Abstract:
A concurrent program is one in which a number of processes are considered to be active simultaneously . It is possib l e to t hink of a process as being a separate sequential program executing independently of other processes, although perhaps communicating with them at desired pOints . The concurrent program, as a whole, can be executed in one of two ways: il ii) in true concurrent manner, wi th each process executing on a dedicated processor in a quasi - concurrent manner, where a processor's processes . time is multiplexed between single the There are two motivations for the study of concurrency in programming languages : i) concurrent programming facilities can be exploited in systems where one has more t han one processor . As technology i mproves, machines having multiple processors will proliferate ii) concurrent p r ogramming facilities may allow programs to be structured as independent , bu t co - operating, processes which can then be implemented on a single processor system . This structure may be more natural to the programmer then the traditional sequential structures. An example is provided by Conway's - 1- Clearly, languages Pascal) problem [Ben82] . by their very nature, traditional sequential- type (Fortran, Basic, Cobol and earlier versions of prove inadequate for the purposes of concurrent programming without considerable extension (which some manufacturers have provided, rendering their compilers non standard-conforming). The general convenience of high level languages provides strong motivation for their development for rea l time programming. Modula - 2 [Wir83] is but one of a number of such r ecently developed languages, designed not only to fulfil a "sequential" role but also to offer facilities for concurrent programming. Developed by Niklaus Wirth in 1979 as a successor to Pascal and Modula, it is intended to serve under the banner of a generalpurpose systems - implementation language. This thesis investigates concurrency i n Modula - 2 and takes the following form: i ) an analYSis of the concurrent facilities offered ii) problems and difficulties associated with these facilities iii) improveme nts and enhancements, including the feasibility of using Modula - 2 to simulate constructs found in other languages, such as the Hoare monitor [Hoa74] and the Ada rendezvous [Uni81]. - 2- Each section concludes with an appraisal of the work conducted in that section . The final section consists of a critical assessment of those Modula - 2 language constructs and facilities provided for the implementation of concurrency and a brief look at concurrency in Modula, Modula-2's predecessor. - Introduction.

Hackett, James Simpson. "An economic analysis of multiple use forestry using FORPLAN-Version 2." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29033.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines a mathematical programming model called FORPLAN as a planning tool for strategic analysis of forest management alternatives. This model uses economic efficiency as the objective of forest management planning. The dynamic theory of multiple use forestry is analyzed and expressed as a linear programming analogue in FORPLAN. The main weakness of this theory is that it focuses on single stand analysis. Even so, forest wide constraints applied to certain FORPLAN formulations compensate for this weakness. A strata-based forest management problem is developed to show the economic implications of four forest management alternatives: (1) timber production; (2) timber production subject to a non-declining yield limitation; (3) timber and black-tailed deer (Odocolieus hemionus columbianus) production; and (4) timber and black-tailed deer production, again including a non-declining yield of timber. Demand curves for two analysis areas and a supply curve for deer winter range are developed using parametric analysis. The ability of FORPLAN to address economic implications of current forest management policies is discussed. Economic analysis of forest management alternatives would play a useful role in forest planning in British Columbia. The need for such evaluation is underlined by the ever increasing number of resource conflicts caused by the dominance of the timber industry and the continually growing demand for other forest resources. Three conclusions are drawn from this study. First, FORPLAN has the technical capability to be an effective tool for analyzing strategic multiple use plans under economic efficiency criteria. It does not have the timber bias of earlier models and the capability of FORPLAN to integrate area and strata-based variables makes it a very powerful model. Second, parametric programming of FORPLAN solutions provides marginal analysis for inputs and outputs. Comparative examination of these curves and their elasticities provide information about the relative importance of different analysis areas. Lastly, managing for timber and hunting services for black-tailed deer by preserving old growth winter range is not an economically viable management option. The relative value of the timber is significantly greater than the hunting services for the deer that it is just not worth managing for both.

Mitchell, Andrew David. "Computer modeling of rock fall : improvement and calibration of the PIERRE 2 stochastic rock fall simulation program." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/53433.

Full text
Abstract:
Rock falls are a common hazard affecting people and infrastructure below natural cliffs and in man-made environments such as roads, railways, quarries and open pit mines. Computer models have become standard in assessing the hazards posed by rock falls, and there are a wide variety of models currently available. The main difference between these models is the way in which they represent the impact process. New models utilizing rigorous solutions for rigid body impacts have become more common, however, the complexity of these models makes them difficult to calibrate and difficult to apply in practice. The PIERRE 2 model, presented here, returns to a simplified lumped-mass model assuming collinear impact conditions. The natural variability of rock falls is represented using the following features: • The slope angle is varied by a stochastic roughness angle to approximate the effects of non-collinear impacts. • The conservation of momentum during an impact is determined using hyperbolic relationships so that high energy impacts will have greater losses than low energy impacts. • A stochastic shape factor is used to vary the sphere dimensions at impact to approximate the rotational effects of real, non-spherical boulders. Impact mechanics theory was used as the basis for these features; however their validity is demonstrated through 2D and 3D model calibration. The model was calibrated using data from experiments with detailed kinematic information on two natural slopes, Vaujany, France and Ehime, Japan, and excavated slopes at three Austrian quarries. The results from the calibrations were then applied to a natural slope, Tornado Mountain, and an excavated slope at Nicolum quarry, both in British Columbia. The results of this calibration and validation program showed the model can reproduce runout and kinematic behaviours of rocks based on relatively limited site characterization data. Select results were also compared to design guidelines. Using reliability engineering principles, the probability of the design parameters derived from the model being exceeded was found to be acceptably low. The model is also capable of reproducing observed relationships between impact incidence angle and the normal restitution coefficient reported by others.

Gunes, E. evren. "Computerized Test Procedure For Industrial Radiographic Examination Of Metallic Welded Joints." Master's thesis, METU, 2004. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/2/12605553/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Radiography is an extensively used NDT method, especially in nuclear, aerospace and automotive industries where optimal designs call for greater reliability. The rules corresponding to industrial radiography are defined in a system of radiographic standards. The standards related to the radiographic testing of metallic welded joints had been harmonised in all over the Europe and at the end in 1997, the standard "
EN 1435"
was established and published. Since then, this standard has become the most widely used standard where the radiographic applications are necessary. To eliminate the person based errors during application of the standard, moreover to save time, cost and effort in radiographic exposures, in this study it was aimed to write a computer program which is able to calculate all necessary parameters for a radiographic exposure related to this standard EN 1435. In the programming stage, Visual Basic 6.0 &
#61651
was used. The program consists of many windows, each giving and controlling separate parameters related to the exposure. Besides giving all the needed parameters, the evolved program is able to prepare a report with these parameters. So, both radiography technicians and experts can use it. It is believed that this study constructs a basis for developing other computerised test procedures for any kind of non-destructive testing methods used in industry today.

Abstract:
A data structure editor is presented for use in an integrated, fragment-based programming environment. This editor employs high resolution computer graphics to present the user with an iconic representation of the internal storage of a running program.
The editor allows the creation, modification, and deletion of data structures. These abilities allow the user to quickly sketch data structures with which to test incomplete program fragments, alleviating the need for driver routines.
To keep the user cognizant of events inside his program, a technique for automated display management is presented allowing the user to keep the most important objects in the viewport at all times. A history facility permits the user to see the former values of all variables.
Execution controls are provided allowing the user to control the scope and speed of execution, manipulate frames on the run-time stack, set breakpoints, and profile the executing algorithm.

This report will cover the work process behind creating a spectrum analyzer. The reader will be able to read about the chosen method but also the alternative methods. Apart from this the theoretical parts behind every moment will also be covered and compared to potential alternative solutions. The project has been carried out on behalf of KA Automation. The purpose of the project was to create a base for analyzing sound frequencies. The goal was to be able to identify sound properties in the form of frequencies in servo motors in for example water pumps. The idea was to be able to in a later development stage be able to identify when new frequencies have entered the audio profile which might result in the motor to be in need of service. The base is created with the help of C# and the sound library NAudio. From the result one can conclude that this program can analyze sound and display the magnitude of its frequency components and is therefore a suitable base for future development.

Abstract:
ANSYS Packaging Thermal/Mechanical Calculator (APTMC) is an interface program developed for use with ANSYS and specially designed to handle thermal and thermally induced stress modeling/simulation of Level 1 and Level 2 VLSI packaging structures and assemblies. APTMC is written in PASCAL and operates in an interactive I/O format mode. This user-friendly tool leads an analyst/designer through the process of creating appropriate thermal and thermally induced stress models and other operations necessary to run ANSYS. It includes such steps as the following: (1) construction of ANSYS commands through the string process; (2) creation of a dynamic data structure which expands and contracts during program execution based on the data storage requirements of the program sets to control model generation; (3) access of material data and model parameters from the developed INTERNAL DATABANK which contains: (a) material data list; (b) heat transfer modes; and (c) library of structures; (4) forming ANSYS PREP7 and POSTn command files. Abstract:
A study of the extraction of cobalt II ions from an aqueous growing drop into a continuous medium of di-2-ethylhexylphosphoric acid (D2EHPA) is made. The apparatus for this technique is described and a flow injection analysis method for measuring the cobalt remaining in the aqueous phase has been developed. In this study the feed concentration of cobalt has varied between 8.48 x 10-3 and 16.97 x 10-3 mole 9-1. The D2EHPA held in n-heptane, has been altered between 0.143 and 2.41 mole P. Also, pH has been adjusted between 3.10 and 4.44. The principal temperature applied to this study was 25 ±0.5*C. Acetate buffers have been used, but it is shown by calculation that about 70% of the cobaltous ion is in an uncomplexed form. The kinetics of the extraction have been modelled using a method based upon reaction in an aqueous zone near to the liquid-liquid interface with diffusion of species towards and away from the interface. This model provided a fundamental parameter 01 which incorporates the chemical rate constant kR, the D2EHPA partition coefficient PHR, the acid dissociation constnat KD for D2EHPA and the metal ion diffusivity in the interface diffusion region. The results have been compared with those of other workers who studied the transfer of cobalt into an organic drop from an aqueous continuum. The diffusion controlling film is the aqueous one. The rate constant for, the extraction reaction equation is, from this work, kR - 106.34 M3 kmol-1 sec-1 which can be compared with that found by another worker using the reverse transfer system, i. e. kR - 106.18 m3 kmol-I sec-i. . Finally, the mass transfer coefficients were found to change with varying feed concentrations and pH, this is also in agreement with other workers who have studied different liquid-liquid systems.

Abstract:
Enforcing security policies to distributed systems is difficult, in particular, when a system contains untrusted components. We designed AspectKE*, a distributed AOP language based on a tuple space, to tackle this issue. In AspectKE*, aspects can enforce access control policies that depend on future behavior of running processes. One of the key language features is the predicates and functions that extract results of static program analysis, which are useful for defining security aspects that have to know about future behavior of a program. AspectKE* also provides a novel variable binding mechanism for pointcuts, so that pointcuts can uniformly specify join points based on both static and dynamic information about the program. Our implementation strategy performs fundamental static analysis at load-time, so as to retain runtime overheads minimal. We implemented a compiler for AspectKE*, and demonstrate usefulness of AspectKE* through a security aspect for a distributed chat system.

Abstract:

Analog implementation of artificial intelligence in the present Perfect Information type of game has been maturing, so many academics shift the target of studies to imperfect information type of game, of which poker game is the most widespread. In the poker game, the difficulty is that we don’t know cards in opponents’ hand. The incomplete information will affect the player's card playing strategy and also affect the results of simulation implementation. Now, well-known poker games are Bridge, Whistler special license, Russian, Texas Hold 'em Poker, Big-2 ... ... and so on. In this paper, we will discuss the popular poker game ------ Big Two (Big-2) as we study the type of Imperfect Information Game of the main issues.
