Abstract This study investigated the variability of indoor radon concentrations in 518 100 homes in the UK. The statistical analysis included measurements in 395 720 homes with downstairs living rooms and upstairs bedrooms. The radon concentration in these bedrooms was found to be on average 63% of the living room value. The analysis of 122 380 homes with living rooms and bedrooms situated on the same floor found that there is a small difference in radon concentration of 9% between the two rooms. The results showed that the ratios of the living room to bedroom radon concentrations were approxi

A "multiple use" of the living room, which is an antithesis of place theory, is tested against the empirical data collected between two different cultures. Abstract:
Prior full-scale fire service research on the residential fireground has focused the impact of ventilation and suppression tactics on fire dynamics. This study builds upon prior research by conducting 21 experiments in two identical purpose-built single-story, single-family residential structures to quantify the impact of how search and rescue tactics are coupled with ventilation and suppression actions and timing. Each fully furnished structure included four bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and an open-floor kitchen and living room. The structures were instrumented to quantify post-ignition toxic gas an

The Covid-19 pandemic had ripple effects that extend beyond the domain of health risks into economic, social, and political domains. These effects were not evenly distributed and exacerbated existing societal inequalities and marginalisation (UNDRR and UNU-EHS 2022: 11). Informal and migrant workers, and those living in informal settlements, were disproportionately affected by the health and secondary impacts of the pandemic, which further impacted their livelihoods and ability to meet basic needs, and constrained their ability to recover given the coping mechanisms they had to adopt (Chen et

Abstract:
The goal of fire service training is to prepare students for the conditions and challenges that they face on the fireground. Among the challenges that firefighters routinely face on the fireground are ventilation-controlled fires. The hazard of these fires has been highlighted by several line-of-duty deaths and injuries in which a failure to understand the fire dynamics produced by these fires has been a contributing factor. The synthetic fuels that commonly fill contemporary homes tend to result in ventilation-controlled conditions. While synthetic fuels are common on the residential firegrou
