Abstract In the ancient world most educated people, including medical men and lawyers, studied some elementary logic. The formal study began in Plato's Academy, and can be traced through to Boethius, and so into the Middle Ages. Many works seem to have been written to be memorized by students. Evidence comes, among others, from Aristotle, Apuleius, and Galen, and from a variety of anonymous sources, including some papyri. The views of the Peripatetics and the Stoics, originally different, coalesced, and later handbooks covered both at an elementary level. The origin of the concept of a syllogistic mood is obscure: it may have existed for some time before appearing first in Apuleius.

Abstract:
Since the 1980s, archaeologists have challenged the idea that prehistoric actions were guided primarily by practicality and expedience. Rubbish disposal, a superficially mundane activity, provides a critical case for exploring the depth to which cultural logics penetrate. Ethnoarchaeological research on discard behaviour in Mesoamerican houselots has modelled rubbish disposal as a matter of expedience predictable by factors such as density of settlement and length of occupation. At the Classic period site of Chunchucmil, Yucatan, such models based on practical reason succeed only partly in predicting the distribution of rubbish. Ethnographic and ethnohistorical accounts of rubbish in Mesoamerica suggest that fully understanding its distribution requires attention to cultural logics. At Chunchucmil, ancient Maya cosmology explains the location of dumps within households. Thus, both practical and cultural logics structured discard. The case of Maya subsistence farming suggests that practical logic is subsumed by cultural logic, rather than the two logics conflicting. These findings show how broadly-held beliefs and predispositions are instantiated and reproduced in daily life.

Abstract:
The author of this paper argues that ancient Chinese thinkers practiced an alternative logic that is significantly different from Aristotelian logic. The paper has two objectives: 1) to clarify what Chinese logic looks like; 2) to re-evaluate the wisdom in classic texts with a clear understanding of Chinese logic. The author uses two major approaches in her reasoning: an etymological approach and logic of sets. An etymological study shows that Chinese pictographic characters were created according to sets - the collections of characters. The author examines how Chinese pictographic language shapes ancient Chinese thinkers’ thinking patterns and provides evidence that the habit of thinking in sets could naturally shape a practice of a primary logic of sets. Borrowing some expressions and symbols from modern Set Theory, the author demonstrates how the logic of sets was practiced by Gongsun Longzi, Confucius, Zhuangzi, as well as Chinese mathematicians in their teachings and reasoning. A theory of sets provides help with a much better understanding about reasoning methods in ancient Chinese thinkers’ minds, so that one can evaluate their wisdom fairly. Understanding Chinese logic as it is provides a fruitful opening for new research in Comparative Philosophy. Keywords: set, etymology, membership, Chinese logic, and comparative philosophy

Abstract:
In his influential discussion of early Christian ascetic renunciation, Peter Brown announced that “Christian men used women ‘to think with’ in order to verbalize their own nagging concern with the stance that the Church should take with the world.” Brown's statement encapsulates the particular difficulties facing students of the history of women in the early Christian period. The most basic difficulty is that we possess very few texts by women from this period until well into the Middle Ages. We can point to the diary of the third-century martyr Perpetua, the complex and recondite Vergilian and Homeric centos (“stitch-verses”) of the aristocrat Proba and the empress Eudocia, and perhaps one or two other arguable examples. With a dearth of women's own voices, can historians be expected to reconstruct women's lives? This paucity of “first-person” texts is coupled with a more serious theoretical difficulty facing historians of all periods whose main “evidence” consists of literary and rhetorically informed texts. Scholars are much less confident today in our ability to peel back layers of male rhetoric and find the “real” woman concealed underneath. Brown's comment underscores this rhetorical skepticism by asking whether these texts are even “about” women at all. Others following Brown's lead have understood texts that are ostensibly to or about women as concerned primarily with issues of male authority and identity. In Brown's words, women were good “to think with,” but the subject of that “thought” was inevitably male. Despite these technical and theoretical difficulties, however, I do not think we are witnessing the final and absolute erasure of women from ancient Christian history.

Resumo: Nesta tese discuto aspectos da logica de Aristóteles que sao ressaltados por abordagens contemporâneas dos Primeiros Analíticos e que mostram uma teoria mais rica e sutil do que tradicionalmente se entende como sendo a lógica aristotelica. Em especial, abordo teses sobre como devem ser compreendidas as proposições categóricas, o que sao precisamente silogismos, o que sao silogismos perfeitos e quais problemas enfrenta a parte da lógica de Aristoteles que lida com proposicoes modais. Nessa direcao, abordo evidencias textuais para duas concepcoes de proposicao categorica e as dificuldades para coaduna-las com as proposicoes singulares. Alem disso, argumento que silogismos devem ser compreendidos como cadeias de predicacoes e que Aristoteles concebe um sistema logico quando procura justificar quais arranjos entre termos formam de fato tais cadeias. Argumento, tambem, que os silogismos perfeitos sao evidentes nesse sistema nao porque considerados indemonstraveis, mas porque podem ser deduzidos a partir de definicoes das proposicoes categoricas e de certas regras gerais, isto e, de regras aplicaveis nao apenas a um tipo de proposicao categorica. Por fim, apresento as caracteristicas gerais e as dificuldades de uma parte da logica de Aristoteles muito pouco associada a logica aristotelica como tradicionalmente entendida: a silogistica modal
Abstract: The present dissertation discusses aspects of Aristotle's Logic which are enhanced by contemporary approaches to Prior Analytics and display a logical theory richer and subtler than what traditionally is comprehended as being the Aristotelian Logic. My main claims concern how categorical propositions must be understood, what is the exact nature of syllogisms, what is a perfect syllogism, as well as some questions in the part of Aristotelian Logic which deals with modal propositions. From an examination of texts that support two different conceptions of categorical proposition, I discuss the difficulties in adjusting each of them to singular propositions. I also argue that syllogisms must be comprehended as chains of predications and that Aristotle conceives a logical system when he proceeds to justify which terms arrangement does produce chains of the required kind. I also argue that in this system perfect syllogisms must be understood as evident not because they are unproved, but because they are deduced from definitions for categorical propositions and from general rules, i.e. rules not applied just to some categorical propositions. Finally, I discuss general features and problems concerning a part of Aristotle's Logic rarely attached to the Aristotelian Logic as traditionally comprehended: the modal syllogistic

Resumo: A Definição Geral do Silogismo pode ser entendida como consistindo em duas partes de sua descrição de argumentos lógicos: as Condições Inferenciais e a Cláusula Final. Embora essa distinção clássica seja amplamente conhecida, a tradição interpretativa negligencia o papel que a Cláusula Final desempenha na silogística, concentrando-se apenas nas exigências estabelecidas pelas Condições Inferenciais. Tentamos mostrar que essa negligência da Cláusula Final descaracteriza não só a silogística, como também traz resultados indesejáveis para a exegese dos Primeiros Analíticos I. Por causa dessa negligência, tentamos propor uma análise da Cláusula Final e suas consequências para a própria silogística, apresentando-a como critério adicional próprio da Definição Geral do Silogismo e como fio condutor do primeiro livro da obra
Abstract: Aristotle's General Definition of the Syllogism may be taken as consisting of two parts: the Inferential Conditions and the Final Clause. Although this distinction being well known, traditional interpretations neglect the Final Clause and its influence on syllogistic. Instead, the aforementioned tradition focuses on the Inferential Conditions only. We intend to show that this neglect has severe consequences not just on syllogistic but on the whole exegesis of Aristotle's Prior Analytics I. Due to these consequences, our objective is to analyse the General Definition's Final Clause and its consequences on syllogistic. We propose a reading of the Final Clause as an additional criterion for distinguishing some arguments as properly syllogistic ones and as a main theme which connects all parts of the Prior Analytics I into one coherent piece of work

Na Arte Retorica, duas formas podem ser utilizadas para realizar uma demonstracao: o exemplo, considerado por Aristoteles como inducao, e o entimema, com sua forma dedutiva. Trataremos neste trabalho do entimema como um gcorpo h (s.ma)que carregara consigo as provas do discurso. Mostraremos sua estrutura silogistica e dialetica para compreendermos o seu uso. Mas isso nao sera suficiente se nao entendermos tambem as materias primas pelas quais o entimema e nutrido. Essa forma dedutiva, adaptada ao discurso retorico, tirara suas premissas de lugares-comuns a todos os generos do discurso (deliberativo, judicial e epidictico) e lugares especificos a cada um deles. Mas a materia prima que nos interessa e aquela fornecida pelo carater moral (ethos) do orador e das disposicoes criadas por ele nos ouvintes (pathos). Estas sao as provas artisticas (entechnai pistis)que sao fornecidas pelo orador por meio do proprio discurso. Nosso objetivo nesta dissertacao e o de mostrar a estrutura logica do entimema, assim como sua relacao com esses dois tipos de provas.
In theRhetorical Art, there are two ways that can be used to perform a demonstration: the example, considered by Aristotle as induction, and the enthymeme, with its deductive form. We will treat in this work the enthymemeas a ``body´´(s.ma) which carries with it the evidence of speech. We´ll show its syllogistic and dialectic structure in order to understand their use. But it will not be enough unless we also understand the raw materials from which the enthymeme is nourished. This deductive form, adapted to rhetoric discourse, will take their premises from commonplacesbelonging to all genres of discourse (deliberative, judicial and epideictic) and specific to each one. But the raw material that interests us is supplied by the speaker´s moral character (éthos) and by the moods infused by him on the hearers (páthos). Those arethe artistic proofs (éntechnai pístis) provided by the rhetor through speech itself. Our goal in this dissertation is to show the logical structure of the enthymeme and its relationship with these two types of evidence.

Abstract:
There have been recent explosions of interest in two fields: Madhyamaka-Pyrrhonism parallels and Pyrrhonism itself, which seems to have been misunderstood and therefore neglected by the West for the same reasons and in the same ways that Madhyamaka traditionally has often been by the West and the East. Among these recent studies are several demonstrating that grounding in Madhyamaka, for example, reveals and illuminates the import and insights of Pyrrhonean arguments. Furthermore it has been suggested that of all European schools of philosophy Pyrrhonism is the one closest to Buddhism, and especially to Madhyamaka. Indeed Pyrrho is recorded to have studied with philosophers in Taxila, one of the first places where Madhyamaka later flourished, and the place where the founder of Madhyamaka, Nāgārjuna, may have received hitherto concealed texts which became the foundation for his school. In this dissertation I explore just how similar these two philosophical projects were. I systematically treat all the arguments in the Pyrrhonist redactor Sextus Empiricus’ Outlines of Pyrrhonism and Against Dogmatists and compare them to the most similar arguments available in the Madhyamaka treatises and related texts. On this basis, I ask whether the Pyrrhonists and the Buddhists would satisfy each other’s self-identifying criteria, or what characteristics would disqualify either or both in the other’s eyes. I also ask what questions arise from the linguistic and historical evidence for interactions between the Pyrrhonist school and the Madhyamaka school, and how sure we can be of the answers. Did Pyrrho learn Buddhism in Taxila? Was Nāgārjuna a Pyrrhonist? Finally I bring the insights of the living commentarial tradition of Madhyamaka to bear on current scholarly controversies in the field of Sextan Pyrrhonism, and apply the subtleties of interpretation of the latter which have developed in recent scholarship to Madhyamaka and its various difficulties of interpretation, to scrutinize each school under the illumination of the other. With this hopefully illuminated view, I address for example whether Sextus was consistent, whether living Pyrrhonism implies apraxia, whether Pyrrhonism is philosophy at all, and whether Madhyamaka is actually nihilism.

Plus précisément, elle vise à dégager une conception de la contradiction chez un philosophe qui, du point de vue chronologique, précède l’avènement de la syllogistique et de la logique : Platon. À partir de l’examen des dialogues réfutatifs de Platon, il s’agira de mettre en lumière la forme des propositions contradictoires, de déterminer la terminologie et les métaphores utilisées par Platon pour nommer et décrire la contradiction et d’évaluer le contexte dans lequel avait lieu la réflexion platonicienne. L’analyse révélera que Platon se faisait une idée somme toute assez précise de la contradiction logique et qu’il a même eu une influence sur Aristote lorsque ce dernier élabora son célèbre principe de non-contradiction
This thesis examines the notion of contradiction understood in its logical or formal sense. Specifically, it seeks to study that notion in a philosopher who, chronologically speaking, precedes the advent of syllogistic or logic: Plato. Based on an analysis of Plato’s refutative dialogues, this thesis will determine the form given by Plato to contradictory propositions, unveil the terminology and metaphors used by Plato to name and describe contradictions and evaluate the context in which Plato reflected upon contradiction. The analysis will reveal that Plato had a very clear idea of what is a logical contradiction and that he even had an influence on Aristotle when the latter defined his famous principle of non-contradiction

Abstract:
The application of integrated survey techniques and 3D modelling methodologies for Cultural Heritage analysis is now considered a consolidated process, while preserving and suggesting continuous research lines related from one side to the evolution of acquisition and restitution instruments, from the other to the problems linked to the specific case study and the goal of the research. This article describes the analysis of one of the largest and best-preserved gates of Rome, located within the Aurelian walls: Porta San Sebastiano. The original name of this gate was Porta Appia, transformed in the Middle Ages into San Sebastiano from the name of the Christian martyr buried in the Basilica on the Via Appia, located just outside the walls. The current gate aspect is the result of many architectural changes over the centuries, as well as a transformation happened in the twentieth century which has led it to a residential use, a unique example of its kind. Through the integration of different survey techniques, a geometric analysis of the complex building is completed, highlighting the construction complexity and the spatial articulation. A parametric model of a portion of the building is then suggested, aimed at understanding the logic underlying the definition of a HBIM model related to an existing complex artefact. Through an integrated analysis, the aim of the article is to provide an advancement in the knowledge of the specific Cultural Heritage through the integration of complementary methods of analysis and representation.

Abstract:
The study mainly concentrates on the religious policy of Catherine II in the southeast of the Russian Empire. The attitude of the Russian authorities to the external relations of the Qazakhs and the impact of the diplomacy of the Ottoman Empire and Central Asian states on Qazakhs is examined here. The author indicates that such an attitude was dictated by the logic of the Russian-Turkish war of 1787–1791 and its consequences. The research bases on unpublished sources of the Russian State Archive of Ancient Charters (RGADA). In general, the proposed work expands the understanding of the role of religion in politics and diplomacy of the early Modern times, the importance of the Muslim factor for the course of Russia in the East by the end of the 18th century.

Like most historic and cultural cities in China, the historic urban area of JingMen city is facing a typical spatial problem of fragmentation and fuzzification. This study is focused on exploring a method for evaluating the existing values of historic urban area based on spatial prototype. As a built-up relationship of historic city, spatial prototype has habitual structural characteristics and formal modulus. It is the inherent logic and order rules behind the scattered historic environment, providing a clue to understand the spatial characteristics and a basis for guiding the construction and conservation in historic urban areas. Three criteria, the resolution of historical elements, the integrity of historical structure and the renewal potential of associated plots, were selected to construct the assessment system. These three dimensions are linked to the spatial prototype and its constituent elements, as well as the transformation relationship in ancient and present day. The results showed that historic urban areas have changed from a holistic city to different existing types dominated by their historic structure elements. Finally, a constructive conservation strategy should be adopted to enhance the integrity of historic urban area based on the trace of spatial prototype and evaluation results.

Ibn al-Sikkīt (d. 244 AH / 858 AD) considers Abū Yūsuf Yaʿqūb one of the imams and scholars of the Arabic language in the third AH/ ninth century AD, and he was the Kūfī school of thought, and he is one of those involved in controlling the rules of the language and the standards of its correct words, and he has great contributions in confronting the phenomenon of linguistic melody in his age One of his most important printed books that we have received and that deals with the Arabic language is the book Iṣlāḥ alManṭiq, which left an impact on many linguists after him. The book printed with investigation: Aḥmad Muḥammad Shākir and ʿAbd al-Salam Hāron. The research acquires its importance by revealing what distinguished Ibn al-Sikkīt in his linguistic efforts through his material in the book Iṣlāḥ al-Manṭiq It also contributes to understanding the prevailing linguistic situation in his time. In his dictionary, that is in controlling the linguistic morphology and Language error. The research monitors the issue of ancient Arab grammarians dealing with manifestations of linguistic weakness and Language error in the era of Ibn al-Sikkīt through his contributions in that, and divides the research into an introduction that reviews Ibn al- Sikkīt translation and definition of his linguistic books, then the research presents a set of issues that Ibn al- Sikkīt dealt with in his book Reform of Logic, all the way to the rules that he adopted in it, then the research concludes with a brief conclusion that presents its most prominent conclusions

A Digital representation of Euryalus fortress: a historical interpretive studyIt is clear that concepts and cognitive processes aimed at putting forward fortified systems in their relation with the territory and with the surrounding landscape, establish inextricably interwoven “interests” and a consequent osmotic hysteresis between their emergence and disappearance into the deepest part of the earth. The logic behind the defensive structures of Euryalus fortress is particularly interesting. The fortress designed during the Greek period and located on the top of Epipolae hill, represented a strategic fortification for the city’s defence. Therefore, it is reasonable to think about a sequence of emerging or disappearing empty spaces; a semantic vacuum to be filled with logical-subjective interpretations pertaining to those who visit the place. The conceptual framework provides knowledge and documentation meant as indispensable supporting instruments to understand Dionysius I and Archimedes’ thoughts where the integration of people and environment forms the basis of the close iterative connection among nature, artifice and landscape. The research takes this direction implementing innovative technological systems trying to go beyond in order to achieve virtual reconstruction processes, even if partial, of the fortress. Survey, thus, can be applied as an instrument for the knowledge of historical heritage which once converted into digital heritage is a support for the reconstruction of lost ancient scenarios. Actually, the implementation of innovative systems allows an easy-to-use data viewing which supports the interpretive phase, the archiving, consultation and dissemination of survey products. In particular, the survey of the fortress with integrated methodologies (both instrumental and photogrammetric) provides not only a fundamental basis for the documentation of the fortress conditions but also provides a basis for the collection of reconstructive hypotheses formulated by researchers who have been involved with the structure so far. Interactions among archaeology, history, geomorphology and technology make history and a past renowned glory come alive with the common spirit of coming up to a strong synergy between the past and the future destiny of the place.

Un conjunto de lecturas intencionadas, arrojadas sobre un antiguo paisaje cordobés, develan las lógicas de ocupación desarrolladas a lo largo de siglos de construcción territorial, que resultan de la combinación de pautas culturales de dominio y explotación del espacio, recursos técnicos disponibles y condiciones que el medio natural impone. De dichos procesos emergen modelos de orden territorial que, como síntesis operativa del trabajo humano acumulado en el territorio, reúnen -en su propia conformación material- las claves de futuros criterios de ordenación. A la manera de estructuras constelares, los modelos de orden expresan una forma de organización espacial y un tipo de ruralidad específicos del Norte de Traslasierra. El objetivo es arribar a un conocimiento profundo de este territorio postergado, evidenciar sus recursos culturales y paisajísticos y, a través de ellos, construir una narrativa del territorio que lo resitúe en el mapa de las regiones cordobesas. A set of intentioned readings made on an ancient Córdoba’s landscape reveal the occupation logics developed over centuries of territorial construction. These logics result from the combination of cultural ways of domination and exploitation of space, technical resources available and the natural landscape conditions imposed. From these processes, models of territorial order emerge as operational synthesis from the accumulation of human labor in the territory, gathering -in their own material structure- the key for future planning criteria. Just like constellation structures, order models express a form of spatial organization and some type of rurality specific from Northern Trasla sierra. The aim is to arrive at a deep understanding of this postponed territory, show its cultural and natural resources and, through those, build a territorial narrative that places them back on the map of Córdoba’s regions.

Abstract:
Sabbioneta is one of the few new Italian cities created in the 16th century. Founded by Vespasiano Gonzaga (1531-1591) between 1560 and 1570, it brings together many of the aspects that will characterize the post-16th century urban development in Italy, in the Mediterranean countries, and in Europe. The new bastioned defensive systems, created after the invention of firearms based on the scientific logics of "military engineers", a professional category which emerged at that time, increasingly spread in the abovementioned countries. Such defensive technique introduced an innovative configuration of the urban structure compared to the ancient one, which was before concentrated on central places such as the square, the cathedral and the municipal buildings. The new defensive system, with its ramparts, bastions and moats was located at the border of the city, distant from central places and became so important as to radically change the shape and plan of the city. The new urban geometries could even evoke the pure, simple and regular shapes of the ideal cities conceived by utopian philosophers, which were generally represented as central forms, and symbolic expressions of Thomas More’s Utopia perfect society. But this historical reference just remains a theoretical one. Sabbioneta and other fortified cities in the Mediterranean world, like Tripoli’s Medina after the 16th century Spanish military intervention, are the expression of a new view of the city, in which the defensive aspect constitutes the dominant character due to the revolution of firearms.
