Abstract:
This study explores the role of social media in influencing the littering behavior of tourists and examines its relationship with attitude change, social norms, perceived behavior control, behavioral intention, and actual behavior. The survey-based research collected data from 120 respondents in Islamabad and Rawalpindi in December 2022. The study found a low positive association between social media and attitude change as well as the social norms of tourists. However, social media as a source of information did not directly predict the actual behavior of tourists regarding littering. Nevertheless, there was a low positive relationship between social media usage and the actual behavior of tourists in terms of littering. The study suggests that content and campaigns against littering on social media can positively influence and discourage littering habits among tourists and the public. In summary, the study highlights the potential of social media in driving positive changes in tourists' littering behavior. Keywords: Social media, tourists, behavior, social norms, correlation.

Abstract:
The detrimental impact of visitor-induced litter pollution on ecosystems, wildlife, and overall quality of life emphasizes the urgency of mitigating it. This study uniquely focuses on diverse visitors’ perceptions of littering behavior in open spaces, facilitating comprehensive assessment and targeted mitigation strategies. This study aimed to analyze attitudes, willingness to act, and responsibility perceptions, considering diverse demographics in Israel’s multicultural context. It sought insights into littering rationales, potential remedies, and the identification of relatively acceptable littering behaviors for focused attention. This profound comprehension is crucial for conserving ecologically sensitive open areas, necessitating optimized management for interface preservation. Leveraging insights from an online survey involving 401 recent open-space visitors, this research reveals a disparity between self-professed and actual littering practices. Intriguingly, 32% of participants who claimed never to litter described instances of doing so. Furthermore, disparities emerged between anti-litter attitudes, willingness to act, and individual accountability, which were influenced by demographic variables. While individuals from various demographic cohorts attested to littering behavior, young ultra-Orthodox Jews possessing solely a high school level of education exhibited a proclivity for increased littering. Perceptions predominantly attribute purposeful and recreational motives to littering, rather than substantial reasons. Participants conceive a diverse range of effective strategies to address the issue, highlighting its intricate and multifaceted nature. Consequently, this study advocates for a multifaceted approach combining enhanced enforcement, educational campaigns, informative initiatives, and infrastructural enhancements. By acknowledging the complexities of littering behavior and embracing multifarious interventions, policymakers can enhance the likelihood of successfully curbing this pervasive challenge.

Abstract:
Concerns about the environment began to rise as various issues such as littering increased. Littering is one of the problems involving the environment, and higher education campuses are also actively practising anti-littering to show their efforts. The aim of this study is to test the relationship between environmental concern, attitude and intention on anti-littering using Theory of Planned Behavior Extended Model. A total of 303 students of the Polytechnic Malaysia campus were respondents in this study and the data were analyzed by Structural Equation Modeling using SPSS Amos 24.0 Statistical Packages. Findings show that there is a direct and indirect effect between environmental concern and student’s anti-littering intention. The indirect result shows that attitude towards anti-littering behavior partially mediates the relationship between environmental concern and anti-littering intention. The implications of the research findings and suggestions for the future study are also included in the study.

Street littering has known to be a global phenomenon over the years. The intensity of littering varies across societies and age groups. This study on street littering is centered around youth. The objectives cover two aspects: exploring factors affecting street littering behavior in Sri Lanka and suggesting policy implications. The study adopted quantitative methods based on deductive reasoning approach. Data was collected as survey research using the simple random sampling technique. 315 youth were selected out of the total youth population in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2021. Analysis of data was performed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Analytical tools such as Pearson correlation, analysis of variance (ANOVA), independent sample t-test, and chi-square test were used. The study found to have a strong association between street littering behavior and two critical factors; visibility of litter and group behavior which corresponded with social psychological theories namely theory of deindividuation and theory of social comparison. A significant association with age and education was also indicated against street littering behavior while a weak relationship was noticed between environmental factors. The study suggests policymakers to focus on urgent and long-term sustainable solutions. Short term recommendations include positive and negative reinforcement strategies. The long-term sustainable solutions are proposed to make self-transformations within youth via attitudinal changes. Among the social science researchers in Sri Lanka, ‘Street littering behavior’ is considered an under-researched area. Hence this study provides both academic and empirical implications. Future research can be extended both locally and globally by comparing different demographic variables and changing the research study contexts within the same theme.

Abstract:
The existence of waste is very influential on the environment and living things. One of the most common environmental problems is the behavior of littering. The campus is one of the places where we often find the behavior of littering indiscriminately. Factors that are thought to be related to littering are nature relatedness. Nature relatedness is a person's level of attachment to his environment. The purpose of this study was to find out whether there is a relationship between a person's nature relatedness to the behavior of littering among students. This research is a correlational quantitative research with 74 respondents obtained by incidental sampling method. The results showed that there was no significant relationship between a person's nature relatedness and littering behavior (r= 0.212; p=n.s). These results can prove to us that a person's nature relatedness does not necessarily make them behave eco-friendly. This insignificant result can be a good indication of eco- friendly behavior in the campus environment.

Abstract:
AbstractLittering is a highly diffused anti-environmental and anti-social behavior, especially among young people. Furthermore, cigarette butts are one of the most littered items and are responsible for both severe environmental damages and high clean up expenses. The aim of this project is to design an interactive ashtray for the campus environment to limit the cigarette butts littering behavior in an engaging and effective way. Qualitative and quantitative data are collected. Coded observations were implemented through the research process, including the 2 pre (without the prototype) and 2 pros (with the prototype) sessions. Also, user experience test and one to one interview were conducted for deepening the understanding of the littering phenomenon and the reasons behind in the behavior among young people. The prototype indeed reduced the number of cigarette butts littering among observed behaviors of 156 students, especially in male sample. Final results indicate the behavior change of disposers is moderated by other factors, as the environmental cleanliness. Future development is also discussed.

Abstract:
This study reports attitudes, beliefs, and littering behaviors of 7532 college-aged cigarette smokers from across the United States. Four behavioral variables were measured: littering of last cigarette butt, number of butts littered in past 24 h, littering in past month, and ever having littered. Questions about beliefs centered on whether cigarette butts are biodegradable, if butts were harmful to the environment, and if butts are considered to be litter. One attitudinal question focused on whether seeing butts on the ground was bothersome. Littering was most likely among people who believed butts were biodegradable, believed they are not harmful to the environment, do not believe butts are litter, and among those with the attitude that littered butts are not bothersome. Logistic regression analyses found that the strongest influence on littering behavior was the attitude that seeing butts was bothersome. The second-strongest driver was the belief that butts are litter.

Abstract:
Using vignette experiments, this thesis examines individuals’ decision-making in various social dilemmas. A case study of littering behavior amongst university students in Lao People's Democratic Republic is used to investigate whether individual preferences are stable across littering dilemmas and other social dilemmas. This study further investigates if a visual prompt can encourage prosocial behavior in littering situations. The results show that behavior in social dilemmas is dependent on individual preferences. Additionally, the study finds little evidence that visual prompts could be used in order to efficiently decrease littering in Laos. However, a negative relationship is found between littering behavior and knowledge regarding the consequences of littering. These findings indicate that policy makers could use knowledge increasing campaigns in order to increase prosocial decision making regarding littering. Yet, further studies are needed in order to validate the results. Lastly, we also find differences in what influence littering behavior, depending on the item being littered.

Abstract:
The unprecedented scale and cumulative impact of individual behaviour on the natural environment threatens the balance of the world’s ecosystem (Milfont & Schultz, 2015; Veiga et al., 2016; Weaver, 2015). Over many centuries human practices have contributed to environmental degradation (Davis, 2011) potentially limiting future growth and wellbeing. While environmental issues and concerns have been understood since the 1970s, the destruction and overuse of environmental resources continues (Mehmetoglu, 2010). One common human behaviour that significantly contributes is littering (Chitotombe, 2014), which can be intentional or accidental, individual or a more complex multi-faceted social problem. Social marketing seeks to motivate people to change their behaviour at the downstream level and/or it seeks to alter the systems and environment surrounding an individual to effect behavioural change for the good of society (Polonsky, Francis, & Renzaho, 2015). Social marketers seek to encourage the target audience to trial a social behaviour and then sustain or maintain that behaviour (Cavill & Bauman, 2004; Evans, Blitstein, Hersey, Renaud, & Yaroch, 2008; Parkinson, Russell-Bennett, & Previte, 2012; Walls, Peeters, Loff, & Crammond, 2009).<br>Thesis (PhD Doctorate)<br>Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)<br>Griffith Business School<br>Griffith Business School<br>Full Text

Abstract:
The growing importance of people’s pro-environmental behaviours (PEBs) in relation to reducing their negative impacts and/or increasing their positive impacts in natural areas has attracted considerable research interest. Visitor engagement in pro-environmental activities is one of the key elements in maintaining and improving a national park’s ecological and biological resources. These resources are often the main components of tourism products developed in nature-based destinations. A specific concern for many national park managers is the generation of litter by visitors. A PEB to solve the problem of litter management in national parks is binning i.e. putting litter in a bin. As such, it is essential to identify what leads visitors to bin their litter. Binning is defined in this thesis as a type of private low-cost PEBs where a visitor puts his or her own litter in a bin if provided, otherwise, in a bag or a pocket for placing in a bin later. Based on this definition, this thesis is the first study to explore such behaviour in the context of a national park. Drawing on theories that include self-interest/rational (i.e. theory of planned behaviour) and other-interest/pro-social (i.e. norm-activation model) motives, an integrated structural model of binning behaviour was developed. The proposed model was tested among national park visitors in Iran and Australia. The direct and indirect associations among the proposed model constructs were examined using the partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLSSEM) approach on a sample of 240 visitors to Sorkh-e-hesar National Park in Iran and 219 visitors to Yanchep National Park in Australia. Multi-group analysis was also employed to explore the differences in binning behaviour between samples. The PLS-SEM results revealed the association between awareness of consequences and personal norms was the strongest, and personal norms was the most influential determinant of pro-environmental binning behaviour. Further, the PLS-SEM results revealed a good fit of the model within each sample, with minimal variations in the measurement parameters across cultures. However, the results of the multi-group analysis show that the relationships between the antecedents of binning behaviour did not differ significantly between the Iranian and Australian groups. This supports the cross-cultural generalisability of the measurement and structural parameters of the theory of planned behaviour and its extension by the norm activation model. From a practical perspective, the results of this doctoral research indicate that national park management agencies should strengthen the saliency of visitors’ personal norms and raise awareness of littering problems and social norms to increase visitors’ bin use while they are visiting a national park. The thesis contributes to the existing theories of PEB and to improving national park managers’ understanding of visitors’ motivations towards PEB in relation to nature-based tourism activities. The thesis concludes with a research agenda, suggesting that PEB research opportunities in the context of nature-based tourism are numerous; however, its specific domains, theoretical advancement, measurability and cultural influences require significant rethinking for future research.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to reduce littering in urban environments. This is done by using product design and sustainable development as main directions and thus being able to create a sustainable behavior change that can be used and further developed in the future. During the course of the study, it is found out how product design can contribute to reducing littering. With user-centered design and sustainable development as starting points, littering in urban environments, design for behavior change, nudging and emotional design are examined. This is in order to gain a deeper understanding of where this eind of environmental problem came from and why. Furthermore, a number of observations and interviews are performed that create a stable and clear basis for the final design's needs and requirements. These are tested and developed during the brainstorming process and concept development with the help of sketches and prototypes, which in turn leads to a final design concept. Based on all the research and method implementations, it is concluded that people repeat each other's behaviors (Håll Sverige Rent, etc.) while there is a great lack of communication and guidance to trashcan´s in urban environments. Simplicity, prompts, guidance, colors, entertainment and different concepts are the most important factors that can contribute to a positive behavior change and hopefully a solution to the environmental problem. The final design proposal was therefore developed into a design concept that represents a connection between existing trashcan´s in urban environments and individually designed accessories that can be attached to them, regardless of the shape or size. The purpose of the concept is therefore to guide and inform about the trashcan´s important function regarding the handling of all kinds of rubbish and where these are located in an urban environment.

Segge, Sebastian, and Tina Rodjeil. "En minskad plastkonsumtion? - En studie om konsumenters attityder och förväntade respons på införandet av skatten på plastbärkassar i Sverige." Thesis, Malmö universitet, Fakulteten för kultur och samhälle (KS), 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mau:diva-23386.

Full text
Abstract:
An estimated 100 billion plastic bags are introduced to the european markets every year, with a significant amount of these ending up in oceans and other bodies of water. Plastic pollution harms biodiversity as marine species consume plastic particles which are then transported through the food chain. To counteract this problem, the European Union member states strive to limit the amount of plastic carrier bags being used to 40 per person and year, by 2025. As a means to achieve this goal, the Swedish government introduced a tax which increased the retail price of plastic carrier bags by 3 SEK as of May 1st 2020. This study aims to identify consumers intended response to this tax, and what factors might prevent a possible change of behaviour. To better understand this, seven interviews were carried out with consumers from different households, in which they were asked to share their shopping routines and expected response to the tax. The results showed that while the majority of the consumers expressed a positive attitude towards the tax, few had any intention of reducing their own consumption of the plastic carrier bag, primarily due to the many irreplacable functions provided by the material.

碩士<br>逢甲大學<br>土地管理研究所<br>86<br>The littering problem existing in parks and recreation areas not only costsmanagers lots of budget and working-hour; but also results in a low levelof recreation quality in Taiwan. It is an important which and should beconcerned by both managers and visitors. Although some articles haveanalyzed the factors which affect littering behavior and have proposed somesuggestions for management, how effective these suggestion are has not been tested yet. Based on this concern, this research was focused on the issues ofvisitors'' littering behaviors and their management. Data were collected bymeans of on-site observation, visitor questionnaire survey and quasi-experimenton littering treatment. The purpose of this sudy was to develop an applicable management model for visitors'' littering behaviors. The results of this study have shown that visitors, in general, have a senseof environmental conservation. They basically support treatments for littering problem, and did not litter on purpose. Litters all over the park or recreation area were due to the inappropriate measurements or facilities to deal with the litters and, consequently, caused inconvenience, carelessness,or indifference of the visitors to treat their trash.Furthermore, visitors should be reminded to avoid littering, and the physicalmanagement treatment was called a "reminder". This research has found thatreminder could be more effective when it cooperated whith the pressure of public supervision, and the more frequent the reminder shows up, the more effective it could be.By comparing three management treatment in this research, in application,it shows that the management treatment of "a poster with slogan on the picnictable" was the most effective one on Saturday and weekdays, but "providinggarbage bags" was the most effective management treatment on Sunday. In order to maintain the cleanness of a recreation area, managers could take mixedmanagement treatment to deal with littering problem, depends on the quantityof visitors and the differences of their duration.

Abstract Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are pervasive environmental pollutants, originating from plastic fragmentation and manufacturing processes. They enter ecosystems via wastewater discharge and littering, posing risks to wildlife and human health. In agriculture, MNPs disrupt soil health and crop productivity. Understanding their behavior is crucial for mitigation. Plant responses include nutrient uptake disruption and oxidative stress. Mitigation strategies include bioaugmentation, nanomaterials, and phytoremediation. Biochar and mustard plants show promise in MNP capture. Case studies highlight successful applications in compost for agriculture, emphasizing the need for further research and standardized monitoring for sustainable practices.

We focused on the trash disposal area in our school department, which has long been in state of disarray. Our goal was to modify user behavior through design, thereby maintaining cleanliness in the environment over the long term. Following the redesign and reconstruction of this space, we conducted a two-week experiment, utilizing camera footage to observe user behavior and surveys. Upon conclusion, a total of 72 responses were collected through an online questionnaire. Participants were asked to provide feedback on their experiences and perceptions regarding the redesigned trash disposal area. Further statistical analysis, including the McNemar Test, backward elimination logic regression, and independent samples t-test, was employed to assess the effectiveness of the overall trash disposal space planning and various design elements. From the results, we found a significant improvement in satisfaction and identified a design factor, posters featuring divine patterns and slogans, which significantly influenced user behavior. This study not only observed whether design could alter behavior and optimise the environment but also incorporated some clever ideas into the design to resonate with both teachers and students. We hope that even the simple act of disposing of trash can be enjoyable and that such designs will encourage the faculty and students of the design gallery to collectively maintain a clean and comfortable learning environment.

Abstract:
Marine pollution due to littering from anthropogenic activities is a serious global environmental problem—the main reason accumulation of debris in the environment, including in the ocean. There is a significant hazard coming from plastic debris. Besides entanglement and ingestion, marine plastics debris has more complex problems and can release additional and by-product chemical substances. If we keep producing and not doing anything, a recent study said by 2050 there would be three times more plastic than fish in the ocean. We only have a limited understanding of marine plastic debris distribution, implication, fate, and behavior. Science is the key to getting the right alternative for processing debris. To prevent marine pollution successfully requires education and outreach programs, strong laws and policies, and law enforcement for government and private institutions. This chapter explores marine plastic debris.

Abstract:
It is our belief that contemporary criminology has for too long looked past particular types of crime. These types of crime, which we refer to as ‘crimes of everyday life’, fall into something of a ‘grey zone’, and include, amongst other things: ‘jumping’ red lights; speeding; littering; ‘padding’ insurance claims; and knowingly purchasing fake goods, such as watches. These are the sorts of crimes that many people do not consider to be crimes at all. We will call these ‘crimes of the middle classes’. Not all these behaviours, we ought to add, are formally illegal. They are referred to as ‘sharp’, ‘shady’, or ‘unfair’ practices, or as ‘morally dubious’ behaviours. The phrase, ‘crimes of everyday life’, is used to signify that these activities are not unusual, uncommon, or, in some other way, events of an outstanding nature. They form part of many people’s experiences and as such are often treated by them and others as ‘mundane’ and ‘just part of life’, ‘typical’, or ‘par for the course’. All are so incredibly common that we (as a society as well as criminologists) have gazed past these activities as we search for explanations of ‘real crimes’ and ‘real criminals’ like serial killers, murderous children, and drug smugglers. As well as attempting to draw attention to these sorts of crimes, we seek to account for their prevalence in society by focusing not just on individual morality but also the moral norms of certain social groups and societies. An understanding of historical change also informs our thinking on this matter. In this way we aim to fuse together individuals, social groups, societies, and macro-level social changes in an explanation of one type of ‘crimes of the everyday’: those found in the contemporary marketplace....
