Abstract:
Brian Kaywas a renowned entomologist and arbovirologistwhoworked in academia and with local and international governments to make major and lasting improvements in public health. Particular highlights were the first ever elimination of a saltmarsh mosquito in the world and elimination of dengue from many hamlets and villages in Vietnam. He is also remembered for the development of the careers of many young researchers in Australia and overseas. When thinking of Brian Kay, three things come to mind immediately. First, Brian was a great character–a man of fun and passion and always good to be around. He had a great cheeky smile. Second, Brian was deeply committed to the careers and well-being of those around him–exemplified no better than how he acted so caringly for the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) staff when he served for several years as Chairman of the QIMR Staff Association; and third, Brian was an outstanding entomologist, biologist, scientist. Here, we give a little history of his background and attempt to distil a few of Brian's many scientific achievements and paint a picture of a man who was greatly admired and loved by those who worked alongside him in various parts of the world, but predominantly in Australia and the Asia Pacific Region.

Abstract:
Film historians have generally concentrated their research of British non-fiction film-making on the male directors and producers of the British documentary movement. This has resulted in the marginalisation of those operating in other non-fiction genres, in particular the many women documentarists who worked on educational, instructional, travel, commercial, government and industrial films from the 1930s to the 1970s. This article examines the histories of three women documentary film-makers to assess why women are frequently missing from the established accounts of the genre and argue for their inclusion. It provides an overview of women in British documentary histories, followed by case studies of three women who worked in the sector: Mary Field, Margaret Thomson and Kay Mander. It investigates their collegial networks and considers the impact of gender discrimination on their careers in order to understand why they have received so little recognition in histories of the British documentary film movement.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to answer two main research questions. First, the authors ask the degree to which the UK corporate governance code has changed in response to both systemic perturbations and the subsequent enquiries established to recommend solutions to perceived shortcomings. Second, the authors ask how the solutions proposed in these landmark governance texts might be explained.Design/methodology/approachThe authors take a critical discourse approach to develop and apply a discourse model of corporate governance reform. The authors draw together data on popular, corporate-political and technocratic discourses on corporate governance in the UK and analyse these data using content analysis and the historical discourse approach.FindingsThe UK corporate governance code has changed little despite periodic crises and the enquiries set up to investigate and make recommendation. Institutional stasis, the authors find, is the product of discourse capture and control by elite corporate actors aided by political allies who inhabit the same elite habitus. Review group members draw intertextually on prior technocratic discourse to create new canonical texts that bear the hallmarks of their predecessors. Light touch regulation by corporate insiders thus remains the UK approach.Originality/valueThis is one of the first applications of critical discourse analysis in the accounting literature and the first to have conducted a discursive analysis of corporate governance reports in the UK. The authors present an original model of discourse transitions to explain how systemic challenges are dissipated.

Abstract:
Agricultural shows are important events in rural and regional Australia. For over a century, they have often been the main annual festival on any given town's calendar. This importance makes the lack of scholarly attention to rural and regional shows puzzling. Recently, Australian exhibitions and agricultural shows have come in for some very welcome scholarly attention, although very little has been written about rural and regional events. Scholars such as Kate Darian-Smith and Sara Wills, Joanne Scott and Ross Laurie, Judith McKay, and Kay Anderson have all written on exhibitions and shows – although, of this group, only Darian-Smith and Wills have written on rural shows, the rest focusing more on inter-colonial and metropolitan Australian shows. Even Richard Waterhouse's groundbreaking study of rural Australian cultural history, The Vision Splendid, provides little detail on agricultural shows and their role in rural cultural life, although the show's importance is recognised.

Full text
Abstract:
We investigated whether the learning of colour terms in childhood is constrained by a developmental order of acquisition as predicted by Berlin and Kay [1969 Basic Color Terms (Berkeley, CA: University of California Press)]. Forty-three children, aged between 2 and 5 years and grouped according to language ability, were given two tasks testing colour conceptualisation. Colour comprehension was assessed in a spoken-word-to-colour-matching task in which a target colour was presented in conjunction with two distractor colours. Colour naming was measured in an explicit naming task in which colours were presented individually for oral naming. Results showed that children's knowledge of basic-colour terms varied across tasks and language age, providing little support for a systematic developmental order. In addition, we found only limited support for an advantage for the conceptualisation of primary (red, green, blue, yellow, black, white) compared to non-primary colour terms across tasks and language age. Instead, our data suggest that children acquire reliable knowledge of nine basic colours within a 3-month period (35.6 to 39.5 months) after which there is a considerable lag of up to 9 months before accurate knowledge of the final two colours (brown and grey) is acquired. We propose that children acquire colour term knowledge in two distinct time frames that reflect the establishment of, first, the exterior (yellow, blue, black, green, white, pink, orange, red, and purple) and, second, the interior structure (brown and grey) of conceptual colour space. These results fail to provide significant support for the order predicted by Berlin and Kay, and suggest, instead, that the development of colour term knowledge is largely unconstrained.

Abstract:
Long-term complications in levodopa treated Parkinson's disease (PD) patients caused a resurgence of interest in pallidotomy as an option of treatment. However, postoperative complications such as speech disorders can occur. PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the acoustic voice in PD patients, before and after posteroventral pallidotomy. METHOD: Twelve patients with PD were submitted to neurological and voice assessments during the off and on phases, in the pre-operative, 1st and 3rd post-operative months. The patients were evaluated with the UPDRS and the vocal acoustic parameters - f0, NHR, jitter, PPQ, Shimmer, APQ (using the software MultiSpeech - Kay Elemetrics - 3700). RESULTS: The off phase UPDRS scores revealed a tendency to improvement at the 1st month and the off phase worsened. The shimmer and APQ improved. CONCLUSION: This study shows that pallidotomy has little improvement on functional use of communication of PD patients.

Abstract:
At the time, 1929, 1939, 1945 and 1968 all seemed important turning points in the track of our civilisation. By contrast, as anyone alive at the time will attest, 1955 seemed like an unexceptional year in the United States at least. Right in the middle of the ‘middle-of-the-road’ years of the Eisenhower presidency, 1955 hardly seemed like the year for a major aesthetic revolution. Yet it was in the brief span between 1954 and 1956 that the rock aesthetic displaced the jazz-based aesthetic in American popular music. Frank Sinatra, Tommy Dorsey, Patty Page, Perry Como, Nat King Cole, Tony Bennett, Kay Starr, Les Paul, Eddie Fisher, Jo Stafford, Frankie Lane, Johnnie Ray and Doris Day gave way on the popular music charts to Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, The Platters, Bill Haley, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Carl Perkins and the growing legion of rockers.

Abstract:
Existing work in the field of business ethics has explored how concepts in philosophy and other disciplines can be applied to blame at work, and considers blame’s potential impact on organisations and their employees. However, there is little empirical evidence of organisational blaming practices and their effects. This article presents an analysis of interviews with twenty-seven employees from a range of occupations, exploring their experience of blame, its rationale and impact. A diversity of blaming practices and perspectives is revealed, and in making sense of these the authors draw on recent theoretical developments—Skarlicki, Kay, Aquino, and Fushtey’s (2017) concept of ‘swift-blame,’ and Fricker’s (2016) notion of ‘communicative blame.’ The study also reveals a tension between a desire to avoid ‘blaming’ on the one hand, and a need for ‘accountability,’ on the other, and the authors explore the implications of the findings for organisations in seeking to ‘manage’ blame.

Abstract:
IntroductionAn increasing number of studies is focusing on general deficits in patients with schizophrenia in identifying, differentiating and recalling facial emotions which significantly impairs the patient's psychosocial functioning and quality of life.ObjectivesThese impairments seem not to be affected by conventional treatment. According to preliminary results antipsychotics alone show only little effects on social cognition.AimsThe present study investigated the efficacy of a computer based training focussing on facial affect recognition (Training of Affect recognition TAR, Wölwer et al. 2005) for the remediation of social cognitive dysfunctions.MethodsEffects on social cognition were tested with the Vienna Emotion Recognition Task (VERT-K, Pawelak 2004). Neurocognitive performance was assessed by the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST Heaton et al. 1993). Additional assessments were tests of alertness, vigilance and working memory (TAP Zimmermann and Fimm 2002), positive and negative symptoms (PANSS Kay et al. 1987), Beck Depression Scale (BDI Beck 1964) and Quality of Life (WHOQOL-Bref WHOQOL Group 1998).ResultsIn comparison to the TAU group, the TAR group achieved significant improvements in affect recognition in general as well as in recognizing sad faces (p < 0.01) (Fig.2). In addition, we found significant improvements for the TAR group in regard to vigilance and Quality of Life (p < 0.05).ConclusionsTreatment with new antipsychotics alone leads only to limited effects on social cognition and functioning. A specific combined treatment of new antipsychotics and TAR leads to improved cognition and emotional performance with additional positive effects on functional outcome.

Abstract:
This article examines the role women played, as film-makers and participants, in the development of the documentary genre from 1930 into the wartime period. In the 1930s and 1940s, the topics of slum clearance and town planning were a preoccupation of British documentary and non-fiction cinema. This article therefore first focuses on the little-known propaganda films generated by housing charities in the 1930s. After an examination of the use of films in the campaigns for better housing between the wars, it concentrates on three films which are linked by the inclusion of filmed interviews with the poorly housed. The study starts with a re-evaluation of Housing Problems (1935) and Kensal House (1937), widely regarded as the first of the genre, placing them in the context of the housing movement. It then gives an overview of the housing issue and female documentary-making during the Second World War, as background to a case study of film-maker Kay Mander, concentrating on her end-of-war manifesto Homes for the People (1945), which saw a further development of the interview technique and presented the women's perspective in a feminist manner. This article shows that women were not only instrumental in the development of the housing documentary but that the films they made promoted a female-orientated and progressive view of housing provision and town planning for working-class people. It was a passion for social change and a growing belief in the democratisation of the image of the poorly housed that determined changes in treatment in the films of the documentary film movement.

Abstract:
Kay, Alan R., Mutsuyuki Sugimori, and Rodolfo Llinás. Kinetic and stochastic properties of a persistent sodium current in mature guinea pig cerebellar Purkinje cells. J. Neurophysiol. 80: 1167–1179, 1998. Whole cell voltage-clamp techniques were employed to characterize the sodium (Na) conductances in acutely dissociated, mature guinea-pig cerebellar Purkinje cells. Three phenomenological components were noted: two inactivating and a persistent component ( I P Na). All exhibited similar sensitivities to tetrodotoxin (TTX; IC50 ∼3 nM). The inactivating Na current demonstrates two components with different rates of inactivation. The persistent component activates at a more negative membrane potential than the inactivating components and shows little inactivation during a 5-s pulse. The amplitude of the persistent Na conductance had a higher Q 10 than the inactivating Na conductance (2.7 vs. 1.3). I P Na rapidly activates (∼1 ms) and deactivates (<0.2 ms) and like the fast component appears to be exclusively Na permeable. I P Na is not a “window” current because its range of activation exceeds the small overlap between the steady-state activation and inactivation characteristics of the inactivating current. Anomalous tail currents were observed during voltage pulses above –40 mV after a prepulse above –30 mV. The tails rose to a maximum inward current with a time constant of 1.5 ms and decayed to a persistent inward current with a time constant of 20 ms. The tails probably arose as a result of recovery from inactivation through the open state. The noise characteristics of I P Na were anomalous in that the measured variance was lower at threshold voltages than would be predicted by a binomial model. The form of the variance could be partially accounted for by postulating that the maximum probability of activation of the persistent current was less than unity. The noise characteristics of I P Na are such as to minimize noise near spike activation threshold and sharpen the threshold.

Abstract:
Darbas skirtas judesio krypties suvokimo tyrimams. INFLUENCE OF RELATIVE LUMINANCE AND ANGLE BETWEEN MOVEMENT DIRECTIONS OF TWO MOVING STIMULI ON DIRECTION DETECTING Romualdas Šatinskas, Dalia Stabinytė, Aleksandras Pleskačiauskas, Henrikas Vaitkevičius Summary The goal of the present research was to investigate the perception of movement direction. The main purpose was to detect if the mix of directions was present and ascertain the mechanism of this process. We carried out 35 psychophysical experiments with 6 observers. Two bright stimuli moved on a screen with different angle between movement directions or with different brightness of the stimuli. The results showed that perceived direction of movement was attracted to the second stimulus trajectory if the angle between trajectories was less than 90 degrees. And this phenomenon was the stronger the brighter the second stimulus was. When the angle was more than 90 degrees the effect of pushing was observed. While the distance between stimuli is comparatively little the attraction prevails as it is caused by the summation and averaging of signals within a single receptive field of a neuron. When the distance between stimuli grows the effect of pushing is observed because of the lateral inhibition amongst the different channels of movement analysis. These results show that a process of mix of directions is present in perception of movement direction and are strong factors in proving the vectorial model of movement perception.

Abstract:
Informal investment represents one of the main sources to finance early-stage new ventures. Despite the progressive participation of women in informal investment, little is known about the characteristics of female informal investors, especially in developing countries. This study examines the gender differences of a sample of 613 informal investors in Chile. To this end we used the database from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Chile 2007–2008 and applied tests of differences in proportions and means for independent samples. The results show that there are significant gender differences in some socio-demographic variables, like education and work status, and also in the perception of good opportunities and the fear to failure. Additionally, women invest smaller amounts and expect lower returns than men do. Finally, women invest more than men in close family. Policy implications of these results are discussed.

Abstract It has always been assumed that the name Bauhaus was invented in 1919 by Walter Gropius, the institution’s founder and first director. However, the name had been in use since 1915 by the conservative Berlin architect Albert Gessner for his practice. Gessner had become famous for large, ingeniously designed apartment house complexes. Gropius and Gessner knew each other from the German Werkbund and Gropius probably saw the name in this context and adopted it. Gessner’s private practice had little success at the time, he closed his Bauhaus in 1920 and the competing use of the name in Weimar probably did little damage. But Gessner was fiercely opposed to the modern movement in architecture and enthusiastically joined the Nazi party in 1932, which ultimately determined its demise.

Abstract:
After decades of human-deterministic explanations for the collapse of the ancient Rapanui culture that inhabited Easter Island (Rapa Nui) before European contact (1722 CE), paleoecological studies developed over the last decade have provided sound evidence of climate changes and their potential socioecological impacts. Especially significant is the occurrence of a century-scale drought (1570–1720 CE) during the Little Ice Age (LIA). Freshwater is a critical resource on Easter Island that heavily depends on rain, which maintains the only three permanent surficial freshwater sources on the island: two lakes (Rano Kao and Rano Raraku) and a marsh (Rano Aroi). Under these conditions, the LIA drought could have significantly affected human life; however, the Rapanui society remained healthy, showing remarkable resilience. There are two main hypotheses on how the ancient Rapanui could have obtained freshwater to guarantee their continuity. One of these hypotheses proposes that Lake Kao was a permanent source of freshwater, even during the LIA drought, which led to some intraisland cultural and population reorganizations. The coastal groundwater hypothesis dismisses the use of lakes and other surficial freshwater sources to maintain the water-stressed Rapanui population and contends that the only routine freshwater sources during the LIA drought were the abundant and widespread coastal seeps fed by fresh/brackish groundwater. The pros and cons of these two hypotheses are discussed on the basis of the available archeological and paleoecological evidence, and it is concluded that given the present state of knowledge, neither can be rejected. Therefore, these two proposals could be complementary rather than mutually exclusive.

Abstract:
Abstract The present paper examines the ways in which ritual cursing operates as a form of teasing in (Gabor) Roma communities. By ‘ritual cursing’ we mean forms of curse that are believed to cause harm to the cursed person or people related to them, i.e. cursing studied here differs from swearing and ‘cussing’, as it embodies supernatural beliefs to a degree. While cursing is an archetype of ritual, to date little pragmatic research has been done on this phenomenon, supposedly due to the scarcity of interactional data collected in cultures where cursing is actively practised; thus, the present paper fills a knowledge gap in the field. We examine cursing in interactions where it is used as teasing in order to socialise young children. Since ritual is a means through which social structures are re-created (Durkheim 1912 [1954/2001]), aiding young language users to acquire rituals is a key aspect of community life. However, little research has been done on the ways in which ritual practices are socialised in communities at the level of interaction, which validates our focus on teasing curses. The phenomenon studied is also relevant to previous sociopragmatic research on teasing: whilst in other (non-ritual) sociocultural settings socialising teasing implies aiding young language users to distinguish between humour and offence, due to the potential harm attributed to ritual cursing its socialisation is centred both on harm and the offence in the conventional sense of the word.

Abstract:
Abstract Spatially interested sociolinguistics has cared little about the semiotics of nonexistence. The present article argues that the field would benefit from deepening its interest in questions of erasure and relative absence. A case in point, as the article shows, is graffiti. By analysing some semiotic facets of the erasure of graffiti, the article brings home the point that a semiotics of nonexistence is deeply embedded in the semiotic regimentation of space. The persistence of this condition calls for an analytical sensitisation to less obvious forms of semiosis.

Abstract:
Lysine acetylation (Kac) plays a critical role in the regulation of many important cellular processes. However, little is known about Kac in Solenopsis invicta, which is among the 100 most dangerous invasive species in the world. Kac in S. invicta was evaluated for the first time in this study. Altogether, 2387 Kac sites were tested in 992 proteins. The prediction of subcellular localization indicated that most identified proteins were located in the cytoplasm, mitochondria, and nucleus. Venom allergen Sol i 2, Sol i 3, and Sol i 4 were found to be located in the extracellular. The enriched Kac site motifs included Kac H, Kac Y, Kac G, Kac F, Kac T, and Kac W. H, Y, F, and W frequently occurred at the +1 position, whereas G, Y, and T frequently occurred at the –1 position. In the cellular component, acetylated proteins were enriched in the cytoplasmic part, mitochondrial matrix, and cytosolic ribosome. Furthermore, 25 pathways were detected to have significant enrichment. Interestingly, arginine and proline metabolism, as well as phagosome, which are related to immunity, involved several Kac proteins. Sequence alignment analyses demonstrated that V-type proton ATPase subunit G, tubulin alpha chain, and arginine kinase, the acetylated lysine residues, were evolutionarily conserved among different ant species. In the investigation of the interaction network, diverse interactions were adjusted by Kac. The results indicated that Kac may play an important role in the sensitization, cellular energy metabolism, immune response, nerve signal transduction, and response to biotic and abiotic stress of S. invicta. It may be useful to confirm the functions of Kac target proteins for the design of specific and effective drugs to prevent and control this dangerous invasive species.

Abstract:
Tung tree (Vernicia fordii) is an important woody oil tree. Tung tree seeds contain 50-60% oil with approximately 80 mole ?-eleostearic acid (9 cis, 11 trans, 13 trans octadecatrienoic acid). Fatty acid synthesis is catalyzed by the concerted action of acetyl-CoA carboxylase and fatty acid synthase, a multienzyme complex including ?-ketoacyl-acyl-carrier-protein synthase (KAS). Little is known about KAS in tung tree. The objective of this study was to clone KAS genes and analyze their expression profiles in tung tree. A full-length cDNA encoding KAS III and a partial cDNA encoding KAS II were isolated from tung tree by PCR cloning using degenerate primers and rapid amplification of cDNA ends system. The full-length cDNA of VfKAS III was 1881 bp in length with an open reading frame of 1212 bp. VfKAS III genomic DNA was also isolated and sequenced, which contained 8 exons in 5403 bp length. The deduced VfKAS III protein shared approximately 80% identity with homologous KAS IIIs from other plants. Quantitative PCR analysis revealed that KAS II and KAS III were expressed in all of the tissues and organs tested but exhibited different expression patterns in tung tree. The expression levels of KAS II in young tissues were much lower than those in mature tissues, whereas the highest expression levels of KAS III were observed in young stem and young leaf. These results should facilitate further studies on the regulation of tung oil biosynthesis by KAS in tung tree.

Abstract:
We used simulations to compare the distributions of estimation errors for virtual population analysis using forward calculation (FVPA) and three variants of statistical kill-at-age analysis (KAA). The KAA variants assumed constant, time-blocked, and nonadditive selectivity. Simulations were based on a recreational walleye (Sander vitreus) fishery in Lake Mille Lacs, Minnesota. The focus of our experiments was on how model mis-specification (incorrect assumptions about selectivity for KAA or that kill had no error for FVPA) interacted with the magnitude of measurement errors and fishing mortality. We found that KAA models outperformed FVPA when they assumed the correct selectivity pattern, even when kill was measured without error. Of particular concern was a strong tendency by FVPA to overestimate stock size when kill was measured with substantial error. When KAA was based on an incorrect assumption regarding fishery selectivity and kill was measured with little error, wide distributions of errors and substantial biases sometimes resulted. KAA models that allowed fishery selectivity to change over time performed about as well as a constant-selectivity KAA model when selectivity was constant, and they performed much better when selectivity changed over time. Careful consideration of alternative fishery selectivity models should be a fundamental part of any age-structured assessment.

Abstract:
Female sex workers (FSWs) represent a high-risk population for HIV infection and transmission. In general, their fellow FSWs (peers) also play a role in their level of susceptibility to HIV/AIDS. This paper draws from interview data of 93 FSWs to construct a multi-layer FSW social network model based on their knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP). Statistical analyses of the correlation among the three dimensions of KAP as well as their social interactions indicated that FSWs had basic knowledge of HIV/AIDS prevention but demonstrated little enthusiasm in acquiring relevant information. Their knowledge, attitude, and practice were highly positively correlated. Their attitude was more likely to be negatively influenced by their companions, while their practice was more likely to be positively affected. Besides, FSWs exhibited high homophily in KAP with their neighbors. Thus, during HIV/AIDS interventions, FSWs should receive individualized education based on their specific KAP. Considering the high level of homophily among FSWs, their propensity to be positive or negative in their KAP are significantly influenced by their companions. Making full use of peer education and social interaction-based interventions may help prevent and control the spread of HIV/AIDS.

ABSTRACT The first temperature-dependent proteins (expressed at 37°C, but not 26°C) to be identified in Yersinia pestis were antigens 3 (fraction 1), 4 (pH 6 antigen), and 5 (hereafter termed KatY). Antigens 3 and 4 are now established virulence factors, whereas little is known about KatY, except that it is encoded chromosomally, produced in abundance, possesses modest catalase activity, and is shared by Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, but notYersinia enterocolitica. We report here an improved chromatographic method (DEAE-cellulose, calcium hydroxylapatite, and Sephadex G-150) that yields enzymatically active KatY (2,423 U/mg of protein). Corresponding mouse monoclonal antibody 1B70.1 detected plasminogen activator-mediated hydrolysis of KatY, and a polyclonal rabbit antiserum raised against outer membranes of Y. pestis was enriched for anti-KatY. A sequenced ∼16-kb Y. pestis DNA insert of a positive pLG338 clone indicated thatkatY encodes an 81.4-kDa protein (pI 6.98) containing a leader sequence of 2.6 kDa; the deduced molecular mass and pI of processed KatY were 78.8 kDa and 6.43, respectively. A minor truncated variant (predicted molecular mass of 53.6 kDa) was also expressed. KatY is similar (39 to 59% identity) to vegetative bacterial catalase-peroxidases (KatG in Escherichia coli) and is closely related to plasmid-encoded KatP of enterohemorrhagic E. coli O157:H7 (75% identity). katY encoded a putative Ca2+-binding site, and its promoter contained three homologues to the consensus recognition sequence of the pCD-encoded transcriptional activator LcrF. rbsA was located upstream of katY, and cybB, cybC,dmsABC, and araD were mapped downstream. These genes are not linked to katG or katP inE. coli.

Abstract Studies have covered a variety of aspects related to the translation of political texts and propaganda. However, little has been written about the role that heterolingualism and translation can play in the original versions of these very texts. This article investigates a case in which multilingualism in propaganda was employed to reflect and comment on multilingualism and diversity in the political reality. It analyzes two highly controversial televised election advertisements from the Israeli 2013 campaign and their use of both Hebrew and Arabic in speech and in interlingual and intralingual subtitles. The analysis shows that code-switching and subtitles can play a role in conveying the political message and in masking it at the same time. It also suggests that the political use of heterolingualism and translation in the propaganda itself should be more profoundly explored.

AbstractThis essay introduces Zhan Kai/Siqi Zhai, a little known writer of the late Qing. It focuses on his two "new novels" (Zhongguo xin nühao and Nüzi quan, both of 1907) which it presents in the context of his sketches of courtesans, a genre with which he was more at home. The two genres configure gender in different ways. Whether it be the intended reader, central characters, or narrator, the gender composition shifts when Zhan moves to his new style. I hypothesize that these changes stem from his attempts to reach gentlewomen, an audience newly drawn to novels at that time.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to understand how the new reforms related to key audit matters (KAM) disclosures in Australia may have impacted audit quality by eliciting the perceptions of key stakeholders in the audit and assurance services market. Design/methodology/approach The study uses a qualitative approach and New Institutional Sociology (NIS) to explain how auditors have responded to the KAM reforms. Interviews were conducted with 20 individuals representing identified groups of stakeholders in the market for audit and assurance services in Australia. Findings The study finds there is little consensus between some stakeholder groups on whether the KAM reforms may have improved audit quality, based on the perceptions shared. The findings conveyed that the auditors and regulators, standard setters acknowledge that KAM disclosures are either costly and/or time-consuming to implement. The Big Four auditors indicate these reforms led to changes mainly around internal consultations and independent reviews, whereas the non-Big Four auditors highlighted increased interactions with audit clients. Originality/value This is one of the first studies to examine the perceived post-implementation impacts on audit quality of the KAM reforms (ISA 701) after the initial two years of implementation and how auditors have responded, explored through the lens of institutional logic.

Abstract:
Hearing loss is associated with an accelerated decline in social, cognitive, and physical functioning among older adults. However, little is known about its impact and barriers to hearing health care in any ethnic minorities. The aim of this study was to explore experiences related to hearing loss and barriers to hearing health care among older Korean Americans (KAs). We conducted four focus groups with 19 older KAs with hearing loss and four communication partners. Qualitative content analysis revealed four themes: (a) impact of hearing loss, (b) self-perception of hearing loss, (c) coping strategies for hearing loss, and (d) barriers to hearing health care (price, language, lack of collaborative communications, perceptions about hearing aids, and lack of knowledge). Older KAs were significantly impacted by hearing loss but tended not to seek care due to multiple factors. Culturally tailored hearing interventions are urgently needed to promote hearing health in the KA community.

Abstract We compared the improved Abbott IMx cancer antigen (CA) 125 assay (cat. no. 7A89) with the Abbott CA 125 RIA. Serum specimens were from healthy perimenopausal women (n = 124) and from patients with benign gynecologic and nongynecologic diseases (n = 124), ovarian carcinoma (n = 104), or other malignancies (n = 193). The IMx assay detected as little as 0.193 kAU/L CA 125 (AU = arbitrary Abbott unit), demonstrated up to 29% overestimation upon serum dilution, low within-assay (2.7-5.6%) and between-assay (4.8-8.2%) CVs, and no high-dose hook effect < or = 46,000 kAU/L nor influence from human anti-mouse antibodies in serum of women injected with OC 125 F(ab')2. Values by IMx were 20% lower than by RIA for healthy perimenopausal women (n = 100; IMx = 0.80 RIA - 2.5 kAU/L), and at least 50% higher for those with benign or malignant ovarian disorders at concentrations < 100 kAU/L. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis of ovarian neoplasma vs perimenopausal controls indicated a gain of specificity and sensitivity with the improved IMx assay over the RIA, but ROC performance was the same with either assay if patients with benign ovarian disorders were used as controls.

Abstract:
Low health literacy is closely related to a higher rate of hospitalization and of emergency services usage, leading to billions of dollars in avoidable health care costs and contributing to individuals’ poor physical and mental health. While Korean Americans (KAs) have a high prevalence of general health and mental health problems, relatively little is known about their health and mental health literacy, specifically their depression literacy. This study aims to evaluate KAs’ health literacy and depression literacy, as related to sociodemographic characteristics. An exploratory study was conducted with 681 community-residing adult KAs using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) Scale, the Depression Literacy Questionnaire (D-Lit), and the One-Question Health Literacy Scale. Data analyses were performed using one-way analysis of variance and ordinal logistic regression of health literacy, a multiple linear regression model of depression literacy. Findings indicate a positive correlation between depression literacy and health literacy. Health literacy was also significantly related to religion, English language proficiency, income, education, and perceived physical health. Additionally, depression literacy was significantly related to age, Korean language preference over English, and education. Health literacy and depression literacy education are warranted to address low health literacy and depression literacy among KAs to reduce their health and mental health disparities.

Heyns’ socio-ethical model, which is based on a "cultivar" of the Calvinistic philosophy, provides ethical stability with its theocentric anchor. However, it shows shortcomings as to flexibility and relevancy because a dialectic between deductive and inductive ways of theologizing is lacking. The use of the notion "Volksverband" (national bond) as an ethical pillar in the first chapter cannot be derived from a New Testamentical centre but can rather be connected to the theology of creational orders. Although the chapter contains important ethical directives for internal dialogue amongst (white) Afrikaners, there is very little on the economic, semiotic, restitutional and ecological facets of modem group-forming tendencies.

Abstract Research into the pedagogies employed by CLIL teachers has been limited to date and, as such, has been identified as a key area in need of further investigation (Pérez-Cañado, 2012; Dalton-Puffer & Smit, 2013). This review uses an elaborated 4Cs Analysis Framework (adapted from Coyle, Hood, & Marsh, 2010; Coyle, 2015a, 2015b) as a basis for analysis of studies of pedagogies implemented by CLIL subject teachers internationally and in Dutch classrooms. This allows us to place the Dutch situation in an international context and to identify avenues for future research and development. The following questions guided the review: (1) What appear to be the most prominent international trends with regard to the implementation of the 4Cs in CLIL subject pedagogies?; and, (2) To what extent do Dutch CLIL subject pedagogies appear to reflect these international trends? Findings about pedagogies reported in the reviewed studies suggest that, in general, studies from the Netherlands stand out compared to international studies in several respects. Specifically, there is evidence of a relatively strong pedagogic focus in the Netherlands on developing students’ intercultural competence. The Dutch studies also stand out, however, for not addressing the role that the L1 can play in CLIL pedagogy. Furthermore, a main finding is that both the Dutch and the international studies reviewed provide little insight into aspects of CLIL pedagogy related to subject-specific culture and into ways in which content and language are integrated.

Abstract:
Our aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention for residents in rural China on knowledge, attitudes and reported practices (KAP) on antibiotic use in humans and pigs. A quasi-experimental study was conducted in 12 villages in rural Shandong province, divided into intervention and control groups, covering a two-year period from July 2015 to June 2017. A package of health education-based interventions including training sessions, speakerphone messages, posters and handbooks for residents was developed and implemented over a one-year period to improve the use of antibiotics in humans and pigs. The intervention net effects were evaluated by Difference-in-Difference (DID) analysis based on responses to a questionnaire concerning KAP towards antibiotic use in humans and pigs. A total of 629 participants completed both baseline and post-trial questionnaires, including 127 participants with backyard pig farms. Significant improvements were found in KAP towards antibiotic use in humans, but changes related to antibiotic use for pigs were not significant. Participants who were in the intervention group (p < 0.001) were more likely to have improved their knowledge on antibiotic use in humans. Participants who had higher attitude scores were less likely to report self-medicating with stored antibiotics in the previous year (p < 0.001). Our results suggest that our health education-based intervention was effective in improving KAP on human antibiotic use, but it had little effect regarding antibiotic use for pigs.

The items with the greatest sensitivity in capital and ecology are land acquisition, plant life cycle, mechanical harvesting, fertilizer, control of weed, pests and diseases, seed yield and oil content. This study aims at analyzing the disadvantages of herbaceous non-edible oil-bearing plants and suggests impeding their industrial cultivation for the biodiesel production. The source of information for the proper selection of non-edible oil-bearing plants suitable as biodiesel feed-stocks has been the recent relevant literature. Herbaceous non-edible oil-bearing plants have a low phytoremediation potential and oil yield, but high weed potential. They occupy a large arable area while demand harder cultivation conditions and mechanical harvesting. Non-edible oils from woody plants are promising biodiesel feedstock. However, the weed potential of woody oil-bearing plants must also be considered to prevent their invasiveness.

Abstract:
The use of antibiotics in animals for both therapeutic and non-therapeutic purposes is a major driver of the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). While several studies have investigated prescription and consumption patterns in humans, little attention has been paid to the veterinary sector. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 3002 veterinary students (VS) and non-medical students (NMS) from 12 universities in Bangladesh to explore their knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) about antibiotics and AMR using a self-administered questionnaire, and assess the influence of the veterinary curriculum. KAP regarding antibiotic use and AMR was significantly higher in veterinary than non-medical students, and in first-year than final-year students. However, gaps in knowledge and practices were highlighted, suggesting deficiencies in training. Moreover, final-year veterinary students were found to be more likely than first-year students to use antibiotics without instructions, which could indicate deficiencies in their curriculum. Although the study suggested a positive impact of the veterinary curriculum on KAP about antibiotics and AMR in Bangladesh, critical gaps remain that are likely to contribute to inadequate use in their future practice. Therefore, there is scope for improving educational programs on AMR in professional curricula.

Abstract:
Oral dietary supplements (DSs) include vitamins, minerals, amino acids, energy drinks, and herbal products. The use of DSs is increasing and their manufacturers promote their benefits. Studies have validated some of these benefits, but have also indicated that some DSs can have adverse effects, especially if used without the appropriate supervision. Little information on DS use among Saudis is available. This study assessed the use of dietary supplements among male and female university students with the goal of educating the community about DSs and the dangers associated with their misuse. Online and paper validated questionnaires were administered to King Abdulaziz University (KAU) students between September 2019 and January 2020. The responses were collected and analyzed statistically. Of the 954 KAU students who completed the survey, one-third used DSs (42.9% women vs 25.7% men). Of these, 51.7% believed that DSs are essential for health, 41.7% classified them as both food and drugs, 67.2% were aware that DSs could not replace a healthy diet, and 25.8% were aware of their potentially harmful effects. Multivitamins and minerals were the most used DSs. DS awareness among KAU students is limited. Additional health education is necessary to assist students in their selection of the most suitable DSs.

Abstract:
Political, social, economic, aesthetic and other aspects led to start of reconstruction and renovation of important public spaces – squares – of the most cities of the country. This article aims to review some of the rebuilt city squares and give a preliminary assessment of this reconstruction experience. Estimation of selected squares has been made in the following aspects: the purpose of the square, its design, equipment, greenery and vitality. It was found that in accordance to the reconstruction character, they can be conditionally divided into two groups: 1) squares, the design and regulation of which correspond to the purpose to be visited and used by people for leisure and communication; and 2) squares, the priority of reconstruction of which was a formal design, without a broader research and needs assessment, so they ended up little visited and empty. Seeking for better quality of reconstructed squares, it is necessary to better discuss these questions, initiate public fora with residents and specialists, and conduct professional expertise.

Abstract:
In 1995 Mongolia introduced a national programme of salt iodization to eliminate iodine-deficiency disorders. To investigate the extent of acceptability and utilization of iodized salt, a study of people's knowledge, attitudes, and practice (KAP) was carried out in the capital city, Ulaanbaatar, in 1996 and 1997. A total of 838 people (housewives, parents of schoolchildren, post-partum women, and pregnant women) were interviewed about their KAP regarding iodine-deficiency disorders and iodized salt. In addition, the amount of salt consumption at the household level was examined. Over 95% of the study population knew about iodine-deficiency disorders and iodized salt, and most of them received the information from television and radio. About 90% of them had already used iodized salt. The price of iodized salt is a little higher than that of common salt, but it is still affordable for most people. This study demonstrates the possibility of the expansion of the programme nationwide.

Abstract:
Stress is our body’s way of responding to any kind of demand or threat. It can start with simply too much pressure. To estimate the occupational stress index (OSI) score among King Abdul Aziz University international students a simple questionnaire study, with 100% response rate, was conducted. KAU has largest number of students in the Kingdom. The study of stress, OSI score and stressors are accepted important tools for career and personality development and highlighting of students’ problems. The English version of OSI questioner (CHS M278/EHS M270: Work and Health; Winter 2004) used and descriptive research approach selected to calculate OSI score. A t-test performed between OSI score for each individual section and their relevant percentages. P values equal or less than 0.05 considered as significant. For data analysis SPSS and Microsoft Excel version 2013 was used. Total OSI score estimated was 38.3. Main contributing variables are uneasy lab work (32.6%) and decision-making at work (16.3%). The others are absence of rest areas, research grants unavailability. Less work pressure, low working experience, summer holidays, regular monthly stipend, fewer responsibilities, relaxing exams schedule, less number of days spent weakly are all reason for low OSI score. Physical working conditions contribute little but accident or injury shows no contribution for OSI score. Low OSI score proved KAU international students are working in relaxing environment and feel little stress. Such studies are needed to be done on regular basis to evaluate the Kingdom’s largest university student’s problems and challenges they face.

Abstract:
Nowadays the rights of medical practitioners are not so widely developed as the rights of minor patients. Protection of the rights of medical practitioners is directly subject to implementation of the rights of minor patients. Interaction or legal cooperation of medical practitioners and minor patients has been studied rather little from the scientific perspective. Despite several aspects – introduction of new Internet era in relations of doctors and patients, establishment of judicial practice in the sphere of protection of the rights of patients, the institute of the protection of the rights of medical practitioners in Latvia has not been sufficiently developed yet. Main conditions of interaction of medical practitioners and minor patients are defined both in the Medical Treatment Law and the Law on the Rights of Patients. However, the main feature of these relations is that within such framework, medical practitioners mostly have prohibitions and restrictions, whereas minor patients mostly have their rights stipulated. The aim of the article is to define the characteristics of the rights of medical practitioners in treatment process of minor patients. Descriptive, analytical, systematic and grammatical methods were used in compiling of the article.

Abstract:
Abstract. The distribution of Virgulinella fragilis and the hydro-environment of Aso-kai Lagoon, central Japan, were studied to clarify the foraminifer’s adaptation to low-oxygen conditions. The hypolimnion of the lagoon is oxygen-poor during much of the year. Two faunas (A and B) are recognized, based on cluster analysis. Cluster A fauna consists of species common in brackish lagoons, such as the genera Trochammina and Ammonia, and occurs in seasonally oxygenated waters. Virgulinella fragilis, the predominant species of Cluster B fauna, dominates the central part of the lagoon. This species can tolerate more severe oxygen deficiencies than the typical brackish foraminifers (e.g. Trochammina spp.) and can adapt to long periods of oxygen-poor conditions in coastal lagoon environments, as well as in pelagic to hemi-pelagic settings. In order to survive in the near-anoxia of Aso-kai Lagoon, V. fragilis may have adapted to environments in which little reactive iron is available in the sediment, leaving pore-water and bottom-water sulphide available for symbionts, or may utilize sulphur denitrification processes.

Abstract:
Several lines of evidence support the hypothesis that abnormally elevated brain levels of kynurenic acid (KYNA), a metabolite of the kynurenine pathway (KP) of tryptophan degradation, play a pathophysiologically significant role in schizophrenia and other major neurodevelopmental disorders. Studies in experimental animal models suggest that KP impairments in these diseases may originate already in utero since prenatal administration of KYNA’s bioprecursor, kynurenine, leads to biochemical and structural abnormalities as well as distinct cognitive impairments in adulthood. As KP metabolism during pregnancy is still insufficiently understood, we designed this study to examine the de novo synthesis of KYNA and 3-hydroxykynurenine (3-HK), an alternative biologically active product of kynurenine degradation, in tissue slices obtained from pregnant mice on gestational day (GD) 18. Fetal brain and liver, placenta, and maternal brain and liver were collected, and the tissues were incubated in vitroin the absence or presence of micromolar concentrations of kynurenine. KYNA and 3-HK were measured in the extracellular milieu. Basal and newly produced KYNA was detected in all cases. As KYNA formation exceeded 3-HK production by 2–3 orders of magnitude in the placenta and maternal brain, and as very little 3-HK neosynthesis was detectable in fetal brain tissue, detailed follow-up experiments focused on KYNA only. The fetal brain produced 3–4 times more KYNA than the maternal brain and placenta, though less than the maternal and fetal liver. No significant differences were observed when using tissues obtained on GD 14 and GD 18. Pharmacological inhibition of KYNA’s main biosynthetic enzymes, kynurenine aminotransferase (KAT) I and KAT II, revealed qualitative and quantitative differences between the tissues, with a preferential role of KAT I in the fetal and maternal brain and of KAT II in the fetal and maternal liver. Findings using tissue slices from KAT II knockout mice confirmed these conclusions. Together, these results clarify the dynamics of KP metabolism during pregnancy and provide the basis for the conceptualization of interventions aimed at manipulating cerebral KP function in the prenatal period.
