Palacios González, Daniel. Making Monuments from Mass Graves in Contemporary Spain. Amsterdam University Press, 2024. https://doi.org/10.5117/9789048560134.

Full text
Abstract:
This book narrates how, beginning in 1936, bodies buried in mass graves during the Spanish War and subsequent dictatorship were turned into monuments. The book describes how the production of monuments evolved and what forms this process and these monuments took; it examines how the monuments were incorporated into society and used to influence public opinion; and it argues that this process was not simply based on the formal logic of tradition but instead reflected a conscious plan with a specific and rational end goal. As such, this book puts forward the idea that the monument as a material object became an expression of the historical consciousness of its producers, relating how different actors communicated their memories into meaningful gestures while limited by the material reality of integrating the bodies into a novel artefact. Finally, it contends that the people creating these monuments did not just bury their dead according to a funerary tradition but also sought to influence society.

Soriano, Cheryll Ruth, and Earvin Charles Cabalquinto. Philippine Digital Cultures. Amsterdam University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463722445.

Abstract:
Social media platforms have been pivotal in redefining the conduct of contemporary society. Amid the proliferation of a range of new and ubiquitous online platforms, YouTube, a video-based platform, remains a key driver in the democratisation of creative, playful, vernacular, intimate, as well as political expressions. As a critical node of contemporary communication and digital cultures, its steady uptake and appropriation in a social media-savvy nation such as the Philippines requires a critical examination of its role in the continued reconstruction of identities, communities, and broader social institutions. This book closely analyses the diverse content and practices of amateur Filipino YouTubers, exposing and problematising the dynamics of brokering the contested aspirational logics of beauty and selfhood, interracial relationships, world-class labour, and progressive governance in a digital sphere. Ultimately, Philippine Digital Cultures: Brokerage Dynamics on YouTube offers a fresh, compelling, and nuanced account of YouTube as an important site for the mediation of culture, economy, and politics in Philippine postcolonial modernity amid rapid economic globalisation and digitalisation.

Abstract:
From the virulence of fake news to the rise of psychographic profiling, emotion has become ascendant. The new frontier of capitalization is not outward, but inward—the inner life of affect and emotion, desire and disposition. This book lays that new reality out with a series of close case studies. A new set of technologies are emerging, from facial coding to affective computing, that attempt to render the emotional into the machine-readable. At the same time, social media and smart home devices are becoming empathic, attempting to draw out our affective participation and elicit our emotional expression. In these encounters with the medial and the technical, the emotional is remade. Combining a close analysis of contemporary technologies such as Affectiva, Facebook, and Alexa with critical media theory, Logic of Feeling: Technology’s Quest to Capitalize Emotion examines how the quest to operationalize this inner life begins to reconfigure feeling itself.

Steane, Andrew. Logic and Knowledge: The Babel Fallacy. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198824589.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
An error of logic is described, and dubbed the Babel Fallacy. This is the fallacy of claiming that one already knows that a given low-level language is adequate to support the expression of a given high-level or collective phenomenon, when this has not been shown to be the case. Examples from physics, linguistics, economics, mathematics, and computer science are given. The same reasoning applies to biology. In the context of science, the Babel fallacy is the fallacy of claiming to know the complete truth about the physical nature of anything.

Fine, Kit. Vagueness. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197514955.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The book is about the problem of vagueness. It begins by discussing some of the existing views on vagueness and then explains why they have not been thought to be satisfactory. It then outlines a new account of vagueness, based on the general idea that vagueness is a global rather than a local phenomenon. In other words, the vagueness of an expression or object is not an intrinsic feature of the object or an expression but a matter of how it relates to other objects and expression. The development of this idea leads to a new semantics and logic for vagueness. The semantics and logic are then applied to a number of issues, including the sorites paradox, the transparency or luminosity of mental states, and personal identity. It is shown that the view allows one to hew to a much more intuitive position on these various issues.
