Abstract Chapter 28 of Within You Without You, “Why Peggy Lee Matters,” recounts the little-known interactions between pre-rock pop singer Peggy Lee and the Beatles, especially George Harrison. It was Lee’s version of the Broadway hit “Till There Was You” that inspired the Beatles to record the tune. The Los Angeles rental house in which Harrison composed “Blue Jay Way” belonged to Lee’s manager. And Lee was one of many pop singers to record Harrison’s “Something.” Harrison told an interviewer in 1979 that he long had in mind that his song “Not Guilty”—written in 1968 for The Beatles but not r

“Peggy Guggenheim’s and Bryher’s Investment: How Financial Speculation Created a Female Modernist Tradition” focuses on the patronage of two wealthy women, Peggy Guggenheim and Bryher, in order to examine how these patrons shaped modernism produced by women. The chapter also considers other female modernists such as H.D. and Mina Loy. I examine how modernist patronage required both a living subsidy and a willingness to provide pipelines to publication. Further, I argue that in these two cases, the source of the money helps predict the mode of patronage and ultimately the canon; the patron’s li

Hitchcock hit his stride in the mid-1930s with a series of adventurous stories in which he drew major performances from Peter Lorre as the unpredictable villain in The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), Robert Donat as the sensitive hero and Peggy Ashcroft as an abused wife in The 39 Steps (1935), and Sylvia Sidney in Sabotage. Hitchcock allowed Lorre a lot of creative freedom within his frames, and he took full advantage of the quicksilver talent of Donat and Ashcroft while carefully controlling Sidney in Sabotage so that the scene where she murders her husband (Oskar Homolka) is a triumph for bot

Abstract This chapter places Loy, Barnes, and H.D. in the context of the mid-century and the ways in which modernism was received by the public as its practitioners grew older. By examining the life writing of each author in the mid-century, I argue that they eschewed a growing interest for modernist memoir in the mid-century in favour of recording their experiences of ageing. Authors and artists such as Robert McAlmon, William Carlos Williams, Man Ray, Peggy Guggenheim, and Wyndham Lewis sought to stake their claim and define the modernist period by its past. In contrast, Loy, Barnes, and H.D

The ability to cryopreserve engineered tissues is important for the clinical application of therapies based on living cells. Cryopreservation facilitates the manufacture, transport and safety of cell-based therapies. The cryopreservation of cells and tissues had typically required the use of specialized solutions containing cryoprotective agents (CPAs). The addition of a CPA to the freezing solution may result in damage if it is not done properly. Tissues and intact organs can exhibit reduced cellular viability when exposed to sufficiently large step changes in external osmolarity resulting fr
