Abstract:
Sociocultural boundaries come in many forms, and crucially, are responsive to power and constantly in flux. This article focuses on the production of space and unmarked sociocultural boundaries linked to spirit mediums in a historically contested area of northeastern Thailand who are possessed by the spirits of Phaya Narin Songkhram — a key ‘Lao’ military leader of Chao Anou's famous Vientiane revolt against Siam between 1826–28 — and those of his subordinates. Spirit mediums linked to ethnic ‘Thai’ leaders are also found to the south of this area. Through channeling and performing these historical persons, spirit mediums keep alive and reproduce group memories with space-making implications. This article also shows how the mediums' positioning has shifted over time and varies in relation to contemporary power relations, altering the sociocultural boundaries between ethnic Lao and Thai.

Abstract:
An authenticity study on Italian grape marc spirit was carried out by gas chromatography (GC) and chemometrics. A grape marc spirit produced in Italy takes the particular name of “grappa”, a product which has peculiar tradition and production in its country of origin. Therefore, the evaluation of its authenticity plays an important role for its consumption in Italy, as well as for its exportation all around the world. For the present work, 123 samples of grappa and several kinds of spirits were analyzed in their alcohol content by electronic densimetry, and in their volatile fraction by gas-chromatography with a flame-ionization detector. Part of these samples (94) was employed as a training set to compute a chemometric model (by linear discriminant analysis, LDA) and the other part (29 samples) was used as a test set to validate it. Finally, two grappa samples seized from the market by the Italian Customs and Monopolies Agency and considered suspicious due to their aroma reported as non-compliant were projected onto the LDA model to evaluate the compliance with the “grappa” class. A further one-class classification method by principal component analysis (PCA) was carried out to evaluate the compliance with other classes. Results showed that the suspicious samples were not recognized as belonging to any of the analyzed spirit classes, confirming the starting hypothesis that they could be grappa samples adulterated in some way.

Abstract:
The age issue has been with us for some time, and Singleton and Lengyel's six-paper volume indicates it will accompany us into the next millennium. In the L1A = L2A spirit of the 1970s, nonlinguistic accounts for age differences were offered. Yet if factors such as anxiety or ego permeability are responsible for lack of L2 success after a certain age, studies of postpuberty failure either point to the difficulty of reducing affective factors to prepuberty levels or, alternatively, offer support for a neurobiologically based Critical Period. These studies notwithstanding, it is helpful to return to the original question: Is the outcome of adult L2 acquisition always failure?

Abstract:
In early March, Mahesak city guardian ceremony is yearly held in Champasak, Lao People’s Democratic Republic to commemorate the city guardian spirits that were previously believed to protect Lao ancestors from unexplainable natural phenomena. Since the melody of music was believed to mediate the communication between human-beings and invisible city guardians, the sound of Piphat ensemble has become the heart of Mahesak ceremony. Therefore, in this study, the details of significance and religious implication of Mahesak ceremonial music via the sound of Piphat were elucidated. The variety in tunes and rhythms of Mahesak ceremonial songs exhibit the hierarchy of sacred sensations to worship different city guardians with the use of spiritual mediators as sequential representatives of each city guardian. These matters reflect the combination of primordial belief in guardian spirits amongst Lao people, despite the predominance of Buddhism in Lao People’s Democratic Republic nowadays.

Abstract:
During the ageing period wine spirits are changing their color, chemical composition and sensory characteristics. These changes should be simply monitored. The aim of this study was to develop partial least squares regression (PLS) models for higher alcohols and phenols in wine spirits as well as to show the feasibility of the NIR spectroscopy combined with chemometric tools to distinguish wine spirits and brandies with different ageing degree. To get the reference values, the usual methods for the analysis of spirits drinks were used. Ethanol, esters, acids, methanol and higher alcohols were studied. Wine spirits and brandies phenol composition was determined by liquid chromatography. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to classify the wine spirits and brandies according to their phenolic and higher alcohols composition. Moreover, the Partial least squares regression (PLS regression) was used to calibrate and predict expected contents of higher alcohols and phenols in the wine spirits. Success of the classification of samples by ageing based on individual alcohols was 93.8 %, while success of the classification based on individual phenols raised to 100 %. This efficiency of the prediction was evaluated by use of linear discriminator analysis (LDA).

Abstract:
Abstract A simple method for classifying juniper-flavoured spirit drinks is proposed based on the ratio of fluorescence intensity values in synchronous fluorescence spectra. Receiver operating curves (ROC) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were used to compute the performance of the classification. Significant differences in the fluorescence intensity ratios (I316/I287 and I324/I287) observed in the spectra recorded using wavelength difference 10 nm were evaluated by ROC analysis to identify cutoff values that gave ideal AUCs equal to one, thus allowing for 100% correct classification of the samples according to producer criteria. LDA showed that drinks of different producers could be distinguished (100% correct classification) on the basis of their differences in the fluorescence intensity ratios (I323/I287, I324/I287, I316/I287 and I325/I287). These results show that complete synchronous spectra are not required to discriminate between producers. Instead of them, fluorescence intensity could be measured at selected wavelengths.

Abstract:
The thesis I am presenting is a path that. from the " Essay on Natural Law" and through the main practical- political works. leads to Hegel's "Philosophv of Right". It aims al retracing Hegels juridical thought and understanding its peculiarity with respect to the historical context of the time when the tradition of the natural law was thrown into crisis by the birth of the voluntarist approach and the historical method. The investigation highlights some conceptual points of Hegel', philosophy such as the connection between rationality and positivity, the tension between nature and ,history and the relationship between individuals and ethical life. The aim is achieved by underlining both the relationship between right and the philosophy of spirit and the value of right as an objective spirit. The research underlines, in particular, the stature of reason, the role of will and the characteristics of freedom with respect to the basis of law and the issue regarding subjective rights. Moreover. it gives value to Hegel's reflection as an investigation on the relationship among ideality, empirics and historicity. The research also deals with the relationship between right and law and the link that the latter has with a community's set of customs, institutions and social practices. The thesis gathers the modernity of Hegel's thought starting from the conflict between individual autonomy and social order, from the relation between law and state and the identification of right with positive law, as well as from the connection between the role attributed ta the right and the conception of power

Chanunkha, Robert Amos. "Music education in Malawi : the crisis and the way forward." Thesis, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/28200.

Full text
Abstract:
Policy goals stipulated by the Ministry of Education of the post-colonial government of Malawi advocate music education and inclusion of indigenous music in education. In spite of such stipulations, music education is non-practical and the integration of indigenous music in education is unsatisfactory. This thesis attempts to address these issues while focusing on the meaning and purpose of music to Malawians. The thesis begins by tracing the history of music in classroom education in Malawi from 1875 to the present with an attempt to investigate the factors that have contributed to the current crisis in music in schools. This historical-ethnographic study sets out to demonstrate that the ideals and practices of foreign religions as well as Western education denied indigenous music of Malawians a place in classroom education as well as inside and outside the church or the mosque. The thesis strives to portray the consequences of this denial on issues of purpose, outcome, content, methodology and support for music education; trends in indigenous music in ethnic societies; policy goals and statements of music education in the Malawian education; and attitude towards music and music education. Adopting the approaches of both musicology and ethnomusicology, the thesis discusses the role played by indigenous music in ethnic societies and the rationalised views of this music as provided by the musically informed native Malawian practitioners. This discussion further demonstrates how indigenous music structures reflect the social realities of Malawians such as the sharing of resources and theories of life. The thesis argues musical issues that would be the basis for remedying the crisis in music education. A philosophical proposition for modern music education, and the significance of indigenous music in classroom education are argued. An introduction to music education that promotes the use of indigenous music in study and performance is suggested. Sources relied on in the thesis include published and unpublished studies of music and music education; audio/video recordings; and field research undertaken to obtain information about existing indigenous music and their knowledge systems known in Malawian ethnic societies, but not yet covered by existing publications.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses the question of sound on film, that is, the optical imprint of sound in the recording mechanism within the realm of visual music studies. The conceptual critique of visual music vastly expanded in the 2010s as composers and sound artists have explored the predecessors of digital signal processing and audiovisual software, looking back to the earliest technologies that unveiled the nature of sound through the diachronic representation of soundwave structure on the optical soundtrack. This chapter begins by clarifying the historical and chronological details of one of the most cited interactions in the history of visual music studies between John Cage and German animator Oskar Fischinger in the 1930s and 1940s. Further examination of this connection reveals an important technological foundation to Cage’s call for the expansion of musical resources. New documentation on Cage’s early career in Los Angeles, including research Cage conducted for his father John Cage Sr.’s patents, explains his interest in these technologies. Concurrent with his studies with Arnold Schoenberg, Cage fostered an impressive knowledge of the technological foundations of television and radio entertainment industries centered in Los Angeles. Adopting the term “organized sound” from Edgard Varèse, Cage compared many of his organizational principles for percussion music to film-editing techniques.

This chapter provides a discussion about how the power of the Buddha is understood historically and in contemporary times in the little studied country of Laos. The primary focus is on the Phra Bang image, a Buddha image that became the palladium of Lao Buddhist kingship until its disestablishment by the communist Pathet Lao in 1975. This chapter also provides a discussion that demonstrates how the veneration of spirits (phi) has conditioned the manner in which key Buddhist concepts have interpreted by the Lao, especially evident in the New Year’s (pi mai) celebration.

Abstract:
Stress classification at shell and nozzle interface has always been an interesting and challenging problem for Engineers. Basic shell theory analyses shell stresses as membrane with local bending stresses developed at locations of discontinuity and load applications. Since in a shell structure, bending stresses develop to mainly maintain compatibility of deformation and membrane stresses to equilibrate the applied load, a simple stress classification will be to categorize the bending stresses as secondary stresses. This is because by definition, secondary stresses develop to maintain compatibility of deformation and primary stresses develop to maintain equilibrium with the applied load. This simplified analysis can result in errors as in real world 100% primary stress as well as 100% secondary stress is rare if not impossible. The widespread use of Finite Element Analysis has made this problem become even more challenging. In this paper the work done by Chen and Li [1], using the two step primary structure method has been used to analyze the problem of stress classification of a shell and nozzle. This paper is a continuation of the author’s previous work on this topic [21]. In the previous paper, the sensitivity of modelling and the effect of the same on the results were investigated. However, the various approaches adapted in the paper [21], were not exactly in the true spirit of the method i.e in all the models, stresses in the vessels and nozzles were checked separately and compared against the stresses in the vessel and nozzle in the original model where by “original “model we mean the model with the vessel and nozzle modelled together i.e. connected along the space curve of intersection in all six degrees of freedom. The spirit of the method requires that the comparison has to be with reference to maximum M+B stresses in the original and reduced structure ( a “reduced” structure means where the vessel and the nozzle are not connected along some degrees of freedom along the space curve of intersection) and not individually in the vessels and nozzles and the M+B stresses have to be evaluated anywhere on the structure and not just at and close to the space curve of intersection. It is because of these reasons that [21] in not exactly in spirit of the method. In other words, the development of this paper was motivated by the fact that the previous paper did not use the exact spirit of the method and hence to investigate how its exact implementation changes results. This is the approach followed in this paper. A point to note; not in spirit of the method does not necessarily mean that the approach taken in [21] was not correct. It’s just that it was not in line with the way this method was defined by Chen and Li [1] and the present authors used their subjective approach to the problem. Additionally, this paper investigates the effect of geometric parameters like D/T, d/t and t/T on the results which was not investigated in the previous paper.

Abstract:
In a developing country like India with scarce hydrocarbon reserves and also due to variable nature of Renewables in terms of potential, penetration and technology, Coal must be relied upon as a source of energy in near future also, to meet the ever-growing demand for an instant form of energy i.e. Electricity. An alternative to not so clean source Coal appears to be Nuclear Power and this option can supplement and supplant our energy needs despite several concerns from various sources post-Fukushima Nuclear accident. This paper carries out a detailed LCA study of Nuclear based Electric Power Generation System with a wider scope that encompasses the waste disposal and spent fuel reprocessing phases, is modelled and run on SimaPro 9.0.0.48 LCA software with ECOINVENT 3.0 as database. This study also covers the all-important Inventory Analysis for the inputs used, raw material extracted and residuals consequently released to the environment. The results are expressed in terms of pre-defined energy metrics such as ERR and EPBT. Further, the study covers the environmental impact assessment category such as GWP and finally the results are presented with a kWh of electricity produced by this option as a functional unit. These investigations help energy planners and policymakers to compare various power generating options and justify the alternatives to meet future demand for electricity in a cleaner and more sustainable manner by keeping the spirit of Paris Climate Agreement in mind.

Abstract:
The draft tube flow is a two-sided challenge for the operation of a hydraulic turbine. On one side, it is an important component for the performance of low to medium head turbines, where it can provide up to 40% of the extracted energy from the flow. On the other side, being a diffuser with a complex vorticity distribution at the inlet, vortex breakdown instability can occur at part load and generate a corkscrewed precessing vortex that can be associated with cavitation. The cavitating vortex rope, may generate undesired power output fluctuation and/or structural vibration. Therefore, draft tubes are much studied components but hard to tackle both numerically and experimentally. Within the framework of the AxialT project, the flow in the draft tube of a propeller turbine model operating at part load was studied using a combination of two-phase Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements and Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulations. The paper main focus is on the experimental methodology and results. It explains how Particle Image Velocimetry measurements were implemented, validated and post-treated to provide flow measurements in the draft tube cone at part load in the cavitating and non-cavitating regimes. It also describes various image processing techniques used to extract the velocity field around the cavitating vortex rope and to estimate the location of the water-vapour interface of the cavitating region. In the spirit of feeding experimental data to numerical simulations, an analysis of measured velocity profiles just under the runner is presented. Comparison between PIV measurements and preliminary URANS simulations is also illustrated.

Abstract:
Stress classification at shell and nozzle interface had always been an interesting and challenging problem for Engineers. This simplified analysis can result in errors as in real world 100% primary stress as well as 100% secondary stress is rare if not impossible [15], [16]. The widespread use of Finite Element Analysis has made this problem become even more challenging. Several researchers have addressed the problems of stress classification. References [1], [2], [3], [4], [5[, [6], [11], [12] can be consulted for additional details. In this paper the work done by Chen and Li [1], using the two step primary structure method has been used to analyse the problem of stress classification of a shell and nozzle. The spirit of the method has been retained, but several FE models have been made with some deviations from the method in ref.[1], to meaningfully arrive at primary structures.

Abstract:
Abstract Reinforced Concrete (RC) frame structures that were designed and built according to older standards can be damaged during destructive earthquakes as a result of insufficient lateral strength and/or deformation capacity. Such structures must be retrofitted to satisfy the current requirements and to survive future earthquakes. Owing to its high lateral strength and stiffness capacity of an RC wall, the post-installation of an RC wall in a non-ductile frame for retrofit is a widely used retrofitting technique. However, for frame structures with low-strength concrete, the typically used connected construction method on the interface between existing and new concrete may be not able to provide effective force transfer, and may cause unexpected brittle failure in the retrofitted structure. Such unexpected brittle failure may reduce the seismic capacity of the structure and threaten its safety. Therefore, in this experimental investigation, two retrofitting methods that use a post-installed RC wall are proposed to improve the load transfer mechanism on the interface. The first involves a wall with diagonal rebar and boundary spirals, and the second involves a wall with an additional inner frame. A typical traditional retrofitting specimen was constructed and tested for comparison. Reversed cyclic loading is used to test the seismic capacity of the specimens. Finally, post-embedded piezoceramic-based sensors were used to monitor the structural health and detect damage in one of specimens during the test. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the piezoceramic-based approach to structural health monitoring and the ability of the method to detect damage in shear governed RC structures under seismic loading.
