Full textRecent years have seen a marked increase in the e-commerce industry. With this increase, logistics plays an important role for companies to create competitive advantages. This is emphasized in previous research, where logistics has been identified as a major factor for success in the e-commerce industry. The report aims to help fill the knowledge gap that exists when it comes to the logistics of e-commerce. We have, together with our case-company identified five focus areas to study closer. These areas are vendor relationship, inventory, forecasting, information management and customer relationship. We have made a qualitative study with interviews in a case-company to produce nuanced data. Reliability arose through numerous interviews with people who all hold extensive knowledge of the value-chain and where we have been able to compare some answers. The result in this report consists of the analyzed data from the survey done at the case-company. It revolves around the five focus areas as previously described. The discussion revealed that there are significant opportunities for improvement for more efficient logistics in all focus areas. It was also, by putting more focus on operational logistics, companies can gain a competitive edge in a rapidly growing and competitive market. In conclusion, we were able to provide answers to the questions we had and have therefore fulfilled the purpose of the report. E-commerce success depends largely on how the logistics are handled. In this work, one can´t just focus on the delivery of the product/service. It is equally important to manage the processes involved in the beginning and in the middle of the chain in order to offer a good final product. Having a strategy for how the communication with the customer and the supplier shall be maintained is an advantage to be able to make quick decisions and build lasting relationships. Information that is integrated also offers help to streamline processes and decision-making.

Full textThe concept of logistics is to handle all the activities within a company in the most efficient way. Logistics is mostly associated with the flow of materials within the company, but it is important to remember that logistic also includes the administrative and information flow. A good information flow, both with external and internal partners will lead to good cooperation between the different partners. Good cooperation will lead to more efficient processes, which in turn will give a higher customer value. The purpose of this paper was to develop a methodology to analyse and improve the efficiency in a material and information flow between different units. Based on the purposed pertinent theories that have been found; for example, theories about Lean production, supply chain management, information systems and the importance of good communication skills within an organization. The theory that was found is secondary data, which has been thoroughly examined before it has been used. A methodology was designed based on the factors that were considered relevant to create good material and information flows. The designed methodology was tested in Sandvik SMT. As a major part of the methodology included an identification of the current status of the case company, interviews and observations have been conducted. The methodology helped to create a structured approach, which has resulted in a number of identified problems. The problems that have been identified includes among others, insufficient communication and information flows within the organisation and a limited cooperation between the various units in the supply chain. Based on the found theory and the study conducted at Sandvik SMT, we concluded that effective material and information flow are created by including well-designed IT systems and good cooperation skills in supply chains.

Full textThe study aims to develop recommendations in order to reduce the number of claims regarding not delivered goods during Volkswagen Group Sverige AB’s distribution of spare parts. By mapping the material and information flow, in the supply chain can be identified, and based on a further investigation of its causes useful proposals of actions can be presented. Part Logistics (henceforth VPL) is a part of Volkswagen Group Sverige AB‘s aftermarket function and distribute spare parts to around 250 dealers in Sweden, Finland and Norway. Every day, VPL supplies 15 000 order lines with spare parts for Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Audi, Skoda, SEAT and Porsche. VPL has identified deviations regarding the deliveries to the retailers which they consider important to investigate, since errorfree deliveries is a central part of customer satisfaction for retailers as well as end customers in the aftermarket. The deviations are internally referred to as claims and of the reported cases, 32 percent consist of situations where VPL fails to deliver an order line in time or at all. Those cases measure up to the type of claim that occurs to the greatest extent on VPL and is internally labelled as Not delivered. The theoretical framework includes theory within three main areas that are considered necessary for the further investigation. The aftermarket is one of the main areas, which partly includes general theory about the aftermarket and its characteristics, but also a framework adapted to the current study. Furthermore, mapping is presented as one of the main areas which includes practical approaches for mapping based on a number of theories. In the current study, the work of improvement also constitutes a central theoretical area and the third main area therefore includes the theory of how companies can accomplish continuous work of improvement based on several different methods. Based on VPL‘s current situation and acquired theory the task could be pinned down to a number of key issues including related questions and detailed questions, that serve as a tool for the further study. Based on the mapping of the supply chain as well as the acquired data from VPL, a number of scenarios could be formulated that represent different situations from where the claims labelled as Not delivered may occur. Through a data analysis regarding the formulated scenarios, it was found that the largest share of claims labelled as Not delivered is a result of unaccomplished order picks. By a further investigation of the causes regarding the presence of unaccomplished order picks, the root cause of the problem could be determined which is considered to be a lack of implemented technology and structured work with improvements. Based on the identified root causes recommendations are formulated including two action proposal expected to reduce the number of missed out deliveries. VPL is recommended to introduce more technological solutions in the business to ensure that order picking is performed. An introduction of more technology such as scanning and RFID would not only reduce the presence of unaccomplished order picks, it would further eliminate situations considered critical regarding the occurrence of other claims in the supply chain. Furthermore, VPL is recommended to implement a structured way of working with improvements which partly means that they will work actively to adjust and in a long-term prevent occurrence of deviations in the business.

Full textSammanfattning
Bakgrund

Abstract
Background
Lean is a method and a philosophy that originates from Henry Ford’s production system and was first improved in Japan and then further at MIT in the USA and later spread across the world during the 1990s. Lean consists of a set of different tools and methods. However, it is important to understand that some of the tools and methods is older than Lean itself. With this in mind it is clear that Lean is not a new concept but is based upon many different tools and methods that are linked together. The difficulty of applying Lean is however not to use the tools and methods. The challenge for the organisation that wants to work according to Lean is to embrace the cultural change that needs to happen, the big-gest and most common barrier to a Lean-implementation is the organizational culture.
Based on this background it is interesting to try to identify factors that Lean-users consider to be important. Once the factors are identified it is also important to understand why these factors are important in order to solve the problem and not to replace them with another problem.
Objective
The purpose of this study is to identify and with help from a theoretical framework explain some of the factors which affect the implementation of Lean. Our hope is that this study will contribute to a simplified implementation of Lean. Our research questions are:
- What success factors can be identified in a Lean-implementation-process?
- Why are these key-success-factors in a Lean-implementation-process?
Realization
The empirical study consists of a qualitative study of a case company that has started to implement Lean. The interviews have been conducted in the operational and managerial level in the company. The summarized results have then been compared against a theoretical framework in an effort to create a deeper understanding of the phenomena at hand.
Results and conclusions
The literature framework provides an understanding of what an organization change and Lean implementation means. Because the organizational culture is a central part of a Lean-implementation the study explains organizational culture in a separate chapter as like literature on how people interact. In the interviews, respondents explained what they considered to be Lean and the influence Lean has on their work situation and the company. The interviews were then summarized corresponding to the topics of the discussions.
The conclusion presents a number of factors that is explained more deeply in the analysis. In order to use the factors that are identified, you need to understand the underlying causes. Every implementation is unique and therefore it is important to understand each factors cause.

Full textAn IT-controlled warehouse and order management is today common, however, the method for receiving deliveries has looked the same for a long time. You usually use bar codes / QR codes or purely manual handling with pen and paper. Radio frequency identification (RFID) enables a wireless and autonomous reading of goods that have been tagged. The technology has been aorund for a long time but has been shown to have a more positive trend in recent years, where more and more objects are being tagged. The partner in this study Fiskarhedenvillan today uses a completely manual system for deliveries of goods at their distibution center. They now want to start their digitalization of the distribution center by examining the posibility of introducing an RFID-system as a method for hondling goods at deliveries. This study, in collaboration with Sogeti and Fiskarhedenvillan, has been carried out to identify opportunities and factors and to investigate wether an implemantation is possible. Interviews have been conducted with key personell within what has been called ”the world’s best RFID project”. From the conclusions, a number of challenges are identified around processes of flows that must be updated to be able to take full advantage of an RFID system. Futhermore, RFID technology as a method for receiving goods rarely becomes more efficient unless the processes between flows are changed or updated, and the working methods should also be looked upon to be able to utilize the advantages of RFID. Since the possibility of gourding against an uncompleted logistics chain with a combined tag / barcode label at the same time as more and more objects are being tagged, it makes RFID systems more directly usable. Implementations are facilitated by existing proven standards. Critical factors to consider prior to implementation include environmental analysis and that implementations of RFID systems often have a great impact on the entire chain. Furthermore, opportunities are identified as previously proven systems and a positive trend for implementations in the RFID field.

Full textThe demand for shorter lead-times and increased delivery reliability puts pressure on companies to provide more efficient logistic services. One strategy to deal with this demand is by outsourcing logistics to a third part. The development of logistics information systems enables increased control over business supply chains. This is why Green Cargo aims to create a Logistics Control Tower (LCT) solution to provide it’s customers with better information with higher availability. One such system is the Green Cargo control tower solution, which aims to improve information quality and availability alike. This is also the origin of this thesis at Green Cargo Division Logistics. The aim of this project was to identify the information needs in the logistic processes connected to Green Cargo Division Logistics, and to present a requirement specification for a LCT. The LCT will be designed to work as an information and decision support system. The main source of information was collected through interviews with customers of Green Cargo, as well as personnel at Green Cargo.
The research findings suggest that there is potential for improvement within the information flow between Green Cargo and the other parties involved in the logistic process. A need for improved information flows and communication became apparent through the investigation. We therefore suggest that Green Cargo develops a LCT containing functions such as cost follow-up, statistics, stock level information, order information, proof of delivery, track&trace, notification, environment information, and invoice control. Whilst some of these functions are yet to be introduced, others are basic functions already provided for by Green Cargo, but could nonetheless be improved. Most of the suggested functions are generated through the customers needs while invoice control and automated notification is a demand from Green Cargo personnel. A web interface with the possibility to adapt the content to different customers could serve as a solution to these needs. Input to the LCT is collected from different information systems such as vendor management systems and databases at logistic service providers.

Full textBackground: The environmental sustainability concept is a driving factor in the development of logistics in connection with the pressures from both society and its consumers. The strong growth in e-commerce has put e-retailers in a difficult situation as the requirements for short delivery times affect their work to work even more environmentally sustainable. Here, companies logistics management is put to the test, as the dilemma between delivery times and environmentally sustainable deliveries forces the companies to strike a balance between the two. Thus, it is demonstrated that the e-commerce companies work with their logistics management becomes their way of overcoming this problem. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to contribute to a better understanding of how e-commerce companies work with their logistics management to stay competitive. Research question: 1) How does the demand for environmentally sustainable transport solutions affect e-commerce companies' logistics management? 2) How does e-commerce companies work with their logistics management to meet the demand for short delivery times? Methodology: The study has a qualitative research strategy and through a case study, four case companies have been selected to study. The perspective chosen within the study is the hermeneutic perspective with an abductive approach. The collection of the empirical data was conducted using four semi-structured interviews with one respondent from each case company. The empirical data has also been supplemented with document studies Conclusion: From the study, we were able to conclude that the e-commerce companies efforts to offer environmentally sustainable deliveries can be derived from several factors. Where the choice to outsource their freight transport and increased use of home deliveries in combination with increasingly automated and information-driven warehousing operations was their way of meeting this demand. As the dilemma of working in an environmentally sustainable manner does not always correlate with the ambition of e-commerce companies to offer short delivery times, it was found that areas such as fill rates were an aspect where delivery time proved to be more important and hence e-retailers continue to maintain their low fill rates. Apart from filling levels, automation and the use of information systems are areas where environmentally sustainable deliveries and short delivery times are correlated.

Full textPurpose – The purpose of the study was to investigate the internal interaction of a small, manufacturing ETO-business's customer order process, as well as how boundary objects facilitate its boundary-crossing interaction. In order to fulfill the purpose of the study the following questions will be answered: What characterizes boundary-crossing interaction in a small, manufacturing ETO-business's customer ordering process? How can boundary objects facilitate boundary-crossing interaction in a small, manufacturing ETO-business? Method – To fulfil the purpose of the study, a case study has been conducted at Premould AB. Through interviews and document studies, their customer order process has been investigated and interaction objects in the process been identified. The collected data then formed a base for the establishment of the theoretical framework. With the empirical collection and the theoretical framework, an analysis has been conducted which, in turn, generated the results of the study. Findings – By examining the customer ordering process, in an ETO-business, different characteristics of boundary-crossing interaction has been identified. Interaction objects, which are used according to the principles of boundary objects, have been identified in the process. Boundary objects can facilitate internal interaction if used at the proper level of complexity of knowledge sharing found in the interfaces. Implications – The result that boundary objects facilitate boundary-crossing interaction provides a practical contribution to small, manufacturing ETO-business. Through the choice of boundary object used, it is possible to simplify knowledge sharing and make more effective work processes. There is also a theoretical contribution to further research on boundary objects in ETO-contexts. Limitations – One of the limitations of the study is that it can be difficult to generalize from the result, due to the use of a single-case design. Moreover, boundary-crossing interaction is complex to investigate with structural methods, and it was therefore difficult to closely investigate the identified objects. Keywords – Engineer to order (ETO), boundary-crossing interaction, knowledge boundaries, boundary object.

Full textPurpose – The purpose with this study is to map a raw material value flow analysis and identify non-value-creating activities and propound suggestions for improvement. Method – The study is a case study based on an inductive approach with quantitative elements. The used methods is of a qualitative character since the study is based on interviews and interpretation based on observations of the basic data collection. The data collection has been done through literature studies, interviews, observations and document studies. In order to achieve high credibility, it has been important that the design of interview questions can be linked to fulfillment of the purpose. This work was done to minimize the risk of systematic errors. Findings – The study's results are based on a mapping of a flow where a current analysis was carried out to then later end in a value flow analysis. Based on the value flow analysis, it appeared that a shortage in the flow was high levels of waste. The largest identified waste was a lack of quality, mainly due to the production of defective products. This shortcoming also affects large parts of the flow. The measures proposed in the study are to implement standards through a change in the culture of the company, and to continue to work on continuous improvements. Implications – The result, which shows the importance of working with streamlining waste, which in this case leads to a lack of quality, mainly in the form of production of defective products. The study can be seen as a practical contribution to manufacturing companies, by embracing these proposals for action, it should generate a better consensus on the quality of the business. Also a theoretical contribution where further research could look at how to technically and psychologically implement a change like this. Limitations – It can be difficult to generalize the results as this is a study conducted as a one-case design. Furthermore, it is also complex to investigate and develop a study that shows how quality is linked to corporate culture.
