Abstract:
Living mulch is an eco-friendly practice of growing fast growing leguminous crops in the interrow spaces of a crop with an objective of weed suppression, thereby reducing the use of herbicides for sustainable agriculture. It reduces the negative impacts of intensive agriculture such as land degradation and is a practical way to boost agroecosystem biodiversity. Other benefits include increase in organic carbon content and available nutrient content, improvement in water holding capacity, reduction in soil erosion and pest and diseases. The selection of live mulch species is an important factor

Maritime forests are coastal ecosystems that stabilize coastlines, recharge aquifers, and provide protection against storm surges. The range of these forests has been decreasing due to threats such as urban expansion, clearing for agriculture, climate change, and an influx of native but competitive loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) from pine plantations. To restore maritime forests, southern live oak (Quercus virginiana Mill.) should be established as the dominant canopy species; however, knowledge of how to grow live oak in a restoration setting is limited. The task is much more daunting in the fragile ecosystem of the Eastern Himalayan region of India. Conservation tillage is regarded as the best crop production practice in the Indian Himalayas, where soil is very easily erodible. It is not to be confused with the amount of compensation one would receive for a wrongful death. Abstract:
We trace the effects of a devastating earthquake that occurred in Northern Pakistan in 2005. Using a new dataset from a survey conducted four years after the earthquake, we first show that the distance of the household from the fault line was not correlated with pre-existing household characteristics, while it was strongly predictive of earthquake-related damage and mortality. Through emergency relief aid, households living close to the fault line reported receiving substantial cash compensation that amounted to as much as 150% of their annual household consumption expenditure. Abstract:
Not only do mountain goats live at the top of the world, but they have also adapted to incredibly harsh climates where few other species are found. After spending time with and observing this particular herd, I’ve learned so much about their mannerisms and personalities. The group dynamic is incredibly complex and operates similarly to how humans participate in these dynamics. Every encounter I have with these special animals gives me a deeper awe and appreciation for how capable and resilient they really are. This herd lives in a harsh, rocky, alpine environment that yields little water and l

Abstract:
Approximately one in seven people in Latin America and the Caribbean live with a disability, yet barriers and needs are often overlooked, and policies intended to foster inclusion remain understudied. This report examines the effectiveness of disability inclusion policies across education, health, labor markets, and social protection. A closer look at the realities for people with disabilities in the region reveals a much more nuanced picture of the magnitude of gaps, quality of services, and distinct challenges compared to those without disabilities. By highlighting evidence-based interventio

Abstract:
There is a wealth of conversation around the world today on the future of the workplace and the skills required for children to thrive in that future. Most everyone can agree that the schools of today are not effectively preparing children for that workforce, but it’s much more difficult to predict what it will actually look like. Instead perhaps we should be focusing on outlining a few key principles that will help people thrive in life no matter what happens. Without certain core abilities, even extreme knowledge or job-specific skills will not be worth much in the long run. To address these

Abstract:
Media literacy education is a tool for combating mis/disinformation in a time where there is so much uncertainty. The lack of credible news means that we are left with news stories driven by propaganda, misinformation, or manipulated content and even fiction or just fallacy. This impacts every person in every situation and influences the conversations, policy, and beliefs whether we are talking about race, gender, economics of poverty, climate, and so much more. This paper takes the reader through explaining the value of this instruction, the process of understanding the key questions of media

Full text
Abstract:
The goals of this research program were to: (1) assess the mechanical and fracture properties of spiral-welded pipe, (2) characterize the crack initiation and maximum load carrying capacity, and (3) determine stress magnification factors for helical flaws. Flattened-strap tensile tests, Charpy V-notch (CVN) tests, and JIC fracture toughness tests were performed to meet the first objective. Results showed that tensile properties are independent of specimen orientation, while CVN data varied by as much as 3 to 1 for parallel vs. transverse machined specimens. Abstract:
Literature shows that IDPs struggle to access services, which has an impact on their ability to live healthy and fulfilling lives. In the field of health, IDPs frequently have worse outcomes than both host community and refugees. This rapid literature review finds evidence of a number of policy and administrative barriers to access of services for internally displaced persons (IDPs). IDPs remain citizens of the countries in which they are displaced, and the national authorities retain responsibility for meeting their basic rights. However, their displacement, loss of livelihoods and assets, la

Muñoz, Ercio, and Melanie Saavedra. How Much Should We Trust Non-Probabilistic Web-based Surveys on LGBTI People? Evidence from Mexico. Inter-American Development Bank, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0013242.

Full text
Abstract:
Although many web-based non-probabilistic surveys are the only source of data on gender and sexual diversity in many countries, there is little evidence of their accuracy in characterizing LGBTI people. This paper studies how precisely the experiences of LGBTI people are captured by web-based non-probabilistic surveys. We compare several statistics about LGBTI people obtained from a web-based non-probabilistic survey with over 14,000 respondents to statistics derived from a large-scale, nationally representative survey with more than 44,000 respondents that was specifically designed to charact

Abstract:
Much has been written about Holocaust museums and memorials. Ljiljana Radonić focuses in this text[1] to the way the Shoah is exhibited in national museums (especially in Central and Eastern Europe) yet devoted to other tragic events. But why? It is not so much a matter of repairing an omission as of evoking Jewish suffering as a model. In many cases, the message to be understood: “Our” victims suffered “like the Jews”.
