Despite their sessile nature, juvenile trees in savannah ecosystems are not always easy to encounter. Here, the remedy of choice in animal studies, capture-recapture modelling, is evaluated with respect to plants. During 7 censuses, 4,145 juvenile trees of 8 dominant species were monitored. Using models with joint analysis of live and dead encounters, resighting probabilities averaged 0.88±0.15 for seedlings and 0.92±0.10 for resprouts, while dead recovery probabilities averaged 0.71±0.25 for all age-classes. On the one hand, the encounter enriches one another. However, on the other hand, the encounter caused a lot of conflict because of different perceptions and views. Abstract:
Abstract Corrosions encountered in subsea CRA clad pipe were investigated. The examined problems were 1) localized corrosion at the inner weldment with the oxide scale, and 2) hydrogen disbonding at the interface between CRA and carbon steel of the clad pipe under cathodic protection in sea water. It was revealed that the deaeration of the sea water should be conducted to maintain the corrosion resistance of the tinted weldment. It was also clarified that there was no possibility of the disbonding at the interface because the threshold hydrogen content for the disbonding was about ten times hi

[The final form of this paper was published in the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology.] Project work forms a large part in work undertaken by graduates when they enter the workforce, so projects are used in higher education to prepare students for their working lives and to enable students to apply creativity in their studies as they present a solution to a problem, using technical skills they have learned in different units of study. Projects, both at work and in higher education, may be completed in teams, thus providing experience and the opportunity to develop t

Abstract:
Not only do mountain goats live at the top of the world, but they have also adapted to incredibly harsh climates where few other species are found. After spending time with and observing this particular herd, I’ve learned so much about their mannerisms and personalities. The group dynamic is incredibly complex and operates similarly to how humans participate in these dynamics. Every encounter I have with these special animals gives me a deeper awe and appreciation for how capable and resilient they really are. This herd lives in a harsh, rocky, alpine environment that yields little water and l

Abstract:
Investigations of recent firefighter line of duty deaths caused by rapid fire progression have highlighted a deficiency in firefighters’ understanding of how certain tactics affect the fire dynamics of ventilation-controlled fires. Many fires are in a ventilation-limited, decay state by the time firefighters arrive at the scene, meaning that introducing additional ventilation to the environment has the potential to cause rapid and intense fire growth. To more effectively teach firefighters about the potential effects of ventilation on a compartment fire, ventilation-controlled fires should be

International students’ social transition experiences are often discussed and researched in relation to their experiences on campus and with fellow students. However, international study also involves interactions and connections within students’ local communities beyond formal campus spaces. This paper reports on findings from a recent DAAD-funded research study which focused on the ways international students experience multicultural encounters within their local German communities, using photo-elicitation interviews with 45 students and 6 international office leaders. The Mojave desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) inhabits the Mojave and Colorado Deserts in the southwestern United States. The Lake Mead National Recreation Area (NRA) spans the Colorado River corridor in Arizona and Nevada and sits at an ecologically important intersection of the listed and unlisted Mojave tortoise populations. A large portion of the Lake Mead NRA contains suitable desert tortoise habitat, but no contemporary estimates of population densities exist for different areas of the recreation area. Introduction and Importance: Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is an uncommon postoperative complication of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). Radiological investigations such as abdominal ultrasonography (USG) and computed tomography (CT) are crucial to evaluate and diagnose intra-abdominal abscesses, especially hepatic collections. Case Presentation: A 66-year-old female patient with multiple comorbidities, including urticaria requiring monoclonal antibody therapy (humera). She underwent an uneventful RYGB to treat her weight regain and reflux after a prior sleeve gastrectomy and presented with dif

Abstract:
Death could be considered the ultimate uniting factor (it comes for us all). However, it is not a homogenous occurrence but an experience as individual and nuanced as the lives we live. Consequently, Digital Afterlives: A Verbatim Play About Death in a Digital Age was created not as a prescriptive but descriptive research output that honours the nuance and subjectivity of experiences of loss and individual grief journeys. Constructed entirely from empirical materials collected in recorded interviews, the play illuminates some of the experiences encountered by bereaved New Zealanders as they na
