Abstract:
This paper examines how a person’s life may be shaped by living with a sense of the mystery of reality. What virtues, if any, are encouraged by such a sense? The first section rehearses a radical ‘doctrine of mystery’, according to which reality as it anyway is, independently of human perspectives, is ineffable. It is then argued that a sense of mystery may provide ‘measure’ for human lives. For it is possible for a life to be ‘consonant’ with this sense – through exercising humility, for example – and even to emulate mystery. A further section corrects a misunderstanding about the connection between a sense of mystery and the virtues it invites, while a final section considers the relationship between living with mystery and religious faith.

Abstract:
t Positioned at the juncture of literature and linguistics, this thesis undertakes a stylistic analysis of the English translation of Gandhi's autobiography The Story of My Experiments with Truth (1940), the most widely read version of the text both within and without India. Despite the continuing scholarly interest in all aspects of Gandhi's life and work, his autobiography has garnered little critical attention. Those few critics who have engaged with the text have largely approached it as a biographical representation, failing to capitalise on the self-reflexivity characteristic of the genre. This thesis employs cognitive and corpus stylistic models to interrogate Gandhi's self-representation. In so doing, it challenges prevalent assumptions of the text's linguistic "artlessness" and endeavours to debunk concomitant myths of the author's psychological "simplicity". It draws upon Catherine Emmott's (2002) cognitive stylistic typology of "split selves" to problematise the textual representation of Gandhi's selfhood. Given the centrality of empathy to Gandhian ideology, theoretical and methodological frameworks of narrative empathy are integrated into a corpus linguistic analysis which probes the presence of potentially empathetic. linguistic markers in the text. It concludes by analysing the text's linguistic and conceptual metaphor use through application of a modified version of Conceptual Metaphor Theory, thereby simultaneously challenging received critical opinion as to the text's literary and linguistic 'simplicity' and exposing its writer- subject's underlying belief-systems. Through the application of corpus and cognitive linguistic models of analysis, this thesis reveals both the linguistic intricacies of Gandhi's autobiography and the psychological complexities of its writer-subject. In so doing, it challenges prevalent, unsubstantiated critical assumptions regarding both text and writer and builds upon nascent scholarship that questions the myth of Gandhi's selfhood.

Simos, Emmanouil. "A sceptical aesthetics of existence : the case of Michel Foucault." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/277823.

Full text
Abstract:
A Sceptical Aesthetics of Existence: The Case of Michel Foucault Emmanouil Simos (Hughes Hall) Michel Foucault's genealogical investigations constitute a specific historical discourse that challenges the metaphysical hypostatisation of concepts and methodological approaches as unique devices for tracking metaphysically objective truths. Foucault's notion of aesthetics of existence, his elaboration of the ancient conceptualisation of ethics as an 'art of living' (a technē tou biou), along with a series of interconnected notions (such as the care of the self) that he developed in his later work, have a triple aspect. First, these notions are constitutive parts of his later genealogies of subjectivity. Second, they show that Foucault contemplates the possibility of understanding ethics differently, opposed to, for example, the traditional Kantian conceptualisation of morality: he envisages ethics in terms of self-fashioning, of aesthetic transformation, of turning one's life into a work of art. Third, Foucault employs these notions in self-referential way: they are considered to describe his own genealogical work. This thesis attempts to show two things. First, I defend the idea that the notion of aesthetics of existence was already present in a constitutive way from the beginning of his work, and, specifically, I argue that it can be traced in earlier moments of his work. Second, I defend the idea that this notion of aesthetics of existence is best understood in terms of the sceptical stance of Sextus Empiricus. It describes an ethics of critique of metaphysics that can be understood as a nominalist, contextualist, and particularist stance. The first chapter discusses Foucault's late genealogy of the subject. It formulates the interpretative framework within which Foucault's own conceptualisation of the aesthetics of existence can be understood as a sceptical stance, itself conceived as nominalist, contextualist and particularist. As the practice of an aesthetics of existence is not abstract and ahistorical but the engagement with the specific historical circumstances within which this practice is undertaken, the second chapter reconstructs the intellectual context from which Foucault's thought has emerged (Heidegger, Blanchot, and Nietzsche). The third chapter discusses representative examples of different periods of Foucault's thought -such as the "Introduction" to Binswanger's "Traum und Existenz" (1954), Histoire de la folie (1961), and Histoire de la sexualité I. La volonté de savoir (1976)- and shows in which way they constitute concrete instantiations of his sceptical aesthetics of existence. The thesis concludes with responses to a number of objections to the sceptical stance here defended.

West, Emma Kuliana. "Bald truths : living and coming to terms with alopecia areata hair loss." Thesis, University of Essex, 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.537953.

Full text
Abstract:
This research set out to enhance our understanding of what it means to live with hair loss diagnosed as alopecia areata (AA), exploring how individuals adapted over time. This was achieved through depth interview with 33 persons (19 women; 14 men) living with various levels of hair loss severity and duration. There is a growing body of quantitative evidence indicating that the condition can be emotionally, psychologically and socially devastating. This investigation explored the issue qualitatively, directly from the perspectives of those affected, so as to gain a fuller perspective on negative outcomes for men and women. Results revealed how a great deal of uncertainty accompanied the early AA career and much effort was invested as individuals attempted to make sense of their experiences and exert control over the condition. As hair loss worsened and physical appearance became increasingly `different', questions of identity and self came to the fore, causing those affected to feel that the essence of their personhood was under threat. Over time some adapted more successfully than others, although those most zealous in their efforts to keep it hidden from others undoubtedly led the most restricted lives. Both men and women expressed negative feelings about their hair loss, particularly from the head and around the eyes. However, there were also clear gender differences in meanings according to hair loss in particular body areas. Moreover, women invested more in `normalising' their appearance. I have argued that simplistic assumptions regarding the heightened threat for women undermine the gravity for men and contribute towards the difficulty many men experience in seeking and gaining support. This research represents a preliminary step towards a fuller understanding of the experience of living with AA. It is anticipated that these findings will enable professionals to improve the planning and delivery of health care for A. A.

Abstract:
Environmental justice is a part of the system of natural, ethnic, geographic-ecological, restorative and international justice and a system of solutions in the field of global issues. Environmental justice includes compatibility, hatchability and sequence, equality, freedom, truth, responsibility of all forms of life on the planet and in space in their habitats, not claiming for the habitats of other living forms. Therefore, for example, the United States are their habitat only and nowhere else in the world, like any other nation, while the exit of ethnic groups beyond their habitats means aggression and violence. The article also presents the subject of environmental justice. It is the world economic systems. Environmental justice includes also procedural principles of fairness, maintaining natural evolution and self-organization of habitats in space and time; common property of mankind; teleology of alignment and perfection of races and ethnic groups, evolutionary diversity; maintaining the natural cyclicity of life forms; a system of non-violence and solutions to global issues.

Abstract:
Abstract PETRONAS Upstream is cognizant of the need to provide a unified digital production platform to the entire upstream community. The digital platform enables the community to perform analytical, collaborative monitoring & surveillance, and optimization to sustain production and improve our operations. Digital Fields (DF) is a modern digital platform, integrating data and analytical services, that provides smarter insights and shed light on potential insights that contribute to better-informed decision-making and improves the way of working. A big data ecosystem and strong infrastructure is the foundation of this digital platform, allied to existing business processes, it allows frictionless secure flow of data, high performance, scalability to support business operations. Digital Fields platform provides the following features: Scalable to all PETRONAS fields operated in Malaysia as well as International assets Solution architecture that allows fast implementation of new solutions and insights A common company-wide platform with the same familiar user interface and user experience The critical aspect to liven up a digital production platform is to identify first the available data sources. Some fields have the luxury of transmitters and sensors installed at the well head, topside facilities and export pipelines where the data can be easily retrieved from the SCADA system for data acquisition. Some other fields with less real-time data luxury would keep their operational data inside some operational reporting documents. A smart report ingestion solution was developed with the means to transform unstructured data from the operational reports, which empowers the users with multiple options for data upload and consumption while ensuring a single, traceable and auditable source of truth. Digital Fields leverages the combination of Daily Operation Reports (DOR), data with different frequency, such as real-time data, with engineering models changing the way the users consume data and provides proactive actionable insights to accelerate tangible values for the business organization. The solution establishes the foundational digital capabilities for field operations and speeds up data-driven value opportunities from operational data and analytics at scale.
