Full textBackground In Sweden, over half of the population are overweight or obese, according to the latest report from the Swedish National Institute of Public Health. Another publication concerning general health indicates that approximately 11 percent of disease burden in Sweden can be directly related to unhealthy eating habits. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the general knowledge, within the Swedish population, about the dietary advice issued by the National Food Agency (NFA). The difference between groups based on gender, age, self-reported Body Mass Index (BMI) and level of education were explored. Method A quantitative method was used, managed by a web-based questionnaire containing 18 questions. The participants were 16 years or older. The collected data was analyzed by using IBM SPSS version 24.0. Nonparametric tests were applied and the level of significance was set to p<0,05. Results In total, 137 individuals participated in the survey, the vast majority were women. Out of all participants, a great number had finished a higher level of education. Data was non-parametric distributed but indicated that general knowledge about dietary advice were good. Factors such as being a woman, being older, having a BMI indicating overweight or having a higher level of education were positively correlated with a higher knowledge about dietary advice. The primary source of information for dietary advice was, according to the participants, the Internet, critically as well as non-critically reviewed publications. Conclusion The general knowledge about the dietary advice issued by the NFA was good across the population in this study. Hypotheses were generated, that people in general might have a hard time to determine what advices that are legit and also knowing how to use the advice in everyday life.

Full textBackground The Swedish National Food Agency (SNFA) has developed five dietary guidelines to promote healthy eating. The guidelines include recommendations for fruit and vegetables, whole-grain, the Keyhole, fish, oil and liquid margarine. Previous studies indicate that the guidelines are not followed adequately. Objective The aim of this study was to examine adult’s knowledge, perceived adherence and attitudes towards the SNFAs five dietary guidelines. Additional aims were to examine various factors related to knowledge, attitudes and perceived adherence towards the guidelines and adult’s confidence in SNFA. Method Via Facebook, a web-based questionnaire survey was announced containing questions about knowledge, perceived adherence and attitudes towards the guidelines. Collected data was processed in SPSS 22.0. Independent samples median test and Chi-2 test were used for analysis. The significance level was set at p<0.05. Results A total of 159 subjects participated in the study (113 women, 46 men). Knowledge of the dietary guidelines was good except regarding oil and liquid margarine which only 48% knew since before. The perceived adherence was highest for the dietary guidelines on whole-grain, oil and liquid margarine. The guideline concerning oil and liquid margarine was also considered the easiest to follow. Attitudes towards the guidelines regarding fruit, vegetables, whole-grain and fish were more positive compared to the other guidelines. The Keyhole was considered less healthy, less modern, more difficult to understand and follow, and the least trustworthy. Those who followed the Low Carbohydrate High Fat-diet (n=11) had lower perceived adherence (p=0.011) and confidence (p=0.023) towards the Keyhole and a lower trust towards the guideline regarding fruit and vegetables (p=0.008). Of the participants, 45% indicated a high confidence in the SNFA. Conclusion The dietary guidelines, mainly concerning the Keyhole and oil and liquid margarine, may need to be modified or better marketed to reach the population in a wider extent and thus prevent diet-related diseases.

Full textSalad bars in Swedish grocery stores have increased in frequently in the last few years. Many other countries have also followed the new hot trend, and the main reason of this increase is the convenience and the pursuit of a healthy meal. The purpose of this study was to examine the risks and routines of the salad bars in Swedish grocery stores, and look into the customer’s attitude against the concept. The Regulation of Information merges two EU directives, and includes rules on how the foods must be handled. In December 2014 the Regulation of Information increased with more claim from the EU. The new claims implied for example that allergens and the date of freezing, for meat and fish, must be labeled more legible. According to this Regulation, the staff in grocery stores must clearly show that the rules are being followed, with help of logs and rules of hygiene. The results of the study show that the staff has a good knowledge regarding routines and risks connected to the salad bar. The consumers in the study show a relatively low confidence in food stores' products. The majority has no form of food allergy, but did not appreciate additives in the food. The conclusion of the study shows that the staff has good knowledge in product safety, but unfortunately the customers’ don´t think so. The result isn’t generalizable – you´ll need more participants in the study to generalize.
Blomqvist, Sara, and Johanna Thor. "Barnmorskans arbete kring kostråd till gravida kvinnor : En deskriptiv tvärsnittsstudie." Thesis, Uppsala University, Uppsala University, Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-105101.
The aim of this study was to examine what view the midwives have on nutritional guidance towards pregnant women, if they give information regarding diets, and if so, how they inform pregnant women, and also what the information consists of. Furthermore, the aim of this study was to determine how the midwives comply with the recommendations given by the Swedish National Food Administration. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among all midwives at the maternity clinics in the county of Uppsala. There were 36 midwives that participated in the study (53 %) which consisted of a web based questionnaire. The result of this study indicated that the midwives frequently give nutritional guidance to the pregnant woman in collaboration with the dietician. The pregnant woman often receives both verbal and written information. The results also indicate that the midwives believe that it is important to give nutritional guidance to pregnant women and that most of them get this guidance at the maternity clinic. The attitude of the midwives is that they, together with the pregnant woman, have a mutual responsibility when it comes to information about nutrition during pregnancy. The midwives nutritional guidance is based on the given recommendations of the Swedish National Food Administration, and the study also shows that the information given by the midwife corresponds with the information that the Swedish National Food Administration emphasise. Therefore the conclusion of this study is that the midwives give an individually adjusted nutritional guidance which corresponds to the recommendations given by the Swedish National Food Administration.
