Full textMauritania is a multi-cultural and multilingual country labouring to become a nation. This former French colony is situated both geographically and culturally in-between the Arabic and sub-Saharan worlds. As such, the French language competes with Arabic in the workings of the Mauritanian State and its education system. Francophone Mauritian literature, whilst still an emergent literature, now counts over eighty written texts by authors living in Mauritania and in France. This thesis aims to present an exhaustive inventory of all francophone Mauritanian literary works for the first time. This work takes a pedagogical format, comprising: a biography-bibliography of the authors; a presentation of each of their literary works; and a comprehensive study of each literary genre encountered (poetry, novel, short story, theatre, essay, children’s and youth literature, newspaper columns / journals, non-fiction and autobiographical works)

Full textIn this research, I investigate the particularities of the contemporary francophone feminine novel from Maghreb, Mashrek and sub-Saharan Africa or France. The corpus I study is composed of feminine and masculine francophone novels written by authors coming from these various areas. I use narratology, socio-criticism, psychoanalysis, psychocristicism and mythocristicism in order to bring out aesthetic and generic characteristics. Through these analytic methods, I analyze the components of the novel: the style, the context, the interiority and the imagination. Based on the examined elements, I establish the poetics of the francophone feminine novel. Some features of this genre of novel refer to “the androgyny of imagination”, “cross-culturality” and “ego-histoire”

Full textBased on the features of mythological, historical and tradition ogres, this thesis questions the rehabilitation and timeliness of the myth of the ogre in a corpus of texts from the most varied French territories. The thesis is structured into five thematic chapters. The first chapter focuses on the birth of the ogre as myth and iconic character of culture and oral tradition in different territories. The second chapter discusses the regimes and tyrants which reign in the ogre: if "ogre" is the name for any tyrannical leader and dictator, he is represented in the texts by a variety of names and faces. In continuation of this research, the third chapter deals with the myth of the ogre from a social and familial perspective. The new avatars of the ogre in the contemporary are the fathers: destructive fathers, suffocating/degrading ones, and practitioners of a metaphorical cannibalism. Excessiveness lies in the violence with which they govern their families. In a Freudian perspective, the fourth chapter focuses on the relationship (sexual) impossible between parents and their offspring generated by symbolic castration, incest and sexual debauchery. The final chapter builds on the declination of the female ogre, ogress in the proposed body. Stunning character, which taking the most seductive forms, is inside only a monster ready to satisfy all her desires of any kind. The revival of the myth of the ogre in contemporary French prose is all too visible

Full textFrench orientalism and French-speaking Tunisian literature are the expression of socio-cultural and politico-economic relations between France and Tunisia. During the XIXth century and at the beginning of XXth century, a mutual attraction links these two countries: France likes the exoticism of Tunisia and this one likes the modernity of French people. Literary and pictorial works are the evidence of this reciprocal interest. But imperialism changes this relation: the image of the other changes and the other becomes the enemy. Then we witness a proliferation of stereotypes for French people and a self-defining fall for Tunisians. After Independence, in France, the French exiles and the Tunisian immigrants know the same uneasiness : rejection because of difference. A complete integration and/or a communautarism are then consequences of this racism. In Tunisia, the westernized government disappoints the people: Tunisians are pulled between tradition and modernity, dream and reality. Literature is the oriental way to express disillusion, critics, identity. Franco-Tunisian relations are subjected to the hazards of History and Mankind; nevertheless, today, they remain friendly

Full textThe title of the theses is Study of Tragic Perception in Francophone African Literature, and the pratical corpus, the novels of Senegalese philosopher Boubacar Boris Diop. It comprises three parts. The first part elaborates a philosophical theory of tragic perception through philosophical, sociological, psychological/psychoanalytical, historical and literary works. In fine it shows that fiction lends itself to tragic expression. The second one applies this theory to the fictional corpus of the above author, thus confirming the indirect question in the first part. The third part completes the second through the study of Francophone critics' reception of Diop's works. Diop believes in African renaissance. Like Nietzsche before him, Diop asserts " I have the right to consider myself the first philosopher of the tragic, that is to say the opposite and antipodes of a pessimistic philosopher". Full textThis research seeks to read the contributions of interlanguage in the novels of Francophone sub-Saharan Africa. This linguistic and sociolinguistic notion sees its first research orientation with Selinker (1972). American researcher attached to the linguistic and psycholinguistic aspects of the learning of a foreign language by adults with the elaboration of the term "interlanguage" to account for the intermediate knowledge of the learner in a foreign language. For this author, as for other researchers who have oriented research on the notion, the interlanguage is a "transitional skill" (Coder, 1967), an "approximate language" (Nemser, 1971) characterized by real instability Especially since the grammatical rules of the interlanguage do not correspond to the rules found in the mother tongue of the learner or those observed in the target language: in general, the interlanguage is not intended to evolve towards a better Practice of the language.However, the observation of interlanguage in the texts of novelists in French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa calls into question this definition of the first researchers: in the texts, the interlanguage increases the lexicon of vocabulary, reuses structures Syntactics to innovate the syntax, in addition to that, it diversifies the figures of styles to embellish the existing stylistics. The lexical rejuvenation is visible through the introduction of borrowings, codical alternations, layers and neologies. At the syntactic level, there is an unusual use of syntactic tools as well as determination, pronouns, punctuation and insistence of morphosyntax features. To these structures are added the maxims and proverbs presenting in fact stylistics as a diversified textual element.The sociocritic of Zima is the approach around which we hold this information. It presents itself here as a perspective that best identifies the sociality of the literary text. It opens the way to the analysis of the interlanguage which it has identified in works. Thanks to it, it is discovered that this concept calls for the cultural coexistence of peoples with different microscopes. It raises the diversity of cultures and evokes multilingualism and interculturality, two important lungs to define the institutional, linguistic and literary Francophonie. The principles advocated by the notion of interlanguage can restructure the France / Africa relationship

Full textThis thesis schematizes, in Malicroix by Henri Bosco, the process that presides to the writing of the novel itself. Using a poietic approach, we consider the text as a writer’s poetic that takes a fictional form. A phenomenological perspective allows us to study the novel from the point of view of perception, and mythocritique enables us to reflect on the perception of the world – especially the world of the text – through the angle of the sacred and its symbols. Reconstructing the horizontal and vertical structures of the novel, we reflect on diverse aspects of the text and of the scriptural process. The reading horizon constitutes the first chapter of our thesis and offers a triple view on the novel: the story and the characters, the spatiotemporal context and the mythical point of view. In the second chapter are elaborated two central notions, the figures and the chronotopes. Two groups of figures emerge, one associated with the writer as creator of the text and the other, with the process of expression. The figures play distinct roles in the conception and expression and are represented in Malicroix by way of the characters. The chronotopes study divides the novel in eleven times-spaces that constitute the basis of the figures’ progression through the text. The third chapter details how the figures cross the chronotopes’ series, drawing the scriptural route inscribed in eleven successive situations in the text. The last chapter contains two parts. The first examines the writer’s poetic that Bosco published under the title « L’exaltation et l’amplitude ». The second, which constitutes the final objective of our study, integrates the elements of this writer’s poetic in the eleven successive situations, producing a description of the stages of the scriptural process followed by Bosco while writing Malicroix.

Full textTo arrive at a configuration of emigration in the literary, francophone space, we chose authors from different areas, focusing on some representative novels of the French J. M. G. Le Clezio and Michel Torunier, a Belgian writer, Pierre Mertens, one from Luxembourg, Jean Portante, and two Romanians, now French residents, B. Nedelcovici and D. Tepeneag, all illustrative for a thorough study of this phenomenon. Writers were included who had an external perspective on it, and also others who had themselves undergone the experience of emigration. Moreover, these works feature characters from different cultural backgrounds, leading to diverging and converging patterns making up the aforementioned configuration. The question we have considered regards the definition of expatriation and the way(s) it is experienced. The analysis highlights the transformations the heroes undergo, a series of fractures on different levels; even if mostly negative, they are eventually overcome, hence my thesis statement that the phenomenon of emigration implies, concomitantly, gains and losses. Our approach examines, sequentially, the crisis leading to exile, the entailing psychological trauma, the identitarian issue, the cultural experiences and the identification of the positive stages that allow for the surpassing of obstacles. These aspects highlight a common feature: the negative aspect is dominant, especially on a psychological and identitarian level. The positive facet is present only in some works, at the end of the heroes' quest, which allows for a synthesis of these experiences of gains and losses into a configuration so peculiar to an old and yet persistent phenomenon

Full textWhat is "author's fiction"? By this theme we designate a set of literary texts that focuses on the making of a character writer and the reception of the fictional book. This phenomenon was born in French literature following two consecutive publications on the death of the author. These acts of death of the author have thus generated the author's production parade in the French novel to try to revive him. They introduced the principle of immanence leading to the erasure of the author in favor of writing. Thus, without trying to confront the different literary fields, this thesis constitutes a panorama of the identifying elements of a writer's character in the French-speaking novel and a means for the author to reveal to the readers the underpinnings of his writing profession. To capture the anchor of this fictional novelist in the French text, this study is based on literary sociology and literary poetics

Full textThis thesis is divided in two main parts : the study of novelistic patterns and the problems of writing. The first part deals with biographical elements, proving that the chosen authors, nathalie sarraute, mohammed dib, rachid boudjedra, tierno monenembo and sony labou tansi, all felt a desire to break with their original literary style. The composition of the novels, both internally and externally, has been studied in order to prove how the presentation, the introduction and the dedication create a meaningful whole. The division of text (chapters, intertextual references, typography) has also been analysed in terms of its relevance to the novel. The last section of this first part studies the time and space elements within the novel. The second part of this work is focussed on the difficulties presented by writing. The first chapter deals with character study (classification, psychologie and inter-character relationships) and the second chapter deals with the narrator's status (wheter first or third person, etc. ) finally, the third chapter studies the varied uses of the french language through style and above all the reader's responses to this

Full textIn the field of francophone literature, there are currently about twenty French-speaking Chinese authors : Cheng Ki-Tong, Sheng Cheng, Cheng Ching, Francois Cheng, Gao Xingjian, Shen Dali, Ya Ding, Dai Sijie, Ying Chen, Wei Wei, Shan Sa, and Ling Xi... These writers circulate in different cultures, use two languages, and consequently their writing mixes a Chinese color with a Western one. Through their experiences, we note that some of them have developed a double artistic practice, in accordance with their cultural identity, which is now dual. They thus build not only a bridge between two languages and two cultures, but also a bridge between different media or artistic supports (novelistic and film or pictorial). How has Chinese francophone literature developped itself ? And how can we understand the novelistic writing and the artistic practice of the French-speaking Chinese authors ? Focused on French-speaking Chinese authors and their works, our research formulates a hypothesis about the articulation between interculturality and intermediality within the Chinese Francophonie

Full textThis thesis question the notion of family in connection with mass Killing : the genocide of the Tutsi of Rwanda. It was developed on two main axes. A point of history presented the socio-historical determinants which favorised the extermination of the Rwandan Tutsi. Then a literary analysis established a correlation between the idea of family and this extreme violence, through a corpus of French-speaking writers and survivors of this event. What opened up the study of the Tutsi génocide from the only historic point of view to make a literary subject. In this research work, our subject insisted on the situation of the families which resisted and on those who were decimated in front of ambient genocide. And informed about a tragedy which weakened the links of filiation within the members of the same household and broke the relationship, the brotherhood between nearby families. This study also presented the possible configurations of the family institution after the genocide. It showed that with the massacres which deconstructed the household the survivors to begin an impact strength, recompose of new sibships, new families

Such a literature has its roots rased in oral sources (folhlore), identification criteria with the problems thus raised regarding literature and finally the present dimension of this literature in back french-speaking Africa. The second part has been devoted to the theme of the referential which had led us to demonstrate the philosophy which lies under the writing of these texts. Thus in the third part we have been induced to state that, along with the different aspects of the referential, books actually open out on to the blackafricanworld. Those are real spaces of initiation the African young reader will enter so as to get a better understanding of the world around him and in order to achieve his integration

Full textMigration is one of the most disturbing and soul-searching issues in the contemporary world. It exposes the fragility of the human being who finds himself in a situation of radical change and turbulent transition. Owing to the violence involved in the process, the subject is plunged in a position of acute vulnerability and the representation of this aspect in francophone literature and cinema is striking and powerful. This work examines the difficult life of the migrant and the violence that is exerted on the latter from three main axes; the starting point or the point of departure, the voyage and the point of arrival. The authors and filmmakers who, in their works, deal with the figure of the migrant or include it, reveal the complex reality of the experience of migration which, in Western collective consciousness, is usually truncated, simplified and/or dismissed completely. The study of the literary and cinematic representation allows for the exploration of the artistic strategies employed to transmit the experience to the reader/spectator and for the establishment of a network of connections which concretises the suffering and the torment that the Other, caught in the snare of migration, endures

Full textThe study of tragedy is enriched by 20th century French West Indies writings beyond proper dramas. Indeed, written in a disillusioned world and a pessimistic era of the post-colonial struggle, they allow heroism, the relationship to the epic and history to be considered differently. The collective dimension of failure and unrest thus replaces the exemplary nature of the traditional hero and leads us to state that the sense of tragedy does not only stem from the sight of an emblematic hero being implacably crushed, but also from the dilution of all spatial, temporal and identity markers as well as of the idea of transcendence - to which is substituted a work on the background that undermines obviousness. The textual, narrative and para-textual patterns explain the conditions that give birth to tragedy. The aim is not to work out a new definition of tragedy, but to show that this literature can enrich our vision of an aesthetic category which is too much confined within a sole corpus

Full textThe colonial novel has long been the "only approach" apprehending the settlement. Unfortunately, it produced a sexual imaginary about Africa excluding the speech of the colonized. Africa is a place of pleasure, a "sexual Eden", and all the natives have "lust stuck into the body". Curiously, this imagology does not influence African literary works. Rather, Africa and its literatures have been considered as real bashful spaces. For many reasons the African author chooses avoidance strategies. He uses a series of stylistic processes to veil it, to make it seen in the absence or silences. This scriptural reserve dominates francophone literary production in sub-Saharan Africa until the 1960s. During this decade, an iconoclastic generation arises, and breaks with this representation. A more transgressive type of writing appears. Henceforth, the African authors seem to refuse the “indirection”, the roundabouts, and the narrative ellipsis. They are part of what Michel Foucault calls parrhêsia, a speech of truth. Thus, this perspective focuses on the need to say things as they are. This allows the emergence of what we call the sexualiture, which means literature giving the sex an important place. The present study examines, on the one hand, the process of this emancipating written form, linked to feminism; it analyses, on the other hand, the links between a poetic modesty as guarantor of a restrained discourse about sex, and the insolence of an authentic line expressing a legitimate pursuit of freedom

This design, in a certain manner, unconsciously harmed the image which one could have of this literature. It is from the Eighties, after the collapse of the Communism, that the concept of literary engagement seems, to be constrained to evolve and to renew itself putting more and more the African writer in a rather uncomfortable situation divided between the desire to remain a political writer, near to his people concerns, and the desire to assert a creative autonomy. Nowadays, if the question of artistic engagement makes debate again, it’s certainly not a question of chance according to the confused and dubious time we must cope with. Indeed, we attend a loss of the reference marks and ideals leading the men of thought (intellectual, writers) to adopt writing projects, i. E. Engagements, different in their work of creation. What are the interrogations that were faced or are still faced to the sub-Saharan committed literature in this universalization era? Full textThe sociocultural context proves to be a major element in the identital approach of the francophone writings of JP, of RD and AB. Our own approach has tried to follow a synchronic dialectic one through various fictional episodes which constitute the field of research of our study.In the latter, the intercultural element is reconsidered as a concept leading to the rediscovery of the motif of otherness as a clear-cut distinction coming from a sense of belonging which, in turn, guides the writer's behaviour in a way which is different from what the notion of transculturalism usually implies. This idea of transculturalism supports the idea of universality and of multi-ethnic social cohesion by putting forward a polymorphic version of cultural influences which determines the features of individuals within the same society. It is also meant to point out the negative aspect of globalization as an assimilation process within this transcultural pattern which is part and parcel of the literary work.We have specifically laid the stress on the writers' narrative characteristics in order to enhance the recurring themes closely linked to the idea of identity. As a result, the internal dialogue shows a fictional swing between two determining human conditions: disenchantment and passion resulting from an obvious contemporary reality. Full textLong confined to the margins of literary history, the short-story genre in French-speaking Africa has often lacked visibility among critics. Between a long-standing latent disinterest and nascent scientific research today, the short-story has for too long been absent in the African literary field. However, this peripheral posture seems inaccurate and incongruous nowadays, when one revisits its historical trajectory, and especially when we consider the interest that some writers take in it. Having achieved its autonomy as a genre, the short-story can no longer be considered a « premature novel », an « illegitimate genre » etc. This obsolete and old-fashioned vision is here reassessed, and allows, somehow, to direct the critical gaze (on its forms, its favorite themes ...), towards a more objective conception, built from the latest developments of the genre. Like the other narrative forms, and perhaps even more elaborately, the short story, in the French-speaking world, addresses the authors’ social experiences, summarizes their vision of the world and shows the process of its evolution in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is the overwhelming evidence of the observed and experienced reality of the short-story writer in a given time period in the history of his society. The short-story genre takes on the task of bringing to light, with a touch of realism, the worries and phenomena behind the dislocations and transformations of African societies. Based on new social representations taking place in Africa, it bears witness to a transformed Africa, stubbornly oriented towards fundamentally modern structures. For this reason, this genre tends to claim a new perspective, based on a debate devoid of any bias which has impacted it so far

Ensuite, l'œuvre de Félix Leclerc nous amène à interroger le travail de l'auteur québécois, dans une configuration plus trouble que ne le laisse supposer le mythe d'une opposition bipolaire entre anglophonie et francophonie. Enfin, avec l'étude des possibles identitaires dans le roman de Kane, nous discutons l'évidence d'une identité africaine monochrome, pour mieux évaluer la pertinence d'une lecture plurielle des cultures africaines en littérature.
En définitive, il apparaît dans notre travail que l'éthique de l'auteur francophone est celle d'un sujet libre. Libre de dépasser les contraintes du biologique et de porter dans son œuvre les marques d'une « alterculturalité » assumée.

In what is unquestionably nowdays called french speaking maghrebian literature, this divorce with the calssical tale is already noticeable with kabed and later with did, khair-eddine, meddeb. . . (1960 - 1970). From the eighties, a resurgence of the rale characterisesthe texts of a wide range of novelists. T. Ben jelloun, r. Mimouni, f. Mellah, v. Khoury-ghata (lebanon) are part of what we may call the "neo-narrative tendancy". However the return to the tale is not at all a return to the lineary balzacian tale. On the contrary it is a reconciliation with an old-time tale drawn from aral and written traditions, here made into written patterns. A "strict pasticle" is the means with whitch hypertexts converse with hypotexts (popular accounts, coran, thousand and one nights). With the exeption of a. Cossery (egypt) parodying an external pattern this time (detective novel), the first four ones strictly imitate an "ancestral model". What means that ? why this respectious pastiche of "ancestral pattern" ? why the pasticle rather than the parody when it is about internal models ? is it linked to the question of identity ? it certainly is. Full textThe first step of this study is to try an “essay of a theory for the present litérary writing in the french-speaking communities of Africa”. Secondarily, the purpsose was to give another definition, through “another reading”of the african french-speaking literary fact, the nature and the function of the dominated contries literatures. In a historicity perspective, it appeared that the african french –speaking literature, in its all, has been set-up since 1930 in an “autonomous” social word, which general copyrights are principally based on the cultural catégories, knows as the “oral” and “traditional” ones. On a pratical point of view, the oral way and the african oral tradition, far to invariably be the extension of the proclamation of a “negro soul”, are essentially the “ rule of the african literary game”. Subjects of stakes and places of tensions, the oral way and the oral tradition are used by writers of the african field, in their need of structural setting up: the pioneers (Césaire/Senghor) for the maintaining of their “dominant status”; the pretenders (Pacéré/Zadi) for their pretentiousness for the “classicism”. Strategically beneficial and symbolically rich of resources, the oral and the traditional items suffer from all kind of amplifications, of magnifications and extrapolations (speechs relating to the identity, manipulation of the roots and the purity, arguments of the sacred and secret ). Full textAn important literary production emerged and developed in Egypt from the end of the 19th century until the 1960's: Egyptian women educated in French culture (like Out-el-Kouloub or Doria Shafik) chose this language to write the ambitions of the “new woman”, who was abandoning the private and confined space of the harem and investing public space to loudly proclaim cultural and social demands (feminism, nationalism), despite secular reluctance and resistance from conservatives. At the same time, French women such as Jehan d'Ivray or Valentine Saint-Point, settled to live in Egypt, and became witnesses and actors of this cultural renaissance. These authors adopted various literary genres such as the novel and poetry but also the essay or academic writing, publishing in periodicals or founding magazines in order to express themselves. They question the contradiction between so-called women's and men's literary genres, while contributing to the creation of intercultural literature which encompasses both French and Egyptian traditions. At the same time, they propose a reassessment of the representations of women and the East. This women's literature forms a large production which nevertheless remains relatively unknown as it is rarely republished or read today, even though it often received considerable attention from both readers and literary institutions at the time of publication. This thesis builds a corpus, identifying, collecting and classifying the works before analyzing them. It appears as a major concern in today's world and thus of the African society of today. Recurring theme of sub-saharan African literature in french, through characters torn, suffering from psychological conflicts or crises of identity, it motivates this study who wants to do an investigation on the issue of identy in five African novels. It aims to highlight its literariness and therefore identify issues both semantic and aesthetic at work. Thus, it shows how the organization of strata enunciative that structure works reflect the identity of why battered of how the bruise spreads and lives and strategies for recovery of identity. Organized into three parts, one revealed by analysis immanent, the unveiling of the vacillations of identity from the narrative construction of heroes. S'en follow the narrative course content axiological contradictory, reflecting the d iscrepancies of their Being. The second part refers to a disorientation of the characters in space, base their search for identity. The last axis, with the help of social psychology highlights strategies winbacks identity made by the protagonists. However the search for identity ends in a stalemate because the existential question remains. Total, enrollment of discursive identity invests the text in both content and form and can be read in a singularity in language, itself in search of definition and empowerment. Full textThe study of space in novels from french-speaking africa between 1970 and 1990 affords a clearer perception of the evolution and specificity of this literary output through reference to a vast and diversified literary corpus. The first part looks at the relationships between space, action and narration. These reveal in particular the profound instability of the characters whose story is often organized around the traditional opposition between town and village, the movement between the two being a sign of a deep-rooted malaise, an impossibility to adapt in a world in crisis where all identificatory bearings are shifting or have disappeared. The status of the narrator is another sign of this problem of identity. The second part analyses the relations between space and society. It shows how far political demonstration remains central to the novel, determining the status of the characters, the events related, the places described, etc. As the african novelist sees his task as the denounciation of the scourges besetting the continent, all spatial representation tends to be limited to this problem. One of the most striking symptoms of this is the omnipresence of carceral space in these texts. A third part, inspired by the works of g. Bachelard and g. Durand attempts to bring to light the recurring imaginary structures which emerge from the works. Although some symbolical patterns demonstrate a certain faith in existence, a positive sense of rootedness in the native soil, pessimistic images and symbols prevail. The world portrayed seems most often destined to slow decomposition, condemned to sterility and inexorable decline. The writing evokes images of infected water, destructive fire, mineral erosion, seething animal life, excrements, mud, bottomless pits, chaos, etc. , depicting a universe labouring under an implacable curse
