Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractWe study Klee’s measure problem — computing the volume of the union of n axis-parallel hyperrectangles in $$\mathbb {R}^d$$ R d — in the oblivious RAM (ORAM) setting. For this, we modify Chan’s algorithm [12] to guarantee memory access patterns and control flow independent of the input; this makes the resulting algorithm applicable to privacy-preserving computation over outsourced data and (secure) multi-party computation. For $$d = 2$$ d = 2 , we develop an oblivious version of Chan’s algorithm that runs in expected $$\mathcal {O}(n \log ^{5/3} n)$$ O ( n log 5 / 3 n ) time for perfect security or $$\mathcal {O}(n \log ^{3/2} n)$$ O ( n log 3 / 2 n ) time for computational security, thus improving over optimal general transformations. For $$d \ge 3$$ d ≥ 3 , we obtain an oblivious version with perfect security while maintaining the $$\mathcal {O}(n^{d/2})$$ O ( n d / 2 ) runtime, i. e., without any overhead.Generalizing our approach, we derive a technique to transform divide-and-conquer algorithms that rely on linear-scan processing into oblivious counterparts. As such, our results are of independent interest for geometric divide-and-conquer algorithms that maintain an order over the input. We apply our technique to two such algorithms and obtain efficient oblivious counterparts of algorithms for inversion counting and computing a closest pair in two dimensions.

AbstractRecent developments in causal machine learning open perspectives for new approaches that support decision-making in healthcare processes using causal models. In particular, Heterogeneous Treatment Effect (HTE) inference enables the estimation of causal treatment effects for individual cases, offering great potential in a process mining context. At the same time, HTE literature typically focuses on clinical outcome measures, disregarding process efficiency. This paper shows the potential of jointly considering the clinical and operational effects of treatments in the context of healthcare processes. Moreover, we present a simple pipeline that makes existing HTE machine learning techniques directly applicable to event logs. Besides these conceptual contributions, a proof-of-concept application starting from the publicly available sepsis event log is outlined, forming the basis for a critical reflection regarding HTE estimation in a process mining context.

Very recently, there has been a surge of improvements in the fine-grained complexity of NP-hard reasoning tasks in this algebra, which has improved the running time from the naive 2^O(n^2) to O*((1.0615n)^n), and even faster algorithms are known for unit intervals and the case when we a bounded number of overlapping intervals. Despite these improvements the best known lower bound is still only 2^o(n) under the exponential-time hypothesis and ma

Confinement has direct influence on the dome reference velocity and indirect influence on the combustor’s performance, emissions, operability, liner and dome temperature levels and gradients. Understanding the effects of the confinement is crucial to conventional combustor design. Recently, lean direct injection (LDI) combustor has been popularly employed to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions from gas turbine. Compared to conventional combustor, LDI combustor has a much larger amount of air entering into the dome. Therefore, combustion characteristics and confinement effects in LDI combust

This paper presents an approach to automatic tuning of the parameters of a PID controller for the multivariable gas turbine engine control, taking into account amplitude saturation and model nonstrict-properness. First of all, we illustrate that the PID controller design problem can be transformed into seeking a static output feedback controller for some augmented state-space model. Then we compute an initial stabilizable parameters of the involved PID controller in the strictly proper case, using a well-known static output feedback algorithm. As far as a non-strictly proper model is concerned

Abstract:
Traditional birth attendants (TBAs) who assist women are common in low-income countries. Providing formal training to untrained TBAs or additional training on specific tasks could improve care for pregnant women and pregnancy outcomes. Training programmes can differ considerably, making it difficult to make clear distinctions between initial training and additional training that are applicable across different settings.

The ability to transport wet, untreated natural gases through pipelines offshore or at other inaccessible locations is an important factor in the development of new gas fields. When a wet gas contains CO2 and H2 S, the internal corrosion rate of steel pipelines may be expected to increase. Considerable work has been done to define effects of CO2 and H2 S on corrosion rates of pipeline, casing, and tubing steels, particularly at higher pressures and temperatures typical of downhole environments and in gases in which CO2 is the only acid gas present. Stress corrosion cracking of line pipe from the soil side involves slow crack growth at stresses which may be as low as half the yield strength, this slow crack growth continuing until the crack penetrates the wall to produce a leak or until the stress intensity on the uncracked ligament reaches the value for a fast fracture to penetrate the wall thickness. The controlling parameters that contribute to the mechanism of failure, essentially involving growth by dissolution in the grain boundary regions, are, as with other systems displaying such failure, electrochemical, mechanical, and metallur

The broader tax literature suggests that taxpayers are more likely to pay taxes when states provide ‘reciprocal returns’, including collective public goods and services, basic security, some level of representation, and accountability of public institutions. While such explanations of taxpayers’ willingness to pay taxes are compelling in the context of developed states, they are less applicable to more fragile polities. In such settings, the state typically has low enforcement capacity and struggles to provide security or effectively deliver public goods in an accountable manner. This paper se

There is circumstantial evidence of hydrogen playing a role in, so called, low pH SCC of pipeline steel, but direct evidence for such is lacking. Resolution of this situation is of practical importance because of its implications for modeling. Thus, existing models for high pH SCC of pipelines are based upon a dissolution controlled mechanism of crack growth, but such models will not be applicable to low pH SCC if hydrogen is involved with the latter. Measurements have been made of the permeation of hydrogen into X52 and X60 pipeline steels at various potetials while exposed to a simulated gro

The United Nations Register of Conventional Arms (UNROCA) was established in 1991 as a transparency mechanism with the main goal of preventing potentially destabilizing build-ups of armaments. UNROCA reporting is particularly relevant to South East Asian states, and they are willing to participate. However, after high reporting rates in UNROCA’s first two decades, these states’ reporting rates have been low in recent years. When they report, they give all the required information on their arms imports and much additional, and useful, detail. Moreover, they do not consider UNROCA’s discriminato
