Abstract:
It has been widely assumed that academic education lay at the heart of nineteenth century Scottish missions in Africa. This article will argue that a particular form of education that included artisan skills-based, commercial and industrial training was the basis of the Livingstonia expedition led by Robert Laws in Nyasaland from 1875. Inspired by Dr James Stewart of Lovedale, financed by Free Church businessmen from Glasgow and led by teams of tradesmen, the aim of this mission was to establish small settlements that would create a network of trading centres from which commerce, civilisation and Christianity would spread across Africa. The ambitions and character of these first missionaries, not least Laws, exercised a fundamental influence upon the nature and purpose of this enterprise. Livingstonia was the most industrial mission of the modern era in Africa. A practical skills-based education was central to the gospel according to Robert Laws.

The aim of the article was to assess Information Literacy (IL) skills among the undergraduate students at the University of Livingstonia in Malawi with special focus on second year students. A cross-section descriptive survey design was employed whose population included Second year undergraduate students. Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyse data. The sampled students showed high level of awareness of types of information sources but had problems in identifying diverse information resources and their usage. Besides, participants demonstrated lack of skills in information search and Web retrieval techniques. With respect to evaluation of information, the sampled students did not know the various methods of evaluating information sources. The article concludes that the majority of students at the University of Livingstonia did not demonstrate adequate information literacy skills. Therefore, among others, the study recommends advocacy and awareness campaigns for information search techniques and designing of a formal IL curriculum

Abstract:
During the first few decades of the 20th century, the Nkhoma mission of the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa became involved in an ecumenical venture that was initiated by the Church of Scotland’s Blantyre mission, and the Free Church of Scotland’s Livingstonia mission in central Africa. Geographically sandwiched between these two Scots missions in Nyasaland (presently Malawi) was Nkhoma in the central region of the country. During a period of history when the DRC in South Africa had begun to regressively disengage from ecumenical entanglements in order to focus on its developing discourse of Afrikaner Christian nationalism, this venture in ecumenism by one of its foreign missions was a remarkable anomaly. Yet, as this article illustrates, the ecumenical project as finalized at a conference in 1924 was characterized by controversy and nearly became derailed as a result of the intransigence of white DRC missionaries on the subject of eating together with black colleagues at a communal table. Negotiations proceeded and somehow ended in church unity despite the DRC’s missionaries’ objection to communal eating. After the merger of the synods of Blantyre, Nkhoma and Livingstonia into the unified CCAP, distinct regional differences remained, long after the colonial missionaries departed. In terms of its theological predisposition, especially on the hierarchy of social relations, the Nkhoma synod remains much more conservative than both of its neighboring synods in the CCAP to the south and north. Race is no longer a matter of division. More recently, it has been gender, and especially the issue of women’s ordination to ministry, which has been affirmed by both Blantyre and Livingstonia, but resisted by the Nkhoma synod. Back in South Africa, these events similarly had an impact on church history and theological debate, but in a completely different direction. As the theology of Afrikaner Christian nationalism and eventually apartheid came into positions of power in the 1940s, the DRC’s Nkhoma mission in Malawi found itself in a position of vulnerability and suspicion. The very fact of its participation in an ecumenical project involving ‘liberal’ Scots in the formation of an indigenous black church was an intolerable digression from the normative separatism that was the hallmark of the DRC under apartheid. Hence, this article focuses on the variegated entanglements of Reformed Church history, mission history, theology and politics in two different 20th-century African contexts, Malawi and South Africa.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper examines Scottish missionary perceptions of African healers, and the relationships between the missionaries and local healers in what is now Northern Malawi during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Analysing the Livingstonia missionary writings from the missionary doctor Walter Elmslie to the popular missionary author Donald Fraser and the amateur anthropologist T. Cullen Young, it is argued that, despite major differences and changes in the missionaries' perceptions regarding African healers, there were also important continuities. The paper also examines in detail the relationships between Elmslie and the family of African healer Kalengo Tembo. It is argued that the careful study of missionary writings, even blatant missionary propaganda, can offer novel insights not only into missionary discourse, but also into the historical interaction between Africans and missionaries in the field of medicine and healing.

Abstract:
Purpose – The aim of this research was to study collection development practices in some selected private university libraries in Malawi with special focus on University of Livingstonia and Adventist University Libraries. Design/methodology/approach – This research employed a case study approach that made use of both quantitative and qualitative methods. Data were collected using interview guides and coding schedules. Interviews were conducted with university librarians of the two institutions. Self-administered questionnaires were administered to the Finance Officers and University Librarians of the institutions covered by the study to collect financial statistics and data relating to collection development. Qualitative data were analysed thematically while quantitative data were analysed using Ms Excel. Findings – Findings of the study indicated that private university libraries in this study are funded mainly by parent institutions. Funding is not adequate as is the case with public university libraries in the country. This had adversely affected collection development practices that include purchase of materials and staff training. The two institutions, however, differed in terms of the other collection development activities they undertook, and magnitude of the challenges they faced, something that was attributed to slight difference in terms of funding they got from parent institutions. Practical implications – The study sheds light on the collection development practices of University of Livingstonia Library and Adventist University Library, and challenges facing them. Some of these findings mirror those of other libraries not only in this sector, but also public university libraries in the country. Suggestions on how the collection development challenges facing the two libraries could be tackled have been made. It is hoped that the suggestions made could benefit other libraries who find themselves in a similar situation, if implemented. The study findings could also inform future researchers venturing in the same field. Originality/value – Very little is known about the collection development practices of private university libraries not only in Malawi but the world at large owing to lack of significant research undertaken on the topic. This study is, therefore, significant because its findings fill up the existing knowledge gap. If acted on, recommendations made could also help solve some of the challenges that are being faced.

A gravestone in a Teignmouth cemetery displays the following inscription: Robert ArthingtonBorn at Leeds May 20th, 1823Died at Teignmouth Oct. 9th, 1900His life and his wealth were devoted to the spread of the Gospel among the Heathen. That unassuming epitaph bears testimony to one of the most remarkable figures in the story of Victorian missionary expansion. The missionary movement from both Britain and North America depended for its regular income on the enthusiasm of the small-scale contributor, but the munificence of the wealthy was essential to the financing of special projects or the opening up of new fields. The role of, for example, the jam manufacturer William Hartley as treasurer of the Primitive Methodist Missionary Society, or of the chemical manufacturers James and John Campbell White in providing much of the finance for the Free Church of Scotland’s Livingstonia Mission, is relatively well known.

Abstract:
In this article the specific focus is on the position of the General Assembly in the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) in Malawi. Though the General Assembly was meant to foster a closer unity of the constituent synods, it still remains an unstable entity, and has been so over the years due to the autonomy of the synods; much more so in recent years because of disputes among the synods. This especially applies to the border disputes between the Synod of Livingstonia and the Nkhoma Synod. Though the 2013 General Assembly has somewhat healed the tension, the future of the General Assembly is likely not to be a vibrant one as long as the synods do not fully surrender their autonomy to a body that is supposed to be above them administratively. However, this appears not to be the synods’ option in the nearest future, thereby perpetuating the loftiness of the General Assembly without its accompanying powers.

AbstractIn 1965, A. Livingston conjectured the $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-linear independence of logarithms of values of the sine function at rational arguments. In 2016, S. Pathak disproved the conjecture. In this article, we give a new proof of Livingston’s conjecture using some fundamental trigonometric identities. Moreover, we show that a stronger version of her theorem is true. In fact, we modify this conjecture by introducing a co-primality condition, and in that case we provide the necessary and sufficient conditions for the conjecture to be true. Finally, we identify a maximal linearly independent subset of the numbers considered in Livingston’s conjecture.

Abstract:
In 1776, in the midst of the American struggle for independence, William Livingston became the first elected Governor of New Jersey. Having been significantly influenced by the works of Enlightenment thinkers and philosophes, William Livingston holds a unique place in history as a bridge between intellectual political theory and its practical application in the American Revolution and the creation of our nation. As governor, he oversaw the transformation of New Jersey from a colony – under British tyranny and then under their own state constitution – to a sovereign state – under the Articles of Confederation – and finally to a member of a federal union – under the Constitution of the United States that he was instrumental in drafting and ratifying. This paper examines William Livingston as a case study of early American political thought regarding the concepts of statehood and sovereignty. Through the analysis of his published and unpublished papers, the relationship between these concepts is outlined within a sociopolitical context through the governments he helped shape. Despite the lack of existing writings demonstrating Livingston’s sympathies towards either side of the Federalist debate, a careful study of his writings reveals Livingston to be a Pragmatic Federalist.

AbstractIn an attempt to resolve a folklore conjecture of Erdös regarding the non-vanishing at s = 1 of the L-series attached to a periodic arithmetical function with period q and values in {−1, 1}, Livingston conjectured the -linear independence of logarithms of certain algebraic numbers. In this paper, we disprove Livingston’s conjecture for composite q ≥ 4, highlighting that a newapproach is required to settle Erdös conjecture. We also prove that the conjecture is true for prime q ≥ 3, and indicate that more ingredients will be needed to settle Erdös conjecture for prime q.

Abstract:
The class of univalent close-to-convex functions, K, was introduced by Kaplan [4] and first studied by him. The first important extension to the class of multivalent close-to-convex functions, K(p) where p is a positive integer, was considered by Livingston [7]. Somewhat later, Styer [15] introduced the more general class, Kw(p), of weakly close-to-convex functions by simply taking the closure of Livingston's class K(p) in the topology of locally uniform convergence in B = {z: |z| ≤ 1}.In 1936 Biernacki [2] introduced his class of linearly accessible functions. A function f is linearly accessible if f is univalent in B, f(0) = 0, and C – f(B) where C is the complex plane, is a union of closed (Euclidean) rays with disjoint interiors. In an interesting result, Lewandowski [6] showed that the classes of univalent close-to-convex functions and linearly accessible functions are equal.

Faced with critical shortages of staff, long queues, and stigma at public health facilities in Livingstone, Zambia, persons who suffer from HIV/AIDS-related diseases use medicinal plants to manage skin infections, diarrhoea, sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis, cough, malaria, and oral infections. In all, 94 medicinal plant species were used to manage HIV/AIDS-related diseases. Most remedies are prepared from plants of various families such as Combretaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae, and Lamiaceae. More than two-thirds of the plants (mostly leaves and roots) are utilized to treat two or more diseases related to HIV infection. Eighteen plants, namely,Achyranthes asperaL.,Lannea discolor(Sond.) About 31% of the plants in this study were administered as monotherapies. Multiuse medicinal plants may contain broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents. However, since widely used plants easily succumb to the threats of overharvesting, they need special protocols and guidelines for their genetic conservation. There is still need to confirm the antimicrobial efficacies, pharmacological parameters, cytotoxicity, and active chemical ingredients of the discovered plants.

Abstract:
In Europe, the number of reported sporadic human cases of Salmonella Livingstone infection is low, and outbreaks are rare. We report the largest S. Livingstone outbreak described in the literature having an identified source of infection. In February 2001, an increased incidence of infection caused by S. Livingstone was observed in Norway and Sweden. By July 2001, 44 cases were notified in Norway and 16 in Sweden. The median age was 63 years, and 40 were women. There were three deaths, and 22 patients were hospitalized. Based on standardized questionnaires and retrospective studies of S. Livingstone strains in Norway and Sweden, food items with egg powder were suspected, and S. Livingstone was subsequently recovered from a processed fish product at the retail level. Analysis by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis documented that isolates from the fish product belonged to the same clone as the outbreak strain.

The forecasting performance of widely accessible surveys of expected inflation are evaluated against naive and financial market benchmark forecasts. In the period of rising inflation (1960-80), the Michigan household consensus forecasts exhibited smaller errors than the Livingston Survey of economists and the benchmark forecasts. Unlike Livingston, the Michigan forecasts were unbiased. Since 1980, Livingston forecasts have been more accurate than Michigan, though unbiasedness is rejected in both cases. SPF forecasts, available since 1981, have been slightly superior to Livingston. In forecasting inflation, respondents generally failed to take account of cyclical conditions, and strong-form rationality is not supported.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Born of humble beginnings in a Scottish mill-town, David Livingstone would become one of the great explorers of the 19th century, traversing 30,000 miles of unknown Africa. His pioneering spirit and inquisitive mind brought knowledge and discoveries in the fields of tropical medicine, linguistics, botany, zoology, anthropology and geology. While it can be argued that Livingstone exhibited contradictions and shortcomings as a man, he nonetheless grasped the imagination of Victorian Britain and helped to change European attitudes towards Africa forever. His numerous endeavours were undertaken under the banner of divinely inspired missionary work – ‘If God has accepted my service, then my life is charmed till my work is done’ (Livingstone D. Livingstone's Private Journals, 1851–53. London: Chatto & Windus, 1960:108). Yet whether it was indeed religion that truly motivated Livingstone, or rather that he used it as a vehicle for his other passions, is less certain.

Abstract Seedlings of Livingston Parish (Louisiana) loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) have been widely used across the Gulf and south Atlantic Coastal Plain to reduce the damage caused by the fusiform rust disease. Since this seed-source material provided the first rust-resistant seedlings available to forestland managers, it was used wherever rust damage was heavy, in some cases into the Piedmont north of the recommended area of planting. This paper evaluates the performance of ten-year-old Livingston Parish trees in such an area. The rust resistance of the Livingston Parish trees was outstanding, with 83% being free of disease as compared with only 14% of the commercial controls. There was no difference in growth between the two groups of trees, and ice breakage was not significantly greater in the Livingston Parish trees. South. J. Appl. For. 10:84-87, May 1986.

‘Soap opera’ is a popular television genre that ‘invites the audience to … identify with characters' (Livingstone, 1990). Storylines tend to be shaped by national and local culture, although they may feature a disproportionate number of unstable relationships and tragedies (Liebes & Livingstone, 1998). Narratives evolve continually, allowing scriptwriters to incite viewer debate on myriad topical social issues, including mental illness (Reveley, 1997).

On January 5th, 1903, Mrs. A.M. Dunstan, a designer and dressmaker with an eponymous store on 34th Street, sold a $370 green velvet coat with matching bodice to Clarisse Livingston, a New York socialite. This information, captured from a household invoice within the Edward Livingston papers at the New York Public Library, reveals more than pecuniary data about the sale of clothing at the turn of the century; rather, the invoice contains complex metadata about the relationships between modernity, fashion, and group identity. This paper describes the processes and results of a preliminary study of fashion-related invoices from the Livingston papers and seeks to demonstrate that invoices are a rich, yet often overlooked source of cultural data.

“Work means everything to us,” James Livingston writes in the introduction to his recent book,No More Work: Why Full Employment Is A Bad Idea. The meaning of work, what Livingston calls the work ethic, is our problem. “And we've believed that, even if it sucks, a job gives meaning, purpose and structure to our everyday lives—at any rate, we're pretty sure that it gets us out of bed, pays the bills, makes us feel responsible, and keeps us away from daytime TV.” The time for this mode of thinking, we learn, has passed. “These beliefs are no longer plausible,” Livingston says. “In fact, they've become ridiculous, because there's not enough work to go around, and what there is of it won't pay the bills.”

Abstract:
Buku berjudul The Problems of Contemporary Philosophy: A Critical Guide for the Unaffiliated patut dibaca untuk memahami perdebatan dalam filsafat kontemporer.
Paul Livingston adalah profesor filsafat di University of New Mexico. Ia mendalami filsafat kesadaran (mind), filsafat bahasa, fenomenologi, filsafat politik, serta menaruh minat besar pada filsafat ilmu. Beberapa karyanya: The Logic of Being: Realism, Truth, and Time (Northwestern, 2017); The Politics of Logic: Badiou, Wittgenstein, and the Consequence of Formalism (Routledge, 2011); Philosophy and the Vision of Language (Routledge, 2008); serta Philosophical History and the Problem of Consciousness (Cambridge, 2004).
Karya-karya Cutrofello di antaranya: Beyond the Analytic-Continental Divide: Pluralist Philosophy in the Twenty-First Century (Routledge, 2015)—buku yang disunting bersama Jeffrey Bell dan Paul Livingston; All for Nothing: Hamlet’s Negativity (MIT, 2014); dan Continental Philosophy: A Contemporary Introduction (Routledge, 2005).
The Problems of Contemporary Philosophy—selanjutnya disingkat PCP.
 .....
Abstract:
Abstract Southern forest products industries planted 329,000 acres of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda)from fusiform rust-resistant geographic seed sources during the period 1971-1980, according to a survey conducted in 1981. This amounted to about 20% of the total acreage planted to loblolly by the reporting industries. Of the rust-resistant stock, 93% came from Livingston Parish, Louisiana. Two experiments indicate that the Livingston Parish trees will have about 50% less rust than would have been the case had susceptible local seed sources been used. Livingston Parish loblolly appears to be adapted as far north as Dooly County in the coastal plain of Georgia, and Coosa County in central Alabama. Less than 100 miles farther north, however, its form has been noticeably poorer and late mortality has been excessive.

Abstract:
<p><em>The impact of the environment on the American Revolution in New Jersey cannot be understated as environmental factors ranging from climate to crop yields to geography all intensely impacted the course of the Revolution. This talk, delivered on November 18th at the opening reception of the NJ Historical Commission’s 2016 NJ Forum, explores the relationship between the natural environment and military and political policies through the eyes of William Livingston, New Jersey’s first governor. Throughout the conflict, the environment became a constant actor and foil to Livingston, forcing him to make political decisions in tandem with not only British movements but more frequently, owing to climatic, geographic, or agricultural factors. In addition to looking at Livingston, the article examines the interplay between Livingston and his own conceptions on the environment from his pre-revolutionary past. Finally, the article discusses how average New Jerseyans understood the role of his revolutionary government in the context of various environmental factors. Most Jersey farmers and landless laborers based their support for the revolutionary movement not on ideology but on environmental factors that constantly challenged their loyalty to both sides.</em></p>

Abstract:
The plants in the Garcinia species are economically important. Phylogenetic investigation is needed for these tree species to boost breeding and conservation programmes. Six Garcinia species were investigated for their phylogenetic relationship using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA(RAPD) markers. A standardised procedure was developed for isolation of DNA from the leaf samples of G. cambogia, G. indica, G. xanthochymus, G. morella, G. mangostana and G. livingstonei. Phylogenetic investigation is needed for these tree species to boost breeding and conservation programmes. A standardised procedure was developed for isolation of DNA from the leaf samples of G. cambogia, G. indica, G. xanthochymus, G. morella, G. mangostana and G. livingstonei. The DNA samples were subjected to PCR using 8 random primers. 269 polymorphic bands were obtained and scored to develop the values for the genetic distance. The dendrogram was developed using the software dendroUPGMA and the Cophenetic correlation coefficient of 0.801 is obtained. G. cambogia and G. livingstonei are closely placed with a score of 24% followed by G. morella. It had a 30% index score to G. cambogia and G. livingstonei but is followed by just 31% score with G. indica. G.mangostana is connected at 33.5% dissimilarity to the above groups showing it is an introduced variety. G. xanthochymus is the last link with 37% score in the matrix. The data represented is the first of the type for the species. This will help in further DNA related work in these species. The genetic relatedness among these species is reported and this can be utilised in marker analysis for other Garcinia species.

This article offers a critical overview of the personae Douglas Livingstone (1932-1996) adopts in two editions (1975b; 1983) of “A rosary of bone”. Following a tripartite structure, it deals with the love poems, the translations, and the Giovanni Jacopopoems respectively, arguing that the collection breaks new ground as Livingstone here begins to explore new voices and techniques with which to write about his thematic preoccupations.Such personae permit the poet more acerbic, satirical, or even angry stances, with voices not to be found in the earlier volumes of his work.

Abstract:
This article demonstrates the relevance of the legacy of David Livingstone for the promotion of sustainable tourism. The life and work of Livingstone as a missionary-explorer are analyzed with the aim of distilling those of his thoughts and actions that can contribute not only to the development of plans for sustainable tourism but also to increased ecological justice. The article furthermore shows that current international policies on trade and tourism are not based on principles of equal distribution of resources. A third aim of this article is to consider ways in which David Livingstone’s commitment to the promotion of Christianity, commerce, and civilization in Africa has thus far served to promote legitimate trade and tourism. Finally, the need for economic and developmental policies built on the equal distribution of resources is discussed. The contention of this article is that David Livingstone considered western civilization, Christianity, and commerce as building blocks for the development of Africans, promoting their human dignity and for opening possibilities to create a sustainable tourism industry.

Abstract:
The article presents the results of the research conducted during the 2015– 2017 years. On the experimental field of the Department of Horticulture and Storage of V.V. Dokuchaev KNAU was determined the influence of the plant growth regulators on the formation of a marketable yield and the content of some components of the cauliflower hybrids chemical composition. The early ripening hybrids of cauliflower Livingstone F1 and Kul F1 were studied. The Humisol-super, Vympel, and Megafol were taken for the study. The experience was a two-factor: factor A was the features of the hybrid, factor B was drug treatment. The repetition was four-fold. Field experiments were carried out according to generally accepted methods. The cauliflowers` soil preparation and the plant care were carried out according to the generally accepted recommendations. Treatment with growth regulators was carried out by spraying plants during the growing season according to the manufacturers' recommendations. The first spraying was carried out after planting seedlings in the open ground; the subsequent spraying had been carried every 14 days. An option without treatment was taken as a control. As a result of the studies, it was found that treatment of cauliflower plants with growth regulators during the growing season significantly affects the yield of hybrids. Over the years of research, the highest yield of the Livingston F1 hybrid was obtained with the Megafol treatment, – 12,9 t/ha (+1,6 t/ha to control). The highest yield of the Kul F1 hybrid was 13,4 t/ha (+1,0 t/ha to control) during Humisol-super treatment. It has been proved that the usage of the growth regulators influenced the physical indicators of the commercial yield of hybrids. During the 2015–2017 years, the average weight of cauliflower heads increased by 2,1–11,8 % compared to the control, depending on the treatment. The Megafol had a greater effect on the hybrids. Plants` treatment with growth regulators increased the average volume of the hybrid head by 1,3–11,3 % compared to the control. In terms of influence on this indicator, Megafol and Humisol-super were the best drugs. It has been established that plant growth regulators affect the components of the cauliflowers' heads' chemical composition. The Vympel and Megafol increased the dry matter content in the Kul F1 hybrid by 1,0 and 1,4 %, respectively, compared with the control. The treatment of plants with the Humisol-super increased the ascorbic acid content in the heads of the Livingston F1 hybrid by 4,3 % compared to the control. It is recommended to apply the treatment of plants during the growing season with Humisol-super (1,5l/ha) and Megafol (2,3 l/ha) every 14 days to increase the yield and improve the physical parameters of cauliflower heads. Key words: cauliflower, hybrids, plant growth regulators, crop yields, physical yield indicators, chemical components.
