Abstract:
Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics and Surveillance Systems in Akron, Ohio, had shipped Sweden’s Air Force two full mission simulators as well as five multi-mission simulators by the end of 1999. A change of the simulator’s database for precision rather than speed and for tissue manipulation instead of aircraft tactics resulted in the development of Lockheed Martin’s endoscopic sinus surgery simulator. The virtual terrain thus became smaller—the human sinus instead of Northern Europe. Using an endoscopic sinus surgery simulator, doctors can practice a variety of complex nasal procedures and reduce the risk to patients. Using simulation technology originally designed for military applications, the simulator features a dummy named Martin and can simulate a broad range of situations, including the effects of medication on a patient. The simulator is designed to train nasal surgeons and ear, nose, and throat residents to evaluate new techniques, handle instruments more efficiently, and familiarize themselves with anatomy.

Over the course several years - from late in the 1950s to the early 1970s - Lockheed was embroiled in the Deal of the Century where the company was found guilty of bribing foreign countries governments to select the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter over arguably better alternatives in addressing those nations respective air force needs. Today, Lockheed Martin is the leading contractor on the F-35 Lightning II project, which is intended to produce the worlds most advanced stealth strike-fighter for US armed forces and those of several allied foreign nations. However, the F-35 program has become the single most expensive project in American history and has been beset with serious technical problems, major schedule delays, cost overruns, and the F-35s performance capabilities are seen by many as inferior to the nations potential adversaries fighter aircraft, if not inferior to the aircraft it is intended to replace.

After the 9/11 attack, the US invasion of Afghanistan and later the invasion of Iraq, not only changed the dynamics of global politics but also impacted the US defence industry by reaching a new height. This paper analyzes factors that are impacting the financial performance of Lockheed Martin which is measured via Earnings per share (EPS). After analyzing the data of Lockheed Martin for 20 years using Multivariate regression analysis, results indicate that The Defence budget of Iraq and Goodwill hurts EPS. On the other hand, retained earnings and Total debt positively impact the EPS. The company must focus more on its research & development to keep itself ahead of its competitor. The study suggests that Lockheed Martin should focus on obtaining contracts from various countries, especially those who are the major importers of defence equipment, which will help them in enhancing their performance positively.

An early telemedicine project involving NASA, the Papago Tribe (now the Tohono O'odham Indian Nation), the Lockheed Missile and Space Company, the Indian Health Service and the Department of Health, Education and Welfare explored the possibilities of using technology to provide improved health care to a remote population in southern Arizona. The project, called STARPAHC (Space Technology Applied to Rural Papago Advanced Health Care), took place in the 1970s and demonstrated the feasibility of a consortium of public and private partners working together to provide medical care to remote populations via telecommunication. In 2001 the Arizona Health Sciences Library acquired important archival materials documenting the STARPAHC project and in collaboration with the Arizona Telemedicine Program established the Arizona Archive of Telemedicine. The material is likely to interest those studying early attempts to use technology to deliver health care at a distance, as well as those studying the sociological ramifications of technical and scientific projects among indigenous populations.

Abstract:
This article reviews the advanced resin transfer molding (RTM) process of GKN Westland Aerospace. This process is refined enough, with customized equipment and a proprietary resin binding material, so that hundreds of different aircraft parts that would otherwise be heavier (made of titanium) are being produced for customers that include GE, Pratt & Whitney, Lockheed Martin, and Boeing. GKN is making five-axis, hollow vein, and integrated attachment nodes. It has produced carbon-fiber and resin components as thick as 3½ inches, and designs can combine what were many parts. Depending on the part and desired strength (in the desired directions), the fiber tow is woven in a variety of ways. For strength in mainly one direction, the engineers specify that 75 percent of the tow runs in one direction and just 25 percent of it is used to weave across it, for example. The next step in GKN’s advanced RTM evolution is a unihybrid composite that takes great loads in just one direction and can be made very thick, up to 3½ inches. A slightly less rigorous process has already been licensed, to a company in Mexico that produces a component for the Dodge Viper sports car.

Abstract:
Lockheed's Research Laboratory was established in 1956 to support the recently founded Lockheed Missiles and Space Division. The earliest products of the division were a new generation of submarine-launched ballistic missile—Polaris and the Agena spacecraft. It was immediately recognized that both required advances in materials technology and the Materials Sciences Directorate was established in the research laboratory to address those needs. Today, materials researchers are conducting investigations in a wide range of topics in metallurgy, chemistry, structures, and nondestructive test/evaluation.The laboratory has a particularly strong capability in performance analysis and problem identification/resolution for solid rocket propulsion systems. Current work on the Trident II continues the laboratory's contributions to the Polaris, Poseidon, and Trident I missiles. Efforts are also focused on materials for other aerospace applications, such as advanced aircraft, the NASA Space Station (Freedom), and the Strategie Defense Initiative.Examples of materials sciences achievements include the development of the space shuttle's heat shield tiles, the first use of lithium as an anode in batteries, a real-time x-ray inspection system for large rocket motors, and coated and uncoated refractory metal hot gas manifolds for ballistic missile propulsion. The organization has a staff of about 170 professionals.

Subject area Emiratisation, dual bottom-line, destination policy making and strategic development, ecosystem perspective and human capital. Study level/applicability This case is suitable for undergraduate and postgraduate students studying policy; strategy and human resources. Practitioners from the human resource industry, government sector and destination marketing may also benefit from the case. Case overview ATIC is an investment company with a dual bottom line mandate. This means besides the financial objective it has for its investors (which is largely the Government of Abu Dhabi), it must contribute to socio-economic objectives outlined by the Abu Dhabi Vision 2030. For this perspective, ATIC had developed a unique approach looking at the “Ecosystem” perspective. Some key areas are destination development as an advanced technology hub and human capital development or “Emiratisation”. All these are key to long-term success of the country as the Middle East North Africa region has one of the youngest populations and an increasing unemployment rate. Most government organizations are saturated and it is vital that nationals start working and performing in the private sector. This case outlines the plans and efforts of ATIC towards those goals. Expected learning outcomes Management of “Emiratisation” at policy and implementation; scenario planning and strategy management especially looking at advanced technology sector; organizational values – development and implementation at recruitment and marketing; destination marketing and policy looking at the case of Abu Dhabi, stakeholder management. Abstract:
The aircraft maintenance industry is a complex system consisting of several interrelated human and machine components. The linchpin of this system, however, is the human. Recognizing this, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has pursued human factors related research. In the maintenance arena the research has focused on the aircraft inspection process and the aircraft inspector. Training has been identified as the primary intervention strategy to improve the quality and reliability of aircraft inspection. In response to this need, the paper outlines the development of a high fidelity inspection training simulator (ASSIST: Automated System of Self Instruction for Specialized Training) focused on improving aircraft inspection performance and ultimately aviation safety. The research was funded by the Federal Aviation Administration and conducted by the Advanced Training Systems Laboratory of the Department of Industrial Engineering, Clemson University and was conducted in cooperation with Delta Airlines and Lockheed Martin Aircraft Center.

Abstract:
Packaging a high power radio frequency integrated circuit (RFIC) in low temperature cofired ceramic (LTCC) presents many challenges. Within the constraints of LTCC fabrication, the design must provide the usual electrical isolation and interconnections required to package the IC, with additional consideration given to RF isolation and the structural integrity issues. While iterative design and prototyping is an option for RFIC packaging development, it is a tedious and expensive process that would most likely be unsuccessful due to the complexity of the problem. To facilitate package design and optimization, thermo-mechanical assembly simulations were used to identify and manage the critical process parameters to control solder failures in the LTCC package assembly. The modeling results were confirmed through comparisons to prototype testing. This paper summarizes an assembly-based modeling approach to RFIC package design and solder failure analysis, and presents some results and key findings to date. The Advanced Materials Institute (AMI) is the materials research arm of the Colorado Advanced Technology Institute (CATI), a state agency created in 1983 by the state General Assembly as an economic development initiative involving academic, industry, and government sectors. AMI represents a unique process in academic research: long-term materials needs of industry members are addressed by university investigators, with federal agencies providing the major source of funding.AMI is a consortium of four research universities (Colorado School of Mines as the lead institution, Colorado State University, and the Universities of Colorado and Denver) and a present industrial membership of nine corporations (AMAX Inc., Adolph Coors Company, Digital Equipment Corporation, Gates Company, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Manville, Martin Marietta, and Telectronics). The Institute is governed by a Board of Directors with representatives from each participating organization. Sustaining memberships, which do not include representation on the Board, are available; memberships of both kinds are open to non-Colorado-based companies. The long-term materials needs of industry members provide AMI's research agenda; many items, once identified, become company-shared interests. Requests for proposals, based on the agenda, are distributed to the affiliated universities for competitive awarding of seed funds. Proposals receive peer review and the Board selects those to be funded.

Abstract:
The Garrett Turbine Engine Company/Ford Advanced Gas Turbine Program, designated AGT101, came to an end in June 1987. During this ceramic technology program, ceramic components were exposed to over 250 h of engine test. The 85-h test of the all-ceramic hot section to 1204C (2200F) was a significant accomplishment. However, this AGT101 test program also identified ceramic technology challenges that require continued development. These technology challenges are the basis for the five-year Advanced Turbine Technology Applications Project (ATTAP), which began in Aug. 1987. The objectives of this program include: (1) further development of analytical tools for ceramic component design utilizing the evolving ceramic material properties data base; (2) establishment of improved processes for fabricating advanced ceramic components; (3) development of improved procedures for testing ceramic components and test verification of design methods; and (4) evaluation of ceramic component reliability and durability in an engine environment. These activities are necessary to demonstrate that structural ceramic technology has the potential for competitive automotive engine life cycle cost and life.

Abstract:
Strategic management determines the direction of a company for several years ahead. Managers and business owners who create strategies must anticipate and be able to see systemically. Logistics is a fundamental process in the industrial field, and despite the constant emphasis on importance, companies encounter problems in this area. A prerequisite for properly functioning logistics for companies operating in the industrial sector is an appropriately chosen logistics strategy, which is the subject of this work. The first part summarizes the theoretical basis for strategy and logistics, current trends, and influencing logistics processes. The second chapter analyzes the current state of logistics strategy development and summarizes its problem areas at the same time. The focal part of the contribution is the innovative proposal of the methodology for developing the logistics strategy in the industrial area through a progressive approach. The methodology is partially verified. The proposed methodology offers companies the opportunity to evaluate the current state of the logistics system correctly, select the correct elements of the external and internal environment affecting logistics processes, define goals and limitations, choose the right indicators that will enable the evaluation of the implemented strategy, formulate a strategy that will reflect the requirements of the company and include new technologies, correctly create the framework of the strategy implementation project, and, finally, visualize and evaluate the selected indicators during and after the implementation of the strategy. Among the created variants of the logistics strategy is the introduction of elements that will lead to the gradual development of the Industry 4.0 trend in a company.

Abstract:
Personnel training is one of the key conditions for the successful functioning of any organization. This has become especially important in the modern world, when an increase in the pace of development of scientific and technological progress greatly accelerates the process of obsolescence of professional knowledge and skills. The contradiction of the qualifications of employees to the needs of the company is negatively manifested in the results of its activities. The growing sense of vocational training for the organization and a noticeable increase in the need for it over the past forty years have shown that the first companies in the market have taken up the improvement of the skills of their employees. Preparation of the implementation of vocational training has become the leading direction of personnel management, and the cost of it is the highest (after wages) in the list of expenses of many companies. Professional development is the process of equipping an employee with the knowledge to perform assigned tasks, new production functions, to obtain new positions, without the difficult solution of new tasks. In huge multinational corporations there are special professional development departments, managed by a manager with the rank of director or vice president, which emphasizes their great importance to the company. The need for professional development for current organizations is also described by the fact that the motives in this border are drawn up into personal plans (from the implementation of which the employee’s earnings are proportionally calculated) by the heads of most corporations: presidents, regional vicepresidents, directors of national companies

The article presents the need for franchising in the activities of modern enterprises and companies. The main directions of franchising application and dynamics of its development are determined. The change in the structure of the franchise market in Ukraine in terms of industries is demonstrated. Examples of some companies that use franchising to organize the system of sales of their products are given, namely such domestic producers who work under the brands "Gregory Amber", "ANDRE TAN" and the American Coca Cola, which uses industrial franchising and is a world market leader in soft drinks. The article contains the main numerical indicators of the effectiveness of the company "Coca-Сola Company" for 2019-2020, sales of various beverages for 2018-20, including the expansion not only of exports of goods, but also of exports of capital, when enterprises, plants and factories are established abroad. The main advantages of using franchising in modern business conditions are emphasizedThe authors testify that franchising is becoming more and more popular among enterprises, as: 1) the entrepreneur does not bear the costs of advertising and renting; after all, if we consider the traditional type of business, then at the initial stage it is one of the most important and capital-intensive investments; 2) favorable terms of cooperation: soft loans, insurance, because many people prefer to do business with well-advanced and recognizable brands, moreover, banks are more willing to agree to work with the franchisee than with a novice entrepreneur; initial assistance in opening and ongoing support of the company in conducting and developing business, providing complete information on business schemes of enterprises and instructions on effective business conduct. It is stated that there are many arguments in favor of starting production on the franchise system. The partner receives not only a positive reputation, but also step-by-step business management, including advertising and marketing tools, ready-made documentation, and favorable conditions for the supply of equipment and raw materials, well-established logistics. The franchisee is equipped with ready-made sales channels; it is possible to combine production and retail. The franchisor is interested and obliged to provide scheduled and regular consultations on production processes and organization of sales of finished products. It is noted that despite the disadvantages and difficulties associated with franchising, it is one of the most effective tools for business development.

The traditional approaches to investment appraisal are examined and it is shown that these exhibit severe limitations when applied to advanced manufacturing technology (AMT). In particular, the financial advantages of AMT are usually understated, with the result that companies fail to invest in highly viable projects. The paper then demonstrates how investment appraisal can be correctly performed by use of an integrated suite of programs, and that when the company-wide benefits of AMT are embraced within the DCF evaluation, AMT emerges as being cost effective. The advantages of using the programs are illustrated by examples from each facet of AMT (for example, robotics, CNC, FMS, CAD/CAM and MRP) with conclusions being derived showing how the traditional objective of reductions in direct costs changes when the investment is viewed company-wide. Finally, it is shown how this change in perspective, in turn, induces a re-appraisal of the direction that AMT development should take if its full potential is to be realized.

Abstract The Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) occupies about 2,850 acres and is located in Ventura County, California. The site is jointly owned by the Boeing Company and the federal government (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration administers the federal portion of the property). Much of the site was historically used as a rocket engine testing and energy research facility from 1949 to 1998. The site stormwater discharges are permitted by the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board through an individual industrial NPDES permit that includes numeric effluent limits for a wide range of constituents, including dioxins and metals. A large portion of the site uses distributed source stormwater controls with natural treatment systems utilizing chemically active media. As part of this approach, extensive research was conducted to develop a robust media for use in these controls to meet the discharge objectives. This paper describes the development of the media and its characteristics.

Subject area International management strategy. Study level/applicability Graduate and upper undergraduate classes. Case overview This case deals with an information technology (IT) outsourcing company based in Egypt which has ventured into the international market right from the start without establishing itself first in the local market. Its record of success was due largely to a group of young Egyptian entrepreneurs with an international orientation. Their strongly held values were translated into an organizational culture that was manifested in the company's relationships with its clients, whether multinational companies or regional governments. This mutual trust has generated work through referrals and has saved the company the need, at least initially, to adopt a proactive marketing strategy. In addition to culture the company's structure has shown considerable agility in dealing with the unexpected demands from clients through developing strong functional departments supported by numerous cross-functional teams. The case also presents the development of the human resource function which is considered the backbone of IT outsourcing companies. Expected learning outcomes Students are expected to learn the following: internationalization of business start ups in developing nations can take place even in the face of limitations of the local markets; the importance of leadership and culture in fostering trusting relationships with clients; the need to constantly reconfigure resources to meet challenges of competition and the needs of clients; the viability of a defensive strategy for newly established companies if supplemented by trusting relationships with clients; and the role of an evolving structure to fit the growth stages of the company. Abstract:
The subject of research. This article determines that in conditions of global transformational processes, the sphere of innovation activity becomes of particular importance in the economy of advanced countries. Its development provides socio-economic growth of local companies and a state, in general, requiring significant financial resources. Consequently, the subject of this study is the management of innovation activities at the enterprise with the achievement of maximum effectiveness, as well as the identification of interconnection between innovations and investments. Methodology. Conducted research shows, the condition of development of domestic technologies is unsatisfactory: Ukraine occupies the last place among European countries. Innovative activity is associated with investments, whose government support in our country is rather small in the context of the state’s GDP. Content analysis is carried out on materials of works of domestic and foreign scientists using information from Ukrainian legislation and statistical data provided by experts. In the process of preparing the paper, the following general scientific methods of research are used: logical analysis, observation, formalization, synthesis, abstraction. The purpose of a study is to analyse the nature of the innovation activity of companies, to establish its unbiased relationship with investment processes in order to identify areas for improving the innovation and investment situation in Ukraine. Important is to substantiate the expediency of improving the innovative management of Ukrainian enterprises in the focus of implementation of new projects by finding the necessary sources of financing. As a result – effective management of the company is capable of satisfying consumer demands and increase profits. Conclusions. Thus, the analysis of the relationship between innovations and investments has shown that the situation in Ukraine is characterized by a deficit of state support in the investment and innovation sector, and difficulties in attracting finance. The latter is directly related to the political situation, instability, the lack of clear legislative rules of direct action, as well as insignificant pay for the work of inventors. At the same time, the positive direction of innovation development in Ukraine is the tendency to increase venture companies (with the use of foreign experience), which directly provides investment in the latest local finds. Improving the investment and innovation situation in Ukraine is possible by creating a set of incentives for attracting investment, further investing in human capital, raising wages for researchers; growth of inflow of foreign investments; providing tangible state support to enterprises and more favourable lending conditions for them, etc. It is important to ensure transparency of legislation, to perfect the conditions of functioning of business space and the state of market infrastructure, to take measures to improve the state of the environment.

Cotton sanitary towels were functionalized by probiotic paste with incorporated Lactobacillus L. fermentum LN99, L. rhamnosus LN113, and L. gasseri LN40 in order to reduce the possibility of infection or inflammation during menstruation and to develop a friendlier product. These towels were characterized through elemental composition using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, determination of the pH of aqueous extract, water retention, capillary properties, determination of absorption capacity, and microbiological testing, to assess the antimicrobials’ function and stability of lactic bacteria paste as a coating for sanitary towels. The results of the used methods show that the physical–mechanical properties of towels functionalized by probiotic paste are not significantly different if compared to non-treated ones. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy set the successful functionalization of sanitary towels with probiotic paste due to the occurrence of typical probiotics paste peaks. The pH of the probiotic-functionalized sanitary towels was reduced in comparison to the reference material to an acidified region of pH = 5.6, which is an ideal environment for maintaining physiological pH. The decrease in water retention of towels after functionalization is relatively low (8.48 %). The sorption behavior of towels was worse by up to 15% regardless of the reference material, which is still acceptable from a practical point of view and internal standards of the included company Tosama d.o.o. The probiotic-functionalized sanitary towels absorb synthetic blood faster than the reference ones, due to compatibility of the paste with synthetic blood. Moreover, towels obtain functionalities such as good condition for lactobacilli growth with simultaneous pH adjusting, as well as introducing of Staphylococcus aureus reduction. Functionalization of sanitary towels with probiotic paste showed a commercial potential to reduce the probability of infection during the menstruation cycle, as well as being a more customer-friendly product.

Digital capability is an advanced capability that manufacturing companies need for their digital and intelligent development. At present, the influence mechanism behind the impact of digital capability on manufacturing companies’ performance is still unclear and lacks quantitative analysis. Based on the dynamic capability view, we propose a research model to investigate digital capability, digital innovation, value co-creation, and company performance and conduct an empirical study based on questionnaire data from 209 digital manufacturing companies. The empirical results show that digital capability has a significant positive impact on company performance. The results further show that digital innovation mediates the effect of digital capability on performance within a company, while outside the company, value co-creation mediates the impact of digital capability on company performance. This research provides empirical support in favor of companies developing digital capabilities in the context of digital transformation and offers theoretical insight into the contradiction between the potential value of digital capability and companies’ practice.

Abstract:
Abstract Automation and robotization (A&R) is often the main driving force behind the development of advanced manufacturing, including the transformation of the company towards the Industry 4.0 model. Effective implementation and effective use of A&R solutions is possible only if the company has good prepared and educated employees. It applies to all levels, from the direct operation of machines and processes, through mid-level technical staff, to the management level. Nowadays, education of young staff, as well as training of those currently employed, requires the implementation of new solutions and methods of Vocational Education and Training (VET). They should ensure not only a high professional level, but also meet the challenges facing VET today: attractiveness of education for students, especially young ones, universal accessibility regardless of the place of residence, internationalization. The paper, presenting results of the MILAN project, shows that addressing those problems can largely be facilitated by the use of modern, advanced ICT solutions.

In this paper the authors investigate the relationship of advanced information and communication technology (ICT) use and the environmental performance on the company level. Their presumption is that companies with advanced ICT can have better environmental performance as well. The level of ICT development is assessed by Pham’s model, while environmental performance is interpreted along with the model of Schultze and Trommer. The authors tested the models and the relationship of ICT and environmental performance by statistical analysis, using the database of Hungarian Competitiveness Research Centre. Regarding the results, there is a positive connection between high-level ICT use and environmental performance in many aspects. Since advanced ICT allows companies to gather and analyze data extensively, the monitoring of the environmental performance indicators and the intervention, continuous development can be more efficient. Environmental sustainability is not the privilege of large companies, middle size companies are also intensely dealing with this important issue.

Abstract:
It is acknowledged that quality of life is related to economic development in a country or region. The impact of the ongoing transfer to the digital economy on economic growth, sustainable development, and quality of life has been a recent academic focus, finding that the development of digitalisation of the economy and society is happening at a comparable pace. Yet, despite the availability of governmental support and overall strategic orientation of top managers, there is evidence of low digital/advanced manufacturing technologies adoption readiness across economic sectors. Therefore, the object of the research is the digital/advanced manufacturing technologies adoption readiness, which can be assessed on both industrial and organisational levels. The authors carried out an expert poll that has shown low digital/advanced manufacturing technologies adoption readiness on the industrial level (average readiness of 2.18 across estimated industries). For this reason, the focus subject of the research is the evaluation method for determining barriers of digital transformation on organisational level. The review of the academic literature and available digital maturity assessment models has shown the lack of metrics for barrier evaluation. The objective of the research is to develop a method for digital-transformation barrier evaluation. An analytical research method is used to develop a ready-to-use method in a form of a questionnaire that can be applied to measure an overall digital-transformation barrier level and identify problem areas for a manufacturing enterprise. The developed method is approbated in two large industrial companies. The overall barrier equals 39.3% for a power engineering company, which is a deterrent barrier. The overall barrier equals 75.0% for a machine-building company, which is a limiting barrier. The results of approbation correspond with results of the expert poll: the power engineering company has a lower barrier level, which is in line with the engine building and turbine engineering industry showing higher levels of readiness to adopt digital technologies. This finding supports the hypothesis about the rationality of the author’s method.

Abstract:
Researchers have studied entrepreneurial curiosity and innovativeness as determinants of entrepreneurial behavior but have not linked them with company growth in a model. The intention of this enquiry was to examine the associations between the entrepreneur’s psychological constructs of entrepreneurial curiosity and innovativeness and business growth, as examined by the conceptualization and analysis of hypotheses. For this research, data were obtained via a survey questionnaire. The sample consisted of 851 entrepreneurs of companies in three European countries. Each company had 250 workers or fewer. This study contributes to the entrepreneurship knowledge base by presenting empirical testimony on the associations between entrepreneurial curiosity, entrepreneurial innovativeness, and firm growth, as well as presenting advanced cross-nationally analogous measurement instruments of entrepreneurial curiosity and innovativeness. The entrepreneur’s curiosity is important for their innovativeness, and this innovativeness is essential for business growth.
