Abstract:
Cities are increasingly seen as having an important role in tackling societal challenges related to climate change, while open innovation is increasingly accepted as a new way of working for governments. In the current work, we explore the role of open innovation to tackle global challenges on a city level. In the context of the city of Rotterdam and its vision on sustainability and liveability, seven collaborative initiatives are introduced. These initiatives aim to address both sustainability and liveability goals. Our research shows that in order to have these initiatives contribute to the overall municipal goal on sustainability and liveability, the municipality needs to take different roles. Whereas traditional open innovation literature usually distinguishes three main types of open innovation, namely outside-in, inside-out, and coupled processes, the current study shows that open innovation for sustainability in the city needs a much more fine-grained and elaborate perspective; a multi-level open innovation model that allows for different co-creative partnerships joining forces in sustainability challenges. It can be concluded that governments have a key role in infrastructuring these co-creative partnerships.

Abstract:
Abstract Multiple myeloma (myeloma), is an incurable cancer of the plasma cells that affects many older adults. Over 30,000 new diagnoses and over 12,000 deaths are attributed to myeloma annually in the United States, where the median age of diagnosis is 69 years old. Dramatic improvements in survival over the past fifteen years have transformed myeloma into a chronic disease for many. The disease and its toxic, ongoing treatment lead to significant challenges for patients. In this study we explore the self-management strategies patients use to address the challenges of living with myeloma through semi-structured one-on-one interviews with myeloma patients and clinicians. Fifteen myeloma patients and ten myeloma clinicians were interviewed between September 2017 and September 2018. Self-management strategies emerged in five major categories; managing uncertainty, finding emotional strength, seeking support, medication management, and activity management. The care of MM patients has made great strides as new and more effective treatments have extended survival for many patients. Effective self-management strategies are critical in addressing the challenges of this increasingly chronic disease. Our study explores the ways myeloma patients address the many challenges they face due to their disease and its’ treatment. Findings from this study could inform the development of interventions to optimize and support patients living with myeloma self-management.

Abstract:
This paper will explore the challenges of presenting unmediated liveness of living tissue engineered sculptures and overcoming the perceptual stillness of the semi-living. By looking at the work of The Tissue Culture & Art Project which since 1996 has used living tissue in its artworks, the author explores the strategies of dealing with the presentation of “aliveness” in living, yet seemingly motionless, “objects”.

Abstract:
Pregnant women living with HIV (PWLH) face tremendous challenges in order to prevent their babies’ infection. Coping is a potential buffer against negative outcomes from these challenges. This study aims to describe coping strategies of PWLH. This cross-sectional survey involved 77 PWLH from a public health care center in Brazil. Coping was measured for three types of strategies: Problem-focused, Emotion-focused, and Relationship support. Multivariate analyses identified some coping predictors. Being employed, reporting religious practice and higher CD4/immunity were associated with Problem-focused coping. Lower educational level was associated with Emotion-focused strategies. Relationship support strategies were more likely to be reported by PWLH who had good social support, who had disclosed HIV status to the baby’s father, and who knew their infection before pregnancy. Findings underline the need for HIV interventions focused on social support and participation by the baby’s father, with particular attention to those PWLH who were recently diagnosed and economically vulnerable.

Abstract:
The International Consortium for Law and Religion Studies (ICLARS) chose Rio de Janeiro and the sun-kissed beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana for its fifth conference and, unsurprisingly, the event was heavily over-subscribed. ICLARS was founded in 2007 with the aim of providing a forum where information, data and opinions could be readily exchanged among members and made available to the broader scientific community. Its first conference was held in Milan in 2009, followed by meetings in Chile in 2011, the USA in 2013 and Oxford in 2016. The proceedings from all these conferences have been published, giving permanence and a wider readership to the innovative scholarship which these gatherings have consistently produced.
