Mierowska, Jean Elaine Nora. "The ballads of Carl Loewe : examined within their cultural, human and aesthetic context." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1989. http://eprints.ru.ac.za/2310/1/MIEROWSKA-PhD(Music)-TR90-50.pdf.

Abstract:
This thesis has been written in order to provide, especially for the non-German-reading musician, a fuller picture of Loewe and his ballads than has been available up to now. This picture is developed within the literary background history of the ballad poems, and the literary, mental, and musical climate at the beginning of the Romantic era; further, Loewe's life, as revealed in his many letters, his diaries, and his autobiography, provides the human context from which the ballads emerge as a logical extension of his personality. These earlier parts of the thesis have considerable bearing on the appreciation of Loewe's timely position in musical history, treating as they do with the popularity of the ballad poems, the rapid expansion of the means of musical/emotional expression, and the complete acceptance of that most romantic and versatile of soloinstruments, the piano. Loewe's temperamental affinity with the poetry of the ballads is shown to have affected his choice of subject, and in many cases the ultimate quality of the music is obviously dependent upon the strength or otherwise of his attraction. After observations on Loewe's vocal and piano writing, the thesis treats the ballads primarily with regard to their feeling and emotional content, and investigates the musical means by which this is conveyed. Categories are suggested, and ballads of similar dramatic, pictorial, or emotional type are discussed and compared. Certain formal characteristics are examined, in particular Loewe's use of highly organised motivic work in certain ballads, which foreshadows its later use by Liszt, Wagner and others. Over one hundred of Loewe's 120 ballads are dealt with, some in extensive detail~ and copious musical examples are given. The few comparatively well-known ballads receive due attention, but it was regarded as important to bring to light some of the more neglected or unknown ballads, many of which possess great beauty and originality, amply repaying study and, still more, performance. As a corollary, the approach of the performer is considered, and the Conclusion argues for an informed :esthetic appreciation of Loewe's ballads and their place in teday' s vocal repertoire.

Loewe, Baranger Sonia.

Abstract:
Despite the extensive literature concerning architects of the Modern Movement and debates on the Avant-Garde, several works of architects and artists remain unstudied. The commitments of these individuals contributed to the birth of the Avant-Garde Movement, opening the door for the flourishing of the Modern Movement. This thesis was developed and inspired by the works of two artists, architect Michael Loewe (1871 -1955) and his daughter, the artist Margot Loewe (1905-1974). These artists' work allows us to recognize how these two generations were interwined and contributed the same ideals, as well as how the dialogues between technique and art and between art and industry led to new spaces and new ways of living. This research project was conducted in Berlin, a cultural center of confrontation between tradition and modernity and a city that is in search of a new architectural identity. Berlin represents a major urban and social laboratory that changed from a small provincial capital into a metropolis between 1871 and 1933. This study anlyses this German architect's career, starting from is training and career as a Regierungbaumeister in the Königliche Technische Hochschule of Berlin-Charlottenburg to his architectural accomplishments that were built between 1907 and 1933. The works presented include the buildings of Bismarckstrasse 82-83 (1907), Olivaerplatz 8 (1909), Manfred-von-Richthofen-Strasse 2 (1912), Pariserstrasse 20 (1913), the housing projects of Prausestrasse 5-27 (1920) and of Kuno-Fischerstrasse 3-4-5 (1923), and Pichelwerder (1927). Regarding the works of Michael Loewe prior to World War I, we have identified an initial stage of reaction against the ornamental excess of historical styles and Jugendstil that moved between unadorned designs and geometric simplicity with clear influence from German Neoclassicism . Collaborative works with the prestigious architect-engineer Bruno Möhring were also identified in this stage. In the second stage of hi work in the years between the wars , Michael Loewe envlved and undertook early steps towards a !anguage close to the Neue Sachlichkeit, integrating his project ¡nto the landscape and exploring new technologies and new ways of living that allowed him to express himsell more freely. During his early commitment to Modernity, Michael Loewe's work elicited favorable reactions from supporters of the Neues Bauen, but he was also targeted by the opponents of the New Architecture, whose papers and positions were radicalized, and became the subject of political conflict. In Michael Loewe's work, his professional commitments emerge in favor of the New Objectivity, which raises the issue of the position of art in society and the relationships between art and craft, art and technology, and form and function . Michael Loewe's personal commitments led him to join Existenzminimum proposals, and to experience new ways of living . He encourages his daughter Margot Loewe to study between 1929 and 1933 at the Bauhaus-Dessau under the guidance of Hannes Meyer and Mies van der Rohe. The artistic trajectory of Margot Loewe that is presented corresponds to the brief period between the years of her studies at the Bauhaus-Dessau and her exile. Margot Loewe's work is understood as part of the discussion between utopian Avant-Garde and Bauhaus, as well as its context for dialogue between technology and art, where techlology enabled a new conception of space, which is a common theme in both architecture and art. The technical commitments of Michael Loewe led him to create new formal proposals and as a result of his artistic motivations, he also participated alongside his daughter Margot Loewe in new forms of subjective insight, which created visual impressions and emotions that pushed the architect to experiment with new spaces and led the artist to the abstraction of her painting.

Witkowski, Brian Charles. "Carl Loewe's "Gregor auf dem Stein": A Precursor to Late German Romanticism." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/217070.

Full text
Abstract:
Carl Loewe (1796-1869) was a prolific composer of works for voice and piano with an output exceeding 400 pieces. Just as Schubert pioneered Lieder as a new genre of art music in the nineteenth century, Loewe can be credited for his comparable innovation with the ballad, a narrative song that depicts a story. Though Loewe is often considered a conservative musical figure in the nineteenth century, later romantic composers like Richard Wagner and Hugo Wolf held his ballads in high regard, as they show Loewe's compositional originality in boldly producing drama through the piano-singer format. This document displays how Loewe in his ballad cycle Gregor auf dem Stein, Op. 38 (1834) creates a continuous musical drama to enhance a theological legend. This work is an example of how Loewe foreshadows aspects of later German Romanticism, more fully realized by Wagner and Wolf, through use of musical and dramatic continuity, progressive tonality, motives, and declamatory vocal style.

Abstract:
'Nothing But Letters' are the words used by my paternal grandparents to describe what had remained of their family following its dispersal in the years after the Nazi accession to power in Germany in 1933. The letters became a substitute for what was previously a close family unit. Almost eighty years later, these letters are the primary source material used in this thesis to reconstruct the lives of my parents, Ruth Loew and Taddy Rechtman together with their families. The existence of some 1,500 letters, from members of two families and friends, which had been preserved and which had survived for so many years is itself quite unusual. The correspondence and, in consequence this narrative, is restricted to the years leading up to, and encompassing, the Second World War and its immediate aftermath. As the subtitle indicates this work is a family memoir. It is a thesis in Biography, not a historical monograph. The narrative is anchored around my parents, usually the recipients, but sometimes the authors of the letters. Nevertheless, it is a group biography as it tells their story as well as that of their parents and siblings. It is, however, a story not unlike that of many families who lived through similar historical events and who were affected by circumstances beyond their control. My work is based primarily on letters and documents which were kept mainly by my mother. Other letters, family papers and information came from my father, two surviving aunts and some of my cousins. I also found more letters in two of the archives I visited and there are numerous photographs, now in my possession. Of the twelve protagonists in this narrative only four, my parents and two aunts, were still alive when I started my work and I was able to write clown some of their memories. Sadly all have since died. Most of the letters were written in German, often interspersed with Hebrew words. Some were written in Italian, English or Hebrew. While most of the material consisted of family correspondence, a great number of letters were from friends. All these I had to collect, sort and translate, often with the help of a professional translator, and all the material had to be collated. Personal recollections, as well as collective family memories, had to be verified with information gleaned from the correspondence. The letters often presented a different version of events to recollections based on long memory.

As espécies coletadas e identificadas foram: Elachiptera sacculicornis, Hippelates coxipo, Hippelates. pseudodorsalis, Liohippelates flavipes, Liohippelates nigrifrons, Liohippelates peruanus e Liohippelates tibialis.
Abstract: Liohippelates peruanus (Becker) (Diptera: Chloropidae) is one of the most abundant species in the city of Campinas, São Paulo state and it has been described as mechanical vector of the bacteria Haemophilus aegyptius, the agent of conjunctivitis and of the Brazilian Purpuric Fever (Paganelli & Sabrosky 1993), it occurs in larger number in the hottest periods of the year, being an annoyance in parks, leisure and recreational areas, causing economical damage to tourism. During the period from 01/05/98 to 05/04/99, monthly collections were done in modified of Tinkhan & Dow traps, disposed in as a 3x3 Latin square, with the objective of collecting species of Chloropidae (Insecta:Diptera) with occurrence in the campus of the State University of Campinas distrito de Barão Geraldo (22.48.57º S.; 47.03.33º E.), being considered the seasonality, preference for type of baits and activity period during the day. Seven species were identified, three of than identified as morphospecies: Apallates sp, Conioscinella sp, Monochaetoscinella sp and a non identified species, which was designated as morphospecies 6. The collected and identified species were: Elachiptera sacculicornis, Hippelates coxipo, Hippelates. pseudodorsalis, Liohippelates flavipes, Liohippelates nigrifrons, Liohippelates peruanus and Liohippelates tibialis. The collections were done in the first 5 days of every month. The traps were mounted with 3 types of baits: eviscerated fish, eviscerated mouse and chicken viscera. The data were analysed by seasonal period: autumn /1998, winter /1998, spring /1998, summer 1998-1999 and the total number of frit fries collected by this method was of 6.488 males and 19.503 females, with an approximate sex ratio of 3:1 (female: male). the spring was the seasonal period that presented the largest numbers of collected individuals, with 7696 females and 2254 males, while in the autumn the number of collected individuals was the smallest: 3385 females and 1375 males. The difference in individuals collected during the spring was significant in comparison with other periods. The results show that most species are more active in the first hours of the morning (from 6:00 h up to 10:00 h) and in the evening (between 16:00 h and 18:00 h), and there was no significant among the first, next to the last and last collections done during the day. With the objective of studying the biology of this insect, an effective and simple way was developed for the breeding of immatures of this insect in the laboratory. The experiment was done in the laboratory, in constant temperatures of 22 oC, 24 oC, 27 oC and 29 oC and relative humidity of 80% ( + 5%). The data were analyzed by the statistical Program MINITAB 10.1 and they showed that the basal temperature (TB) for the development of the immatures, from egg to adult was of 16,97 ºC. Colonies of Liohippelates peruanus were kept at 27 ºC and humidity of 80% ( + 5%), in order to determine some parameters of the life table date, such as: reproductive rates (Ro = 1,95 days), generation time (T = 30,91 days), increment rate (rm = 0,02167) and natural increment finite rate (Rm = 1,022). It was determinated from the value of Rm and the generation time (31 days) that them was an increment of 589 individuals for a population of 600 individuals (300 M:300 F). The value of the survival of the population (Entropy) was H=0,604857, indicating that a pattern more than 0,5, in the which indicates one of deaths happens in an arithmetic progression, with a negative reason. The mortality rate (K) they indicate that the largest rates happened in the last 4 weeks: 82%, 38%, 86% and 100%, respectively 7th, 8 th, 9 th and 10 th. With the objective of verifying the individuals percentage that would die among a certain week and other a table of probability was built, where the individual percentage that can survive of a period the another was verified. Life expectation for each period, means to oviposition, larvae breeding, adult maintenance also are described. With the objective of verifying the height of flight activity of Chloropidae species, the modified trap of Thinkan was used, baited with eviscerated mouse, disposed in three heights, distributed in 3X3 latin square, three collections were taken in each day. The sampling of each station was done in the average period of each seasonal period, for ten days. The results showed that in the coldest periods (winter and autumn) there was greater number of individuals collected in next traps to the ground, while in the hotter seasonal periods (spring and summer), there was larger activity of these insects according with the heigh of the trap. These preliminary data can contribute in futures experiments that involve the study of this important family of Diptera, once that knowledge about the biology of Chloropidae in Brazil has been smallest

Throughout his career, Michael Löwy was most notable by rereading several authors and worldviews from the past to the brightening possibilities of the actual times - characterized, among others, by the increasing lack of capitalist “progress” and the current model of civilization, as suggested by the vertiginous emergency of the ecological crisis. From this viewpoint, this dissertation’s goal is to present and discuss Michael Löwy’s theoretical and political defense of the rupture necessity of marxism from the progress ideologies and the modern-capitalism civilizacional paradigm. The central hypothesis is that the subject-matter of modernity’s critique - which concret expression may be found on debates on eco-socialism - is the center line in which it will be possible to check out on 8 Michael Löwy’s career its concret intellectual history: from his first works in the 60’s till his most recent incursions on different expressions of critical and/or utopical modernity’s refusal, such as benjaminian critiques to the winners “progressive” temporality, weberian and romantic critiques to modernity and, at last, the utopian-religious rejection of modern capitalism, present in some Central Europe jewish messianism expressions and in latin-american liberating christianity

This work was carried out from August 2007 to July 2011, in Itabora?, RJ, Brazil, and aimed to identify the Calliphoridae species exist in a mangrove swamp, verifying which are the predominant species, highlighting the proportions of males and females, and also analyzing the influence of abiotic factors such as temperature, humidity and moon phases, and also providing an analysis of the abundance, richness, diversity and similarity between the periods of sampling, ecological relationships between species of the same family and the ecological relationship between Calliphoridae and Phoridae parasitoids in Guapi-Mirim Environmental Protection Area, (Guapi-Mirim EPA) in the same city. Semiweekly collections were carried out over 48 months (96 collections). The traps were suspended at a height of 1.20 m above the ground for a period of 48 hours for each collection. To trap and collect the flies, four plastic traps (35 cm x 15 cm) were placed 100m apart each other in the studied area. The bait used was based on fish (sardine) in decomposition. The insects caught were killed by asphyxiation with 70% ethanol inside the trap. After asphyxiation all specimens were put into plastic pots containing 70% ethanol. The specimens were taken to the Laborat?rio de Transmissores de Leishmanioses (Setor de Entomologia M?dica e Forense) - IOC/FIOCRUZ, RJ, where they were separated by the collection day, counted and then identified using a stereoscopic microscope and the dichotomous keys for families and species. The abundance of Calliphoridae flies was statistically analyzed using the Statistica 7.1 program (StatSoft 2005) for the non-parametric test Kruskal-Wallis one way ANOVA (p< 0.05). Also the Kendall Tau Correlation test, Mann-Whitney (significance of 95%; p<0.05) and chi-square test (?2) were used to analyze. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index, Bray-Curtis similarity and Euclidean Distance were used. A total of 4,531flies were collected. These flies belonged to ten (10) species of the Calliphoridae family: Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius, 1794) (86.40%), Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann,1819) (5.72%), Cochliomyia macellaria (Fabricius, 1775) (4.94%), Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann, 1818) (2.10%), Lucilia eximia (Wiedemann, 1819) (0.30%), Cochliomyia hominivorax (Cocquerel, 1858) (0.22%), Chloroprocta idioidea (Robineau-Desvoidy, 1930) (0.20%), Hemilucilia segmentaria (Fabricius, 1805) (0.04%), Hemilucilia semidiaphana (Rondani, 1850) (0.04%), Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann,1830) (0.04%). The species C. megacephala was the one that presented the greatest abundance. Spring was the preferred season for all species; temperatures between 30.5 and 32.40C and relative humidity between 56.8 and 61.7% were considered those where there was a frenzy of oviposition; the full and new moons were the phases during which there was a higher occurrence of flies; Megaselia scalaris occurred more frequently in the most abundant Calliphoridae species in the same season of the year thus allowing greater dispersion of eggs; Calliphoridae species had a higher rate survival with increased food resources resulting from the polluting activity
Foram capturadas 4531 moscas pertencentes a dez (10) esp?cies da fam?lia Calliphoridae: Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius, 1794) (86,40%), Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann,1819) (5,72%), Cochliomyia macellaria (Fabricius, 1775) (4,94%), Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann, 1818) (2,10%), Lucilia eximia (Wiedemann, 1819) (0,30%), Cochliomyia hominivorax (Cocquerel, 1858) (0,22%), Chloroprocta idioidea (Robineau-Desvoidy, 1930) (0,20%), Hemilucilia segmentaria (Fabricius, 1805) (0,04%), Hemilucilia semidiaphana (Rondani, 1850) (0,04%), Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann,1830) (0,04%).

Abstract: Music and Poetry. How the two art forms interact, what meanings are created, emphasized, modified and how the performance is built and enriched from this interaction is the reflection that impels the present work. A text-music analysis aiming towards the interpretation and performance of four Lieder - settings from the Romantic period of the poem Gretchen am Spinnrade from J. W. Goethe is presented here. The settings of Louis Spohr (Gretchen), Franz Schubert (Gretchen am Spinnrade), Carl Loewe (Meine Ruh ist hin), e Richard Wagner (Meine Ruh ist hin) will be approached. After introductory considerations about the genre Lied and about the poet are made, an analysis of the poem is presented, which will ground the interpretation of the songs. Content and formal aspects of the text are considered, as well as its contextualization in the play Faust I, from where it was extracted. Afterwards, a musical analysis of the songs is presented, focusing on the existing text-music relations and taking aspects from the vocal line as well as the accompaniment into consideration. During the analysis interpretative suggestions are made, based on the text-music relations

Abstract:
Now all but forgotten, the songs of Sidney Homer (1864-1953) were at one time well-regarded and often performed. Married to the great American contralto Louise Homer, he was in a unique position to have his songs performed by the great artists of the time. Unlike the cloying "parlor songs" of many of his contemporaries, his works consistently demonstrate a respect for both the great poets as well as the European art-song tradition. One of the most cosmopolitan of the American composers of his day, his involvement with Louise's career brought him into contact with many of the great composers and performers of the day including Massenet, Puccini, Humperdinck, Mahler, Toscanini and Caruso. When viewed in their entirety, his songs reveal not only a tremendous variety, but also the maturation of his compositional style.

Fachin, Diego Aguilar.

Full text
Abstract:
Among the twelve subfamilies of Stratiomyidae, the Sarginae include 22 genera and 562 described species worldwide, of which 267 are Neotropical. There is still not a cladistic analysis for the subfamily or to the genera. Most of the Sarginae genera are poorly delimited, with diagnosis based mainly on plesiomorphies. The Acrochaeta falls into this situation, because many species of Merosargus have been identified as Acrochaeta due to the presence of elongated antenna and the similar color pattern of scutum between species of both genera. In addition, there is taxonomic and morphological inaccuracy in descriptions of species of Acrochaeta and Merosargus, and lack of illustrations of male and female genitalias of the species, information that could be useful in the delimitation of the genera. This study, hence, makes a taxonomic revision and a cladistic analysis of the genus Acrochaeta, aiming to define the genus from phylogenetic perspective. The Acrochaeta now includes 15 species (seven described and eigth new species). In this study, three Acrochaeta species were transferred to Merosargus: M. chalconota comb. nov, M. longiventris comb. nov. and M. picta comb. nov. Another was moved to Chrysochlorina (Chrysochlorininae): C. elegans comb. nov. In addition, M. convexifrons were moved to Acrochaeta: A. convexifrons comb. nov. The genera Acrochaeta and all previously described species were redescribed, and the new species were described. An identification key to species of the genus is provided. A cladistic analysis is performed, 45 terminal taxa and 63 morphological characters, resulting in four most parsimonious trees (equal weighting). Problems of homology, the position of species in the topology, character evolution and robustness of clades are discussed based on the strict consensus phylogeny. The monophyly of Acrochaeta was recovered by characters of head, thorax and abdomen. An inner clade in the genus was recovered, especially based on characters of the male genitalia. Furthermore, a wide selection of outgroups allowed preliminary results on the non-monophyly of Merosargus, because some of its species being closer to Acrochaeta and Himantigera than a clade that includes the type-species of the genus, Merosargus obscurus.
