This thesis is concerned with the design of a high-speed backbone network which provides a high bandwidth interconnection for various Personal Computer Networks (PC-Networks) with an integrated service of voice and data. With the advanced technology of optical fiber as the transmission medium, several different existing topologies and protocols are discussed for the backbone network design. The token ring protocol is simulated and evaluated to find out a suitable buffer size and the length of voice and data packet for backbone network. The Network II.5 simulation tool is applied to simulate the token ring simulation model with different parameters. The Network Interface Unit (NIU) is designed from the simulation results with a cost-effective consideration.

Abstract:
This thesis presents the development and implementation of two fundamental communication sublayers, medium access and logical link, for a new Local Area Network (LAN) which utilizes the intra-building power distribution circuit as physical transmission medium. This medium provides a low cost means for data communications with a high degree of portability. A low-to-medium data rate and a relatively high error rate are two of the major disadvantages associated with the use of the medium. The Logical Link Control (LLC) protocol adopted is a modified version of the IEEE 802.2 protocol; whereas, the Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol used is a simple hub polling scheme. For efficiency reason, both LLC and MAC sublayers are implemented in the kernel of the UNIX¹ operating system. The schemes used, justifications for the decisions made and their implementations are discussed in details in the thesis. The performance of the power line LAN formed with four Sun workstations² using modems with a data rate of 14.4 kilo-bit per second is measured and analyzed. ¹UNIX is a trademark of AT & T Bell laboratories. ²Sun workstation is a trademark of Sun Microsystems.

Abstract:
STARNET is a fiber optic based network which facilitates the interconnection of distributed Local Area Networks. Configured as a sixteen pointed star topology with a multiprocessor based controller at the center of the star (named the Central Switch). STARNET is capable of scheduling calls from users connected to User Access Nodes located at the points of the star. Messages are passed from one node to another through the Central Switch via duplex fiber optic lines connecting each node to the center.
This paper presents a multiprocessor based design of the User Access Node. The hardware and software structure is examined in depth, providing solid guidelines for the physical construction of the unit. The performances of statistical STARNET models using parameters obtained from the design (and three different Central Switch models) are plotted and compared for five different examples of external traffic. The model analysis gives an indication of the expected message delays, supporting the feasibility of the design.

Abstract:
The description of a Network Management Package (NMP) for Packet Communications Units (PCUs) in a Local Area Network (LAN) is presented. The LAN consists of a Sytek LocalNet 20, a Sytek System 2000, a Sytek System 6000, and a Concord Data Systems Token/Net. The NMP accesses and controls the local and remote PCUs on the networks. The communication interface software module is responsible for opening and closing the session between the PC and PCU ports. The NMP supports a set of operations used by a network manager to control and manage the network PCUs. The user uses the NMP to integrate each PCU and check and set its attributes. The NMP was developed to run in the Computer Engineering Research Laboratory and in the University of Arizona broadband cable plant. The NMP allows different PCUs (local or remote) to check and modify PCU's attributes while users work on their own PCUs. (Abstract shortened with permission of author.)

Abstract:
In this thesis, the design and performance issues of a protocol for a dynamic hierarchical local area network are addressed. The dynamic hierarchy is an extension of the static hierarchical topology with the exception that the apex node can vary among a prescribed set of candidates. A simulation model is used to evaluate the benefits of dynamic apex transition under the proposed protocol. The design also considers routing and queue structures of the nodal functions corresponding to the transport/network layers of the ISO model. The model experimentation shows that dynamic hierarchy networks are advantageous, under an environment where different network traffic patterns exist at different points of time, over static hierarchy networks. Critical to the conclusion is that the amount of time taken to effect a transition is kept minimal.

Abstract:
This dissertation is concerned with the design of a high speed fiber optic campus backbone network which not only provides a high bandwidth connection to various LANs, PBXs, ISDNs, supercomputers, and other high speed computing facilities but also offers an integrated service of voice and data. The campus backbone network is based on an optical fiber dual ring structure. A new token ring protocol based on the IEEE 802.5 standard is proposed as the medium access protocol for the backbone network. In the proposed token ring network, the token holder transmits packets in an exhaustive way when no other nodes want to transmit voice packets. If any node has voice packets waiting for transmission, the token holder can transmit only a single packet during its access opportunity. In this way, not only can the voice delay be bounded at high voice traffic intensities, but a high data throughput can be achieved at low voice traffic intensities. The potential use of Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) was also considered, but the TDM technique was found to be less suitable for our campus environment mainly due to its low efficiency in bursty environments and complex hardware requirements. The backbone network was simulated using the Simscript II.5 discrete event simulation language. The simulation results indicated that the proposed token ring protocol provides satisfactory performances in every respect. A network interface unit (NIU) was designed, which consists of optical transmitter, receiver, and fault tolerance mechanisms as well as the protocol engine. The optimal values of major parameters for the NIU design were determined by the simulation.

Abstract:
This thesis presents the development and implementation of a token bus protocol for a Power Line Local Area Network (PLLAN) which utilizes intra-building power distribution circuit as the physical transmission medium. This medium provides a low cost means for data communications with a high degree of portability. Due to the characteristics of the power line and the prototype modem, the network would be easily saturated with data and would have a high collision probabilities. The IEEE 802.4 token bus standard is modified to fit the PLLAN and to bring its performance up. A comparative performance of the original protocol and the modified version shows that the latter provides an improvement in network throughput of up to 15 percent and a reduction in the network join-ring delay of up to 20 percent for a wide workload range. The performance figures of the modified version in a power line network of three SUN 3/50 workstations¹ transmitting at 9.6 kilo-bit per second is also presented and analyzed. ¹Sun workstation is a trademark of Sun Microsystems.

Abstract:
The IEEE802.11 standard for wireless networks includes a Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) protocol, which is a popular wireless secure communication stream cipher protocol approach to network security used to protect link-layer communications from eavesdropping and other attacks. It allows user to communicate with the user; sharing the public key over a network. It provides authentication and encrypted communications over unsecured channels. However, WEP protocol has an inherent security flaw. It is vulnerable to the various attacks, various experiments has proved that WEP fails to achieve its security goals. This thesis entails designing, evaluating and prototyping a wireless security infrastructure that can be used with the WEP protocol optionally, thus reducing the security vulnerabilities. We have studied the flaws of WEP and the reasons for their occurrence, and we provide the design and implementation of a novel scheme in Matlab and VHDL to improve the security of WEP in all aspects by a degree of 1000. The architecture was designed with a consideration for least increment in hardware, thus achieving power and cost efficiency. It also provides flexibility for optional implementation with the available technology by being able to be bypassed by the technology, which allows for non-replacement of existing hardware, common on both, the WEP and the proposed protocols, on the fly.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The way in which people consume video is changing with the adoption of new technologies such as tablet computers and smart televisions. These new technologies, along with the Internet, are moving video distribution away from satellite and terrestrial broadcast to distribution over the Internet. Services online now offer the same content that originally was only available on satellite broadcast television. However, these services are only viable in countries with high speed, inexpensive Internet bandwidth. The need therefore exists for alternative services to deliver content in countries where bandwidth is still expensive and slow. These include many of the developing nations of Africa. In this thesis we design and develop a video distribution platform that relies on peer-to-peer networking to deliver high quality video content. We use an existing video streaming peer-to-peer protocol as the primary distribution mechanism, but allow users to share video over other protocols and services. These can include BitTorrent, DC++ and users sharing hard drives with one another. In order to protect the video content, we design and implement a security scheme that prevents users from pirating video content, while allowing easy distribution of video data. The core of the security scheme requires a low bandwidth Internet connection to a server that streams keys to unlock the video content. The project also includes the development of a custom video player application to integrate with the security scheme. The platform is not limited to, but is aimed at high speed local area networks where bandwidth is free. In order for the platform to support feasible business models, we provision additional services, such as video cataloging and search, video usage monitoring and platform administration. The thesis includes a literature study on techniques and solutions to secure video entertainment, specifically in a peer-to-peer environment.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die wyse waarvolgens mense video verbruik is aan die verander met die ingebruikneming van nuwe tegnologie soos tabletrekenaars en slim televisiestelle. Hierdie nuwe tegnologie tesame met die Internet maak dat die verspreiding van video al hoe minder plaasvind deur middel van satellietuitsendings en al hoe meer versprei word deur die Internet. Aanlyn-Internetdienste bied deesdae dieselfde inhoud aan as wat voorheen slegs deur beeldsending versprei is. Hierdie dienste is egter slegs lewensvatbaar in lande met hoëspoed- en goedkoop Internetbandwydte. Daar is dus ’n behoefte aan alternatiewe tot hierdie dienste in lande waar bandwydte steeds duur en stadig is. Baie lande in Afrika kan in hierdie kategorie ingesluit word. In hierdie tesis word ’n videoverspreidingsplatform ontwerp en ontwikkel, wat van portuurnetwerke gebruik maak om hoëkwaliteit-beeldmateriaal te versprei. Die stelsel gebruik ’n bestaande portuurnetwerk-datavloeiprotokol as die premêre verspreidingsmeganisme, maar laat gebruikers ook toe om videoinhoud direk met ander gebruikers en dienste te deel. Die kern van die sekuriteitstelsel benodig ’n lae-bandwydte-Internetverbinding na ’n bediener wat sleutels uitsaai om die videoinhoud te ontsluit. Alhoewel nie daartoe beperk nie, is die platform gemik op hoëspoed-plaaslikegebiedsnetwerke met gratis bandwydte. Om die platvorm aan ’n haalbare sakemodel te laat voldoen het ons vir addisionele dienste soos videokatalogisering met soekfunksies, videoverbruikersmonitering en platvormadministrasie voorsiening gemaak. Die tesis sluit ’n literatuurstudie oor tegnieke en oplossings vir die beskerming van video data, spesifiek in die portuurnetwerke omgeving, in.

Abstract:
This study investigated the appropriate methods for incorporating collaborative activities supported by wireless local area networks in the middle school classroom environment. The project addressed the problem that although current educational practice indicates the value of incorporating collaborative learning in the middle school classroom, the physical setting, lack of training, and a narrow scope of vision tend to block that incorporation in many schools. The goal of this project was to develop and evaluate a process model that can be utilized to facilitate the collaborative learning process through the incorporation of wireless LAN's in a middle school environment. Criteria that are necessary for a successful product were established and matrices based on the established criteria were developed. An eight-member Formative Committee was assembled to establish a criteria set for the process model. The committee consists of seven educators from the Emanuel County School System, plus one representative from the system-wide technological support staff. The Formative Committee examined current practices and methodologies associated with collaborative learning in the classroom. This committee also investigated methods in which collaborative activities can be enhanced through the utilization of wireless networks. An Expert Committee was responsible for validating the criteria established by the Formative Committee. This four member Expert Panel was selected from teacher educators in local colleges and universities based on teaching experience, expertise in collaborative learning, expertise incorporating computers in the classroom, and expertise developing educational support materials. The validation was accomplished utilizing surveys and formative feedback based on criteria recommended by the Formative Committee. Current collaborative activities were examined and guidelines were developed that meet the requirements of the validated criteria. A pilot study was conducted in order to aid in the developmental process. An eighth grade music appreciation course was utilized in the pilot study. This class utilized computers connected via a wireless network and the process model that was developed based on the established criteria, to support the collaborative activities. A Development Committee examined the results from the pilot study. This committee was composed of three members from the Formative Committee and three members from the Expert Panel. Data gathered from the Development Committee and the pilot study was incorporated into the process model. After recommendations from the Development Committee were examined and integrated into the product, a Summative Committee was developed in order to evaluate the process model. This committee presented recommendations for future modifications as well as future areas of research.

Abstract:
The Named Data Networking (NDN) is a new Internet architecture that changes the network semantic from packet delivery to content retrieval and promises benefits in areas such as content distribution, security, mobility support, and application development. While the basic NDN architecture applies to any network environment, local area networks (LANs) are of particular interest because of their prevalence on the Internet and the relatively low barrier to deployment. In this dissertation, I design NDN protocols and implement NDN software, to make NDN communication in LAN robust and efficient. My contributions include: (a) a forwarding behavior specification required on every NDN node; (b) a secure and efficient self-learning strategy for switched Ethernet, which discovers available contents via occasional flooding, so that the network can operate without manual configuration, and does not require a routing protocol or a centralized controller; (c) NDN-NIC, a network interface card that performs name-based packet filtering, to reduce CPU overhead and power consumption of the main system during broadcast communication on shared media; (d) the NDN Link Protocol (NDNLP), which allows the forwarding plane to add hop-by-hop headers, and provides a fragmentation-reassembly feature so that large NDN packets can be sent directly over Ethernet with limited MTU.

Abstract:
This thesis will present a new topology independent network architecture for highly fault tolerant, mesh interconnected Local Area Networks(LAN). This architecture was developed within the IEEE 802 Local Computer Reference Model framework and a LAN utilising this architecture will act as a direct replacement for the Media Access Control (MAC) and Physical (PHY) layers of that reference model. The only current MAC protocol that provides a high level of fault tolerance and topological independence is the flooding protocol. The problems with this protocol are highlighted and as a result, a new protocol that combines redundant routing with learning automata techniques has been developed. The learning automata provide the protocol with the capability to detect and adapt to changes in the network connectivity while redundant routing is utilised to cope with the immediate effects of failures. Detailed analysis of the performance of the new learning automata protocol is given. The steady state or long term performance analysis has shown that this protocol offers considerable improvement when compared to the flooding protocol and the protocol's non-learning equivalent. The learning automata protocol is capable of combining the advantages of the other protocols whilst minimising their disadvantages. When considering the performance of the learning automata protocol under failure conditions, the advantages of its learning capability are clear. Even under high numbers of failures, the protocol is capable of adapting promptly to the resulting changes in network connectivity and is able to optimise the use of the remaining communications capacity.

This is a study of the simulated performance of two local area networks, Ethernet and the MAP network, respectively based on the IEEE standards 802.3 and 802.4. The simulation language chosen is of the discrete event type rather than the more usual analytical model. This is done in order to observe the interaction between the various entities of a network in order to gain a better understanding of the method of operation of such a system. The performance demanded of a node entity by the networks is determined. The performance of some commercially available hardware is derived from manufacturer's specifications and compared with that required by the network. It is found that there is a significant disparity, with the network requirements far exceeding that of the hardware capabilities. The simulation models developed are used to determine the performance of the networks both with and without the limitations imposed by currently available hardware. While the inclusion of the hardware performance causes little ·loss in performance for the Ethernet network, it has a highly detrimental effect on that of the MAP network. A possible solution is found to this limitation which requires minimal change to the existing protocol. The conclusions reached are that with currently available hardware a group of nodes are able to fully utilise the performance of the Ethernet LAN although a single pair of nodes is unable to do so. With regard to the MAP network, the network performance is limited by that of the node performance although this can be offset to a certain extent by careful choice of one of the protocol parameters, or modification of the hardware design.

This thesis describes the design, implementation, and performance evaluation of a communications software architecture designed in the first place for the construction of distributed computing systems based on high bandwidth local area networks, typified by the Cambridge Ring and Ethernet. This architecture consists of protocols and program interfaces, within the communication software and to the network, intended to support conveniently the development of a wide variety of distributed applications. However the architecture has been designed so as to allow its use also over multiple and varied data communication facilities, including wide area networks. The differences between this architecture and that conventionally found in wide area networks are discussed; reliability and performance issues concerning adequate structuring of the communication software suitable for local networks as well as wide area networks are examined. The implementation of this architecture developed for a local area network is evaluated, and its use on a wide area network is discussed.

Unidirectional broadcast structures constitute a class of high performance local network architectures. They are very flexible and well suited for fiber optic implementation. The access methods used in these networks are often based on certain implicit token-passing mechanisms to provide superior delay-vs-throughput characteristics. The performance of these unidirectional broadcast protocols is evaluated in this thesis via a study on the classical token-ring system. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of mean delay-vs-throughput performance for the gated exhaustive service discipline under asymmetric traffic. The analysis involves examination of the statistical behaviour of interacting queues. A number of exact results are derived and based on these results, a very good approximation for the average delays is developed. The approximation agrees closely with exact numerical solutions over a wide range of system parameters. The implications of the approximation are also discussed.
