Abstract:
Lithium vanadyl phosphate (β-LiVOPO4) cathode material for lithium ion batteries was prepared via a novel solid state method. The microstructure and electrochemical properties of the sample were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, galvanostatically discharge/discharge and cyclic voltammetry techniques, respectively. X-ray diffraction patterns showed that β-LiVOPO4 has an orthorhombic structure with space group of Pnma. The discharge capacity of LiVOPO4 sample is 89.9 mAh•g-1 in the first cycle, and in the 50th cycle it is 76.2 mAh•g-1 at the current density of 10 mA•g-1 between 3.0-4.5 V. The chemical diffusion coefficient ( ) value determined from CV is about 10-11 cm2 s-1. Experimental results indicate that further efforts are needed to improve electrochemical performances of LiVOPO4 material synthesized by solid state method; however, it has a higher discharge plateau around 3.9 V.

Abstract:
Port-city reinvents itself in a process that merges urbanism, knowledge, communication, tourism, events, legitimization, experimentation, to find a better connection between the presence of the port and urban planning, their at the same time spatial and economic development. While trying to avoid any form of cultural consumption and standardization, this process highlights the role of the operations of knowledge as being a sustainable lever of the development of the territory. Assuming that the cultural dynamism, based on the knowledge of a territory, contributes to its general dynamism and to the implication of its population, this thesis aims at studying the design and the realization of an innovative knowledge tool, the Port Center, in the particular case of the city of Livorno (Italy), as well as its strategic position in the Old Fortress, the monument-lighthouse of the city. Knowledge urbanism thus offers an innovative perspective : to combine in a single tool the fact of facilitating the legitimization of port’s existence, while participating in the tourist re-launching of the city

Abstract:
Kylätoiminnalla on merkittävä rooli Suomen maaseudulla tapahtuvassa paikallisessa kehittämisessä. Tulokset on esitetty tämän teemoittelun pohjalta.

This work had as objective: to analyze the content addressed in the textbooks of Chemistry of High School on the subject of polymers; Prepare a guide of experimental demonstrations on the subject that can be used by high school teachers; And to carry out a pedagogical intervention in a 3rd grade class at a public school. For the analysis of textbooks, volume 3 was chosen, which was proposed by the National Textbook Plan (PNLD / 2015). This was of a quantitative nature and had as reference the proposed model of Bardin. In the same it was evaluated how the books approach the specific content on the subject polymers and as well as the approach through generating themes. After analyzing the textbooks, a guide of experimental demonstrations was prepared, with reference to the contextualization of the subject under study, which can be used by high school teachers when approaching the topic of polymers. Following the elaboration of the material, a pedagogical intervention was carried out in a class of 3rd year of High School, of a public school located in the municipality of Ipu-CE. This intervention was based on the material formulated by the researcher. At the end, a Likert scale questionnaire was applied in order to verify the degree of satisfaction of the students about the intervention performed in the classroom. In general, it was observed that all the textbooks analyzed deal with the topic of polymers in their collections, however they have deficiencies in approaching it in a contextualized way, as in most of the analyzed collections, it was noticed that there is a small number of demonstrations The same. Also, through the application of the pedagogical intervention, it was observed that by working on the theme in a contextualized way, combined with the use of experimentation, teaching-learning becomes more effective, so this combination of methodological practices becomes a potentiator of teacher making.

Abstract:
Landslides involve many different geological materials around the world. The mechanics and processes controlling mass movements in mountain environment are object of studies and analyses. Landslides occur when the shear strength of a layer in a slope becomes smaller than the shear stress. Various kind of factors can induce this strength variation for example: fluvial action, changes in groundwater level, earthquakes, human activity and also vegetation effects, fault influence, rock and soil properties. This thesis gives an analysis of slope processes to understand how geological, structural, climatic and geomorphological factors are responsibles for instabilities. Liro and Livo catchment basins are the object of this study. They are located in the north-western side of Como Lake, in Lepontine Alps. Several landslides occur in this area. Their study is fundamental to understand the landscape evolution and their impact on the territory. Geological and structural setting of this area is very complex: its relationship with the Insubric Line (and in particular with its brittle branch, the Tonale Line) and the influence on rocks strength are important data to know the triggering area of debris flows and debris avalanches. In particular the Geological Strength Index (GSI) analysis has demonstrated how rock mass behaviour is influenced by presence of structural lineaments more or less conjugated with the Tonale Fault and how this method could be utilized as an indicator of natural failure. The rainfall data show that this area is one of the most rainy zones of the Lombardia Region: the pluviometric analysis involving the calculation of height of rainfall and time of concentration (Tc), have underlined that this regime could induce mobilization of incoherent quaternary cover and trigger landslides. The slope vegetation recovery is an other important indicator for the landslide monitoring because it can give information about the age of the erosive processes. A detailed analysis of three series of aerial photos (1954, 1983 and 1998) have allowed the calculation of extinction and occurrence rates for the analysis of Liro and Livo catchment basins. This aerial analysis and interpretation, in addition to field survey, has shown a high number of landslides classified as debris flows and debris avalanches. A statistical analysis of the Liro and Livo areas and volumes has given the respective limits to understand the potential risk of the area and to estimate the general instability. In fact the volumes mobilized are approximately 450. 000 m3 for an area of 300. 000 m2. A landslide map of Liro and Livo basins has been therefore realized landslide in relation to the lithology (gneiss, limestone, granodiorite, micaschist), deposits (glacial, eluvial, alluvial and paleo-landslides) and erosion processes (debris flow and stream erosion). A landslide inventory is also reported with a brief analysis of the main events divided for sectors (Enclosure A). An analysis of the debris flow in the Inferno Valley, in order to investigate and comprehend the evolution of this process, carried out a topographic survey finalized to morphometric channel measurements, granulometric and geotechnical analyses of the deposits. The study of landslides is not very easy, due to the difficulty in the reconstruction of the topography before the instability. It also hard to determine a relationship between the parameters that characterize a landslide. Analogies between lab-scale experiments and natural events are the input for the creation of a new protocol of analysis of granular mass movement. This experimental investigation has allowed to find out a correlation between principal parameters of a simulated landslide, in particular between runout and the initial slide thickness, initial and critical slopes and between the ratio L/H0 (where L is the runout and H0 the initial thickness) and critical slope. The results promise good evolution: the relationship between zscarp and Lscarp in the experiments is confirmed in Valcirga measures. This geological and geomorphological study has therefore allowed to understand the natural phenomena and the evolution of the mountain landscape strongly affected by tectonic deformation, in relation to the climate change, to acquire ability to analyse these extreme geological events. This study aims to explain if the general assessment of the area can be responsible of instabilities and which factors are involved and their consequences. Ail gathered information will become an important database for further works in the study area

Abstract:
This PhD thesis analyses the many ways of exercising «control», «sovereignty» and a «jurisdiction» on the seas in the Early modern period. Focusing on the Mediterranean sea during a long XVIIth century, it first introduces the different fields and the numerous theoretical bases of an altogether legal, political and diplomatic controversy. From the Gulf of Venice to the Levant seas, from the Tyrrhenian to the Aegean Sea, it examines borders and maritime boundaries in the light of much-debated notions, such as « property », «occupation» and «possession». To this purpose, a variety of documents is used, from theoretical texts to handwritten pamphlets, from peace treatises to cartographic productions, and from Capitulations with the Ottoman Empire to engravings and diplomatic dispatches. A second part deals with tax jurisdiction, using as a case study the history of the Tuscan port city of Livorno : what is at stake here is how the system of tax exemptions in a harbour delineates a space of jurisdiction and sovereignty in the Mediterranean. Livorno, a port of call welcoming merchants and foreign sailors and a neutral harbour, is an emblematic example of « free port », alternately imitated, challenged and envied in the Mediterranean. The present research scrutinizes a whole range of tax exemptions, from customs release to individual immunity and up to the socio-legal conditions of welcome for foreigners. Through a detailed study of maritime litigations and of petitions, the free port is defined, as a conclusion, as a catalyst for maritime litigations, suited for an accurate observation of legal and procedural experiments

Abstract:
The chapter analyzes, from a diachronic perspective, the role of trade with the Levant in the port industries of Genoa, Livorno, and Venice in the 16th and 17th centuries. An historical period in which the international trade system underwent substantial changes. From the expansion of the Atlantic routes to the official claim by the United Provinces and English, to the Italian Mariner crisis and the gradual advance of Nordic fleets along the Western Mediterranean routes. The Atlantic ships had an increasing influence on Genoa’s port industry. It was, however, Livorno who gained the most advantage from the presence of Dutch and English merchant ships along routes which met at Alexandretta in San Giovanni of Acre, at Constantinople, and most of all, at Smyrna.

Abstract:
The ditches and canals of Livorno, also called Fossi, are the most characterized elements the city, not only from a historical point of view, but also and above all from an urban landscape characterization point of view. Due to the overlapping of skills not yet resolved, fragmented information and data exist regarding the real extent of the pleasure craft, the status of the canals, the provision of services and general safety. The hypothesis is to succeed, through a multi-criteria assessment of scenarios, to support and quantify the displacement of vessels that negatively affect accessibility and the landscape of Livorno's Fossi system elsewhere.

Abstract:
We have made extensive efforts to develop various compatible electrode materials for the ceria-based composite (CBC) electrolytes, which have been, reported as most advanced LTSOFC electrolyte materials (Zhu, 2003). The electrode materials we have investigated can be classified as four categories: i) LSCCF (LaSrCoCaFeO) and BSCF perovskite oxides applied for our CBC electrolyte LTSOFCs; ii) LFN (LaFeO-based oxides, e.g. LaFe0.8Ni0.2O3) perovskite oxides; iii) lithiated oxides: e.g. LiNiOx, LiVOx or LiCuOx are typical cathode examples for the CBC LTSOFCs; iv) other mixed oxide systems, most common in a mixture of two-oxide phases, such CuOx-NiOx, CuO-ZnO etc. systems with or without lithiation are developed for the CBC systems, especially for direct alcohol LTSOFCs. These cathode materials used for the CBC electrolyte LTSOFCs have demonstrated excellent performances at 300–600°C, e.g. 1000 mWcm−2 was achieved at 580°C. The LTSOFCs can be operated with a wide range of fuels, e.g. hydrogen, methanol, ethanol etc with great potential for applications.

Abstract:
The Tino Island’s lighthouse. Transformation of a defensive building to a reference for navigationThe special and unique position of the Tino Island in the Gulf of La Spezia, with its complex orography, has strengthen his attitude of sighting, protecting and controlling the sea over centuries. Nothing can escape the view enjoyed from the top of the island, which on the clearest days catches a stretch of sea that goes from Livorno to Genoa. This was certainly noticed by the Republic of Genoa’s engineers around 1600, who probably built the current base of the lighthouse that still exists today. This tower was part of the program to strengthen the defense of the Ligurian’s eastern coast. The structure, of which there are no detailed studies, has a remarkable typological similarity with the ruins of the only surviving coeval tower, Torre Scola, not far from Palmaria Island. It’s not certain that the tower on Tino Island had an offensive character, because its extremely high position relative to the water level would be too difficult to shoot an enemy on the sea, but it is still possible to see defensive features that could be used if the structure had been besieged. What’s certain is that his vocation of control over the sea was never lost, even if Napoleon wanted to transfer this facility to the nearby Palmaria Island. We owe its renovation to the Savoy government, in particular to King Carlo Alberto, who first wanted to build a lighthouse in 1839, adding a small tower to the Genoese structure. Then in 1884, the second lighthouse was built, higher than the first, which can still be seen today and that is still used for the light signals. These structures were added over time to house the lighthouse’s staff. Today the island is closed to the public, as it is the property of the Italian Navy, and perhaps, thanks to this, it has kept intact the features of its architecture surrounded by nature, as it certainly was in the century of its construction.

Abstract:
Developing reliable navigation strategies is mandatory in the field of Underwater Robotics and in particular for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) to ensure the correct achievement of a mission. Underwater navigation is still nowadays critical, e.g. due to lack of access to satellite navigation systems (e.g. the Global Positioning System, GPS): an AUV typically proceeds for long time intervals only relying on the measurements of its on-board sensors, without any communication with the outside environment. In this context, the filtering algorithm for the estimation of the AUV state is a key factor for the performance of the system; i.e. the filtering algorithm used to estimate the state of the AUV has to guarantee a satisfactory underwater navigation accuracy. In this paper, the authors present an underwater navigation system which exploits measurements from an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) and a Pressure Sensor (PS) for the depth, and relies on either an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) or an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) for state estimation. A comparison between the EKF approach, classically adopted in the field of underwater robotics and the UKF is given. These navigation algorithms have been experimentally validated through the data related to some sea tests with the Typhoon class AUVs, designed and assembled by the Department of Industrial Engineering of the Florence University (DIEF) for exploration and surveillance of underwater archaeological sites in the framework of the THESAURUS and European ARROWS projects. The comparison results are significant as the two filtering strategies are based on the same process and sensors models. At this initial stage of the research activity, the navigation algorithms have been tested offline. The presented results rely on the experimental navigation data acquired during two different sea missions: in the first one, Typhoon AUV #1 navigated in a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) mode near Livorno, Italy, during the final demo of THESAURUS project (held in August 2013); in the latter Typhoon AUV #2 autonomously navigated near La Spezia in the framework of the NATO CommsNet13 experiment, Italy (held in September 2013). The achieved results demonstrate the effectiveness of both navigation algorithms and the superiority of the UKF without increasing the computational load. The algorithms are both affordable for online on-board AUV implementation and new tests at sea are planned for spring 2015.

Abstract:
The use of hydrogen as derived fuel for low emission gas turbine is a crucial issue of clean coal technology power plant based on IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) technology. Control of NOx emissions in gas turbines supplied by natural gas is effectively achieved by lean premixed combustion technology; conversely, its application to NOx emission reduction in high hydrogen content fuels is not a reliable practice yet. Since the hydrogen premixed flame is featured by considerably higher flame speed than natural gas, very high air velocity values are required to prevent flash-back phenomena, with obvious negative repercussions on combustor pressure drop. In this context, the characterization of hydrogen lean premixed combustion via experimental and modeling analysis has a special interest for the development of hydrogen low NOx combustors. This paper describes the experimental and numerical investigations carried-out on a lean premixed burner prototype supplied by methane-hydrogen mixture with an hydrogen content up to 100%. The experimental activities were performed with the aim to collect practical data about the effect of the hydrogen content in the fuel on combustion parameters as: air velocity flash-back limit, heat release distribution, NOx emissions. This preliminary data set represents the starting point for a more ambitious project which foresees the upgrading of the hydrogen gas turbine combustor installed by ENEL in Fusina (Italy). The same data will be used also for building a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model usable for assisting the design of the upgraded combustor. Starting from an existing heavy-duty gas turbine burner, a burner prototype was designed by means of CFD modeling and hot-wire measurements. The geometry of the new premixer was defined in order to control turbulent phenomena that could promote the flame moving-back into the duct, to increase the premixer outlet velocity and to produce a stable central recirculation zone in front of the burner. The burner prototype was then investigated during a test campaign performed at the ENEL’s TAO test facility in Livorno (Italy) which allows combustion test at atmospheric pressure with application of optical diagnostic techniques. In-flame temperature profiles, pollutant emissions and OH* chemiluminescence were measured over a wide range of the main operating parameters for three fuels with different hydrogen content (0, 75% and 100% by vol.). Flame control on burner prototype fired by pure hydrogen was achieved by managing both the premixing degree and the air discharge velocity, affecting the NOx emissions and combustor pressure losses respectively. A CFD model of the above-mentioned combustion test rig was developed with the aim to validate the model prediction capabilities and to help the experimental data analysis. Detailed simulations, performed by a CFD 3-D RANS commercial code, were focused on air/fuel mixing process, temperature field, flame position and NOx emission estimation.
