A group of 22 independent southeastern U.S. logging contractors provided 44 contractor-years of detailed cost and production information. Information was collected on demographics, operational characteristics, and business strategies for the participants. Precipitation was statistically proven to not be a good predictor of production, accounting for 2% of the weekly variation. High production through periods of favorable harvesting did not occur. Loggers contracting for the same mill in the same general area had higher than average production in the winter months and lower than average p

The objective of this research was to analyze the workers’ compensation insurance system for the logging industry in the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Approximately 72 percent of the workers’ compensation insurance rate is composed of loss components and components utilized to update and predict future losses of the year (time period) that the manual rate is in effect. Selective timber harvesting in tropical rain forests is becoming increasingly common and plays an important role in integrating economic development needs and conservation goals. Understanding the effects of logging on forest ecosystems can contribute to the design of sustainable management techniques and minimise the negative effects of timber harvesting on wildlife. This study compares the morphology of coastal, gravel-bed streams in two unlogged and two logged Queen Charlotte Islands watersheds. This comparison quantifies the influence of logging and related activities on channel morphology and, consequently, the fresh water physical habitat of salmonids. Further, it provides a basis upon which to determine habitat rehabilitation criteria for disturbed channels. Pools and riffles are detailed because: a) they reflect changes in sediment supply; b) they are important fish habitats, and; c) their general character has been documented in previously publishe

Both fluvial and debris flow transport of sediment occur in gullies, and the amount of fluvial transport of sediment which occurs will affect the magnitude of a subsequent debris flow. Coarse woody debris (CWD) may affect the storage and transfer of sediment in the gully channel, and logging can affect the supply and type of CWD.
