Full textThe study is based on a project that is a cooperation between Tyréns AB, Martinsons AB and Murman Arkitekter. They are about to construct two tall wooden houses in Sandåkern, Umeå. The purpose of this study was to define and calculate the beams, which are exposed to the highest amount of loads. This type of beam is located under the access balcony, which is on every floor between the apartments. These calculations also include the effects of moisture ratio and the acoustics plate´s ability to inhibit vibration noise. The results show that the investigated beam is sufficient, considering the loads that it will be exposed to. The acoustic plate prevents the noise and vibration from the access balcony to be heard inside the apartments. To be sure that the moisture ratio is acceptable it is important that the roofing felt is applied correctly. If not, the moisture will increase and within a few years the wooden beams probably will be weakened with rot and mold. The strength of the beam decreases with the same amount moisture ratio increases. As shown in the result of the control of climate class 3, the qualification of deflection is not achieved with higher moisture. In summary the investigated beam and the acoustic plate has correct dimensions, only if the roofing felt is mounted accurately with no open passages for moisture.

Full textHotel Atrium is built in the small town Mariefred, which is a seasonal tourist resort. The hotel offers public functions for both hotel residents and residents of Mariefred. It is in the hotel that meetings between residents and guest occurs, between acquaintances and strangers , between new and old faces . The hotel is to be open and accessible to all, so it was important with public functions on the ground floor. Light, meetings, sight lines and movements , that characterizes the site, are found in the hotel's atrium that gives the sought light and sight lines. The strict form has a playful expression in the facade to create an interesting addition to the site and a contrasting relationship to the central oval room. Around the atrium there are exterior corridors to which the lobby is the central room that you can overlook from the balconies and take part of the life there, inspired by Arabic and cloister architecture.

Full textMy starting point in this project was to explore how people in old age can live with dignity and what kind of needs that arises. The investigation revealed that elder moves in more confined spaces but apart from that their needs are not that different as one might think. Instead of focusing on elder, I have emphasized on a home that can withstand the trials of life whether it´d be a broken leg, wheelchair or old age. The housing should feel secure, stable and durable. At the same time, I want it to protect every individual's private sphere and in the residential area there is a gradient of various publicity degrees. The houses' construction is a bearing outer skin of brick with concrete floors and a pitched roof with a roof truss in wood. The brick wall is a double-skin external wall with where the outer skin provides protection against the weather while the inner wall is the loadbearing element. Each residential block is built on a principle where volumes are added vertically. One reaches the apartments by the stairs of the shared access balcony or the elevator that connects three apartments on each floor.

Full textA new urban building with combined residential and commercial spaces above the north entrance to Stadshagens underground station, Kungsholmen, Stockholm, Sweden. In the proposal I explore residential flats with a modular room system and gangway entrances (loftgångar) combined with glazed balcony’s on the south facing facade. Thus enabling adaptable living arias that can be altered after the individual residents needs. The proposal also explores design alternatives for the buildings street facade, aiming at creating a organic facade within a system of prefabricated building components. The proposal also aims to comply with Swedish building standards and the building program for the assigned plot given by the city of Stockholm, incorporating office and retail spaces with the entrance to the underground station and a passageway to the adjacent Stadshagsparken.

Full textThe access balcony buildings took place around the million program as a cheaper version in residential buildings. This mainly because each elevator serves more apartments per floor compared to what was achieved with previous housing types. At the same time, this type of solution generates a more efficient use of the living space, with the possibility of consistent apartment divisions when the entrances are located on the outside of the facade. Since the primary purpose of access balconies is to be as cost-effective as possible, the architectural expression in the facade is usually out of priority as well as the lack of privacy and daylighting. In this report, the pros and cons of access balcony buildings will be set against each other, with information retrieved from literature, the Internet and companies. Proposals for solutions for reduced visibility, daylight emission, architectural expression of the building and some other aspects will be presented, to ultimately result in design proposals for a modern and optimized access balcony building.

Full textThis project is about how we can live near each other in the city, while having clear boundaries around the areas we share. Where do we meet in the city? Where does the private sphere become commune? Communication, such as stairs and corridors, in residential houses has been reduced to a minimum. The result of this is that the balance between architecture and function is very unstable. To instead see this as a social area has the potential to create a vibrant atmosphere where more private functions are shared with the communication. How can we share space? What can the house share with the city? What can the user share with each other? Sharing is a potential way to save energy. How can we build to promote this? In the process, I have tried to define what creates an attractive residential building in a city context. I have done this by model sketching and analyze these in relation to examples of successful residential buildings. The formation of the communication and what we can share in a residential building are the two main questions in this project. How can the dwelling house be an extension to the city while signal a private sphere?

Full textThe housing policy conducted over the past two decades has resulted in an increasingly segregated city center in Stockholm. The abolishment of housing subsidies in the 90s led to a historic low rate of construction and an urban development unilaterally directed towards the wealthy. Parallel to this, much of the housing stock has been converted to condominiums which caused many relatively cheap rental apartments in older buildings to disappear from the stock. These are difficult to replace with new housing, as they are more expensive. The core issue is of course that it is expensive to build houses and assuming that the current housing policy will last, it is highly relevant to develop cost-effective construction methods in order to make possible apartments with affordable rents that can help to combat segregation over time. Our proposal consists of a residential building in Stadshagen. The property is divided into two buildings that are linked together by a system of access balconies connected to a stairwell. The houses are constructed with volume elements stacked on a concrete base. The design of the elements is based on shipping containers which provides a rational construction process and a high degree of prefabrication. The base contains an underground entrance, a business premise and common areas for the residents. The apartments are available in three sizes whereof the larger apartments have two floors.
