Abstract:
For migrating animals, realized migration routes and timing emerge from hundreds or thousands of movement decisions made along migration routes. Local weather conditions along migration routes continually influence these decisions, and even relatively small changes in en route weather may cumulatively result in major shifts in migration patterns. Here, we analysed satellite tracking data to score a discrete navigation decision by a large migratory bird as it navigated a high-latitude, 5000 m elevation mountain range to understand how those navigational decisions changed under different weather

Here, we elucidate the spatial role of local Ca2+signals in directed cell migration through combinatorial application of an optogenetic toolkit. Abstract:
This article addresses the global migration of sports labor. The contested presence of North American players in English basketball, first documented by Maguire (1988), is considered in the context of questions regarding the reception of migrants in local cultures. A 2-year ethnographic project incorporating participant observations, interviews, and focus groups investigated fans’ consumption of local basketball. Complex and nuanced interpretations of migrant players were evident. These were informed by local identities and civic pride, cultural stereotypes, and local experiences of spectating

Abstract:
This paper takes the notion of a “migration-centred worldview” as a starting point to outline (a) how the concept of migration emerged in archaeological discourses over the 18th-20th century, (b) where we find ourselves in this discourse at the start of the 21st century, and (c) how we might course-correct to adopt realistic models of migration in historical and archaeological narratives. I argue that such realistic models of migration require adjusting ongoing assumptions about culture and ethnicity, which include ideas of cultures as “bounded units” on landscapes, and also, on a deeper level

This article summarises a review of geographical studies on migration published in Poland after 1989, as also included in the Report of the Polish Academy of Sciences’ Migration Research Committee (Komitet Badań nad Migracjami) (Horolets et al., 2018). The work identifies around 750 bibliographical items from the years 1990‑2017, which it proves possible to assign to the categories of: the theory and methodology of geographical research into migration (including modelling and forecasting), internal migrations, external migrations (emigration and immigration), studies concerning foreign territo

Abstract:
The migration-city-nexus has become central in migration and urban studies alike. This ‘local turn’ has not only initiated a rethinking of the local level as an independent level of migration policy-making but also broadened the discourse on how migration processes actually change cities. Therefore, the thematic issue at hand seeks to understand how migration-led development processes in cities promote and shape institutional change, and which actors transform policies, structures, and discourses on migration in different settings. It questions how migration-related issues in urban development

Virtual machine migration is an effective method to improve the resource utilization of cloud data center. The common migration methods use heuristic algorithms to allocation virtual machines, the solution results is easy to fall into local optimal solution. Therefore, an algorithm called Migrating algorithm based on Genetic Algorithm (MGA) is introduced in this paper, which roots from genetic evolution theory to achieve global optimal search in the map of virtual machines to target nodes, and improves the objective function of Genetic Algorithm by setting the resource utilization of virtual m

Directed cell migration arises from cells following a microenvironmental gradient (e.g. of a chemokine) or polarizing feature (e.g. a linear structure). However cells not only follow, but in many cases, also generate directionality cues by modifying their microenvironment. This bi-directional relationship is seen in the alignment of extracellular matrix (ECM) fibers ahead of invading cell masses. The forces generated by many migrating cells cause fiber alignment, which in turn promotes further migration in the direction of fiber alignment via contact guidance and durotaxis. Many zooplankton and fishes vertically migrate on a diel cycle to avoid predation, moving from their daytime residence in darker, deep waters to prey-rich surface waters to feed at dusk and returning to depth before dawn. Vertical migrations also occur in response to other processes that modify local light intensity, such as storms, eclipses, and full moons. We observed rapid, high-frequency migrations, spanning up to 60 m, of a diel vertically migrating acoustic scattering layer with a daytime depth of 300 m in the subpolar Northeastern Pacific Ocean. The depth of the layer was significantly
