Full textThe purpose of this paper is to juxtapose the theories of learning that are reflected in student’s perspectives of the learning log with that of the pedagogical intentions of the curriculum in order to examine the discrepancy between the experienced and the intentional learning objectives. The paper is divided into two sections. The first section is a literature survey on theories related to the learning log and the curriculum. The second part is constituted by three semi-structured group interviews concerning student´s views on the learning log. An effort is then made to fit the student´s perspective into a theoretical framework to allow comparison with the pedagogical motives contained in the curriculum and its underlying ideas. The interviews indicate that the learning log is used mainly as a means to facilitate individualistic work forms, which is an ill fit with perspective on learning presented within the curriculum. The study is concluded with suggestions for actions that would narrow this gap and free the unused learning potential of the learning log.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to investigate what potential a digital multimodal logbook can have as a digital bridge between students and teacher educator during the practice-based part of the education, to support students in their professional development as well as in their development of knowledge. Socio-semiotic resources, such as digital tools, were used for this purpose. I have studied how a group of student teachers use the semiotic resources offered in the digital multimodal logbook during the practice-based part of their education, aiming to communicate their professional development and their knowledge development by a digital bridge to the university. By using text analysis, influenced by a hermeneutic model, I have studied what can facilitate, but also prevent students' work in the logbooks and the result are discussed in relation to the concept of semiotic resources and multimodality. Through a text analysis, influenced by a hermeneutic modell – in terms of an expanded text concept – are the students work in the digital multimodal log books investigated. The results are reported and discussed with a focus on the students’ use of socio-semiotic resources and multimodalities. The reason for using text analysis as a method was a desire to identify factors that could influence communication through digital bridges in a digital multimodal logbook. The study contained 13 logbooks who have been analysed from whole to parts at four occasions. The results show that students with digital knowledge could communicate their expectations and their learning by using the socio-semiotic resources that were offered. Students with limited basic digital knowledge did not use the resources they were offered which resulted in the fact that they lost the opportunity to create meaning in this context by using the offered resources.

Full textThe purpose with this study is to find myself a perception if the tools that are being used in the writing process has any meaning for students' learning. I've choosed to examine two classes in preschool who are working with different tools for writing. One of them is using iPads and the other one is using pencils. The main goal with my survey is to get an understanding whether the logbook and the process that comes with it has any affects from the different tools that are being used in the process of writing in the logbook. Furthermore, I want to see if the students can develop during the writing of the logbook and if the development is dependent on the writing tool used by the student. The methods I have chosen are qualitative interviews, structured observations and a form of text analysis around the material logbook. My main material is the logbook. I have chosen 2 students from each class whose logbooks I studied from the beginning of the autumn term until today. Interviews were conducted with class teachers from each pre-school class. The two selected students from each class also participated in two interviews. The observations were performed under 8 logbook lessons based on an observation schedule. As a result, pupils developed no matter what tool they are writing with. What I also found out is that the two tools help to create the basis for writing but with different styles. I realized that the writing tools iPad and pen were difficult to investigate based on one of the syllabus requirements that the study aims at. None of the tools are less good, but it´s about getting teachers to become aware that the tools contribute differently to teaching students writing according to our frameworks. The reason for writing is placed in the early years. This means that students in pre-school have to exercise a lot and must be given the opportunity to try different writing tools to learn to feel safe in using them.

Full textIn this independent project three kinds of strategies for learning with focus on learning lyrics is described and explored. For every new strategy a new song is used. The purpose is to explore and identify different kinds of resources when learning. The study is based on observations of myself in form of a logbook and video recordings over three weeks with a total of 15 practicing sessions in the fall of 2015. The starting point is a multimodal and design theoretical perspective. The result show how I use different resources when learning different lyrics by using three kinds of strategies for learning lyrics. Finally I discuss, in relation to the design theoretical perspective and earlier research.

Full textI this thesis I have explored my processes when composing and arranging for an ensemble consisting of electric guitar, electric bass, drums and four wind instruments. During two semesters I kept a log over the different events in which I’ve been working with this creative process, events such as composing, lessons with teachers and rehearsals with the ensemble. The result is reported in the themes The search of a compositional flow, Seeds that germinate and grow and The feeling of finding new ways. These themes are in the last chapter discussed in relation to previous research on the subject and a hermeneutic phenomenological perspective.

Full textThis self-study is about my motivation and its ties to my tuba practicing. The purpose of this study is to shine light on the aspects that makes me motivated to practice the tuba. This is done through a phenomenological perspective. The background to the study is that I wanted to get better insights in practice techniques and insights in my motivation, and possible reasons to why I am not motivated sometimes. The method of choice has been writing in a journal. The journal entries have then been the foundation for the study, and the analysis of the entries are what lies as a foundation for the result, and the discussion behind the result.

Full textThis report demonstrates my research on how students may improve their progress in course with the help of journal writing. I have based my research on two courses within the Restaurant, bar and wine program at Studium Hospitality & Bakery in Gothenburg. I came up with the idea for the research when I noticed how the students experienced little to no feedback and didn´t really understand what they should do to excel in their courses. The purpose of the research is to develop a practical and easy-to-work journal and to find out if journal writing can improve the communication between teachers and teacher students. To achieve this I implemented a journal in two courses. The feedback from the students was positive. They thought the journals quickly became a natural tool to be able to see their own progress and also, they were able to have an ongoing interaction between teacher and student. In conclusion the journal has given a better overview of the progress a student makes during the course. The journal works as a tool to oversee attendance and it is also an important communication channel between student and teacher. Through the work with the journal the students document their own progression within the course, hence will be able to detect the next step of their development. The journal gives the students the opportunity to discuss which elements of the course have been critical to reach increased progression. It has also given the teachers an important tool to develop their teaching.

Full textThe AEC industry is in the midst of a paradigm shift - this in conjunction with BIM replacing traditional working methods within the construction process. BIM, also called object-oriented information management, is currently used for 3D modeling, visualization and coordination. However BIM is not being utilized to its full potential. There are also occurring changes regarding the environmental aspects of construction. Environmental requirements are not only legal, but are now requested by the clients themselves. One reason for these changes is increased environmental awareness and another is the fact that the construction industry has a vital role in sustainable development. Environmental certification of building projects promotes an environmentally friendly production. ‟Miljöbyggnad” is one of the most common certifications in Sweden because it is adapted to the Swedish building regulations. One of the assessment criteria for ‟Miljöbyggnad” is the logbook documentation of all the building materials used. It is the contractor who is responsible for the logbook and for the environmental building certification during the production. This thesis investigates how logbook management for environmental certification can be efficient and optimized in the context of BIM. The first stage of the thesis was devoted to the identification of problems related to logbook management. This was done with the use of surveys and complementary interviews. In the second phase BIM experts were interviewed in order to find practical applications for BIM in the log management process. The survey revealed several areas of concern within current logbook management. However these problems can be resolved if construction companies can establish a consistent work methodology, define the logbook procedures and implement experience feedback. Analysis of the interviews resulted in suggestions for possible streamlining of logbook procedures using BIM –one solution which is possible to implement today and three for future use. The solution which has been named "Excel list with GUID" can be applied today. Here, the BIM model generated during the design stage, is used to streamline the logbook process with the help of unique reference numbers. Automatic quantity take off for construction products is an example of a streamlined logbook process. Three solutions are possible for future material documentation in BIM: An application, integrated computing platforms or a company shared database. In the future results can be considerably improved with an automated logbook process. The logbook within the BIM model creates the opportunity for traceability and visualization. It eliminates costly and time-consuming steps in comparison with todays logbook management. The conclusion is that construction companies should invest in a company-wide database for all computing platforms, but the future of material documentation with BIM exists in an integrated solution with the BIM model and a PLM system.

Full textThis is a self-study in how to become a skilled improviser on saxophone, with the purpose of researching how to develop a higher level of freedom in improvising. A view introduced in the introduction of the study, is that all music basically generates from improvisation. For an improvisation to be a real composition in the now, it demands a highly developed skill, with the ability to play out from an inner creative intuition, rather than only from what might be theoretically correct. The methods used for the research are daily notes about the process in a journal and video-recordings of me improvising. The theoretic eyeglasses that are used are phenomenological. What kind of methods or tools will appear beneficial in developing improvisation skill to a level of reaching a ”flow” of composing music here and now? This is the question asked according to a phenomenological tradition. These methods and tools have been practiced and documented in about four months. The final result is based on the notes in the journal and the video-recordings. Different methods in how to develop improvisation is presented and evaluated. The result shows a development of improvising from musical frames more easy to manage, as well as taking challenges and train for more advanced skills. Encouraging for everyone, who wants to improvise, is that the result shows that it is possible to find a flow in improvising on the base of skill already established. To be able to improvise in a more and more advanced way, practice is of course necessary. Important for developing improvisation skills is to play together with others and preferably with an audience. To be able to do that courage must be added. Finally the result is discussed together with the methods used to develop improvisation, as well as the meaning of flow.

Full textThe purpose of this self-study is to study what the effects of practicing Kundalini yoga can be on my overall well-being and regarding my voice and singing practice. This investigates from a phenomenological perspective, where my own experiences are analyzed. The method for documentation is logbook and voice recordings to present detailed descriptions of my own experiences before, during and after practicing yoga associated to vocal practice. The result shows that I am experiencing increased body awareness, a clearer and more focused mind and increased relaxation after I have been practicing yoga. According to the increased level of body awareness this seem to affect my voice and vocals through immersed knowledge and senses of what is happening during singing from a perspective of vocal technique. The discussion of the result relates my own experiences to previous research and background literature and contributes to a connection of several factors regarding practicing yoga and vocal practice. Further ascertained conclusions shows how body, mind, breath, voice and vocals perceive to relate, and how practicing yoga especially may have a secondary effect of the vocal aspect.

Full textThe purpose of this study is based on a design theoretic perspective, exploring what resources I use when transposing jazz tunes to different keys. The research questions are: What resources do I use to transpose a selected jazz tune to different keys? In what ways interact the resources? To study my learning process, I have used the logbook and video documentation, and the study's theoretical perspective is the design theory. The result shows that my learning process can be described in two different transformation cycles. These cycles, I have chosen to call the transformation cycle 1a and 1b. Transformation cycle 1a describes the resources used for transcription, and Transformation cycle 1b describes the resources used for transposing. The first transformation cycle 1a is presented by means of three themes: Staging, From the PC to the ear and From ear to hand. The other cycle, 1b, is presented by means of four themes: Transposing from A-flat major to C major, Problems during the transposing, Transposing to other keys and Transformation of previous knowledge. The discussion chapter discusses the results from a design theoretic perspective. The discussion also touches questions of strategy about transposing, which these being compared with the previous literature and research in the area. Finally, an account is given of my own reflections on the work, the importance of work and further research and development work.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to investigate the roll of the thumb in piano technique, what methods can be used to reduce involuntary tensions in the thumb and whether dedicated practise over a certain time period can lead to a noticeable improvement of thumb technique. The study is based on a phenomenological perspective and self-observations using a logbook and video recordings. Research suggests that excessive straining of the thumb’s muscles is common among pianists, and that fingers affect each other in their movements. Literature on piano technique regularly discuss how the thumb can affect piano playing as well as the problems of involuntary tensions. The results of this study discuss my experiences of progress, what methods I used and what advantages I experienced in relation to less tension in the thumbs. The results show that I, on account of my dedicated practising, experienced an improvement in thumb technique on several levels, that different methods to reduce the amount of tension in the thumbs were found, and that there were several advantages with freer thumbs, for example reduced fatigue and more satisfying musical performances. The study discusses the results in relation to earlier literature and research and establishes connections between, among other things, applied methods and how fatigue in the muscles is manifested during piano playing.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to examine determinants of stress and tension in my own saxophone playing. I experience relaxation as a method to counteract practicing saxophone in a tense state. The study is based on the following research question: How can relaxation enhance physical and mental awareness, and solve habitual tension in playing the saxophone? From a phenomenological perspective, I have examined both physical and mental experiences that appeared during and after completed relaxation- and saxophone exercise, through a logbook. Physical and mental states were examined in relation to both my increased abilities of relaxation and my saxophone playing in general. Furthermore, the results section goes further into depth of how an increased awareness concerning bodily and mental experience decreased physical and mental stress. Moreover, the implications of the present study presents how my saxophone practice and musical performances changed in line with the relaxation intervention over time. The results are linked to previous research and other relevant literature in the discussion chapter. Finally, suggestions on further research is presented.

Full textMy project is about studying how the different saxophone sizes interact in an ensemble. The purpose of the study is to investigate how I change the way I play the saxophonewhen switching from baritone saxophone to soprano saxophone in a saxophone quartet. My research questions are: How do I change the way I play the saxophone and my role inthe ensemble when I switch from playing baritone saxophone to playing sopranosaxophone? What are these differences due to? In the background chapter, concepts thatare important to the topic are presented such as rhythm, intonation, embouchure, support, formal roles and informal roles. The theoretical foundation of the study is ahermeneutic perspective. The methodology chapter presents the methods I used, namely video observation and logbook. Finally, the results of the analyzes made of theswitch from baritone saxophone to soprano saxophone are presented. The studypresents all the changes I have made regarding intonation, pace, rhythm, phrasing;embouchure, air, articulation; posture, movement, motor skills, leadership and roles.

Full textThis study examines how planning can be designed and how planning of practice affects practice motivation. The motivation for the study is based on a lost motivation for practice that I strive to find again. The study is based on the design theory perspective. The material for the study was collected through video observations and a journal, and the material was analysed relative to questions based on the design theory perspective. The result of the study shows that I use many different kinds of semiotic resources in my practice. It also shows that planning of my practice affects my practice positively, as I have a clearer view of what I should practice.

Full textIn this self-study, I explore my own learning process in musical composition during time pressure. Six compositions are written with three different deadlines: four days, two days and three hours. There are two compositions for each deadline. The study is based on a phenomenological perspective with supporting literature and scientific research on musical composition and the correlation between work and time pressure. This study uses log records and video observations as methods of documentation while thematic analysis is used to analyze the collected data. The result answers two questions: How I experience working with limited time? and What methods are used to finish in time? The result is split into four categories each after its own deadline: four day composition, two day composition and three hour composition. These four categories have two subcategories: The compositions method and the experience in composing with time pressure. In the discussion, these results are set in relation to the selected literature, research and the phenomenological perspective.

Full textPurpose: There are difficulties in avoiding construction products containing hazardous substances considering that the use of these products are inevitable in some projects. Documentation regarding product selection plays a key role as traceability requires thorough documentation. By adding further control of built-in-products it is ensured that necessary information is available for decision making and problem solving. This will allow the managing of possible legislative changes, during reconstruction or when chemical substances get their classification status changed. Product selection has become a more common occurrence in the construction industry since the release of Miljöbalkens second chapter 6 §, The Product selection principle (Produktvalsprincipen). This legislation has called for product selection to avoid hazardous products where they can be replaced with products less dangerous. The propose with this bachelor thesis is to map how a property developer/facility manager in the public sector transacts the work regarding product selection, map the problems related to the procedure and find a solution to the problem with the help of Building Information Modelling (BIM). Method: To create the theoretical framework of the report a literature study has been conducted. The empirical collection has been made in the form of a case study with empirical collection through interviews and document analysis. Findings: The thesis has mapped how the property developer/facility manager conducts product selection and how the property developer/facility manager sets the requirements connected to product selection. The entrepreneur documents the selected products with an outlook in set requirements in a log book. Problems the study has found are that all utilized products are not documented. The authors have further found that as BIM technology progresses it will eventually enable clients to procure specific BIM models enriched with specific product information. When information is stored in the BIM model it is possible to ensure more efficient information management with the help of information delivery specifications when transferring information in between systems. BIM technology also enables a more efficient follow up of requirements and in the long term a less labour intensive product selection process. Implications: The thesis bases the clarification of requirements and problems that the product selection consists of during the construction planning and construction stage. For the product selection to proceed with quality in mind, set requirements should be followed and the ones responsible for documenting products should undergo adequate training. The thesis proposes clients to connect economic incentives to purchase payments when product documentation is complete. A BIM-model can when maturity level is achieved compile of- and be utilized as product documentation. Limitations: The thesis result is limited in the sense that the investigations that has been conducted has examined the construction phase from early design to final inspection and has studied one project alone.

Full textI have been fascinated by improvised music for a long time, despite my lack of experience in this area. With my roots firmly set in classical music, I would like to expand and develop myself as a musician. The study examines my life-world and how it is affected when I am outside my comfort zone and studying the phenomenon of improvisation. The purpose of this study is to ascertain which practice strategies I use when learning a jazz blues on the alto saxophone. The method applied is the log book, in which I record my observations after each practice session. The study was based on a life-world perspective that belongs to the phenomenological movement. The analysis of the rehearsal process focuses on my own reflections and conclusions when practicing improvisation based on my life-world. The results show different aspects of positive and negative evaluation in the study as well as possible conclusions from this. The result further indicates what I have chosen to practice in the study, similarities in the progression of various exercises as well as the differences in the practice strategies that are listed. My own curiosity and imagination are explored when I am taken outside my comfort zone, explore uncharted ground, and practice improvisation. Finally, I discuss the results in relation to literature and previous research in the field and consider my own reflections on the study and my continued research in the field of improvisation.

Full textThe purpose of this self-study has been to investigate whether yoga can help improve my irregular thoracic breathing and if an improved respiration could facilitate better breathing in my vocal exercise. The study is permeated by a phenomenology perspective with focus on phenomenology of the body and Husserl's life-world theory. As the perspective is viewed as an experience philosophy, my own experiences are in focus, which motivates logbook as documentation method. The result is therefore based on my own notes, which were processed and analysed after a 15-week project-period, with the purpose to make the effects of the practised yoga visible. The result is presented in two themes, were the first one focuses on experiences related to stress and breathing, and the other one on the singing experience and how this experience changed during the project period. The result shows that the exercise of yoga had a stress-reducing effect, which positively affected my breathing. In addition, it shows that I found it easier to sing, which leads to increased motivation. To understand these phenomena, a discussion is held, linking the results to previous research and literature. The discussion leads to the conclusion that several factors, such as increased activity in the parasympathetic nervous system, increased energy production as in part of an improved breathing, increased relaxation, and increased body and voice control as a result of conscious acts, had a coherent impact on the outcome.

Full textThe purpose of this self-observation study is to investigate how various predetermined practice designs, based on auditory, visual and imaginary approaches, are used to learn text by heart in musical contexts. The study is based on a design-theoretical perspective focusing on how semiotic resources are used for learning. For six weeks, I practiced an hour every day. Each practice session was documented in a logbook and about 15 minutes was were video recorded. Finally, I discuss the result in relation to previous research

Full textThe purpose of this self study was born out of an assumption I have made of myself, that I find it difficult to learn song lyrics by heart and perform them by heart. From a hermeneutic perspective the study takes a deep dive into my learning process whilst learning song lyrics. The study is documented by video and logbook writing, where I learn two songs by heart. The analysis results are summarized in four themes based on my research questions: strengths in the rehearsal process, interpreted as empathy of the text where I create inner pictures and stories, and weaknesses in the rehearsal process, interpreted as practice strategy and playing the piano, as well as a comparison between using pre-recorded music or not, a comparison focusing on the purpose of pre-recorded music and its consequences for me; consequently that the pre-recorded music was used as a confirmation for correct pronunciation of the lyrics. The discussion debates the interpretation of the results against the background literature and previous research.

Full textIn this self-study, I explore my own learning process while writing a composition for violin, flute and piano. The study is based on the perspective of design theory and is also based on literature and research in the subject of composition and music-making. This self-study is also based on observations from several video, sound and log recorded compositional events during autumn 2017. The result chapter is divided into three different stages of the process of the composition: The beginning of the composition, The development of the compositionand The final phase of the composition. The result answers the two research questions and the purpose of this study: What resources do I use when writing music and how the actual process of my composition takes place. In the discussion, these results are set in relation to the selected literature, research and the design theory perspective.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to examine how a percussionist uses her body as a semiotic resource and how the process of practising during a limited period is designed. In order to realize this I have self-monitored my 20 minute long practice sessions five days a week during a five-week period. This process has been documented by a video recording device and by writing a log after each session. In the analysis I use design theory as a theoretical perspective. The results show that my body is used both as an expressive tool as well as substitute for the metronome. During the practice sessions, tempo appears to be the main focus, and the musical piece is played in separate movements and rarely played from beginning to end. In the last chapter usage of the body as a semiotic resource is discussed from a design theoretical perspective. Lastly the use and quality of my practice strategy is discussed in relation to relevant literature and research.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to find out what kind of motivational factors has an inpact on my practice. The study is based on a life-world perspective and the choosen observation method is logbook writing. In the background chapter accounts for the different motivational theories and the theoretical perspective phenomenology with a direction towards the life-world perspective. Results are presented by the help of three different main themes: Conditions, having a goalandphysical and mental factors. The result shows that factors such as time, environment, instruments, tiredness, stress and physical obstaclesaffects my motivation. Having a goal proves to be the crucial factor for my motivation; which in turn needs to appear before the practice.Chapter on results are then concluded with a summary and a number of conclusions. The study ends with a discussion based on what is stated in the result and background chapter. The crucial factorandunderstanding of my life-worldare two of four aspects that will be discussed. The discussion ends with highlighting the importance of this study for my future profession as a teacher and also for other active teachers in both music and other subjects. Ideas on how the subject matter can be further developed are also highlighted during the final part of the discussion.

Full textIn this self-study the experience of arranging for string instruments is examined based on different musical parameters. The purpose of this study is to analyze these experiences and to examine how the attitude and self-confidence varies and develops. During three months, arrangements of eight songs of varying character are created, where the process is documented with the help of a journal and analyzed with thematic analysis. With support from the phenomenological perspective and selected literature, a result is presented based on the following questions: How do different musical parameters such as hearing, rhythm and harmonization affect when arranging? How is the arrangement process experienced based on attitude, self-confidence and challenges? The results are divided into two themes based on these issues, musical parameters and the experience of arrangement. The results show that an aural-based arrangement is experienced as pleasurable and challenging. Development in terms of harmonization and music theory is analyzed and when arranging for students, it is concluded that the balance between challenges and clarity in the arrangement is indeed a challenge for the arranger as well. Structure is highlighted as a significant factor in the process and the attitude to the study is mostly positive. Adversity provides new impetus and inspiration to new ideas and self-confidence grows during the study. In conclusion, a discussion follows about the results of the study in relation to selected literature and the phenomenological perspective.

Full textThe purpose of the present study is to examine my own learning process with a modern opera aria. The study is based on a design theoretical perspective on learning with focus on the concepts design, multimodality and semiotic resources. The process went on for three weeks during the autumn 2017 with a total of 14 practising sessions. To be able to document the learning process during these practising sessions, the methods video observation and logbook were used. The design of the learning process is described in the result by two different themes; Creatively unstructured and The endeavour to the overall experience. The result also shows that physical resources were used during the learning process to embody musical parameters, while material resources became a complement to the physical resources in a concrete way. In the last section, the result is discussed relative to a design theoretical perspective on learning and to previous research on practise and rehearsal methods. Some aspects are the meaning of a sounding example to listen to relative to the aspect of the overall experience, and the creatively unstructured learning process and its impact on the practice progression.
