Full textThis research examines the letters of Paul of Tarsus, as preserved in the New Testament within the context of letter writing of that time, principally Judean ones. The initial examination questions both the potential of sources such as letters to provide information about an era, and the specific pragmatic potential of the epistolary medium as a means of inducing change in its recipients. As such, the letters of Paul were written not to conserve the historical realities or truths of the past, but to communicate efficiently with diverse circles and various recipients. The two-part examination is used to gain a perspective on the practices of the time, which may have been used as models for epistolary writing. The letter addressing the Judean Diasporas exiles inserted into the narrative of the Book of Jeremy (chapter 29) is such a model, providing a means of communicating over distance and time among the different groups. The epistolary practice of Paul himself is then examined. In particular, his Second letter to Corinthians (chapters 10-13), written in a moment of intense self-examination as his apostolic authority was questioned, is a good example of the pragmatic potential that Paul recognised in the epistolary medium, particularly in light of the prophet Jeremy. Finally, the beginnings of the apostle Paul’s epistolary writing and it’s reception are explored, showing how his credibility as an apostolic authority was quickly and easily recognised as being of the same quality as those of the prophet writers of ancient Israel
Paris, EPHE, 2001. http://www.theses.fr/2001EPHE5042.
Full textWas Paul of Tarsus the "father" of the Christian epistolary praxis? After inscribing his praxis in the epitolary framework of Antiquity and checking it against the rhetorical analysis widespread in the field of the Pauline studies, this Ph. D. Put first forward a model of his epistolary utterance built from a literary analysis of his letters, which rely on the enunciation theories. It compares subsequently Paul's letters to the pseudepigraphical epistles attributed to the apostle : it proves that Paul was not followed, even by his own successors. It relates finally the model to the other epistles of the New Testament and to the epistles of the Apostolic Fathers and concludes that the Pauline epistolary praxis was only a realization of the potentiality of the ancient letter and was in competition with other praxis : the continuation of the ancient praxis and another Christian praxis, the "memorial-letter"
Fleury, Pascale. "Un rhéteur latin à l'âge de la seconde sophistique : recherches sur l'utilisation des genres et motifs littéraires dans l'oeuvre de Fronton." Paris, EPHE, 2002. http://www.theses.fr/2002EPHE4019.
Full textThe Frontonian corpus is heterogeneous. In his works, we have identified three types of literary expressions traditionally associated with the epistolary genre (recommendation, health news, letters of wishes), the other, motives at the same time close to letter-writting and having an independent utilisation (fable, consolation), the last type having no connection with the epistolary form (paradoxical praise, éroticos, practical oratory, historiography). We have chosen to leave aside in our analysis the sub-genres of the letter and to lay down a binary structure : the first part of our work is devoted to ludic genres (paradoxical praise, éroticos, fable), the second to serious genre (practical oratory, historiography, consolation). This division seemed more fit to bring fertile conclusions. As a matter of fact, the elements of each group must go through the same type of analysis : Front, in the ludic genre, plays with tradition, with the limits of the genres to reveal his conception of life and rhetoric ; conversely, in the serious genre, the rules of the genre are in general obeyed. However, in the ludic and in the serious genre, Fronto favours an epidictic expression of reality

Full textThe thesis examines the identity of hetairai (courtesans), their literary roles, and their voice by engaging with the production of rhetorical discourses in the erotic letters of the Imperial period, specifically focusing on works such as Alciphron's Letters of Courtesans, Philostratus' Letters, and Aristaenetus' Erotic Letters. The content of these letters not only portrays the personal relationships between the courtesans and their clients, narratives situated in a historical context, but also explores the underlying connections between the epistolographers and their readership. These connections are influenced by the cultural context in which they lived, namely the Second Sophistic. The primary focuses of the research are the construction of the epistolary erotic discourse, the gendered portrayal of the courtesans as literary figures, and the reception of seduction and manipulation techniques at a fictional level. My aim is to investigate how, during the Imperial period, relations of allusion and rewriting contributed to the re-evaluation and consolidation of the figure of hetaira
Reich, Franziska. "Cadeaux et communication dans les correspondances latines d'Occident (IVe - VIe siècles)." Thesis, Strasbourg, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018STRAG013.
Full textLetters from the 4th to the 6th century A.C. show a significant number of gift-giving situations. These have never been systematically analyzed in late antique history. Interpersonal gifts might be interpretated as acts of communication, not only as objects passed over from hand to hand. In order to determine the interaction between the giver and the addressee, their choices of media and the desire of tansmitting messages throught objects, a differenciated analysis is important. With the help of well-established tools from communication studies, the work at hand presents an alternative method for approching gift-giving in Late Antiquity
Cavuoto-Denis, Nicolas. "Vsus scribendi : le projet littéraire de Symmaque dans les Lettres, les Discours et les Rapports." Thesis, Bourgogne Franche-Comté, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020UBFCC023.
Full textThe three collections produced by Symmachus, the "Letters", the "Discourses" and the "Relationes", have been very harshly criticised by the literary critics and have been studied to a great extent with an historian point of view. Symmachus was mocked for his outrageous traditionalism, for his political and religious stubbornness and for his pompous style: he is particularly known for the first book of his Correspondence and for the fight against Ambrose, bishop of Milan, as eloquent as him. However, although he is no longer appreciated, he was very admired by the authors of the 4th and the 5th centuries: we want to analyse with a literary approach these three collections, in order to understand their originality, their eloquence and their inspirations (the reasons why he was so admired). The thesis aims at showing the literary and cultural traditions these texts belong to. Indeed, we will also try to analyse the machinery of the social life into the "Circle of Symmachus". In short, we focus on the idea of Tradition (mos maiorum) because literary (usus scribendi), cultural, social and historiographical traditions are in the middle of the Symmachus' ideal of the society
Ferrari, Nathalie. "Pratiques épistolaires et modèles antiques dans la France du premier dix-septième siècle : la lettre de consolation." Paris, EHESS, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003EHES0111.
Full textThis work is about the pratice of th consolation letter in France during the first half of the seventeenth century. It is based on a comparative approach. The letter's composition follows the model of the Antiquity. The representations used by the writers draw a parallel between Early Modern France and Ancient Republican Rome. Letter is analyzed as a specific discourse and as a place of ancient Roman civilization "survival" (A. Warburg). The reconstitution of the practice that induces it and references to Antiquity it contains bring to the fore the caracteristics of the consolation letter's writing. Two hypothesis are checked in order to explain the obvious ubiquity of the Roman model : the first on concerns the historical transmission of the ancient inheritance which makes available such reference, the second on concerns the analogy existing between two social structures which makes its appropriation possible in the Early Modern society with some displacements of this model. Those alterations are made visible in the study of Roman consolation that ends this work

Full textThe first hypotheses on the compilation of I Corinthians date back to the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries. At that time in research history, the first arguments were formulated in support of or opposing the composite nature of the epistle. Since then, research has only slightly progressed : ancient rhetoric and epistolography. .

Full textThe thesis comprises 417 pages, regarding the collection of the 20 Letters attributed to St. Anthony the Great in the Coptic-Arabic tradition, and performs a comparative analysis between the second group of Letters in this collection (8-20) with the parallel Letters of Ammonas in the other versions (Syriac, Greek, Georgian). The thesis consists of 3 parts. The first addresses the Egyptian cultural of the primitive monasticism, the education of Antony and his heritage in the Coptic-Arabic Tradition; The second addresses the text history and works on determining the original text, authenticity, the author of every Letter, the identity of Ammonas as bishop of Oxyrhynchus and Paphnutius, the quotations taken by Shenoute and Besa and Stephen of Thebes discourse, The third part is dedicated to the analysis of the 13 Letters, and a comparison of the doctrine of Antony and Ammonas, such as the Origenism and gnosis of Antony compared to the non-philosophical narrative of Ammonas
