(1) Background: Currently, logistics operators are struggling with the problem of acquiring new areas to create added value. One of such challenges is acquiring a new function in the form of demand forecasting and coordination skills. The increase in the need to forecast demand is related to the increasing complexity of the distribution network, omnichannel systems and turbulent environment. It is necessary to have a comprehensive approach to the distribution network and to develop competences related to coordination. For the authors, one of the most important coordination factors is the quali

Increasing demands for logistics services cause several challenges related to total costs and meeting global environmental requirements. Logistic operators make efforts to improve all logistic processes and the distribution chain system by optimizing distribution networks and transport routes. Also, using clean or renewable energy help to meet the above-mentioned requirements by using environmentally friendly means of transportation such as electric and hybrid vehicles. The replacement of conventional with electric vehicles provides numerous benefits for improving the efficiency of the distrib

Abstract

Last mile delivery is the logistics transportation segment that has the most negative impacts and more likely to occur in urban areas. This negative impact will be felt by the urban citizens whose quality of life is guaranteed by the city administrator. On the other hand, logistics operators have limitations in changing their operating systems. The purpose of this study is to identify the gaps in the views of each stakeholder in realizing a solution to logistical problems, namely the Urban Consolidation Center, B20 Fuel, Limited Traffic Zone, and Fleet Renewal. In the e-commerce last-mile delivery process, the asset operators (logistics service providers who own parcel locker facilities) support their delivery service with parcel lockers, while the non-asset operators (logistics service providers without parcel lockers) perform door-to-door delivery. Due to demand fluctuation, asset operators’ parcel-locker slots may be left vacant, while non-asset operators are stuck with the high-cost door-to-door service. AbstractIn order to alleviate road traffic congestion, a logistics concept based on small inland vessels in the West German canal network has been developed for the distribution of containers. The service concept rests on multiple transshipment points throughout the considered geographic area as potential origins and destinations of transport legs. After safeguarding the technical feasibility, the resulting service concept needs to be examined in order to assess its economic viability. Only with promising outcomes resulting from this assessment can potential operators be convinced to transfer

Abstract In-Line Inspection (ILI) of pipelines is quickly becoming the industry-preferred method of integrity assessment. As the technology has matured, new frontiers have begun to be exploited by this technique which has traditionally found its primary application in onshore transmission pipeline systems. The translation of the application of this technique to the offshore environment is not without its pitfalls, both technological and economic. This paper will discuss the limitations of attempting to use commonly applied onshore logistical activities in an offshore environment and the impact

Applications of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are on the rise. Particularly within the healthcare sector the potential is huge as its cited as the most accepted application. This paper introduces an agent-based simulation to evaluate the network performance of UAV-based logistics networks in healthcare. The simulation is applied to a hypothetical real-world network. During a simulated day, the UAV fleet performs 212 flights, including 97 delivery flights, amounting to 4264 minutes enroute and covering a distance of 5941 kilometers. The analysis reveals average non-idle and mission utilizatio

The ability to prognosticate the future state of a mechanical component can greatly improve the ability of a helicopter operator to manage their assets. Fundamentally, prognostics can change the logistics support of a helicopter by: reducing spares, improving the likelihood of a deployment meeting its mission requirements, and reducing unscheduled maintenance events. A successful prognosis is based on applying a fault model and usage metrics (torque) to a diagnostic. This paper addresses a generalized fault and usage model through simplification of Paris' Law and the use of a Kalman Smoother.

Abstract In the oil and gas industry top-of-the-line corrosion (TLC) has been the cause of numerous pipeline failures and continues to be one of the more challenging corrosion mechanisms to mitigate. Historically, attempts to mitigate top-of-the line corrosion in carbon steel pipelines using chemicals has relied on batch inhibitors (BIs). However, the batching process comes with several drawbacks including a large draw on operator field personnel resources, safety aspects of in-situ pre-diluting with solvents, deferred production, etc., whilst some facilities are not amenable to pigging and ba

The National Science Foundation operates stations on the ice sheets of Antarctica and Greenland to investigate Earth’s climate history, life in extreme environments, and the evolution of the cosmos. Understandably, logistics costs predominate budgets due to the remote locations and harsh environments involved. Currently, manual ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys must preceed vehicle travel across polar ice sheets to detect subsurface crevasses or other voids. This exposes the crew to the risks of undetected hazards. We have developed an autonomous rover, Yeti, specifically to conduct GPR s
