Abstract:
This master thesis in media and communication studies explores the concept of the smart home, which by various industries within communication, information and energy business alongside property developers is expected to be the model for future living, housing and infrastructure development. Departing from a theoretical framework highlighting media and infrastructure as temporal and spatial phenomena, the analysis shows how the smart home arranges and manages both means of time and space due to its saturation of information technologies in the form of sensors, applications and data visualizations. The result of the study suggests that the smart home could be understood as a logistical medium, although the temporal bias present in the expectations on future living suggests that the purpose of the smart home is to sustain a flow of logistics and capital both over space and over time; the latter in terms of sustainability.

Abstract:
This study introduces logistical media and considers one example of such--radar. Innis (1972; 1951), Mumford (1970; 1934), Carey (1988), Virilio (1997; 1989; 1986) and others are discussed as preparing an understanding of logistical media as subtle but powerful devices of cognitive, social, and political coordination that affect our experience of time and space. Radar is presented as significant because of its progressive-catastrophic potential. Radar was invented for national defense and to remotely survey the earth and its atmosphere, but it also allows new collisions with "others." American radar was primarily developed at the Radiation Laboratory at MIT during the 1940s. Historical objects, principally from the MIT Radiation Laboratory Historian's Office, are arranged and discussed according to Walter Benjamin's (1999) historical method. Benjamin theorized that historical debris can be arranged as a dialectical image or constellation that can momentarily disrupt our sense of chronological progress and denaturalize ideology. Benjamin described this disruption as the interruption of the present with the now. Radar is considered in terms of authoritarian modernity, and as contributing to a politics of distance, speed, angle, movement, and perception. Objects from radar history are marshaled to illuminate radar's pre-history, its use of feedback to identify and coordinate objects, and its susceptibility to error and disruption. Present understandings of the 9/11 attacks are challenged by the now of these objects, and an understanding of logistical media is furthered.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the cultural history of microfilm and microphotography during the period 1900–1970, thus contributing to the broader field of research on the history of 20th century information management in the era before digital technology. The aim is to study how microfilm repeatedly, in various contexts and over time, was described and perceived as a new medium. To this end the book examines and analyses the plans, dreams and visionary prognostics put forth by various historical actors with an interest in microfilm – using case studies situated at different junctures and periods (1904–1910, 1937, 1940–1952, 1950–1970), while also ranging geographically from the United States to Europe and Sweden. From a theoretical and methodological point of view the thesis seeks to understand the historical formation of microfilm by developing the notions of configuration and reconfiguration, employing a perspective which emphasizes the continuous ontological interplay and interdependence of materiality and discourse in the formation of media. Thus, at the empirical level, the analysis takes into account realized technological materialities as well as unrealized imaginary articulations, dreams and expectations integral to the configuration of microfilm within a broader culture of paperwork. As a result of this approach the study draws on scientific texts and articles in journals, as well as newspaper reports, commercial messages, ads, handbooks and various archival documents. The analysis reveals a close relationship between microfilm and experiences of entropy connected to information systems based on paper and paperwork. It is argued that, within the dreams and plans that are studied, the most important function of microfilm was to regulate noise, decay and disorder associated with the materiality of paper – through ordering, operating on and modifying the capacities of paper media. It is also noted that microfilm was perceived and articulated as a new medium over a long period of time, even though very little changed at the technological level. From a historiographical point of view, it is thus argued, microfilm can be characterized as a simultaneously continuous and discontinuous phenomenon, taking part in a history that unfolded through repetitions, returns and non-linear steps rather than along an uninterrupted, linear path.

Abstract:
Performance measurement is an important concern that has recently attracted much attention in the logistics area from both practitioners and academics. The performance measurement of logistics companies is based upon diverse performance indicators. However, to date, limited attention has been paid to the performance measurement of logistics companies and, also, performance measurement processes have become more complex for logistics companies due to the existence of numerous performance indicators. In this regard, the way in which decision makers in logistics companies deal with some vaguenesses, such as deciding on the most important indicators holistically and determining interrelationships between performance indicators, has remained an issue that needs to be resolved. This study, therefore, aims to offer a comprehensive decision model for identifying the key logistics performance indicators and determining the interrelationships among these indicators from logisticians’ perspective. In line with this purpose, the research first presents a stakeholder-based Balanced Scorecard (BSC) model which provides a balanced view by including financial and non-financial performance indicators and a comprehensive approach as a response to the major shortcoming of the generic BSC regarding the negligence of various stakeholders. Then, a large number of performance indicators used in logistics are systematically examined under the proposed model, and the key indicators are selected through an online survey conducted in the Turkish logistics industry. Subsequently, since the performance measurement indicators are not independent of each other, it is critical to understand the causal relationships among different indicators. In such cases, group decision making techniques are capable of modelling such complexities. After a systematic comparison of these techniques, a realistic and easy-to-follow multi-criteria decision making technique, the Analytic Network Process (ANP), is revealed as a suitably powerful method to determine the interrelationships among the indicators. Additionally, a case study approach based on the data obtained from three logistics companies is used to illustrate both the applicability of the model and the practicality of the ANP application. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the results about the case companies is also analysed with several relevant ‘what-if’ scenarios. Thus, real-life practices of three case companies are investigated with the proposed approach. Consequently, this research proposes the BSC-ANP integration which provides a novel way and in-depth understanding to evaluate logistics performance indicators for the competitiveness of logistics companies. Thus, in order to address the aforementioned vaguenesses, the proposed model in this study identifies key performance indicators with the consideration of various stakeholders in the logistics industry to decide on the most important indicators, and evaluates the interrelationships among the indicators by using the ANP. The results of the study show that the educated employee (15.61%) is the most important indicator for the competitiveness of logistics companies and four prominent indicators (educated employee, managerial skills, cost, and profitability) need to be primarily considered by logistics companies. In this way, with this integration, not only the performance indicators in logistics, but also different stakeholders of logistics companies are assessed by the ANP method. This means that the results of this research are not only useful for helping logistics companies to decide which indicators should be focused on to become more competitive, but also can be used as a reference model by different stakeholders in their decision-making processes in order to select the best logistics provider.

Práticas de terceirizações logísticas vêm sendo largamente utilizadas por empresas do Brasil e do mundo. A terceirização logística no Brasil já é um fato, e as empresas já perceberam as vantagens de terceirizar as atividades que não fazem parte de suas atividades fim para outras empresas especialistas em qualquer serviço logístico, os operadores logísticos. Metas como redução de custos, melhorias no nível de serviço e redução de ativos na operação contribuem para a prática da terceirização, tornando mais competitivas as empresas contratadoras de serviços. Dentro desse contexto, este trabalho descreve e analisa um estudo de caso de seleção e contratação de um prestador de serviços logísticos (PSL) para a Infoglobo, que é uma das principais empresas de mídia impressa do Brasil. O objetivo principal desta dissertação é analisar o processo de seleção e contratação de um prestador de serviços logísticos, de acordo com a literatura pesquisada. As conclusões indicam que a Infoglobo teve um processo de seleção e contratação estruturado, e segue a tendência da literatura atual de terceirização logística em relação aos motivadores da terceirização, atributos desejados dos PSLs, classificação e segmentação dos terceiros, fontes de informação para o processo seletivo, acordos de nível de serviço, compartilhamento de ganhos e relacionamento entre contratante e contratado.
Outsourcing logistics practices have being widely used for Brazilian and world companies. The outsourcing logistics in Brazil is already a fact, and the enterprises have realized the advantages of outsourcing for 3PL specialists of activities that do not belong to the scope of its own core business. Goals such as cost reduction, service level improvements, operation assets reduction contribute for outsourcing practices, making the enterprises more competitive. Given this context, the case study examined in this dissertation describes and analyzes a selection and hiring practices of third-party logistics for Infoglobo, one of the main newspapers media companies in Brazil. The main objective of this dissertation is to analyze the 3PL outsour cing process in accordance with the surveyed literature. The study has enabled us to identify that Infoglobo had a structured outsourcing process, and followed the trend of the current outsourcing literature, specially in topics such as outsourcing motivations, 3PL`s desired attributes, 3PL`s classification and segmentation, sources of information, service level agreement, gainsharing and relationship between the 3PL and Infoglobo.

Abstract:
Information and communication technology (ICT) had a huge impact on the healthcare services and the Internet plays an important role in forming patients’ attitudes towards health related services. Although the Internet mentioned as one of the major contributors in todays’ Information Overload (IO), common notion is that healthcare sector has been remained immune of IO effects. Throughout an action research, this study showed that IO has significant impact on treatment sessions of patients suffering from chronicle mental disorders in two ways. Firstly, patients’ acquired information from the Internet bombards physician in the treatment sessions, which eventually slows down the treatment process. Secondly, protocols and administrative procedures are subject to change, which leads to frustrating relearning cycles due to the huge amount of information attaching to them. Also, physicians have a tendency to keep themselves updated about new achievements in their field, which adds to the IO problem. In an attempt to enhance the situation an application model purposed in the second half of this research, which uses social web as a platform to provide a service based on Information Logistics (IL) principles to deal with the problem of IO.

The paper reports findings from a FAIR principles-based research project dedicated to investigating how cross-field research between the DH and Sociotechnical Sustainable Transport Research could help to enhance the holistic understanding of sociotechnical low-carbon transport transitions.  Using the hashtag search queries #sustainabletransport and #sustainablemobility, 33,121 Tweets (2013-2021) and 8,089 Instagram images including captions (2017/2018-2021) were mined using Python scripts. Quantitative text and sentiment analyses were applied to the Tweets and image captions. Additionally, an automated image analysis using the Instagram dataset was conducted. Synthesized results formed the base for the cross-platform analysis comprising: 1) hot topics, 2) mentioned users, 3) sentiment, 4) co-hashtags. Data were visualized via Tableau, Excel, RAWGraphs, and Bubbl.us. Whereas electromobility, one of Holden et al.’s Grand Narratives for sustainable mobility, has been significantly present in the digital discourse on both platforms (especially Instagram), #sustainabletransport has been closely associated with active transport, especially bicycling, and #sustainablemobility with the electromobility theme. The study has demonstrated the investigative potentials of cross-field cross-platform social media analysis studies and ultimately DH to enhance the understanding of sociotechnical low-carbon transport transitions. Drawing on core results, the paper also suggests an adapted version of the Geelsean Multi-Level Perspective.

O presente trabalho contextualiza a evolução do sistema logístico ao longo do tempo até as redes de abastecimento atuais, sob a ótica do Supply Chain Management - SCM, oferecendo uma revisão da literatura disponível na questão da flexibilidade do sistema logístico. Em linhas gerais, o principal propósito é apresentar o fenômeno da Flexibilidade Logística como competência necessária a fim de garantir vantagens competitivas para ampliar a competitividade organizacional. As competências logísticas desejadas pelos clientes, e vistas como essenciais pelas companhias de logística, são apresentadas juntamente à Flexibilidade do processo como foco central. Uma nova abordagem dessa flexibilidade do sistema logístico entra em cena e é proposta uma nova tipologia taxionômica e um modelo de avaliação para a performance deste sistema. O modelo é estabelecido sobre dois aspectos principais: interno ou externo, e temporal ou espacial, sendo que a flexibilidade interna refere-se à eficiência enquanto a externa à eficácia e, a flexibilidade sistêmica à efetividade logística. O modelo mostra que a flexibilidade pode ser tanto estrutural quanto processual, e que precisa de forte suporte de TI. Além disso, este trabalho trata dos passos necessários para o desenho de um sistema de flexibilidade logística eficaz.

O presente trabalho apresenta um modelo para a automação de processos através de ferramentas de workflow, visando gerenciar e suportar as atividades produtivas integrando fornecedores, empresas, clientes primários, secundários e terciários. O objetivo deste modelo é de proporcionar aos integrantes da cadeia de suprimentos vantagens em valor agregado, custos e comunicação eficiente. As empresas devem pensar em como perpetuarem-se, já que seu horizonte deve ser a eternidade. Para tanto, é necessário que elas desenvolvam e aperfeiçõem seus processos e métodos. Pelo estudo aplicaçãodo modelo concluiu-se que as empresas devam direcionar sua cultura organizacional a processos e que estes sejam documentados e compartilhados com fornecedores e clientes, acrescentando a eles um diferencial competitivo, tornando a comunicação eficiente e eficaz com os integrantes da cadeia de valor. Desta forma, fortalecendo-se e criando novas formas de competir, perpetuando-se. Baseado neste objetivo, estabeleceu-se um modelo de desenho de automação de processo composto por 11 etapas.

Abstract:
Recently, there has been a surge in the research and application of â Green energyâ in the United States. This has been driven by the following three objectives: (1) to reduce the nationâ s reliance on foreign oil, (2) to mitigate emission of greenhouse gas, and (3) to create an economic stimulus within the United States. Switchgrass is the biomass of choice for the Southeastern United States. In this dissertation, we address a feedstock logistics problem associated with the delivery of switchgrass for conversion into biofuel. In order to satisfy the continual demand of biomass at a bioenergy plant, production fields within a 48-km radius of its location are assumed to be attracted into production. The bioenergy plant is expected to receive as many as 50-400 loads of biomass per day. As a result, an industrialized transportation system must be introduced as early as possible in order to remove bottlenecks and reduce the total system cost. Additionally, we assume locating multiple bioenergy plants within a given region for the production of biofuel. We develop mixed integer programming formulations for the feedstock logistics problem that we address and for some related problems, and we solve them either through the use of decomposition-based methods or directly through the use of CPLEX 12.1.0. The feedstock logistics problem that we address spans the entire system-from the growing of switchgrass to the transporting of bio-crude oil, a high energy density intermediate product, to a refinery for conversion into a final product. To facilitate understanding, we present the reader with a case study that includes a preliminary cost analysis of a real-life-based instance in order to provide the reader appropriate insights of the logistics system before applying optimization techniques for its solution. First, we consider the benefits of active versus passive ownership of the production fields. This is followed by a discussion on the selection of baler type, and then, a discussion of contracts between various business entities. The advantages of storing biomass at a satellite storage location (SSL) and interactions between the operations performed at the production field with those performed at the storage locations are then established. We also provide a detailed description of the operations performed at a SSL. Three potential equipment options are presented for transporting biomass from the SSLs to a utilization point, defined in this study as a Bio-crude Plant (BcP). The details of the entire logistics chain are presented in order to highlight the need for making decisions in view of the entire chain rather than basing them on its segments. We model the feedstock logistics problem as a combination of a 2-level facility location-allocation problem and a multiple traveling salesmen problem (mATSP). The 2-level facility location-allocation problem pertains to the allocation of production fields to SSLs and SSLs to one of the multiple bioenergy plants. The mATSP arises because of the need for scheduling unloading operations at the SSLs. To this end, we provide a detailed study of 13 formulations of the mATSP and their reformulations as ATSPs. First, we assume that the SSLs are always full, regardless of when they are scheduled to be unloaded. We, then, relax this assumption by providing precedence constraints on the availability of the SSLs. This precedence is defined in two different ways and, is then, effectively modeled utilizing all the formulations for the mATSP and ATSP. Given the location of a BcP for the conversion of biomass to bio-crude oil, we develop a feedstock logistics system that relies on the use of SSLs for temporary storage and loading of round bales. Three equipment systems are considered for handling biomass at the SSLs, and they are either placed permanently or are mobile, and thereby, travel from one SSL to another. We use a mathematical programming-based approach to determine SSLs and equipment routes in order to minimize the total cost incurred. The mathematical program is applied to a real-life production region in South-central Virginia (Gretna, VA), and it clearly reveals the benefits of using SSLs as a part of the logistics system. Finally, we provide a sensitivity analysis on the input parameters that we used. This analysis highlights the key cost factors in the model, and it emphasizes areas where biggest gains can be achieved for further cost reduction. For a more general scenario, where multiple BcPs have to be located, we use a nested Bendersâ decomposition-based method. First, we prove the validity of using this method. We, then, employ this method for the solution of a potential real-life instance. Moreover, we successfully solve problems that are more than an order of magnitude larger than those solved directly by CPLEX 12.1.0. Finally, we develop a Bendersâ decomposition-based method for the solution of a problem that gives rise to a binary sub-problem. The difficulty arises because of the sub-problem being an integer program for which the dual solution is not readily available. Our approach consists of first solving the integer sub-problem, and then, generating the convex hull at the optimal integer point. We illustrate this approach for an instance for which such a convex hull is readily available, but otherwise, it is too expensive to generate for the entire problem. This special instance is the solution of the mATSP (using Bendersâ decomposition) for which each of the sub-problems is an ATSP. The convex hull for the ATSP is given by the Dantzig, Fulkerson, and Johnson constraints. These constraints at a given integer solution point are only polynomial in number. With the inclusion of these constraints, a linear programming solution and its corresponding dual solution can now be obtained at the optimal integer points. We have proven the validity of using this method. However, the success of our algorithm is limited because of a large number of integer problems that must be solved at every iteration. While the algorithm is theoretically promising, the advantages of the decomposition do not seem to outweigh the additional cost resulting from solving a larger number of decomposed problems.

La tesis doctoral “La logística del ejército romano en la república media (264-188 a.C.)” plantea como objetivo principal ofrecer una visión de conjunto de la logística romana desde la Primera Guerra Púnica (264 a.C.) hasta la Paz de Apamea (188 a.C.), así como del coste e impacto en las estructuras socioeconómicas de los territorios donde tuvo lugar y de la propia Roma. A nivel cronológico el trabajo cuenta con unos límites claramente definidos. El punto de partida es el inicio de la expansión de Roma fuera de la península ibérica a raíz de la Primera Guerra Púnica. El punto final del trabajo está marcado por la Paz de Apamea. Este tratado de paz entre la monarquía seleucida y Roma marca la confirmación de Roma como potencia hegemónica a escala mediterránea. A nivel geográfico el ámbito de estudio del trabajo se extiende a toda la zona mediterránea. Para llevar a cabo este estudio hemos decidido dividir nuestro trabajo en cinco capítulos. El primer capítulo plantea un recorrido historiográfico de la historia militar y la logística del ejército romano. Partiendo de diversos de los problemas que se han apuntado en el repaso historiográfico, en el segundo capítulo planteamos una revisión de los datos con los que contamos para el estudio de la logística. El tercer capítulo se centra en definir qué elementos formaban parte de la logística del ejército romano en base a las evidencias con las que contamos a nivel escrito y arqueológico. En el cuarto capítulo plantea un estudio de los mecanismos que empleaba Roma como estado y los ejércitos para la obtención y gestión de los recursos. En el último capítulo planteamos cinco estudios de caso. En el primero de ellos nos centramos en el asedio de Agrigento y la problemática que planteó para la logística romana. En el segundo caso de estudio analizamos el despliegue de las fuerzas romanas del 225 a.C. Éste se ha planteado como una respuesta a las acciones de Cartago. Por esta razón, llevamos a cabo una contraposición entre la disposición de ese año y los del año 218 a.C. En el tercer caso nos centramos en la logística de los ejércitos romanos durante la Segunda Guerra Púnica en la península ibérica tomando como base la información obtenida del yacimiento de La Palma. En cuarto lugar, analizamos la importancia del estrés bélico sobre Roma a raíz del final de la Segunda Guerra Púnica y el inicio de la Segunda Guerra Macedónica. Finalmente, el último caso de estudio, se corresponde con la importancia que tuvo el saqueo dentro de la logística de Vulso en Asia Menor en el 189 a.C. El trabajo realizado aporta una revisión profunda de los datos con los que contamos sobre la logística de época republicana. De este modo, una de las principales conclusiones que se extrae es la enorme complejidad de la logística y el gran impacto que tuvo tanto para el estado como para la zona donde actuaba el ejército. Partiendo de esta premisa, convienen destacar varios puntos clave en las aportaciones de este trabajo. En primer lugar, la complejidad que queda patente a raíz del apartado 3 implica que la logística debe ser considerada como un elemento básico en la definición de las estrategias y organización tanto de las campañas como territorios por parte de Roma. Si bien por factores historiográficos ha contado con un papel secundario, creemos que a raíz de nuestro trabajo debe empezar a gozar de mayor protagonismo. En segundo lugar, la variedad de recursos implican diferentes métodos de captación. De este modo, no existe un patrón fijo sobre la gestión de los recursos ni un método predominante para obtener abastecimientos. Por consiguiente, asignarle un rol preponderante a elementos como el saqueo plantea problemas. Desde nuestro trabajo planteamos una revisión de las diferentes prácticas y su interrelación con aspectos políticos, tácticos y logísticos. En tercer lugar, y como apunte final, hay que resaltar el carácter temporal de la logística. Las estructuras, métodos de obtención de recursos e incluso las rutas están sujetas a fuertes variaciones y cambios en función de las demandas estratégicas.
“La logística del ejército romano en la república media (264-188 a.C.)” (The logistics of the roman army during the Middle Republic (264-188 BC) offers an overview of the logistics of the roman army from the First Punic War (264 BC) to the Apamea Treaty (188 BC), as well as a study concerning the impact in the economical and social structures of the areas and Rome during this period. Our research is framed within defined chronological boundaries. The starting point is marked by the expansion of Rome outside the Italian Peninsula as consequence of the First Punic War. The ending point of our research is defined by the Treaty of Apamea. This treaty between the Seleucid monarchy and Rome signals the moment Rome became a hegemonic power in the Mediterranean. The geographical area of this work encompasses all the Mediterranean. To develop our research aims we divided our study in five chapters. The first chapter offer a survey of the development of the military history and the study of roman logistics, highlighting the most relevant historiographical problems. The second one examines the evidences available and the issues concerning the acquisition, management and consumption. The third chapter focuses on defining what elements were supplied and required by the army and the problems they posed. In the final chapter we develop five study cases which deal with a specific problem highlighted in the previous chapters.

This report presents an optimization of the allocation of maintenance resources for Air Navigation Service (ANS) equipment of which LFV is responsible for the maintenance. The purpose the authors have worked after is to research ways of minimizing travelling time linked to maintenance visits for ANS equipment, this report includes the suggestions where the maintenance facilities should be placed in order to minimize the total travelling time. The report describes the problem background and presents the customer, LFV. It includes a chapter on some of the theories used for facility location and routing, and also presents methods for reducing the total travelling time used for maintenance visits annually. The authors have worked with a given set of airports in Sweden. Information about the general work with maintenance as well as the annual demand of maintenance, including the frequency of visits, for each airport included in this project was received by Pär Oberger, the task expert and contact at LFV for this report. A model for facility location based on the p-median model have been created and used when solving the problem, it was written in AMPL and solved with the CPLEX solver. The model was modified with two additional constraints regulating the minimum annual working time and the maximum distance for one-way travelling. The authors deems that a solution with five facilities is better since the benefit of additional facilities, in term of lower total distance, do not compensate for the assumed cost of establishing them.

Este estudo teve como objetivo propor um modelo de referência sobre os ciclos de importação em relação ao tempo para as PMEs brasileiras. Esta pesquisa é relevante pela proposta da análise do tempo e frequencia de ciclos de importação, como componente para o processo de tomada de decisão logística, em relação às importações e de competitividade interna. O modelo proposto aborda as diferentes possibilidades de realizar o ciclo de importações, considerando o fator tempo como indicador de desempenho e estabelece uma Matriz inicial referência para importação, que sinaliza todos os procedimentos logísticos, desde o inicio da negociação internacional até o recebimento da mercadoria na aduana brasileira. A partir desta são elaboradas Matrizes de importação específicas para importações originárias de três países: China, Argentina e Estados Unidos da América e de cada um dos países estudados. Visa verificar a adequabilidade deste modelo na prática. Realizou-se a análise de três empresas brasileiras importadoras de produtos cosméticos. Os resultados desta pesquisa evidenciam que ao adotar o modelo proposto as pequenas e médias empresas alcançam redução no lead time/ custos, obtendo um índice de melhoria em relação ao ciclo de importação e maior rentabilidade. Utilizou-se a metodologia mista, sendo descritiva-exploratória quanto aos objetivos, combinada em relação á abordagem e bibliográfica quanto à estratégia. Fundamenta o trabalho em sua construção, Christopher (1997), quanto à definição logística, Ballou (2001), em relação à estratégia logística, Bowersox; Closs (2001), com referência à cadeia de suprimentos, Bowersox (1996), sobre os indicadores de desempenho logísticos e as PMEs, Dias; Rodrigues (2004), quanto à internacionalização e importação e Larrañaga (2003), abordando custos internacionais.

Abstract: This study aimed to propose a reference model cycles on import in relation to the time factor for Brazilian SMEs. This research is relevant for the proposed analysis of the time and number of cycles greater import, as the component in the decision making process of logistics on imports and domestic competitiveness. The proposed model addresses the different possibilities of performing the cycle of imports, considering the time factor as an performance indicator of an initial reference for import Matrix, pointing out all the logistical arrangements, since the beginning of international negotiation to the receipt of goods in Brazilian customs. From this Arrays are designed for specific import imports from three countries: China, Argentina and the United States and each of the countries studied. In order to verify the suitability of this model in practice, carried out the analysis of three Brazilian companies importing cosmetics. These results show that adopting the proposed model for small and medium businesses achieve reduction in lead time / logistical costs of obtaining an index improvement over the import cycle and greater profitability. We used a mixed methodology, being as descriptive and exploratory goals combined in thier approach and literature on strategy. The basis of the work in its construction, have the study, Christopher (1997), in defining logistics, Ballou (2001), in relation to logistics strategy, Bowersox; Closs (2001), with reference to the supply chain, Bowersox (1996 ) on the performance indicators and logistics SMEs, Dias; Rodrigues (2004), as the internationalization and import and Larrañaga (2003), addressing international costs.

The news media is an important institution for all democracies. It helps the citizens to keep informed and be able to take part of the public debate, but in recent years the gap between the active and the inactive news consumer has increased. Does it make any difference? In order to contribute to the field, this research paper is to make a quantitative analysis to look at whether people with a high consumption of news from the Swedish mass media differ in their attitude towards the EU. As an ordered logistic regression was not applicable when analyzing the categorical dependent variable, that are measuring attitudes towards the EU, three binary logistic regressions was instead used. The results show that individuals with a high consumption of news from the Swedish mass media have higher odds of having an opinion of a positive attitude toward the EU. The data used are however self provided and voluntary survey data,which contain various biases. The fact that it is only observed and not experimental data makes it impossible to estimate a causal effect, which instead is up to future research.

Neste trabalho estudamos o modelo de regressão logística com erro de medida nas covariáveis. Abordamos as metodologias de estimação de máxima pseudoverossimilhança pelo algoritmo EM-Monte Carlo, calibração da regressão, SIMEX e naïve (ingênuo), método este que ignora o erro de medida. Comparamos os métodos em relação à estimação, através do viés e da raiz do erro quadrático médio, e em relação à predição de novas observações, através das medidas de desempenho sensibilidade, especificidade, verdadeiro preditivo positivo, verdadeiro preditivo negativo, acurácia e estatística de Kolmogorov-Smirnov. Os estudos de simulação evidenciam o melhor desempenho do método de máxima pseudoverossimilhança na estimação. Para as medidas de desempenho na predição não há diferença entre os métodos de estimação. Por fim, utilizamos nossos resultados em dois conjuntos de dados reais de diferentes áreas: área médica, cujo objetivo está na estimação da razão de chances, e área financeira, cujo intuito é a predição de novas observações.
We study the logistic model when explanatory variables are measured with error. Three estimation methods are presented, namely maximum pseudo-likelihood obtained through a Monte Carlo expectation-maximization type algorithm, regression calibration, SIMEX and naïve, which ignores the measurement error. These methods are compared through simulation. From the estimation point of view, we compare the different methods by evaluating their biases and root mean square errors. The predictive quality of the methods is evaluated based on sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, accuracy and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic. The simulation studies show that the best performing method is the maximum pseudo-likelihood method when the objective is to estimate the parameters. There is no difference among the estimation methods for predictive purposes. The results are illustrated in two real data sets from different application areas: medical area, whose goal is the estimation of the odds ratio, and financial area, whose goal is the prediction of new observations.

Este trabalho de monografia mostra a Logística Empresarial e a sua influência no nível de competitividade das empresas frente ao processo de globalização. Enfoque especial é dado ao ramo das empresas de transporte rodoviário de carga que neste novo momento, devem tomar atitudes no sentido de fazer frente à elevada concorrência bem como, procurar atender a uma clientela cada vez mais ciente de seu poder neste jogo complicado que é a economia. Estas atitudes que os empresários do setor de transporte podem adotar, por exemplo, os elevam a uma posição bem distinta da que hoje ocupam. Passam a fornecer além do simples frete, uma série de outros serviços tais como armazenagem, controle, distribuição e muitos outros. Assim, dentro deste contexto, o trabalho é desenvolvido com o objetivo de mostrar de maneira sucinta, a evolução do setor de transportes no Brasil, sua situação atual, bem como apresentar a Logística, seu conceito, evolução e abrangência enfatizando que sua presença é fundamental para as empresas do ramo na busca pelo estabelecimento de vantagens competitivas, uma vez que a sua aplicação dentro de um enfoque sistêmico conduz a empresa a melhores resultados. Antes disto, uma visão do momento atual e a evolução para este estágio, é apresentado. Um objetivo mais específico é a apresentação de um exemplo no qual se estabelecem alguns procedimentos para que principalmente, as empresas de pequeno e médio porte atuantes no mercado, que de acordo com a CNT (Confederação Nacional dos Transportes) representam aproximadamente 95% do total de 12.000 empresas de transporte de carga (ETC), tenham subsídios técnicos para auxiliá-las na tomada de decisões no que tange à sua permanência e melhoria de posicionamento no mercado. Para tanto se apresenta, os principais problemas enfrentado por estas transportadoras e, propõe-se algumas alternativas que permitam a estas, o posicionamento estratégico necessário para atingir as metas acima.

Esta investigación tiene como propósito identificar cuáles son los factores más determinantes para un posible comprador de un auto híbrido en comparación a un auto convencional en Lima Metropolitana, es por esto que se han utilizado herramientas cualitativas y cuantitativas para obtener un resultado; esto permitirá a las marcas de autos saber que factor es más importante para el consumidor y potenciarlo a través de estrategias de marketing directo e indirecto. En el análisis cualitativo desarrollado a través de un focus group se encontraron diferentes afirmaciones y negaciones que son respaldadas a través del análisis cuantitativo con el modelo estadístico logístico binario; en este caso se demostró que todas las variables son importantes para un posible comprador de un auto híbrido; pero unas tienen mayor importancia que otras y esto determinaría que se deben llevar a cabo estrategias que estén relacionadas al precio y diseño del auto; ya que son las variables que obtuvieron mayor importancia en el análisis.
This investigation has as purpose identify which are the factors more important for a possible buyer of a hybrid car in comparison of a conventional car in Lima Metropolitana, that is why qualitative and quantitative tools have been used to get a result; this will allow car brands to know which factor is more important for the consumer and to empower it through direct and indirect marketing strategies. In the qualitative analysis developed through a focus group, different affirmations and negations were found that are supported through quantitative analysis with the statistical binary logistic model; in this case it was shown that all the variables are important for a possible buyer of a hybrid car; but some are more important than others and this would determine that price and design should be the ones that have to have the focus of the strategies because they are the variables that obtained more importance in the statistical analysis.

Uno de los principales problemas que enfrenta un Centro Comercial es la inadecuada Gestión Integral de los residuos sólidos. Los factores que han dado lugar a este problema son el escaso aprovechamiento de los residuos sólidos, una limitada capacitación, sensibilización del tratamiento o reciclaje de los residuos y escaza sinergia integrada entre empleados, encargados y visitantes de un Centro Comercial. Para resolver este problema, se desarrolló una propuesta que utiliza logística inversa y herramientas de calidad para mejorar la inadecuada gestión integral de los residuos sólidos. Así mismo, se desarrolló la simulación de la propuesta con el fin de diseñar un modelo logístico que reduzca el porcentaje de utilización del operario en el cuarto de Acopio de un Centro Comercial y se aproveche eficientemente los residuos sólidos. Este modelo redujo en un 62.70% el porcentaje de utilización del operario del Cuarto de Acopio, mejorando así las condiciones de trabajo y el aprovechamiento sostenible de los residuos sólidos de acuerdo con la Ley 27314 – Ley General de Residuos sólidos- y dando beneficios económicos al Centro Comercial.
One of the main problems that a Shopping Centre face is the inadequate Integral Management of solid waste. The factors that have given rise to this problem are the poor use of solid waste, limited training, awareness and lack of integrated synergy between employees, managers and visitors to a shopping centre. To solve this problem, a proposal was developed using Reverse Logistics and Quality Tools to improve the inadequate Integrated Management of solid waste. Likewise, a simulation of the proposal was developed in order to design a logistics model that would reduce the percentage of use of the operator in the stockroom of a shopping centre and make efficient use of the solid waste. This model reduced by 62.70% the percentage of use of the operator of the Collection Room, thus improving working conditions and the sustainable use of solid waste according to the Law 27314 – General Solid Waste Law - and giving economic benefits to the Shopping Center.

Abstract:
Context: According to Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention, there is an increase in residential burglary crimes by 2% in 2014 compared to 2013and by 19% in the past decade. Law enforcement agencies could only solve three to five percent of crimes reported in 2012. Multiple studies done in the field of crime analysis report that most of the residential burglaries are committed by relatively small number of offenders. Thus, the law enforcement agencies need toinvestigate the possibility of linking crimes into crime series. Objectives: This study presents the computation of a median crime which is the centre most crime in a crime series calculated using the statistical concept of median. This approach is used to calculate the uniqueness of a crime series consisting of linked residential burglaries. The burglaries are characterised using temporal, spatial features and modus operandi. Methods: Quasi experiment with repeated measures is chosen as research method.The burglaries are linked based on their characteristics(features) by building a statistical model using logistic regression algorithm to formulate estimated crime series. The study uses median crime as an approach for computing the uniqueness of linked burglaries. The measure of uniqueness is compared between estimated series and legally verified known series. In addition, the study compares the uniqueness of estimated and known series to randomly selected crimes. The measure of uniqueness is used to know the feasibility of using the formulated estimated series for investigation by the law bodies. Results: Statistical model built for linking crimes achieved an AUC = 0.964,R 2 = 0.770 and Dxy = 0.900 during internal evaluation and achieved AU C =0.916 for predictions on test data set and AUC = 0.85 for predictions on known series data set. The uniqueness measure of estimated series ranges from 0.526to 0.715, and from 0.359 to 0.442 for known series corresponding to differentseries. The uniqueness of randomly selected crimes ranges from 0.522 to 0.726 for estimated series and from 0.636 to 0.743 for known series. The values obtained are analysed and evaluated using Independent two sample t-test, Cohen’s d and kolmogorov-smirnov test. From this analysis, it is evident that the uniqueness measure for estimated series is high compared to the known series and closely matches with randomly selected crimes. The uniqueness of known series is clearly low compared to both the estimated series and randomly selected crimes. Conclusion: The present study concludes that estimated series formulated using the statistical model has high uniqueness measures and needs to be furtherfiltered to be used by the law bodies.

The purpose of hydrologic frequency analysis is to relate magnitude of events with their occurrence frequency based on probability distribution. The generalized probability distributions can be used on the study concerning extreme hydrological events: extreme events, logistics and Pareto. There are several methodologies to estimate probability distributions parameters, however, L-moments are often used due to computational easiness. Reliability of quantiles with high return period can be increased by LH-moments or high orders L-moments. L-moments have been widely studied; however, there is little information about LH-moments on literature, thus, there is a great research requirement on such area. Therefore, in this study, LH-moments were studied under two approaches commonly used in hydrology: (i) local frequency analysis (LFA) and (ii) regional frequency analysis (RFA). Moreover, a database with 227 rainfall stations was set (daily maximum annual), in Paraná State, from 1976 to 2006. LFA was subdivided into two steps: (i) Monte Carlo simulations and (ii) application of results to database. The main result of Monte Carlo simulations was that LH-moments make 0.99 and 0.995 quantiles less biased. Besides, simulations helped on creating an algorithm to perform LFA by generalized distributions. The algorithm was applied to database and enabled an adjustment of 227 studied series. In RFA, the 227stations have been divided into 11 groups and regional growth curves were obtained; while local quantiles were obtained from the regional growth curves. The difference between local quantiles obtained by RFA was quantified with those obtained via LFA. The differences may be approximately 33 mm for return periods of 100 years.
O objetivo da análise de frequência das variáveis hidrológicas é relacionar a magnitude dos eventos com sua frequência de ocorrência por meio do uso de uma distribuição de probabilidade. No estudo de eventos hidrológicos extremos, podem ser usadas as distribuições de probabilidade generalizadas: de eventos extremos, logística e Pareto. Existem diversas metodologias para a estimativa dos parâmetros das distribuições de probabilidade, no entanto, devido às facilidades computacionais, utilizam-se frequentemente os momentos-L. A confiabilidade dos quantis com alto período de retorno pode ser aumentada utilizando os momentos-LH ou momentos-L de altas ordens. Os momentos-L foram amplamente estudados, todavia, os momentos-LH apresentam literatura reduzida, logo, mais pesquisas são necessárias. Portanto, neste estudo, os momentos-LH foram estudados sob duas abordagens comumente utilizadas na hidrologia: (i) Análise de frequência local (AFL) e (ii) Análise de frequência regional (AFR). Além disso, foi montado um banco de dados com 227 estações pluviométricas (máximas diárias anuais), localizadas no Estado do Paraná, no período de 1976 a 2006. A AFL subdividiu-se em duas etapas: (i) Simulações de Monte Carlo e (ii) Aplicação dos resultados ao banco de dados. O principal resultado das simulações de Monte Carlo foi que os momentos-LH tornam os quantis 0,99 e 0,995 menos enviesados. Além disso, as simulações viabilizaram a criação de um algoritmo para realizar a AFL utilizando as distribuições generalizadas. O algoritmo foi aplicado ao banco de dados e possibilitou ajuste das 227 séries estudadas. Na AFR, as 227 estações foram dividas em 11 grupos e foram obtidas as curvas de crescimento regional. Os quantis locais foram obtidos a partir das curvas de crescimento regional. Foi quantificada a diferença entre os quantis locais obtidos via AFL com aqueles obtidos via AFR. As diferenças podem ser de aproximadamente 33 mm para períodos de retorno de 100 anos.

In this work we present a study of the logistic map xn+1 = rxn(1 xn) based on the supertracks, a set of continuous functions of the fixed parameter r recursively generated from the map s critical point Xmax = 1/2. This functions determine some iriternal and externa! boundaries of the orbit diagram of the map and provide information about the dynamics of the orbits. The iritersections of these functions can be periodic points or Misiurewicz points. We analyze the dynamics of the orbit in a particular Misiurewicz point, originated from the first coilision between the unstable fixed point and the chaotic attractor. As inedited results, we present algebraically the Lyapunov exponent and the invariant measure for this fixed parameter s value r. Algebraical orbits from the birth and the death of the famous period 3 window are presented as inedited result too.
Neste trabalho apresentamos um estudo do mapa logístico xn + 1 = rxn(1 xn) através do formalismo de supertracks, um conjunto de funções contínuas do parâmetro fixo r geradas recursivamente a partir do ponto crítico do mapa Xmax = 1/2. Essas funções determinam algumas fronteiras internas e externas no diagrama de bifurcação do mapa e fornecem informações sobre a dinâmica das órbitas. As interseções dessas funções podem ser pontos periódicos ou pontos de Misiurewicz. Analisamos a dinâmica da órbita num ponto de Misiurewicz em particular, originado da primeira colisão do ponto fixo instável com o atrator caótico. Como resultados inéditos, apresentamos de forma algébrica o expoente de Lyapunov e a medida invariante para este valor do parâmetro r. As órhitas algébricas do nascimento e da morte da famosa janela de período 3 são também ineditamente apresentados.

Abstract The optical recording media industry in Taiwan had become the first place in worldwide production, after Sony and Philips developed the optical recording media in the early 90s. Although these Taiwanese optical media companies have dominated around 70% market share, they have been operating with OEM as the main business model without their own brands. All of the famous brands in the world such as Sony, Verbatim, Maxell, Ricoh, Philips, Mitsubishi, and Imation are contacting their production in Taiwan then selling to the globe. Due to the tough price competition in the market, the big brand customers always request the production suppliers to set up the warehouse close to the market to storage the products based on the customers’ forecast in order to smooth their operation and lower the cost as well. However, it is always a challenge for this operation due to the discrepancy between the forecast and real market demand. It also causes a big trouble for the suppliers, who may face the high inventory or shortage from time to time The objective of this study is to take the concept of TOC as basis to discuss the improvement through the operation of PULL management and VMI operation for the supply chain management. The target is to improve the operation based on customers’ forecast in the pass, namely by PUSH method and use the PULL method together with weekly operation instead. In addition, the inventory cost by the end of each month was calculated in order to evaluate the result. It was found that use PULL method combined with weekly operation could reduce the cost of the end inventory and satisfy the customers’ requirements as well.

With the increasing usage of social media platforms, customers’ communication channels are increasing into various fields. Thus, logistics industries have a revolutionarily ways to interact with customers. Social media implementation is not only for B2C context, but it is also important in the B2B context. However, the research which has reported the logistics companies’ social media execution is scant. Hence, the aim of this article attempts to explore how third party logistics companies in the U.S. promoted their services and managed their official Twitter fan pages and help pages, what are the clients’ feedback entails, comments, and complaints about the customer service, and what are the similar and different keywords between the third party logistics are. This research collected the tweets by using the technique called Web Crawler, and analyzed the data through, data collection, text parsing, text filtering, and text mining. Results of this study indicate that companies promoted their service by several approach. For example, sport and competition sponsorships, ecological protection, and charity and holiday events. Furthermore, from the clients’ feedback, comments, and complaints, we see that clients were disappointed in the service in Saudi Arabia. Finally, from the comparison of three companies, we find out about the different corporate images and reputations. Overall, the results can help the logistics industries to develop strategies of customer engagement and brand management.

Social media usage in evacuations and emergency management represents a rapidly expanding field of study. Our paper thus provides quantitative insight into a serious practical problem. Within this context a behavioural approach is key. We discuss when facilitators should consider model-based interventions amid further implications for disaster communication and emergency management. We model the behaviour of individual people by deriving optimal contrarian strategies. We formulate a Bayesian algorithm which enables the optimal evacuation to be conducted sequentially under worsening conditions.

The main aim of this research was to examine the effects of Social Media Advertising on Brand Image of motor cars in South Africa. The study was grounded using 2 theories , AIDA (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) and DAGMAR models. Social media involved the use of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Linkedin social media platforms. The study introduced the Keller Model of Brand Knowledge and investigated the relationship between Social Media Advertising, Brand Image, Types of Brand Associations, Benefits (Functional, Symbolic and Experiential) and Attitudes. The research design entails a quantitative approach and involves a cross sectional study design. The sample (N = 254) comprises owners and drivers of motor vehicles. A snowball sampling technique was used in selecting the final sample for the current study. This method was the most practical and feasible to arrive at the selected sample. The data involved a 2 phased approach. This study emphasises the use of Social Media Advertising in brand building strategies, particularly through social media platforms - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. The findings also suggest that through social media platforms consumers’ attitudes are influenced towards advertising, brands and intentions in forwarding messages to other users. The conclusions of this study have implications for brand managers. The study reveals practical value because it demonstrates that social media activities do have a positive effect on brands because they are supportive of the buying process.

Performance measurement of logistics companies is based upon various performance indicators. Yet, in the logistics industry, there are several vaguenesses, such as deciding on key indicators and determining interrelationships between performance indicators. In order to resolve these vaguenesses, this paper first presents the stakeholder-informed Balanced Scorecard (BSC) model, by incorporating financial (e.g. cost) and non-financial (e.g. social media) performance indicators, with a comprehensive approach as a response to the major shortcomings of the generic BSC regarding the negligence of different stakeholders. Subsequently, since the indicators are not independent of each other, a robust multi-criteria decision making technique, the Analytic Network Process (ANP) method is implemented to analyze the interrelationships. The integration of these two techniques provides a novel way to evaluate logistics performance indicators from logisticians' perspective. This is a matter that has not been addressed in the logistics industry to date, and as such remains a gap that needs to be investigated. Therefore, the proposed model identifies key performance indicators as well as various stakeholders in the logistics industry, and analyzes the interrelationships among the indicators by using the ANP. Consequently, the results show that educated employee (15.61%) is the most important indicator for the competitiveness of logistics companies.

The diploma thesis concerns itself with the analysis of connection between the media exposure to refugeedom topics and the perceived salience of the issue. Combined qualitative and quantitative research designs ruled by QUAN → qual scheme are used in the thesis. In the quantitative part the effect of exposure to refugeedom-related news on the perceived salience of the subject is constructed using TV and newspaper viewing figures while controlling socio- demographic characteristics of respondents. Binary logistic regression was used to find the influence. The analysis shows that the exposure to content concerning immigration and refugees has influenced the rated importance of the issue. However, there are other variables not included in the model which are affecting the salience. The qualitative approach offers insights into the relationship discovered with quantitative methods. In-depth interviews showed people are aware of the media influence mainly regarding topics they are thinking about and discussing with their social surroundings. According to some interviewees this influence is stronger observed in topics where we lack personal experience, like the refugees. How to use a good teaching model to improve student’s learning achievement has become the major focus of our education system. Both “flipped class” and “common learning embodiment” teaching proposals all emphasize on teacher’s teaching and student’s learning in order to improve teacher’s teaching quality. The study on flipped class has received much attention lately. Whether the attitude of teacher using digital media in a flipped class will have any impact on student’s learning achievement is the key objective of the current study. The research was conducted with a questionnaire survey created from a study of literature review. It was executed by applying the techniques of stratified random sampling. Outof a total of 441samples, 424 valid samples (96.14%) have been received. The main study conclusions are as follows: 1. Administrative logistic support on the attitude of elementary school teachers using digital media in a flipped class shows significant influence on parent’s involvement, in terms of “emotional support”, “information support” and “substantive support”. 2. The attitude of elementary school teachers using digital media in a flipped class itself also shows significant influence on parent’s involvement. Moreover, the dimensions of “aggressive communicators”, “aggressive supporter” and “cooperative teaching” are all showing positive effect and reaching significant level.
