Fatzinger, Amy S. ""Indians in the House": Revisiting American Indians in Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House Books." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195771.

Full text
Abstract:
Laura Ingalls Wilder's eight-novel Little House series, published between 1932 and 1943, is among the most acclaimed and controversial examples of modern children's literature. The narrative tells the true story of Wilder's pioneer childhood in the 1870s and 80s, including her family's encounters with American Indians. Recently some scholars have argued that Wilder's depiction of American Indians is derogatory, but examining Wilder's literary devices and contextualizing the story in the eras in which it occurred and was written about reveals a more complex portrayal of Native themes. Biographical information about Wilder suggests that she deliberately crafted her story as she recorded it; such changes afforded opportunities to emphasize her political values and critique mythology associated with America's frontier era. Analyzing the narrative in the context of frontier Kansas, and more specifically as women's frontier literature, reveals the literary uniqueness of the Little House story and highlights fallacies inherent in the premise of Manifest Destiny. As Wilder recorded her memories with the help of her well-known libertarian daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, during the Depression they often emphasized their anti-New Deal politics and cautioned readers about the dangers of buying into "big government" policies. The Little House story also reflects trends of the Golden Age of children's literature which demonstrated respect for children by removing didactic lessons from the literature; thus the Little House texts present the controversial subject of America's frontier history in a manner that allows children to draw their own conclusions about it. Finally, two television versions of the Little House story present didactic, positive lessons about American Indians on the frontier, but diminish the possibility for multiple interpretations of the events inherent in Wilder's original story. In a non-fiction article in The Missouri Ruralist in 1920, Wilder reminded her neighbors that home is "the best place for teaching many things, first and most important of which is how to think for one's self." Wilder's texts offer opportunities for discussing the complex topics associated with frontier history and encourage young readers to think critically about Native issues in the texts--opportunities seldom found in mainstream American storybooks and curriculum.

Abstract:
This article uses Patrick Wolfe’s theory of settler colonialism to analyze the relationship between Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie book series and Native American literature. The article traces Native American authors from the 1930s – when Little House was first published – through to the present day, and aims to show that literature is a long-standing and valid way of decolonizing a settler colonial state. Cited in the article are Ella Deloria, Louise Erdrich, Waziyatawin, and Dennis McAuliffe, Jr., among others. Further topics include a literature award that removed Wilder’s name in 2018, and the role of education and settler colonialism. In this article, the author analyzes Pellegrino Artusi’s 1891 Italian cookbook La scienza in cucina e l’arte di mangiar bene. Overall, La scienza is considered one of the most significant Italian cookbooks. The article’s four main sections – language, class and gender, religion, and geography – support the claim that Artusi created a version of Italian nationalism through food; albeit with a particular emphasis on Northern Italy. This article relies heavily on the work of Benedict Anderson and Anthony D. Smith with their contributions to the field of nationalism, as well as highlighting Jeffrey Pilcher’s work as a means of introducing nationalism through food.

Wong, Lai-yin, and 黃麗燕. "The mysterious little house: understanding and interpreting the heritage significance of woodside." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B50716396.

Full text
Abstract:
During the author’s childhood days, she passed by a colonial red brick house every time she hiked up Mount Parker in Hong Kong. She wondered why such a beautiful yet dilapidated house stood so alone. It seemed to have no connection with its surrounding area, a very local district of Quarry Bay. Later in life, when the author began to take on more interest in Hong Kong’s architectural heritage, she then realized that the red brick house, “Woodside” (「林邊屋」或「紅磚屋」), used to be the staff quarters of Butterfield & Swire, a company that contributed a great deal to the development of Quarry Bay. Coincidentally, this company became the employer of the author, and this motivated the author to seek answers to her queries about the building, and reveal the stories behind this lonely building. Studying in the Architectural Conservation Programmes has provided the opportunity to put these answers on record, so that the public may access them in the future. The research of this dissertation focuses on the history and stories of Woodside from its construction in 1922 until its handover to the government in the 1970s. Through researching and documenting facts related to Woodside, its values (aesthetic, historical, social, rarity and architectural) and significances will be identified.

Cooper, Lynda. "The Larz and Isabel Anderson House, Washington, D. C., by Little and Browne (1902-1905)." VCU Scholars Compass, 2014. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/635.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1902, Larz Anderson III, a Washington diplomat, and his wife, Isabel Weld Perkins Anderson, a Boston author, commissioned the Boston architects Arthur Little and Herbert W. C. Browne to design their winter residence in the District of Columbia. Completed in 1905, this Beaux-Arts mansion now serves as an historic house museum and as the national headquarters for the Society of the Cincinnati, a patriotic organization established by Revolutionary War officers in 1783. Larz Anderson was a member and a descendant of one of the founders of the Society. The fact that Anderson House was designated a national historic landmark in 1996 indicates that it is worthy of national recognition, yet the architectural and historical significance of this socially and politically important building has not been fully investigated. This dissertation examines the edifice by focusing on its patrons, families, architects, design, art collection, and mural paintings.

McKellar, Kyla. "Little house on Gold Mountain: A micro-analysis of racialization and colonialism in children's historical fiction." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/6413.

Full text
Abstract:
Grade three students in the Ontario education system learn about "pioneers" to satisfy the requirements of the Social Studies curriculum. Historical fiction can be used as an addition to the curriculum, and may offer children a way to learn about, and perhaps even identify with, Canada's past. The purpose of this study was to problematize two works of historical fiction that have been used in an Ontario classroom: Little house in the big woods (Wilder, 1932), and Ticket to Curlew (Lottridge, 1992). These stories present racialized, colonial depictions of European resettlers (i.e. "pioneers"), and perpetuate preferred or dominant discourses about history (Hall, 1993; Furniss, 1999). Presented as a "micro-context" (Cohen, 1992), this discussion utilizes Snead's (1994) analytical categories (i.e. marking, mythification, and omission) to understand how these works of juvenile historical fiction are racialized through the use of "colonial narratives" (Furniss, 1999). As an alternative to colonial, dominant readings of history, Paul Yee's Tales from Gold Mountain (1989) offers a collection of short stories, which focus on the possible experiences of Chinese-Canadians. While the characters in Wilder's and Lottridge's books are implicitly and explicitly marked as "white," Yee's characters are Chinese, providing readers with non-European Canadian history. Providing alternative narratives is important because, as some literature has shown, students may emotionally or physically disengage from the educational system if they feel that they are not given, nor are they encouraged to seek, negotiated or oppositional (Hall, 1993) readings of history that might reflect their identity, or life experiences (Dei, Mazzuca, Mclssac & Zine, 1998; James, 1994/1995).

Abstract:
Since the 1936 publication of Gone with the Wind and the 1939 release of David O. Selznick’s film version of the book, the city of Atlanta has been associated in the public mind with Margaret Mitchell’s tale of the Old South, the Civil War and Reconstruction. The work of Mitchell and Selznick created images that shaped the public’s understanding of southern history and of Atlanta’s identity. This dissertation examines a series of attempts to capitalize on the fame and popularity of Gone with the Wind in museums in the Atlanta area. Focusing on the interpretive efforts of three entities—the Atlanta History Center, Clayton County, and the Margaret Mitchell House, Inc.—this study reveals the problematic nature of Mitchell’s and Selznick’s work and the impact that the book and film have had on shaping Atlanta’s identity and the public memory of the South.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The relationship between man and nature has been changing over time, and is now a reflection of how architecture relates to the natural spaces around it. With this premise, a theoretical study is developed that aims to understand, at first, how Alvar Aalto, one of the architects who best works the relation between nature and architecture, develops this sensitivity with the purpose of promoting this relation in the developed project. Choosing Quinta do Esteiro Furado, a degraded farm located on Tejo’s estuary, whose environmental component is one of the elements that most characterize it, the developed work aims to recover the memory of the place and relate the extensive area where it is inserted, which involves an extensive area of cork oak trees, saline and agricultural areas, with pre-existing and proposed construction. In order to recover the farm’s memory as a place of leisure and dependence of environmental activities, a theoretical study is also carried out on a tourism aspect that promotes relations with nature - tourism of experiences. Finalizing the document, is proposed a hotel unit of tourism that offers an environmental experience at Quinta do Esteiro Furado.

Abstract:
x, 91 p. : ill., music
In this study I examine representations of antisemitism, fantasy, and cultural imperialism in the 1864 ballet The Little Humpbacked Horse, composed by Cesare Pugni and choreographed by Arthur Saint-Leon. As the creative team adapted the story from verse to ballet, they literally morphed the titular character into new fantastical forms. They also added Jewish, Muslim, and other oriental characters and ended the ballet with a parade of the Russian nations. Drawing on the works of Richard S. Wortman, Julie Kalman, and Roger Bartra, I place these transformations in the context of a larger Russian ambivalence around the shift from a rural and woodland economy to an urban one, the inclusion of Eastern provinces in the rapidly expanding nation, and the emancipation – and inclusion of – internal minorities. I then explain how the music, choreography, and focus of the ballet change as the relevance of these mid-nineteenth century concerns fades.

Senyondo, Namanda Sara. "Mitigation of Ammonia Emissions from Broiler Houses Using a Biodegradable Litter Amendment." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/50617.

Full text
Abstract:
Broilers are raised indoors on high density farms with bedding/litter to trap their manure. Ammonia gas, which is produced as the manure decomposes, has adverse effects on human health, bird welfare and the environment. Using litter amendments can reduce the amount and, consequently, the effects of ammonia emitted from broiler houses. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a biodegradable litter amendment (BLA) in reducing ammonia emitted from a broiler house.

A pilot scale test was set up with six adjacent, individually ventilated rooms and a stocking density of 0.07 m2 per bird. The birds were fed with a standard commercial, corn and soybean meal based diet and water was provided ad libitum. The first flock was grown on 10 cm of fresh, kiln-dried pine shavings, while subsequent flocks were grown on top-dressed reused litter. The two treatments (control (CTL) and BLA) were randomly assigned to the six rooms after flock 1, to give three replicates per treatment. The exhaust air from the rooms was sampled for ammonia concentration for two days each week starting at four days of age to determine the amount of ammonia emitted.

Over three subsequent flocks, the total mass of ammonia emitted from rooms treated with BLA was 31% to 47% lower than the control. Ammonia emitted per bird grown on treated litter and per kg of harvested bird weight was 32% to 44% lower, and the exhaust fans ran 7% to 22% less than CTL over the same period. For both BLA and CTL, the amount of ammonia emitted generally increased with bird age and litter reuse. The study showed that BLA effectively reduced ammonia emitted from a broiler house and that there are potential energy savings from using the amendment. However, ammonia emitted from the BLA rooms during the final flock was 57% higher than CTL, which was attributed to insufficient water (less than 18% moisture by weight) to support the reaction between BLA and ammonia.

Tildesley, Matthew Brinton. "The century guild hobby horse and Oscar Wilde : a study of British little magazines, 1884-1897." Thesis, Durham University, 2007. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/2449/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a detailed examination of subversive aesthetic and decadent British periodicals from 1884 until 1897. Viewed as cultural documents, the magazines The Century Guild Hobby Horse, The Dial, The Yellow Book and The Savoy are explored with particular reference to their positioning of the artist in relation to society. Major secondary sources are the works of Oscar Wilde and Walter Pater's The Renaissance: Studies in Art and Poetry. The Hobby Horse is viewed as being the origin of a particular discourse on the importance of the artist for society at large, and its editorial bias is examined as being a product of certain Hellenic elements in Oxford of the 1860s and 1870s. Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray features heavily in the first section. The book is initially used as a touchstone for exploring the issues of the Socratic master-pupil relationships, clandestine and subversive sexuality, the duality of subversive literary texts, and the transition from aestheticism into decadence, after which Wilde's only novel is shown to have been inspired in part by specific writings within the Hobby Horse itself. The second section examines the importance of Catholicism to a renaissance of the Hellenic within artistic communities of the 1880s and '90s, and the third and final section explores the legacy of these elements of the Hobby Horse in the later magazines The Dial, The Yellow Book and The Savoy. Specific attention is paid to the perceived relationship between Oscar Wilde and the Yellow Book in the final chapters, where the erroneous nature of the supposed links between Wilde and the Yellow Book is exposed, and Wilde's true connection with the little-known Century Guild Hobby Horse is revealed.

Schmidt, Amy Michelle. "DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF STATIC WINDROW PILES FOR IN-HOUSE BROILER LITTER COMPOSTING." MSSTATE, 2010. http://sun.library.msstate.edu/ETD-db/theses/available/etd-03312010-104403/.

Full text
Abstract:
In-house windrow composting of broiler litter has been studied to reduce microbial populations between flocks. Published time-temperature goals are used to determine the success of the composting process for microbial reductions. Spatial and temporal density of temperature measurement can influence the ability to determine what portion of a windrow pile has achieved specified time-temperature goals. Based on this motivation, an investigation of the heating profile in windrowed litter and the identification of the effects of spatial and temporal sampling densities on the prediction of the heating profile in windrowed broiler litter were executed. Likewise, an investigation of the effects of moisture content on heat generation during composting of broiler litter was conducted. Ultimately, the research projects were designed with the goal of determining the efficacy of windrow composting as a treatment method for reducing microbial populations in broiler litter and to produce recommendations for the implementation of future windrow temperature monitoring investigations. While past investigations have reported success of windrow composting for microbial population reductions, a lack of intense spatial and temporal temperature monitoring has likely mis-represented the pile heating profile and resultant effects on microbial populations.

Nalamothu, Ravi Chander. "Urban Infilling Impacts on Florida Solid Waste Facilities." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2007. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/3971.

Full text
Abstract:
Increasing urbanization in the US is leading to development or re-development of lands adjacent to solid waste facilities and these lands are being considered for residential communities and commercial projects. Thus, the potential for nuisance complaints against the pre-existing solid waste facility operations has become an increasing reality. The objective of this study was to develop a methodology to gather scientific and quantifiable data related to potential nuisances caused by landfills to determine setbacks and buffer zones near landfill and transfer station operations. Appropriate recommendations for these setbacks were made from case studies conducted at two landfills in Florida. The study involved making measurements related to odor, noise, litter and dust. Impact on housing prices was also evaluated by analyzing publicly available house price data. In this study volatile organic compound (VOC) concentration was used as a surrogate measure for gaseous impacts. The mass flux of VOCs was measured on the landfills using the dynamic flux chamber method. The ultimate purpose of flux measurements was to provide input data for dispersion modeling to analyze the extent of odor impact around the landfills, which is outside the scope of this study. Ambient measurements were also made around Landfill A for validating the dispersion model. Although there are no significant health and odor impacts caused by the landfill, higher background concentration extend 1.2-1.5 km from the landfill center on the Southeast side of the landfill. Litter from the road sides around the landfills was collected and catalogued based on size and material type. Litter count per site obtained for both landfills was less than the 2001 and 2002 state-wide counts. The difference was statistically significant. Noise measurements were made at landfills during incineration and landfilling. Based on average measurements (Leq) obtained at various distances from WTE facility and landfilling activity, and considering EPA recommended noise level of 55 dB(A) for a quiet neighborhood, a set back distance of 1.6-1.9 km was recommended. Impact on house prices near the landfills was done for four landfills in Florida. Analysis showed that three out of four landfills had significantly impacted the house price within 0.6-0.8 km from the edge of the landfill. Dust measurements were made at Landfill B using particulate samplers, quantifying the dust associated with landfilling. Measured values were below National Ambient Air quality Standard (NAAQ) for PM10. Finally, recommendations were developed to mitigate some of these nuisances

Abstract:
The commercial production of broiler chickens emits low amounts of nitrous oxide and methane, however, the production of CO2 and NH3 is considerable. Several countries have sought to investigate the emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) and ammonia (NH3) in the production of broiler chickens since the information available in the literature is variable and uncertain. This is due to the diversity and particular conditions of the facilities, as well as the innumerable differences in the production system and the complex interactions observed in animal waste. Currently, gaseous pollutant measurements are costly techniques and difficult to put into practice in a large number of operations. The impacts of agriculture on global warming must be measured to allow Brazil to meet the commitments signed in COP-21 and to manage its production more precisely. In order to obtain reliable results, it is necessary to know the emission factors for the diverse production systems in the country. In view of this complexity, this research sought to apply a simplified sampling and emission determination technique that present low cost, simplicity, and robustness. The methodology uses the principle of concentration relations as a reference and determination of the concentration of gases was performed by INNOVA 1412. Weekly monitoring of concentrations of NH3, CO2, CH4, and N2O was conducted, considering the typical management of reused litter. The air quality was evaluated for the concentrations of NH3 and CO2, as recommended by international institutions. In addition, the thermal comfort of broiler house, considering the enthalpy index proposed in the literature and zootechnical performance, were measured. In order to identify the variables that best describe the emission flux of NH3 and CO2, mixed linear models with up to six variables were tested. N, C, and P balances were conducted for each production cycle in order to account for the inputs and outputs of the elements, as well as to verify the accuracy of the methodologies used. The main input of N, C, and P in the system was from reused litter, followed by the feed. The emissions allowed for the calculation of annual losses of 16 ± 4; 61 ± 16, and 168 ± 43 g of N2O, CH4, and NH3 bird-place-1 yr-1, respectively. Considering that this research presents an applicable and innovative methodology to determine GHG flows in broiler house for the country, the data will be useful for the Brazilian annual production of GHG emissions from poultry. The results are also useful to encourage new research that promotes knowledge of GHG emissions and alternatives to decrease emissions for meat production in Brazil.

DeVault, Christopher. "Amorous Joyce: Ethical and Political Dimensions." Scholarly Repository, 2009. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_dissertations/196.

Full text
Abstract:
My dissertation challenges the longstanding dismissal of love in James Joyce's texts by examining the ethical and political implications of his love stories. Primarily using Martin Buber's works (but also including perspectives derived from bell hooks and Julia Kristeva), I define love as an affirmation of otherness and adopt a critical framework that promotes the love of others over the narcissistic devotion to oneself. In so doing, I highlight love as the ultimate challenge to authoritarian systems because the embrace of the other is necessary to transcend the boundaries that alienate individuals from each other and that justify imperialist and racist political structures. I thus offer a love ethic that not only compels meaningful individual interaction, but also establishes a model for effective social and civic participation, encouraging a climate of cooperation that embraces the solidarity and empathy needed for progressive politics. I also argue that analyzing Joyce's works provides a fruitful opportunity to recognize the individual and political viability of this love ethic. Focusing on Dubliners, Stephen Hero, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Exiles, and Ulysses, I examine the relationships between his characters' pursuits of love and their socio-political struggles, arguing that their love for others directly influences their acceptance of otherness within the colonialist discourses of Joyce's Dublin. For example, James Duffy's refusal of Emily Sinico in "A Painful Case" also rejects her advice to engage in the political cooperation that would promote his socialist ideas. Similarly, Stephen Dedalus's promotion of symbolic romance over real-world attachments focuses his aesthetics on ideal beauty instead of everyday Dublin, which alienates him from his audience and limits the practical success of his art. By contrast, Leopold Bloom's love for his wife Molly reflects a broader empathy for others that encourages social dialogue and counteracts what Joyce called "the old pap of racial hatred," an element in both British imperialism and Irish nationalism. My dissertation's afterword anticipates the amorous potential of Finnegans Wake, reading ALP's concluding soliloquy as a demonstration of her enduring affection for HCE that is reignited through each iteration of the text's cyclical narrative.

Dwelling is one of architecture's oldest questions. We know it well without realizing it. While there are new technical challenges, dwelling continues to remain a constant need over time. Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen, in her book Achtung Architektur!!, teaches a key lesson that proceeds from the following: Transformation of the image into a functioning and tactile thing emphasizes the Architectural...since works of architecture are not supposed to move. We are a conservative nation, and even more so as we reflect our values onto the facades of our houses. Mobility and Architecture with a capital A have rarely gone together in history. One desires stability in one's house. HOUSE I lite proposes to design a product you can order, build, and then rebuild, as you like: a variety of living choices that arise from a small array of generic parts. Panels plug into matrices. Systems weave smartly into a compact and evolving footprint. There are never two HOUSE I lite dwellings exactly alike. And if they are ever the same, they too will change.

Ash, Hayley. "Assessing the welfare of laboratory-housed marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) : effects of breeding and infant rearing background." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/21794.

Full text
Abstract:
The common marmoset is the most frequently used New World primate in laboratory research and testing. In the UK, their use is strictly controlled by the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act, which is underpinned by the principles of humane science: Replacement, Reduction and Refinement. Despite their use, there are a number of problems associated with the breeding of marmosets, including low dam longevity and increasing litter sizes. Large litters have led to high infant mortality and the need for human intervention to improve infant survival, which involves removal from the family for substantial periods of time. Previous research in a range of primate species shows that early life family separation is associated with numerous adverse behavioural and physiological effects. This project therefore sought to systematically investigate the effects of breeding and infant rearing practices, integrating a number of measures to assess the welfare of laboratory- housed marmosets. Potential predictors of dam longevity and litter size were first identified in three captive UK colonies, over four decades. Dam longevity was found to be approximately 6 years, with heavier dams living longer, but overall there was no consistent improvement in longevity over the decades. As longevity varied widely between colonies and over time, environment may be one of the most important factors. Approximately half of all births at each colony were litters larger than two, and these larger litters had greater infant mortality. Only dam weight at conception was useful in predicting litter size, with heavier dams producing larger litters. The consequences of large litters and early separation from the family for supplementary feeding were then investigated. Although twins had lower body weight than 2stays (two infants remaining with the family after death of the other littermate/s) and supplementary fed triplets, they also had the fewest health problems. There was also some evidence that animals from larger litters were more at risk of suffering from extreme low weight. Some minor differences were found in behavioural development between litter sizes. Singleton infants received more rejective rearing, while 2stays received more protective rearing, perhaps following the loss of an infant. While twin infants gained independence earlier than singletons or 2stays, they did not appear to cope better with stress in adulthood, displaying more significant increases in stress-related behaviour following the routine stressor of capture and weighing, compared to 2stays and supplementary fed triplets. While overall cortisol unexpectedly decreased from baseline to post capture, there were only significant fluctuations in 2stay marmosets. Instead, there were some increases in positive behaviour in supplementary fed triplets following the stressor, suggesting enhanced coping ability. However, in another group of supplementary fed triplets, there were subtle increases in depressive-like symptoms, measured using cognitive bias and preference tests, suggesting a reduced expectation of and interest in rewards. There were however no differences between family-reared and supplementary fed marmosets in time to learn a visual discrimination task, or in responses to temperament tests. Therefore, while it was hypothesised that early family separation would have adverse developmental consequences, there were actually very little differences between marmosets of different litter sizes and rearing backgrounds, across the range of measures. Results suggest that the current supplementary feeding programme, along with a regular human socialisation programme, minimises any potential negative effects. However, we should always be finding ways to improve the lives of animals in our care. Possible Refinements include reducing dam weight to increase twin births and improve infant survival, and training to allow supplementary feeding on the carrier’s back, to prevent infant separation and reduce disruption to the family. These Refinements could reduce fear and allow monkeys to become more resilient to the laboratory environment.

Abstract:
Dedicated to recording, portraying, and indicting the social inequities that he witnessed in nineteenth century Victorian England, one of Charles Dickens' many concerns was the roles assigned to women both in the public and private spheres. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the narratives of Amy Dorrit and Miss Wade in Dickens' Little Dorrit and Esther Summerson in Bleak House to explore the ways in which each woman conforms to, subverts, or rejects her socially prescribed roles as she seeks to create her own identity while simultaneously complying to the duties and roles assigned her. This study focuses on the oral and written narratives of these women exploring their words, stories, and symbolic imagery. It also contextualizes their narratives while answering the critical question: How does individual identity emerge amid rigorously circumscribed social roles?

There are lots of new brands which provide similar products in the food market which makes the Taiwanese food market get more competitive. Some food companies, especially for those brands with a long history, not only need to react to those external environment changes and the changes of consumer''s taste to avoid the brand entering Brand graveyard, but also achieve the goal of brand revitalization. This study tries to use the case of a leading brand with a long history in the Taiwanese food industry, Uni- Noodles, to find the secret of brand revitalization. This study analysis the case study based on literature review, which not only arranges the symptom of outdated brands and the terms, timing, problem finding, and the solution of brand revitalization, but also provides a model of brand revitalization which combine the case study to make their study more practical. In this study, the model of brand revitalization is based on Brand Identity System form Daivd Aaker including value proposition, position, and communication ways of the brand. Delivering emotional benefit, understanding the target audience, and back to the core of the brand are important, especially for the leading brand in the market with a long history. If this kind of brands would like to have another peak in the future, they have to answer the question: how to follow the change of the environment and the customer and build the strategy with differentiation advantage at the same time?

In response to the development of sharing economy, many countries, such as the United States, France, Korea, and Hong Kong, have been pushing forward sharing-based urban policies since 2008. In recent years, Taiwan has also advocated the concept of “Space Share, Taipei.” Many sharing projects in the private sector are prospering. However, most researches on sharing topics are focused on the business opportunities; whereas studies based on humanistic meanings are relatively rare. To understand the relationship amongst human and non-human in Sharing community, this study focuses on Gufeng Little White House community in Taipei City; researcher collects data via participatory observations and interviews, whilst using Actor-Network Theory (ANT) to analyze the human and non-human relationship network. This study concludes that sharing-based communities share the following qualities: 1. The cycle of sharing and giving gifts accumulate trust, enabling Sharing community to develop sustainably. 2. Distributed power is helpful to sustainable management. 3. In the Actor-Network Theory, the translation between human and non-human occurs frequently, not only is the power distributed, but the obligatory passage points are also very wide apart. 4. Sharing Communities managed by the private sector are of great meaning, the government should have comprehensive measures to enable bottom-up developments.

The first chapter examines Dickens’s own education as well as his education-related charitable activities to provide context for the following analysis of "Bleak House" and "Little Dorrit." The second chapter focuses on education in "Bleak House" as a locus both for Dickens’s critique of the government’s irresponsible failure to educate the poor and for Dickens’s depiction of social responsibility motivating individuals to teach others. Finally, the third chapter considers the role of education in "Little Dorrit" by studying Amy Dorrit as an exemplar and teacher of social responsibility who stands in contrast to the prevailing irresponsibility that characterizes her family and “Society.”

Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in 1867 in north-central Wisconsin, United States. Starting in 1932, Wilder began to write down her pioneering childhood experience and later published the Little House Books, a series of nine novels in total. This study first discusses the importance of the westward movement in American history and shows the American spirit is represented in American Frontier/Pioneer Literature. Second, the study delves into the author’s writing motivation, including the creation of the Little House Books, and analyzes the protagonist’s character to pave way for later discussion. Third, the study examines the influences of family and peers for female growth, particularly the growth of the protagonist,, including problems and attitudes which women then needed to deal with and women nowadays can learn from. The study also compares and contrasts generational differences as well as familial legacies of female characters’ values and gender-role performances. Finally, the study explores the significant differences between male-authored and female-authored Frontier/Pioneer Literature; meanwhile, the study illumines the values and limits of the child-centered writing perspective of the Little House Books. This study concludes by evaluating the pioneering spirits of women and values of traditional motherhood.

By employing the microfilm promotional film “House of Little Moments” produced by Uni-Noodle, this thesis Uni-Noodle examines how to revitalize an ageing brand in a marketing campaign. Uni-president has enjoyed being part of nostalgic memories of Taiwan, but losing young consumers seeing it as old and unhealthy. Given this divide, the brand campaign has maneuvered to eliminate these stigmas by trying to convert the sense of nostalgic memories to a sense of humanity existing among younger generation with respect to their interpersonal relationships. Uni-present has long been aware of the ageing brand image and implemented a number of product innovation projects and advertising campaigns. The main purpose of doing this is to rescue the ageing brand images – being old, cheap, not trendy and unhealthy. This case study is comprised of three stages: In the first stage, the study examines the three semiotic levels – strategic, semantic and technical to see how the microfilm’s texts. In the second stage, this study employs semiotic analysis with special attention on narrator, scenery space and product placement; in the third stage, in-depth interviews were conducted to understand how the consumers perceived the microfilm advertisements. The result suggests that Uni-president noodle has employed four strategies, first - detective film format is implemented to communicate with younger sensation seeking audiences; second, affect as a form of flavor; third, natural, a slice of lifestyle rather than too dramatic as symbolically Japanese, and fourth, new recipes are connected with the new generations. From the perspectives of consumers, the reposition of nostalgic feeling toward young generation is the key; second, noodle shop and the sense of humanity; third, younger consumers are presented; fourth, the apprenticeship among Japanese culture; fifth, the viral marketing effect for housekeepers who are not skilled in the cooking value the generic qualities of instant noodle.

Full text
Abstract:
In the final quarter of the 18th century, a planter's dwelling overlooking the Caribbean Sea at Little Bay on the northwest coast of Montserrat in the British Leeward Islands was destroyed by fire and never reoccupied. Archaeological excavations in 2010 and 2011 yielded fragments of personal adornment, dress, household furnishings, and the house containing them providing an intimate portrait of an anonymous white male and his domestic arrangements. We do not know much about the planter class, though its members were central to the structure of 18th-century West Indian society. I use this rich archaeological data alongside archival, pictorial, and comparative analyses to particularize a West Indian planter and investigate the construction of colonial Creole identity. Evidence from archaeological, architectural, and ethnographic sources allow a reconstruction of the plantation house as a single-pile, three-cell plan, wood-frame structure with a raised masonry foundation and front gallery. This form, adapted to the Caribbean environment, altered English understanding and use of private and public spaces. Through archival research, I linked Little Bay to the Piper family, documenting its transfer through generations of unmarried male relatives. At the time of the fire the inhabitant was a Montserratian born, third-generation white male of English descent, meaning a white Creole. Ceramic gaming disks and glass beads identical to examples found in enslaved contexts indicate a household comprised of domestic slaves and planter. The head of household was a wealthy male versed in 18th-century British aesthetics as shown by a fob seal, coat buttons, and flintlock pistol. Punch bowls, glassware, tea and tableware reflect refined British cultural sensibilities, but as first-person travelogues recount, such goods were redeployed in distinctive colonial form with Creole open-door sociability and shared domesticity with household enslaved. Taken together, the finds demonstrate how this colonial Creole used English material goods to craft a distinctive form of white masculine identity within the West Indian planter class. In this world of mixed classes, races, and heritages, such formulations required choices. My research highlights how British objects and local practice combined to create new meanings for plantation society in Montserrat and the West Indies.

Abstract:
“Prestige and Prurience: The Decline of the American Art House and the Emergence of Sexploitation, 1957-1972” presents a historical narrative of the art house theatre during the 1960s and its surrounding years, examining the ways in which art theatres transformed into adult theatres during the 1960s and 1970s. Beginning in earnest in the immediate post-war period, art houses in America experienced a short period of growth before stagnating in the middle 1950s. With the release in 1957 of the erotically charged Brigitte Bardot film …And God Created Woman, a new era of art houses followed, one that is characterized by the emergence of sexualized advertising, content and stars. As the 1960s came, sex films like The Immoral Mr. Teas played on art film marketing strategies and even screened in many art houses. Gradually, sexploitation films began to dominate art house programs and replace European art films and Hollywood revivals. In this transitional period, however, sexploitation films used key strategies to emulate many art film characteristics, and likewise art films used sexploitation techniques in order to maintain marketability for American distribution and exhibition. By studying the promotion and programming used by art house theatres during this period, this thesis identifies and announces a number of key trends within the dynamic period for art houses. The period is distinguished by its convergence of practices related to prestigious and prurient signs, merging art and sex in ways unique to the era and to the circumstances by which sex films infiltrated art houses and art films pandered to salacious interests. It presents a new perspective on the history of art houses, art cinema, American exhibition, sexploitation films, hardcore pornography and censorship.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to provide an insight into English country house fiction by twentieth and twenty-first century authors, such as E.M. Forster, Evelyn Waugh, Iris Murdoch, Alan Hollinghurst, and Sarah Waters. The variety of literary depictions of the country house reflects the physical diversification of the buildings in question, from smaller variants to formerly grand residences on the brink of physical collapse. The country house is explored within the wider social and cultural contexts of the period, including contemporary architectural development. Given the exceptionally evocative and integrating properties that the influential theories of Martin Heidegger and Gaston Bachelard attribute to a house in general, it is unsurprising that the concept of the country house has inspired discussion of such a wide spectrum of topics. Its unique centring quality is echoed in the dense intertextuality prominently marking its literary representations, and enables the successful implementation of various temporal idiosyncrasies, which often set the house apart from the habitual passing of time. Within the scope of contemporary fiction, architecture and poetics of space, the country house accentuates different conceptions of dwelling. Consequently, the literary portrayals of the country house can be...

Winkler, Scott. "Evaluation of In-House Windrow Composting as a Poultry Litter Treatment Prior to Land Application." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/151332.

Full text
Abstract:
The land application of poultry litter as a fertilizer is a common practice due to the low cost and high availability of poultry litter in some regions. However, land application can create concerns related to runoff water quality and odor. An experiment was conducted to determine the effectiveness of in-house windrow composting (IWC) of poultry litter prior to land application in terms of bacteria, odors and nutrients compared to untreated (fresh) litter. In the second part of the research, the objective was to quantify the number and distribution within poultry houses of selected water quality indicator bacteria in litter. Comparison of fresh and IWC litter showed that Escherichia coli (E. coli) was present in very low concentrations on day 1 in fresh litter (20 cfu/g) and IWC litter (55 cfu/g), but the levels were undetectable in both litter types on day 9 in Trial 1. In Trial 2, E. coli levels were undetectable in IWC litter before and after the IWC process. Similarly, fresh litter had undetectable E. coli levels on day 1, but 185 cfu/g on day 10. Additionally, nutrient analysis and moisture content results showed no significant differences between fresh and IWC litter. To evaluate odor differences between fresh and IWC litter, volatile gases were collected onto sorbent tubes and into Tedlar bags from wind tunnel flux chambers placed directly on litter piles prior to land application. The concentrations of 13 compounds commonly associated with animal manure were then determined by GC/MS. Analysis of volatile gas samples resulted in significant changes of various individual odorants, while olfactometry analysis of Tedlar bag air samples resulted in reduced detection threshold values for IWC litter compared to the fresh litter. These results indicate the possible mitigating effects IWC may have on odors associated with litter. In the survey of bacterial distribution within poultry houses, litter counts varied greatly within house sections and between farms. Regression analysis revealed that bacterial counts and litter moisture content are significantly related, thus explaining much of the variation in litter bacterial counts within a house. These results indicate that IWC could be a useful best management practice to reduce E. coli levels and odor associated with poultry litter prior to land application, but factors such as moisture content, initial bacteria concentrations, and windrow size all affect the level of bacteria and odor reduction.

Several methods have shown varying effectiveness in reducing pathogens on the farm, one of which is in-house windrow composting. In-house windrowing of broiler litter between flocks has been suggested as an effective method to reduce pathogens and improve the quality of the house environment in which new chicks are placed. This technique uses heat released by microorganisms during the degradation of organic material to kill pathogenic bacteria. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of in-house windrow composting process on the pathogenic microbes levels of broiler litter. The broiler litter from previous flock was used as composting materials. Three trials were carried out: Trial 1 was divided into a control and six treatment groups. The broiler litter was paved on the floor with 5 cm of thickness, without adding water and turning as a control. The treatment groups was a 3 × 2 factorial design with three level of moisture content (35 ± 2%, 40 ± 2% and 45 ± 2%) and two difference depth (55, 75 cm) of compost pile. All experiment groups were windrow composted in-house for 11 days, and were turned on the 4th and 8th day. Trial 2 treatment groups was a 2 × 2 factorial design with two kinds of moisture content (30 ± 2%, 37 ± 2%) and difference depth (40, 55 cm) of compost piles. All experiment groups were windrow composted in-house for 12 days, and were turned on the 5th and 8th day. Trial 3 treatment groups was a 2 × 2 factorial design with two kinds of moisture content (32 ± 2%, 42 ± 2%) and two turning frequency (twice, three times) of compost piles. All the experiment groups were windrow composted in-house for 9 days at a depth of 55 cm. The results showed that the core and surface temperature of the composting pile were above the sterilize temperature (55℃) for over three days for all of the treatment groups. The population of total viable aerobic count, coliforms, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, Campylobacter jejuni and Clostridium in the broiler litter significantly declined during the composting processes (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the basic requirement for sterilization of broiler litter (> 55℃ for 3 days) can be reached by in-house windrow composting. The population of the pathogenic microbes in the broiler litter significantly declined during after the composting process. The broiler litter after the in-house windrow composting process can be reused to reduce the consumption of fresh bedding material and reduced the yield of litter manure in broiler farm, and ameliorate the pollution of broiler litter.

Kinoshita, Jun R. "Little houses on the prairie : a predictive model of French-Canadian settlement in Oregon's Willamette Valley." Thesis, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1957/28360.

Full text
Abstract:
Using GIS, this study creates a predictive model of a distinct population of French-Canadian settlers, highlighting shared environmental characteristics of known sites that may have factored into their decision-making process as they chose locations for their farmsteads. While traditional historic and archaeological research has been conducted on French Prairie, the advent of GIS and readily available data sets facilitated this first multivariate, statistical, predictive model of French-Canadian settlement. This study explored theoretical and logistical issues of predictive modeling and determined that this population may be uniquely suited to predictive modeling. Here, however, substantiating a previous settlement pattern was problematic and the variables used produced a weak predictive model. One by-product of this research was the digitalization, rectification and analysis of 1852 GLO maps of the French Prairie during the development of the "known sites" data theme. As an initial attempt at modeling, this study points to the need for ongoing archeological testing and modeling efforts as development on and around French Prairie threatens archaeological resources. The study suggests other environmental and social variables for further testing.

The first experiment was conducted to determine the optimum effective level of the litter application of sodium bisulfate. Atmospheric ammonia at 4 weeks and litter moisture at 3 weeks treated-pens were significantly lower in sodium bisulfate (488 g/m²) than in the untreated control pens. However, broiler performance was not significantly affected with any treatment. Litter application of sodium bisulfate at 244 g/m² and 488 g/m² were comparable and better than the 122 g/m² and untreated control. In Experiments 2 and 3 comparisons of litter chemical treatments of liquid Micro Aid® (8.75 ml/L H₂O) applied at 0, 2, 4,and 6 weeks; granular Micro Aid® (0.5 mg/g of feed) fed continuously throughout the experiment, and litter application of ferrous sulfate (732 g/m²); clinoptilolite (2443 g/m²), sodium bisulfate (244 g/m²) and ferrous sulfate (732 g/m²) were made for 7 week periods. Ferrous sulfate-treated pens (732 g/m²) had significantly lower litter pH at 2, 4 and 6 weeks than untreated control and significantly lower atmospheric ammonia levels at 3 and 6 weeks than the clinoptilolite (2443 g/m²), sodium bisulfate (244 g/m²) and untreated control in the other experiment. In the fourth experiment, sodium bisulfate was applied twice (244 g/m²/application) at 0 and 4 weeks, sodium bisulfate applied once (488 g/m²) and ferrous sulfate applied once (732 g/m²) prior to the experiment. At 4 weeks mean body weights and feed conversion were significantly better with one sodium bisulfate application than the untreated control. At 7 weeks feed conversion (P<0.08) and male body weights (P<0.1) were slightly better in one sodium bisulfate application than in the untreated control while mortality was significantly lower in the untreated control pens. Most mortality occurred after 4 weeks and were due primarily to Sudden Death Syndrome. Atmospheric ammonia levels at 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4, weeks and litter pH levels at 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks were significantly lower in pens with one application of sodium bisulfate than in pens untreated. Litter application of sodium bisulfate once (488 g/m²) seemed to be the best litter treatment in reducing atmospheric ammonia.

Abstract:
Louise Erdrich’s North Dakota series explores the historical and contemporary hardships faced by aboriginals. Her novels center on the families that live on the fictional reservation of Little No Horse and the communal and personal fragmentation that occurs as a result of colonization. Focusing on three of the novels in Erdrich’s North Dakota works, I identify the different ways in which Erdrich’s characters respond to the imposition of Western values. To frame my thesis, I focus on Dee Horne’s examination of subversive and colonial mimics. By examining the various responses to the colonization of the reservation, Erdrich’s novels reveal the possibilities of reconstructing Native communities. I identify the ways in which Erdrich exposes the similarities that exist between traditional Native spirituality and Catholicism which in turn suggests the ways in which a harmonious balance can be achieved between these two cultures.
