Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Different types of live loading due to traffic may act on bridges. The focus of this study is on normal traffic loading according to the South African specification of TMH7. Heavy vehicles are not included in normal traffic loading. TMH7 represents the code of practice for the design of highway bridges and culverts in South Africa. The aim of the study is to provide an insight into the flexural analysis of skew bridges, under the effects of normal traffic loading. The need for the study arose since the specification of

There are over 40,000 road bridges in the UK and most of them are over a hundred years old. These bridges were not designed to carry today's modern traffic and the everincreasing live loads especially with the introduction of 40 tonne lorries since January 1999. Moreover, in the case of multi-ring brickwork arches the penetration of rainwater and/or overloading with the passage of time breaks the adhesion between the rings leading to ring separation. The loss of continuum behaviour is accompanied by a significant drop in load carrying capacity. It is important that they continue to perform the

The everyday passage of trains over railway bridges produces fatigue damage at critical bridge locations. The amount of fatigue damage accumulated is very sensitive to the stress ranges producing it. The passage of trains produces dynamic amplification of the internal stresses which depends on the train velocity. Therefore, it is imperative to have a reliable estimation of dynamic effects as these directly affect bridge member stresses.
