Full textThe medieval encyclopedia aims at being a work of compilation and scientific disclosure at the same time, with a strong moralizing nature. The history of this genre has two periods: the transmission of the classical legacy and and the assimilation of the Renaissance of the 12th century. Its great historical significance, since it eluded censorship, leads us to choose Acerba as representation of the medieval world. The survey of the manuscripts reveal the original title: Acerba etas, which means, according to connotations of the term "acerba" in the work itself and its ontemporaries: the terrestrial life, in the sense of material and ephemeral, image of its eternal and spiritual reality

Full textAnseïs de Carthage is a chanson de geste from the first half of the 13th century, composed of rhymed, and partly assonanced, ten-syllable stanzas. It belongs to the King’s Cycle and the Carolingian branch of medieval epics. The text tells the story of Anseïs, Charlemagne’s nephew, who becomes the new king of Spain after the final emperor’s victory over the Saracens and the liberation of the Iberian Peninsula. From a narrative point of view the Anseïs’ chanson represents a narrative continuum of the Chanson the Roland. After a general introduction about the poem, our thesis proposes an in depth study of the manuscript Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, français 1598, called C in the text’s manuscript tradition. It is the only codex transcribed in Italy by an italian copyist: it conserves an “italianised” linguistic version of the chanson, especially at a graphic and phonetic level. Because of its peculiar linguistic facies, this manuscript has never been studied individually and its lectiones have never been used for ecdotics purposes. In our work we propose the whole semi-diplomatic transcription of the ms. Paris, BnF, fr. 1598 and also a systematic analysis of all the linguistic levels. In the same way, we approach the matter of the franco-italian branch of the Anseïs de Carthage manuscript tradition, which includes the codex C and the two fragments h and i. Through our study we will try to demonstrate the ecdotic interest of C, h and i and we will try to add some new linguistic and philological data to the Anseïs de Carthage research

Full textThis work is composed of two parts. In the first one, I critically analyze how Boccaccio was read by the main theorists of the novel (Schlegel, Hegel, Lukács, Bakhtine, Auerbach); once described individually, these authors are later confronted with each other. A third chapter deals with new perspectives in the theory of the novel, which provide the foundation for a new interpretation of Boccaccio’s Decameron.The second part is devoted to Boccaccio’s works in themselves. First, I analyze Boccaccio’s rewriting of the dantean episode of Paolo and Francesca (Inf. V). In the same chapter I also discuss Boccaccio’s theory of the fabula as it is developed in his Genealogie deorum gentilium, by focusing on crucial issues such as allegory, knowledge and consolation. I conclude the chapter with an inquiry on the Filocolo’s narrative framework; particular attention is devoted to the episode of the «Questioni d’amore» and to its functions in the economy of the whole work. The second chapter puts forward a new reading of the Decameron, based on the notion of ‘compassion’; I analyze the Decameron’s narrative framework on the ground of philosophical and ethical categories. I also explore how the beliefs’ device is shaped by Boccaccio; the chapter ends with an enquiry around the concept of fortune, its theorization and representation in the Decameron. The third and final chapter is devoted to the individual interpretation of five novellas (IV, 4; V, 1; II, 7; II, 9; X, 10)

Full textThis doctoral thesis presents, almost in its entirety, the critical edition with commentary of the exegesis of Petrarch’s Bucolicum carmen by Francesco Piendibeni of Montepulciano, an Italian humanist of the late Trecento. The exegesis, completed in Perugia in 1394, is preserved in the autograph manuscript Città del Vaticano, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Pal. lat. 1729. The work as a whole has remained unpublished until today; only Antonio Avena, in 1906, provided a simpletranscription, partial and imperfect, of some glosses. The edition contained in this thesis aims at being innovative; in effect, it not only establishes and critically analyses a text which has remained unknown for a long time, but also makes it possible to delve deeper into the knowledge of Petrarch’s bucolic poem, to better assess how it was received by the scholars who came after him and to shed light on the exegetical tradition of early Humanism. A fundamental source for Piendibeni was Benvenuto da Imola’s commentary on the Bucolicum carmen; an unpublished transcription is provided here, based on the manuscript Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, lat. 8700. Finally, the list of known manuscripts belonging to Piendibeni has been updated, so that, for the first time, his library has been exhaustively reconstructed

Full textWhen studying rusticale poetry, the principal problem faced is that of language. The latter almost never aims at representing the peasant's world but it designed to create a comical effect, although some aspects of reality, often satirically targeted at the peasant and sometimes the political power, emerge from the texts : moreover this language can be used to parody the topoi of elevated litterature, particularly lyrical poetry. In this case, rusticale poetry can be considered as a variation of the giocoso genre
