Plant viruses have developed a number of strategies that enable them to become obligate intracellular parasites of many agricultural crops. Potato virus X (PVX) belongs to a group of positive-sense, single-stranded plant RNA viruses that replicate on host membranes and form elaborate structures known as viral replication complexes (VRCs) that contain viral RNA (vRNA), proteins and host cellular components. VRCs are the principal sites of viral genome replication, virion assembly and packaging of vRNA for export into neighbouring cells. For many animal viruses, host membrane association is cruc

Currently aquaculture is the largest growing food sector in the world, however, its future growth is limited by its heavy reliance on fishmeal (FM). Overfishing of wild marine fish stocks used for FM is putting too much pressure on the stocks, making FM unsustainable as a dominant protein source as aquaculture continues to grow. Plant proteins (PP) are an ideal alternative to FM because of their wide availability and relatively low cost. Soybean meal (SBM) is the most commonly used PP in aquaculture, but its inclusion in feeds is limited due to reduced digestibility and the presence of antinut

Plant imagery abounds in Elizabeth Barrett Browning's novel-poem, Aurora Leigh, and critical readings have not thoroughly explored the meaning of and intent behind that imagery. Plant metaphor and images in Aurora Leigh are used to challenge the concept of Victorian women's inherently inferior "nature" and to present an argument for female equality. When traced throughout the work, plant imagery foreshadows Aurora and Marian's ultimate personal independence and familial harmony and helps the reader to understand the poem's controversial ending. Abstract Most plants grow in association with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi in their roots forming the so-called AM symbiosis. AM symbiosis is usually beneficial to the host as it improves plant survival and performance. However, AM symbiosis also entails a cost to the plant in terms of the carbon allocated to the fungus. In sexually dimorphic plants, more than one type of individual can be recognised with regard to their sexual expression or gender. The cost of reproduction in these plants will differ in relation to the relative investment in male versus female function, as the female and

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine if the complexity and surface area of a macrophyte’s structure has an influence on invertebrate colonization, and to determine the influence of two non-native species on invertebrate colonization. Three plant architectures were compared. Floating leaved plants were represented by the following species: Nuphar lutea, Nymphaea odorata, and Brasenia schreberi. Moderately dissected leaved plants were represented by Potamogeton natans, and highly dissected leaved plants were represented by two non-native species, Myriophyllum spicatum and Myriophyllum hete

Abstract:
Minimal processing of fresh-cut pineapple (Ananas comosus L.) is time and labour consuming as it has thick inedible skin and large crown. Liberation of cellular contents at the site of wounding can promote the growth of microorganisms and limit the storage life of fresh-cut pineapple. Therefore, ultrasound treatment at different power input and exposure time was used to investigate its effectiveness on the storage life of fresh-cut pineapple. To determine the antimicrobial effect of ultrasound on the proliferation of spoilage microorganisms three different ultrasound power inputs (17, 25 and 2

Abstract:
Explaining the origin and maintenance of biodiversity is a central goal in ecology and evolutionary biology. Some of the most important, theoretical explanations for this diversity centre on the evolution of life histories. Comparative studies on life history evolution, have received significant attention in the zoological literature, but have lagged in plants. Recent developments, however, have emphasised the value of comparative analysis of data for many species to test existing theories of life history evolution, as well as to provide the basis for developing additional or alternative theor

Abstract:
Primers were designed to reveal pararetrovirus-like sequences from potato (Solanum tuberosum) by PCR. One primer pair covered an area of the reverse transcriptase region, others covered the end of a transactivator and a repetitive region. The sequences obtained ranged from 800 to 1100 bp and had homology to known sequences of TPV (tobacco pararetrovirus) and TVCV (Tobacco vein clearing virus). Aligning the sequences from the potato genome gave a phylogenetic clustering into three different groups. Genomic Southern hybridization was used to confirm the results, with probes hybridizing to the fu
