AbstractWhat is the role of international organizations (IOs) in the formulation of domestic policy, and how much influence do citizens have in countries' negotiations with IOs? We examine these questions through a study of labor-related conditionality in International Monetary Fund (IMF) loans. Using new data from IMF loan documents for programs from 1980 to 2000, we test to see if citizens' economic interests influence IMF conditionality. We examine the substance of loan conditions and identify those that require liberalization in the country's domestic labor market or that have direct effec

Abstract We examine whether corporate bankruptcies influence bank loan characteristics of geographically proximate firms. Controlling for industry contagion and local economic conditions, firms headquartered near a bankruptcy event experience a 7 basis point increase in loan spreads. The effect is transitory and cannot be fully explained by local correlated information or lenders’ financial health. Instead, the effect is more pronounced for informationally opaque bankruptcies and borrowers, and weakened among loans with relationship lenders and lenders with significant local presence.

The loan market has contributed to the success and failure of economies. Examples of such failures are the US subprime mortgage crisis as well as the global economic meltdown that followed. Many factors influence the loan market, making it volatile and vulnerable. As such, it is important to understand the extent of its vulnerability. Such uncertainties emerge from asymmetric information in the loan market that may lead to credit rationing. Many studies have been devoted to exploring theoretical aspects of the credit market. The effect of new International Monetary Fund (IMF) lending announcements on capital markets depends on the lender’s political motivations. There are conditions under which lending reduces the risk of a deepening crisis and the risk premium demanded by market actors. Yet the political interests that make lenders willing to lend may weaken the credibility of commitments to reform, and the act of accepting an agreement reveals unfavorable information about the state of the borrower’s economy. Abstract:
This chapter assesses the spillover effects of the United States’ unconventional monetary policy on the Asian credit market. With a focus on cross-border bank lending, it employs firm-level loan data with regard to the syndicated loan market and measures the international bank lending channel through changes in United States dollar-denominated loans extended to Asian borrowers. It finds that the growth of dollar credit in Asia increased substantially in response to quantitative easing in the US financial market. The results of this study confirm the existence of the bank lending channel in Asia and emphasize the role of credit flows in transmitting financial conditions. The chapter also provides new evidence of cross-border liquidity spillover in the syndicated loan market. It finds that the overall spillover effect was large but differed significantly in Asia by types of borrowing firms, financing purposes, and loan terms at different stages of the quantitative easing programmes.

Abstract:
This chapter describes how White mortgage bankers relied on segregated interindustry networking with real estate agents to shore up their lending portfolios. In doing so, they helped sustain racially segregated buyer–agent–banker networks and loan opportunities. The chapter also demonstrates how White real estate agents undertook such networking and, in some cases, used the racist market rubric to interpret mortgage bankers of color, whom they excluded from their professional circles. In addition, the chapter describes how mortgage bankers depended on the routine of racialized discretion when they interpreted mortgage borrower and property risk. They gave White borrowers and homes in White neighborhoods the benefit of the doubt, assuming they were the least risky and most valuable. By contrast, they cast shadows of doubt on borrowers of color and homes in neighborhoods of color, interpreting these individuals and areas through the racist market rubric. Racialized discretion has consequences for whether and under what conditions mortgage loans are approved.

Blockchain and securitization's benefits go beyond the benefits of loan originating, underwriting, rating assignment and reviews, loan servicing, smart contracts, secondary market trading. This research is based on the qualitative data collected from external sources. The focus is on using secondary data from over 30 research papers, articles, and professional experiments that have been taken into account, and the formulas and conditions gathered from them have been experimented with the Indian economic scenario. The understanding is that securitization has always been a challenge in a country like India, but with the wide range of benefits from the ‘blockchain', it can help improve the challenges and ensure a wider scope of securitization in a country like India, emphasizing that blockchain gives an elevated level of information security which brings about lower ingenuity trouble and disposes of administrative failures from the cycle of securitization.

Power system includes many types of markets. Such markets are generally cleared at certain times, whereas market participators have to determine their operational plans before meeting the actual conditions. Therefore, forecasting methods can assist market players. Forecasting methods are applied to forecast electricity demand. The unknown conditions in the power system are increased by integration of renewable generation units. Forecasting methods, which are used for the load forecasting, are updated because the output power of renewable generation units such as wind farms and photovoltaic (PV) panels have more deviation than power demand. The pool market can be introduced as other parameter that is forecasted by market players. In this chapter, the authors investigate a mathematical model for forecasting of wind. Then, the forecasting model is proposed. Genetic algorithm is applied as an optimization method to handle delay associated with wind forecasting.

In ordinary life, there are many different interest rates—mortgage rates, rates on credit cards, and rates paid by savings accounts—which are mirrored in the commercial world by loans for short-term funding and longer term loans for business development and project finance. The reasons for so many different rates are market conditions and credit risk. ‘Interest rates’ discusses the trading of interest rates, focusing on the interbank market, which is the area where most trading takes place, most quant effort is deployed and in whose development mathematical finance has played a key role. The basic terminology—including zero coupon bonds, swap rate, yield curve generator, LIBOR rates, and whole yield models—are explained.

This chapter considers lending in liberalized markets, where banks enjoy greater autonomy in their choice of borrower, the terms on which they lend, and the exercise of remedies on a borrower's default. It focuses on commercial lending by banks, and thus does not consider the additional issues that arise in relation to consumer lending. Commercial lending by banks can take various forms. Bankers often use the generic term ‘facility’ to describe them all. The most basic is the term loan, where a specified maturity date sets the time for ultimate repayment. The chapter discusses the negotiation of the agreement for commercial loan facilities; the facility and its repayment; conditions precedent, representations and warranties, covenants; the negative pledge and pari passu clauses; and default.

Economic conditions improved since the 2008–09 mortgage market crisis, and home prices recovered in many areas. Nevertheless, over time, growing numbers of older households have taken on greater mortgage debt than in the past. These families are also carrying mortgage loans into retirement, far more than they did in the past. Foreclosure rates for all loans have decreased to pre-recession levels for borrowers under age 50, while for borrowers age 50+, foreclosure rates in 2017 were higher than in 2007. This means that many older homeowners may face the loss of their homes, despite the fact that the economy improved after the financial crisis.

Abstract:
In this chapter the authors consider a cognitive cellular network that allows secondary (cognitive) users to access the bandwidth that is left over by the primary users. Furthermore, the authors allow multiple traffic classes in the system. The analysis of such a network is complicated by the fact that the secondary users face a randomly changing available capacity to serve their demands. The authors start with the multi-class Call Admission Control (CAC) model for existing Primary Radio Network (PRN). Then the authors propose a multi-class CAC model for Cognitive Radio Network (CRN) with different call blocking and call dropping thresholds for different class of services. The authors build up their analytical models for PRN and CRN based on Markov chain. The PRN works as if there is no interference from CRN. But the CRN needs to sense the status of PRN and to utilize the unused channels left by PRN. So the CRN is dependent on the PRN traffic load. The authors use a multi- dimensional Markov chain to model the CRN status under the condition of certain channels unused by the PRN. The authors can get the stationary distributions over all possible states of PRN and CRN. The Quality of Service (QoS) performance parameters for CRN, such as blocking probability, call dropping probability, and channel utilization can be derived from the obtained stationary distributions. Using it, the authors calculate the QoS performance parameters for multi-service cognitive radio network.

Abstract:
Unlike the other factors that have been invoked to account for mass extinctions, climate change is manifest to us all, whether we travel from the tropics to the poles or experience the seasonal cycle. Over a longer timescale, the issue of global warming in the recent past and likely future, and its probable consequences for other aspects of the environment, has occupied a considerable amount of media attention. Those people who are unaware of the likely consequences of the burning of fossil fuels cannot count themselves as well educated. Over a longer timescale, geologists have been aware for many decades of significant climatic changes on a global scale leading to the appearance and disappearance of polar ice caps on a number of occasions. Steve Stanley, the distinguished palaeobiologist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, has actively promoted the view that episodes of climatic cooling are the most likely cause of mass extinctions. However, we must consider also the significance of global warming, and for the continents, at any rate, the possible effects of changes in the humidity–aridity spectrum. Before examining the relationships between climatic change and mass extinctions we need to examine the criteria from the stratigraphic record that geologists use to determine ancient climates, or palaeo-climates. The most obvious way of detecting cold conditions in the past is to find evidence of the presence of ice. At the present day the sedimentary deposits associated with glaciers and ice sheets, which occur where melting ice dumps its rock load, range in grain size from boulders and pebbles to finely ground rock flour. Such deposits are known as boulder clay or till, and ancient examples consolidated into resistant rock as tillites. The surfaces of hard rock that have underlain substantial ice sheets bear characteristic linear striations indicating the former direction of ice movement, such as glaciers moving up or down a U-shaped valley. The striations are produced by pebbles embedded in the ice, and are a unique marker for glacial action. In the 1830s Louis Agassiz, the great Swiss naturalist, extrapolated from his knowledge of the margins of Alpine glaciers to propose that the whole of northern Europe had been covered by one or more ice sheets in the recent geological past.

Increasing freight car loads demand higher performance tapered roller bearings. As the stress state on railway bearing applications continues to increase, further advancement in the modeling tools and methods used for subsurface contact stress evaluations are needed. Heat treat specifications and contact geometries for railway bearings were originally developed for ideal load conditions. However, in railroad applications, tapered roller bearings are exposed to a vast range of load conditions that are seldom perfect. Moreover, when comparing global rail markets, there are often differences in b

In todays electricity market with a strong mix of renewables and traditional energy sources, heavy-duty gas turbines often have to operate at part load with decreased exhaust mass flow. Decreased mass flow leads to reduced Mach number and this factor drives the exhaust loss down. At the same time off-design conditions lead to reduction of diffuser pressure recovery, and this factor drives loss up. The latter is normally stronger, and therefore the losses at GT low load are higher than at base load. Traditionally exhaust diffusers were optimised for base load operation, and their characteristic

Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture with amine scrubbing at coal-fired power plants can remove 90% of the CO2 from flue gas, but operational energy requirements reduce net electrical output by 20–30%. Temporarily reducing the load on energy intensive components of the amine scrubbing process could temporarily increase power output and allow additional electricity sales when prices are high. Doing so could entail additional CO2 emissions, or amine solvent storage can be utilized to allow increased power output without additional CO2 emissions. Price-responsive flexible capture is studied for $0–200/tC

1.1 Macroeconomic summary Economic recovery has consistently outperformed the technical staff’s expectations following a steep decline in activity in the second quarter of 2020. At the same time, total and core inflation rates have fallen and remain at low levels, suggesting that a significant element of the reactivation of Colombia’s economy has been related to recovery in potential GDP. This would support the technical staff’s diagnosis of weak aggregate demand and ample excess capacity. The most recently available data on 2020 growth suggests a contraction in economic activity of 6.8%, lowe

The Colombian financial system has not suffered major structural disruptions during these months of deep economic contraction and has continued to carry out its basic functions as usual, thus facilitating the economy's response to extreme conditions. This is the result of the soundness of financial institutions at the beginning of the crisis, which was reflected in high liquidity and capital adequacy indicators as well as in the timely response of various authorities. Banco de la República lowered its policy interest rates 250 points to 1.75%, the lowest level since the creation of the new ind
