLatin American migration literature is only recently a subject of study in European academies; the present thesis addresses this by dealing with the subject from a gender perspective. The gender question, understood as a performative attitude which creates norms and models but also a-normative beings and uncategorisable bodies, is at the centre of this work which, more specifically, brings into focus the politics of representation of those bodies and migrant subjectivities. Full textThe dialogue between poetic and choreographic writings offers the possibility of a reflexion about the fundament of the artistic creation and allows observing the existing distance between the subject and the world that embraces him. Both kinds of writing imply movement, as an image of a displacement of the usual connection to the world. The poetic sight focuses on a landscape’s perimeter, in a spatial as well as in a conceptual level, and generates a plurality of readings andinterpretations. In the field of dance, the transformation of a usual sensation to a gesture filled with intentions, conveys the signified and opens an interpretative line. In his literary work, the writer and poet Andrés Neuman questions, in a formal as well as in a thematic level, the notion of frontier and the simultaneity of temporalities and spaces. This opens a dialogue with dance expression and the poetic of the haiku, both considered as an instantaneouswriting that only lets the immaterial memory of their image, as a trace of their emission

Full textSince Ancient Times, thinkers and writers have in large numbers been struck by political exile. In return, this situation has influenced their work and literature as a whole. In the second half of the 20th Century, this literary tradition has been deeply transformed by the surge of totalitarian regimes, and the struggle with democracies which these regimes have provoked. This new political context has induced a large increase of writers in exile, but also important structural transformations, forcing the exiles to modify their own images, the themes of their work and their communication strategies, and also the nature of their writings. The comparative study of the works of Jorge Semprún, Christa Wolf, Julio Cortázar and Alicia Dujovne Ortiz allows us to discover common aesthetic changes between these politically committed writers, who have flown respectively from Spain, Germany, and Argentina, and to note the birth of a new form of writing

Full textThe present study proposes an analysis of the function of “death” in the literary fiction of MATSUI Tarô (1917-2017), a leading author in Brazilian Japanese-language literature. A comparison is carried out with the oeuvre of Andrei IVANOV (1971- ), a key author in Estonian Russian-language literature. This thesis is built around Michel Picard’s argument, which proposes that in the literary field, “when we speak about death, we always speak about something else”: “Firstly because the core of the matter is to circumvent the insurmountable difficulty of temporalizing [materialising] the timeless [immaterial] moment of death, but mostly because of the actual preoccupations […] that certainly only concern life. These [preoccupations] themselves have clearly revealed that they [are] no more than symptoms, metaphors of some sort; that the crux of the matter, in this topos as well as each time that “death” is concerned, is unconscious.”After examining the historical and political contexts of the communities in question – the “Japanese” community of Brazil and the Russian-language community in Estonia – this thesis questions the ways that the Japanese-language literary world has been constructed in Brazil. Other questions are then raised: why does “death” appear so frequently in Matsui Tarô’s literary fiction? What are the functions operated by these deaths in his and Andrei Ivanov’s oeuvre? If the subject matter addressed by the two authors is not death per se, what are the real preoccupations at stake? Is it the past that dies, in a way that it seems to be the case in Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard? How does Matsui Tarô relate to this past? What about Andrei Ivanov? How do they choose, be it unconsciously, to see the past and to dialogue with it? This study shows that while “death” functions, in the literatures of Matsui and Ivanov, as a privileged vehicle conveying the criticisms that the two authors address to their respective communities, it is also used as a tool to communicate a vision for the future of these communities — that is, the proposition of a complete assimilation. The element of “death” points out the reasons why these authors refuse constructed concepts such as “us” (i.e. an isolated community)

Full textWritten with the vague memory of the novels of formation of the beginning of the industrial era, the novels of Marcel Proust, Osman Lins, Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul, Joyce Carol Oates and Roberto Bolaño return with melancholy to a question that has marked modernity: how do we record the story of the arrival in a big city? In Search of Lost Time and Blonde examine the worldly rituals at the heart of the capitals transformed by war. The absence of order produces enigmatic forms: in the image of the kaleidoscope, the spiral, the labyrinth and the city of sand, these forms arrange the writing of the urban space and the narrative that leads into it. The Enigma of Arrival links those processes to the problematics of migration, global language and the multicultural empire that has taken shape during the second half of the twentieth century. The work of Lins brings together urbanity, esoterism and elements of intellectual worldliness: imitation, quotation, bibliography. The urban becomes a satire in Bolaño: his arrivistes and his careerists, who are poets and teachers of literature, belong to the family of mass murderers. The novel of urban formation, now available only as a lost object, a target for nostalgia under the sign of regret, merits thorough reevaluation. Seeing that the vegetal metaphor points to stylistic processes of decomposition that bring together de-urbanization and the emergence of the life of the mind, the writing of plants may lead to new possibilities of individuation, less motivated by the worldly pulsion that characterizes capitalistic narratives, and bearing more discreet traces of the non-instrumental and involuntary, more violent inscription into nature

Full textThis research paper questions the identity claims (territorial and political, individual and collective) in a corpus of engaged speeches. The decision was to work from speeches of progressive parties, engaged novels from the 1970s-1980s, life stories and accounts from “the Children of Creuse”. The analysed texts highlight the construction of a political model of state supervision and blame a process of decolonisation that stifles particularities and stigmatises the Creole identity. The claims focus on empowering the making of political decisions and considering the regional specificities. These local particularities, either geographic, linguistic or cultural, are defended as defining elements of Reunion's identity. However, the Reunionese identity is represented in a conflictual process in which the cultural elements are organised in a hierarchy. The analysis of the issue of the building of identities during the postcolonial era shows an inevitable correlation with the organisation of the colonial society. The structures of domination, transformed after 1946, correlated to the effects of the departmentalisation and globalisation, hinder the construction of an assertive identity. In this context, the literary speech becomes a means of resistance and allows the subordinates to claim the speech back to themselves and bring another version of the history. This thesis questions the concerns of the building of the Reunionese identity in the context of social and political transformations and by considering its consequences on individuals. It also emphasises the absence of consideration of colonialism and its contemporary impacts in France

Full textThis thesis offers collocational readings of traditional and postcolonial epics in transcultural frameworks. It investigates the specificities of modern postcolonial epic through a comparative analysis of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, Derek Walcott’s Omeros, and Amitav Ghosh’s Ibis trilogy. It explores how these works emulate, but also rival, the traditional epics of Homer, Virgil, Ariosto, Camões, and Milton. Both traditional and postcolonial epic rely on generic conventions in order to aestheticize collective experience, setting it against the natural world (via epic similes), against history and imperial destiny (via genealogy and prophecy), and against the epic work itself (via ekphrasis). However, traditional epic emphasizes a unified worldview, characterized by harmonious conjunctions between trope and diegesis, genealogical continuities between ancestor and descendant, and self-reflexive ekphrastic associations between imperial history and the epic text commissioned to glorify it. From this perspective, the specificity of postcolonial epic can be formulated in terms of its ambivalent articulation of the postcolonial condition. In the works of Melville, Walcott, and Ghosh, tropes of heroic transfiguration are held in check by the mock-heroic, while empowering self-adopted hybrid affiliations co-exist, but cannot entirely compensate for, discontinuous genealogies marked by displacement, deracination, and colonial violence. This ambivalence finds its most powerful expression in the ekphrastic sequences where the postcolonial texts are most directly confronted with the impossible choice between commemorating experience and being critical of such commemoration

Full textThroughout the 20th century, Costa Rica built its own national identity on the “purity and whiteness” of the Costa Rican race. This is the identity paradigm in which the Jamaican population found itself upon arriving on the Caribbean coast in 1870 in order to work on the construction of railways and the banana plantations. This black, non-Spanish-speaking community was a barrier to the Costa Rican national identity project. However, the year 2015, marked a turning point. In virtue of an amendment to the first article of the Constitution, Costa Rica redefined itself as a “multiethnic, multicultural Republic”. This thesis retraces the complex process of integration undergone by the Costa Rican Afro-Caribbean community from 1870 to 2015. This study claims that the existence of this recent reconfiguration of the Costa Rican identity paradigm was in part fostered by one of the country’s most peripheral areas: Limon. The works of linguists such as Robert Le Page and André Tabouret-Keller have proven that linguistic choices can be considered as “identity claims or acts” by means of which a given speaker demonstrates his identity, his background and his aspirations. The people from Limon, by means of their sociolinguistic and identity claims, have thus helped start the aforementioned process of reconfiguration. The well-established use of Creole English clashes with the government’s official policy regarding the use of the official language of Spanish and the indigenous languages. Even though Creole English is spoken in Limon, in 2010 UNESCO classified it in its Atlas of the World’s Endangered Languages. Is there thus a campaign of revitalization in Costa Rica concerning Creole English? In an attempt to analyze the changing identity paradigm from an intersemiotic perspective, this study has chosen to focus on Caribbean literature and art as they both represent powerful mediums through which the expression of the Caribbean identity is portrayed and claimed

Full textExile is a condition of displacement and a phenomenon that affects great masses of people today. Although this experience exists since the proverbial beginning of time, its parameters are changing in the present context of globalization, which transforms the role of nations and where societies are characterized by greater mobility and cultural diversity. The profound psychological and cultural transformations of identity – inward and outward – to which people are confronted through displacement can be understood as a condition per se, an exilic condition. This condition with moving marks, and which develops in a discontinuous temporality and as a necessarily painful experience, has been the source of prolific literature and of literary studies in the 20th century and before. How, differently then, does the 21st century gaze at this condition ? In this thesis, four works are analyzed in which the authors present different visions of the exilic condition. Two main lines of thinking have been explored around this condition: Edward Said embraced a critical and political posture while Julia Kristeva conceived of exile in its psychological dimensions. Within these analytic perspectives, Mourid Barghouti’s autobiography has affinities with Said’s approach as it inaugurates an autonomous condition. Through Rawi Hage’s novel, a more psychological experience of exile is observed, one that is more violent and traumatic. It sheds light on the undeniable impact of the environment on the experience of exile in the host country. If the relation to the host country stays dysfunctional, a pathological attitude to the exilic experience may develop. Abla Farhoud’s novel explores the possible overcoming of the pathologies of exile through distance, age, time, and words, the distance needed for Dounia. Finally, the psychological limitations of exile can be overcome by translating the “unspeakable” in violence, by a return to the pre-exilic traumas, and by a collective sharing of this restorative work. Mouawad’s play also exposes the psychological dimension of exile, but it also maintains its critical and political ones. We observe through these analyses that the exilic condition demands a redressing of the traumas that preceded exile, understood as another trauma, so that the exiled can exist in an autonomous, creative and committed way in his or her society of adoption. For the last three authors, this society is Québec, which shows openness to, and comprehension of, the major issues of the exilic condition in the 21st century.
