In Botswana, street food vending, the most visible form of the informal sector trading, has evolved to be a survivalist activity that women populate. However, along with many positive benefits of tourism there are many negative impacts on economic, social and environmental aspects of communities. Such alterations often lead to full tourism-dependent livelihoods, affecting the sustainability of traditional livelihoods due to the unreliability of the tourism industry. Forests play fundamental roles in supporting rural livelihoods in Ghana. They form an integral part of the rural economy, providing subsistence goods and services as well as items of trade. Indeed, wild plants and animals have traditionally been the major insurance of many rural households against food and livelihood insecurity. It is an important issue across southern Africa, raising questions of governance, livelihood security and conservation. WIldlife is a 'fugitive' and 'mobile' resource that traverses the spatially fixed tenure of communal lands, national parks and public forest reserves. The management of wildlife therefore requires that spatially defined proprietorial rights accommodate wildlife's temporal forage use. Land may bebounded in tenure, but if bounded by fences its utility as wildlife habitat is undermined.
