Zoltán Kodály, a Hungarian composer, ethnomusicologist, and music educator, is widely known for his philosophical and pedagogical contributions to music education. The purpose of this article was to trace the development of the Kodály movement in the United States from its implementation in the 1960s to present day. Questions that guided the research were (1) Who was Zoltán Kodály and what was his philosophy of music education? (2) Who were some of the American music educators who initially implemented the Kodály concept in the United States and what role did they play in the spread of the concept? and (3) How has the Kodály concept evolved in the United States? Following an overview of Kodály and his philosophy, the contributions of Mary Helen Richards, Denise Bacon, Lois Choksy, and Sr. Lorna Zemke during the early years of the Kodály movement are discussed. The evolution of the Kodály concept is discussed in relation to the work of Lois Choksy, Ann Eisen and Lamar Robertson, John Feierabend, Susan Brumfield, and Mícheál Houlahan and Philip Tacka. A conclusion includes suggestions for the advancement of the Kodály concept, including the need for research on the methods of the approach.

Les embargos et les boycotts ont été utilisés depuis longtemps comme moyens de représailles d'une nation contre une autre. Ces moyens ont connu une recrudescence depuis 1945, due à la mondialisation du commerce et aux relations conflictuelles de divers groupes de pays. Par ailleurs, afin de rendre leurs sanctions économiques plus efficaces, certains États n'ont pas hésité à donner à leur législation des effets extraterritoriaux, faisant ainsi des États tiers les instruments de leur politique étrangère. Le Canada, comme la plupart des pays à économie ouverte, n'est pas à l'abri de ces effets. L'auteur a choisi, pour illustrer son propos, deux cas qui ont connu leur paroxysme au début des années 80 : l'extraterritorialité des lois américaines concernant l'exportation et le boycottage arabe contre Israël. Après avoir dressé un historique de l'utilisation de ces armes économiques, il étudie les réactions législatives et judiciaires du Canada et des principaux États européens. Les divers gouvernements, en vue de résoudre les conflits de lois engendrés par ces situations relevant tant du droit international privé que public, et dont les premières victimes sont d'abord leurs justiciables, ont réalisé que la solution, en dépit des efforts des législateurs et des tribunaux nationaux, demeure encore en bonne partie diplomatique.

To study the distribution of remaining oil inside meandering channel sand body, the size of sand body architecture was calculated by the use of sedimentary facies, dense well, river parameters, cores, well logs and other data. The architecture of meandering channel that was crescent-shaped in plane and diagonal type in section was identifiable. On the base of study of architecture, the shielding of interlayer was classified into four types by the observation of oiliness interlayer. Framework of seepage flow was identified in meandering channel sand body. Several lateral accretion bodies between the completely choked interlayer constituted the flow unit. Combined with core analysis, the remaining oil in meandering channel sand body distributed in the upper and the middle of flow unit which did not connect with production well. The oil displacement efficiency in the flow unit was a positive rhythm in the flow unit. The oil displacement efficiency was a high-contrast positive rhythm in the lateral accretion body shielded by completely choked interlayer. That was a low-contrast positive rhythm in the lateral accretion body shielded by partly choked or restricted interlayer. All of these would provide guidance for developing the remaining oil.

L’histoire de la codification en Afrique est indissociable de celle de la colonisation. Celle-ci — du moins politique — a pris fin, il y a une quarantaine d’années, le temps pour les États africains d’adopter leurs propres lois adaptées à leur situation. Sans conteste, le Code civil des Français a influencé et influence encore les droits africains. Devant le dualisme juridique produit par l’importation de ce code, se pose néanmoins la question du choix à opérer soit pour la connaissance effective, l’acceptation et le respect des droits africains, soit pour l’écart criant entre la loi et les pratiques sociales. L’auteur a choisi de scruter la part des droits originellement africains dans les récentes réformes et de vérifier si les Africains y lisent effectivement l’état de leur droit et l’âme de leur société. Sinon, pourquoi et comment y pourvoir ?

Dans le contexte de la Marche mondiale des femmes, le Comité du Nouveau Brunswick a choisi comme principale revendication l'adoption d'une loi « proactive » sur l'équité salariale. Le présent texte décrit d'abord la problématique de l'équité salariale et donne un bref historique des lois canadiennes et néo-brunswickoises qui ont pour objet l'obtention d'un salaire plus équitable pour les femmes. Ensuite, les auteures exposent les démarches entreprises par l'Union des femmes pour l'équité salariale et par le Comité du Nouveau Brunswick pour la Marche mondiale en vue de promouvoir cette revendication. Ces démarches comprennent la diffusion d'Information sous forme de sessions où les femmes sont invitées à relater leur expérience du manque d'équité au quotidien. Les témoignages qui en résultent sont révélateurs des effets pervers de cet te injustice sur la vie personnelle des femmes, notamment dans la construction d'une dynamique de dominée-dominant dans leur relation de couple.

Le néolibéralisme a non seulement conduit à la création de nouvelles catégories d’emploi, concrétisant la précarisation des relations de travail, mais aussi à l’externalisation de plus en plus fréquente de la main-d’oeuvre. Au coeur de ce marché du travail renouvelé et défavorable aux travailleurs, les entreprises de travail temporaire occupent une place de premier ordre. Celles-ci fournissent à des entreprises une main-d’oeuvre qualifiée, sur demande, sans être contraintes par la totalité des lois du travail. Le législateur français a très tôt choisi de réguler ce type de relations de travail tripartites ; tel n’est pas le cas au Québec. Aucune loi spécifique n’ayant été élaborée, de très nombreux travailleurs temporaires y sont livrés à eux-mêmes, mais aussi aux pratiques peu orthodoxes des « agences de location de personnel », telles qu’elles sont nommées au Québec. Ces agences gèrent les travailleurs temporaires comme n’importe quelle autre fourniture, disparaissent du jour au lendemain ou encore se dédoublent pour échapper aux réclamations salariales. Le législateur québécois gagnerait à s’inspirer du modèle français : celui-ci, bien qu’il soit imparfait, propose plusieurs mesures très intéressantes. L’angle d’approche choisi par l’auteure pour présenter les dispositions françaises est celui des communautés d’origine et d’accueil des travailleurs temporaires. À son avis, il importe que le législateur québécois régule les activités des agences de location de personnel et s’attaque sérieusement et rapidement au cas de cette catégorie de travailleurs qui, plus que n’importe quelle autre, souffre de la crise économique.

AbstractDepuis les travaux de Chomsky et Rosenbaum dans les années soixante, la question du contrôle des infinitives constitue une sorte de lieu commun en linguistique, en ce sens que toutes les théories se doivent désormais d'en rendre compte, et que la littérature sur le sujet est abondante – au moins en ce qui concerne l'anglais. On se propose ici de réexaminer, à partir des données du fiançais, les fondements empiriques de la distinction devenue notoire entre verbes dits ‘à contrôle’ et verbes dits ‘à montée’: il apparaît que cette distinction est loin d'êcirc;tre toujours évidente, et qu'elle est de nature fondamentalement sémantique plutôt que syntaxique. Les résultats de ce réexamen nous amènent à discuter le traitement du contrôle récemment proposé en HPSG, et à suggérer un traitement alternatif du problème de la sélection du contrôleur.

<p> </p><p><span> </span>La historia de la arquitectura fue tomando forma, amalgamando métodos y enfoques muy diversos a lo largo del siglo xix. En el proceso de su construcción, el dibujo jugó un papel capital, singularmente para hacerse cargo de dos dimensiones vitales: el tiempo y el espacio. Por un lado, los investigadores tuvieron que implementar estrategias gráficas para manejarse con “el tiempo histórico”–extraer de los edificios los elementos relevantes, exponerlos cronológicamente y hacer visibles sus transformaciones sucesivas–; por otro, necesitaban visualizar “el espacio histórico” –cartografiar la arquitectura del pasado de modo que, conocida su distribución, se pudiera indagar las causas de que cambios significativos surgieran en unos lugares con preferencia a otros, así como los vehículos de su diseminación–. </p><p>Está por hacer la historia de estos mapas. El presente artículo –que se publica en dos partes– se propone señalar algunos de sus debates, ciñéndose a lo ocurrido en Francia. En la primera parte trataré del empeño de Arcisse de Caumont por dotar a los mapas históricos (cartes monumentales) de un sistema pasigráfico –contemporáneo de otras propuestas pasigráficas como la de Maimieux y Humboldt– y su posterior fortuna. Agonie et Il n’y a plus de chemin de Jacques Brault mettent en scène des clochards qui ont choisi de quitter la vie sociale, qui « vivent en partie ailleurs », qui ne « sont plus tout à fait dedans », pour reprendre les mots de l’auteur. Préférant le détournement, le silence et le retrait aux discours engagés, ils mettent au jour les insuffisances d’une transmission culturelle qui, loin de reposer sur des certitudes, se révèle profondément aporétique à l’époque contemporaine. Quels héritages ces deux textes livrent-ils, sinon le détachement, le décalage, la distance et l’anachronisme qui, de toute façon, ne s’enseignent ni ne s’apprennent ? Quelle conception du vivre-ensemble contemporain élaborent-ils ? Benoit).Au moment où la technologie connaît un regain d'intérêt dans les disciplines historiques, où l'archéologie industrielle s'investit dans la connaissance des structures matérielles de production qui ont profondément bouleversé le paysage économique des 18eet 19esiècles, à un moment aussi où la mécanisation agraire qui en est l'héritière s'essouffle et s'épuise en cette fin de 20esiècle à créer des engins toujours plus spectaculaires, il nous paraît opportun de rechercher dans la longue durée les prémices de ce que l'on a parfois appelé la « révolution du machinisme agricole » car la mise au point, dans le monde rural, d'outillages complexes ou de systèmes techniques particuliers qui dénotent une application — ou une volonté d'application — de données mécaniques ou d'assemblages originaux n'est pas l'apanage des temps modernes. On peut percevoir dès l'Antiquité dans l'agriculture des tentatives d'innovations ou des réalisations techniques qui sont loin d'être stériles ou marginales, même si leur évaluation en termes de « progrès technologique » ou la quantification de leur apport économique sont difficiles à mesurer. This study explores the topic of music theory pedagogy in conjunction with the Kodály concept of music education and its North-American adaptation by Lois Choksy. It investigates the compatibility of the Kodály Method with post-secondary instruction in tonal harmony, using a theoretical framework derived from Kodály’s methodology and implemented as a teaching strategy for the dominant-seventh chord. The customary presentation of this concept is authenticated with an empirical case study involving four university professors. Subsequently, Kodály’s four-step instructional process informs a comparative analysis of five university-level textbooks that evaluates the sequential placement of V7, examines the procedure by which it is presented, and considers the inclusion of correlated musical excerpts. Although divergent from traditional approaches to tonal harmony, Kodály’s principles and practices are pedagogically effective. By progressing from concrete to abstract, preceding symbolization with extensive musical experience, conceptual understandings are not only intellectualized, but are developed and internalized.

L'oeuvre de celine, qui procede du double registre du roman et de l'autobiographie tout en se reclamant d'une praxis du delire, illustre de facon exemplaire la proposition, elaboree par shoshana felman dans la folie et la chose litteraire. De l'existence d'un rapport constitutif entre litterature et folie qui passe par les enjeux de l'ideologie. Clette proposition se verifie soit que l'on considere l'ecrivain comme un "cas clinique" (d'un celine "fou") ou soit que l'on adopte la perspective inverse de l'ecrivain-medecin, acteur de l'entreprise follitteraire (d'un celine "psychiatre"). C'est ainsi que l'interpretation pathographique de l'oeuvre celinien est inseparable d'une demarche de banalisation, de mise a distance, sinon de refoulement de son enjeu ideologique; l'alibi "spy" ayant pour resultat d'eluder le probleme critique pose par l'argument politique. An autofiction which claims to be a praxis of madness, celine's works are a perfect example of her theory. From the critical point of view, the notion of madness refers to a repression of the ideological orientation of celine's works. By another way, the writer himself has not avoided --either by rejecting or by accepting-- aplay on the madness ideology double approach to the literary text. In other words, pathographic reading of celine's works would be inseparable from a process of repression of the basic ideological orientation of his works; the result of the "psy" alibi would be to avoid the critical problem established by political content. In the same way, the manner by which celine accepts (in the post--war interviews) or rejects (in bagatelles pour un massacre) any possibility of a pathological approach to his works is inseparable from an ideological intention, leading to a new questioning of the worth and the ideological weight of a style which claims to value the perceivable over the intelligible and feelings rather than words

Aujourd’hui disparu, le château de Choisy-le-Roi reste bien souvent dans les esprits un symbole des fantaisies coûteuses de Louis XV et de Mme de Pompadour, idée répandues par la littérature et les chroniques des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles. Choisy occupe cependant une place majeure dans l’histoire de l’architecture des programmes mis en place pour les besoins de la vie de cour de la deuxième moitié du XVIIIe siècle. Proche de la forêt de Sénart, le château devient d’abord une résidence conviviale où se retrouve, après les parties de chasse, une « cour particulière », composée des familiers du roi et de la favorite. Louis XV convie par la suite à Choisy ses enfants, auxquels il consacre de courts séjours dans un cadre moins protocolaire. La suite nombreuse attachée à leur service transforme cet espace auparavant « privé », et le rend plus accessible aux courtisans. Cette augmentation de la fréquentation entraîne de nombreux travaux dirigés par l’architecte Ange-Jacques Gabriel. En conséquence de cette perte d’ « intimité », d’autres lieux particuliers sont alors aménagés ; ainsi, le Petit-Château, premier pavillon d’habitation de Louis XV, est construit. C’est là où prend place la table « volante ». À travers l’étude du domaine royal, on perçoit également le fonctionnement quotidien du château, où vivent de nombreux employés attachés à l’administration des Bâtiments du roi. Le travail sur le terrain est coordonné par un contrôleur des Bâtiments, dont les lettres échangées avec le Directeur de l’administration délivrent de précieuses informations sur la gestion et le personnel. Louis XV invites later to Choisy his children, to whom he dedicates short stays in a informal settings. The numerous entourage attached to their service transforms this space previously "private", and makes it more accessible to the courtiers. This increase of the company produces many construction works by the architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel. As a result of this loss of "intimacy", other intimate places are then fitted out; so, the Petit-Château, the first detached house of Louis XV, is built. It is where takes place the table « volante ». Through the study of the royal domain, we also notice the daily functioning of the castel, where live numerous employees attached to the administration des Bâtiments du roi. The field works is coordinated by a controller des Bâtiments, from whom letters exchanged with the Director of the administration give valued informations on management and staff. So, the castel of Choisy appears as a major part for the understanding of the court and the sociability of Louis XV

On s'intéresse dans cette thèse à l'étude théorique de la stabilité des profils de chocs pour différentes approximations de systèmes de lois de conservation hyperboliques mono-dimensionnels. On considère dans la première partie des profils continus pour la relaxation semi-linéaire et pour des équations avec effets diffusifs et dispersifs. On obtient des conditions nécessaires de stabilité spectrale à l'aide de la théorie de la fonction d'Evans et plus précisément du lemme de l'écart dû à R. Gardner et K. Zumbrun. Pour la relaxation semi-linéaire, on fournit une illustration de la nécessité de la condition obtenue pour un 2-choc de Lax dans un système à deux lois de conservation en exhibant un profil de choc instable, simulé numériquement par un schéma de pas fractionnaires. On montre également que la fonction d'Evans associée à la relaxation semi-linéaire tend vers la fonction d'Evans associée à une viscosité scalaire quand la vitesse de relaxation tend vers l'infini. La deuxième partie est consacrée aux profils de chocs stationnaires discrets. On montre une condition de stabilité spectrale pour le schéma de Lax-Wendroff en adaptant les théories utilisées dans le cadre continu. Enfin, on étudie la fonction de Green discrète associée au schéma de Lax-Friedrichs modifié et on obtient des estimations à la manière de celles obtenues par K. Zumbrun et P. Howard pour l'approximation par viscosité.

Fresh, boneless, vacuum-packaged pork loins were obtained from a
commercial pork processor and used in a five-part study to examine the effects
of sodium chloride (0, .125, .375, .75, 1.50%), sodium phosphates (0, .1, .2, .3
and .4%), sodium lactate (0, 1, 2, 3 and 4%), potassium lactate (0, 1, 2, 3 and
4%) and sodium diacetate (0, .05, .10, .15 and .20%) on the color, sensory
characteristics, package purge, water holding capacity, and pH of pork chops
stored in vacuum-packaging for 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. The first experiment
examined the effects of sodium chloride and sodium phosphates (Brifisol 512,
polyphosphate blend) in the aforemented attributes. The second experiment
was designed like the first experiment except a different sodium phosphate
(Brifisol 85, polyphosphate and pyrophosphate blend) was used. In the third
experiment, sodium chloride was standardized at .75% and sodium phosphate
and sodium lactate differed. In the fourth experiment, sodium chloride was
standardized at .75% and sodium phosphate and potassium lactate differed. In
the fifth experiment, sodium chloride and potassium lactate were standardized at
.75% and 2%, respectively, and sodium phosphate and sodium diacetate
differed. Results from Experiments 1 and 2 indicated that pork chops should
contain .2% NaP + .75% NaCl to improve flavor, texture, and water holding
capacity over storage time. Based on results from Experiments 3 and 4, it is
recommended that pork chops contain approximately 2% NaL or KL + .2% NaP
to maintain positive sensory flavor, texture, color and minimize processed meatlike
bite, package purge, and cook loss over time. The combination of
approximately .1% NaDi + .2% NaP maximized desirable characteristics like
pork lean/brothy, juiciness, tenderness, and color; and minimized processed
meat-like bite when compared to the control chops in Experiment 5.

La première partie de l'étude porte sur la délimitation des contours de l'obligation de se soumettre aux décisions du Conseil constitutionnel exprimée par l'article 62, alinéa 2 de la Constitution. Le régime juridique de l'autorité de la chose jugée des décisions du Conseil constitutionnel est défini. En tant que norme dépourvue de sanction, l'article 62, alinéa 2 n'est-il pas une règle de droit inachevée ? La seconde partie reprend les critères de la règle de droit en démontrant que si l'absence de sanction n'annule pas l'obligation, elle constitue un facteur de limitation de l'autorité juridique des décisions du Conseil constitutionnel.

Dans le domaine de l'automobile, l'absorption de l'énergie cinétique libérée lors d'un choc est en partie réalisée par la déformation plastique de pièces métalliques. Or, suite au durcissement des lois sur l'émission de gaz à effet de serre, le secteur automobile cherche à réduire la masse des véhicules et ainsi limiter la consommation en carburant ayant pour effet la diminution de la production de gaz nocifs. L'objectif de la thèse est de proposer de nouveaux systèmes d'absorption d'énergie plus légers et plus performants, conçus à partir d’un matériau composite de fibres de verre à matrice thermoplastique. Ces nouveaux matériaux ont comme avantage de présenter de meilleures performances en matière d’absorption d’énergie et une densité plus faible que celles des matériaux actuels, tout en étant recyclables. En ce qui concerne les composites, l'absorption d'énergie est due à un ensemble de phénomènes d'endommagements (rupture, délaminage...). La compréhension de la rupture des systèmes en composites est donc primordial : comprendre le scénario réel d'écrasement est indispensable afin d'optimiser le type de composite utilisé et la géométrie des pièces et in fine maximiser l'énergie absorbée. Dans ce but, une phase de cartographie du matériau a été réalisée afin d’améliorer notre compréhension du matériau mais également de fournir les paramètres mécaniques nécessaires à la conception d’un modèle numérique d’Eléments Finis sous Abaqus. La propriété de pseudoplasticité du stratifié +/-45° a été mise en évidence ainsi que ses bénéfices en matière d’absorption de choc. L’influence de l’orientation des plis et du taux de déformation sur la réponse du stratifié a été vérifiée afin de proposer un stratifié optimal quant à l’absorption de chocs. Enfin, une étude des paramètres géométriques a conduit à l’optimisation de la section de la pièce « absorbeur » ainsi qu’à l’utilisation d’éléments « triggers » afin de profiter du potentiel du matériau et de maximiser la quantité d’énergie absorbée. Le choix d’une section carrée avec un nombre de plis optimisé, couplée à l’utilisation d’un trigger permet de profiter de la déformation pseudoplastique du composite et d’endommager le stratifié afin de maximiser la SEA finale, et ce quelle que soit la vitesse du chocIn the automotive field, the absorption of the energy released during a car crash is partly achieved by the plastic deformation of metal absorbers and bumper beam. However, with the tightening of laws on the emission of greenhouse gases, the automotive sector seeks to reduce the mass of vehicles and thus limit consumption and therefore the production of harmful gases. The aim of the thesis is to propose new lighter and more efficient energy absorbing systems based on the optimization of a thermoplastic matrix glass fiber composite material. These new materials, whose mechanical properties are similar to metals ones, have the advantage of introducing greater performance in terms of energy absorption and lower density than current materials, while being recyclable. As regards composites, the energy absorption is in particular due to a set of phenomena of damages (rupture, delamination ...). The understanding of the rupture of composite systems is therefore essential: understanding the real crushing scenario makes it possible to optimize the type of composite used and the geometry of the pieces in order to maximize the energy absorbed. In this goal, a first material mapping phase was launched in order to improve our understanding of the material but also to provide the mechanical parameters necessary for the elaboration of a numerical model of Finite Elements under Abaqus. The pseudoplasticity property of +/- 45 ° laminated composite was highlighted as well as its energy absorption benefits. From these data, a more precise study phase was conducted on the impact behavior of the composite in order to understand and optimize the damage mechanisms responsible for the energy absorption released during a crash. The influence of ply orientation and strain rate on the laminate’s response has been checked to provide an optimal material for shock absorption. Finally, a study of the geometrical parameters led to the optimization of the section of the absorber as well as to the use of triggers to take advantage of the potential of the material and to maximize the amount of energy absorbed. Indeed, the choice of a square section, relatively simple to produce, with an optimized number of plies, coupled with the use of the trigger "knives" allows us to use the potential of the pseudoplastic deformation of the composite and to damage the laminate to finally maximize the Specific Energy Absorption regardless of the speed of the shock

Concrètement, l’application concerne l’amélioration de l’évaluation du potentiel lésionnel et l’optimisation de projectiles dits « à létalité réduite ». Cette étude a été menée dans le cadre du projet PARCHOC, associant la Délégation Générale pour l’Armement-Techniques Terrestres, le laboratoire PRISME de l’université d’Orléans, les sociétés Nexter munitions, ITC élastomère et ATCOM télémétrie. Il s’agit notamment de mettre en évidence les paramètres des projectiles qui doivent être maîtrisés pour limiter le risque lésionnel. Nous avons d’abord réalisé une étude pour caractériser des projectiles d'essais constitués d'un culot rigide et d'une ogive en mousse d'élastomère. Les propriétés dynamiques des élastomères ont été caractérisées par le système des barres de Hopkinson. Ce travail a permis la mise au point d'un modèle numérique de comportement des élastomères. Des essais ainsi que des simulations d’impacts sur cibles rigides ont ensuite été réalisés afin d'étudier l'influence du couple masse-vitesse et des caractéristiques mécaniques des élastomères sur le chargement généré. Dans la seconde partie de l'étude, des essais sur cibles biologiques instrumentées ont été menés à l’aide des projectiles d'études précédemment caractérisés. In particular, we have sought the principal projectile parameters which must be controlled to limit injury risk. Firstly, we have performed a study based on specialized test projectiles, made with a rear rigid part and soft foam (elastomeric) nose. The foams’ chemical formulations were made so that the dynamical properties (measured with the Hopkinson bar apparatus) were those expected. Experiments and simulations of the impacts on rigid wall target have been made to investigate how the mass-velocity couple and the foam material properties influence the impact force. Secondly, an experimental campaign was made using pig anatomical parts and the projectiles previously studied. Experimental and numerical results obtained during the thesis demonstrate that the dangerous nature of the projectiles used is essentially linked to the action on the thoracic bone structure after it has been weakened by the impact. Drawing on hundreds of newly released judicial archives and court cases, this book analyzes the communist judicial system in China from its founding period to the death of Mao Zedong. It argues that the communist judicial system was built when the CCP was engaged in a life-or-death struggle with the GMD, meaning that the overriding aim of the judicial system was, from the outset, to safeguard the Party against both internal and external adversaries. This fundamental insecurity and perennial fear of loss of power obsessed the Party throughout the era of Mao and beyond, prompting it to launch numerous political campaigns, which forced communist judicial cadres to choose between upholding basic legal norms and maintaining Party order. In doing all of this, The Communist Judicial System in China, 1927-1976: Building on Fear fills a major lacuna in our understanding of communist-era China.

This book presents 25 detailed sessions of an empirically supported, cognitive-behavioral treatment package called acceptance-based behavioral treatment (ABT) that has now been utilized successfully in five large National Institute of Health–sponsored clinical trials. The foundation of this approach is comprised of the nutritional, physical activity, and behavioral components of the most successful, gold-standard behavioral weight loss packages, such as Look Ahead and the Diabetes Prevention Project. These components are synthesized with acceptance, willingness, behavioral commitment, motivation, and relapse prevention strategies drawn from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Relapse Prevention Therapy. ABT is premised on the idea that specialized self-control skills are necessary for weight control, given our innate desire to consume delicious foods and to conserve energy. These self-control skills revolve around a willingness to choose behaviors that may be perceived as uncomfortable for the sake of a more valuable objective. The treatment focuses on both weight loss and weight loss maintenance and aims to confer lifelong skills that facilitate long-term weight control. Construction of Fort Shelby threatened the route by which the British supplied their Indian allies on the Mississippi. Supplies could still be distributed at Green Bay, Chicago, but for western tribes such as the Sioux and the Sauk, the Wisconsin River route was essential. Even to supply his own soldiers with food proved a constant struggle for the British commandant at Mackinac, and the constant throng of hungry allied Indians, usually accompanied by their families, often forced him to choose between depriving his own troops and alienating the Indians. The other danger threatening Mackinac was an American task force gathering under the command of Colonel George Croghan to retake the island.

This chapter analyzes how poor families' own demands helped shape the institutional landscape of child welfare in turn-of-the century Pittsburgh, as they made choices based on religious preferences as well as location and reputation. Significantly, racial prejudice limited African American families' choices and led the black community to found its own child care institutions in this period. A demographic analysis of these families who chose orphanage care for their children reveals the often multiple, overlapping crises they faced—from the loss of a spouse to disrupted support networks and inadequate housing. As parents attempted to combine wage labor and child care responsibilities, they used orphanages as a strategy for family survival.

The legitimate interest of the obligee not to be disturbed repeatedly for the same obligation seems to prevail over the interest of the obligor to offer its obligation in portions. This commentary discusses performance at one time as a rule, performance in instalments as an exception to the rule, effect of performance in instalments on counter-performance, and burden of proof relating to performance of a contractual obligation at one time or in instalments.

This commentary analyses Article 11.2.2 of the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (PICC) concerning the effects of joint and several claims. Under Art 11.2.2, full performance of an obligation in favour of one of the joint and several obligees discharges the obligor towards the other obligees. If the obligor is discharged by performance to any one of the obligees, it implies that it has the right to choose the recipient of its performance. However, this right has been restricted in the civil law tradition, where the majority of legal systems provide that the obligor which has been sued by one of the joint and several obligees can no longer discharge itself by performance to a different obligee, at least as long as the proceedings are pending. The PICC do not contain further rules as to the way in which the obligees can invoke the remedies set out in Chapter 7. In this case, each obligee appears to be entitled to claim damages for the loss it suffered as a result of a non-performance.

AbstractNeuralgia can be defined as paroxysmal, intense intermittent pain that is usually confined to specific nerve branches to the head and neck. The trigeminal nerve is responsible for sensory innervation of the scalp, face and mouth, and damage or disease to this nerve may result in sensory loss, pain or both. >85% of cases of Trigeminal Neuralgia are of the classic type known as Classical Trigeminal Neuralgia (CTN), while the remaining cases can be separated to secondary Trigeminal Neuralgia (STN). STN is thought to be initiated by multiple sclerosis or a space-occupying lesion affecting the trigeminal nerve, whereas the leading cause of CTN is known to be compression of the trigeminal nerve in the region of the dorsal root entry zone by a blood vessel. There is no guaranteed cure for the condition of Trigeminal Neuralgia, but there are several treatment options that can give relief. In this chapter, we review the common neuralgias occurring within the oral and maxillofacial region with special emphasis on Trigeminal Neuralgia. We will discuss the historical evolution of treatment including the medical and surgical modalities with the use of current literature and newer developments. It has been highlighted that the first line of treatment for trigeminal neuralgia is still pharmacological treatment, with Carbamazepine and Oxcarbazepine being the first choice. Possible surgical methods of treatment are discussed within this chapter including modalities such as Microvascular Decompression, Gamma Knife Radiosurgery and Peripheral Neurectomy. As an OMF surgeon, it is important to obtain a good clinical history to rule out other pathology including dental focus. Many clinicians involved ranging from primary care dentists and doctors to secondary care (neurologists, Oral Medicine, OMFS, etc.) to deliver the appropriate first course of action, which is the medical management. The management of TN patients should be carried out in a multidisciplinary setting to allow the patients to choose the best-suited option for them. It is also important to set up self-help groups to enable them to share knowledge and information for themselves and their family members for the best possible outcomes.

Abstract The approach applied in various research papers that model compressor shock losses is valid only for certain types of airfoil cascades operating in a narrow range of working conditions. Lately, more general shock loss models have been established that cover a wider variety of airfoils and operating regimes. However, owing to the complexity of the studied matter, the majority of such models are, to a certain extent, presented only in a descriptive manner. The lack of specific details can affect the end results when such a model is utilized since improvisation cannot be avoided. Some models also apply complex numerical procedures that can slow the calculations and be a source of computational instability. In this research, an attempt has been made to produce an analytical shock loss model that is simple enough to be described in detail while being universal and robust enough to find wide application in the fields of design and performance analysis of transonic compressors and fans. The flexible description of airfoil geometry encompasses a variety of blade shapes. Both unchoked and choked operating regimes are covered, including a precise prediction of choke occurrence. The model was validated using a number of numerical test cases.

This study used a numerical model, validated by wind tunnel tests and hot wire anemometer/resistance thermometer measurements, to determine the heat loss to the air stream over the plate as a function of wind speed, suction velocity, and plate geometry. Wellhead choke valves, frequently used to control oil and gas flow rates from producing wells in the petroleum industry, may experience loss of material due to the impingements of solid particles within the extraction fluids. This phenomenon, called impact erosion, is a serious concern to engineers, as it can result in loss of performance or even failure of the devices. Being capable to identify the valve components which are most vulnerable to impact erosion and provide quantitative estimation of the useful life of the chokes under actual production conditions may open the way to improved design and maintenance. The present contribution focuses on the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics techniques for predicting the impact erosion of a choke valve working in severe slurry conditions. The in-house erosion prediction library E-CODE, developed within the authors’ research group and illustrated in previous works, was employed to model the complex phenomena occurring in the valve. The good agreement between the numerical estimates and the outcomes of a test performed in the Hydraulic Laboratory of Politecnico di Milano indicated that, given the composition of the slurry environment and the operation condition of the valve, it is possible to estimate with reasonable accuracy the erosion characteristics of the device. This will allow gathering useful information for improving the scheduled maintenance of the production systems and the design of heavy-duty equipment.

Although a meanline code solves simple algebraic equations, some difficulties arise in flows near choked condition. Using simplified 0-dimensional (0D) models, it is shown which flow variable drives this phenomena (total or meridional Mach number) depending on the boundary conditions. It is commented as well how the choked condition is modified depending on the loss coefficient used. Then, a novel numerical method based on a bisection approach is proposed to solve meanline equations. A simple method to enlarge speed lines obtained by the mean-line solver is also described. Finally, the performance map of a single-stage axial compressor is computed and compared with experimental data to show the capabilities of the proposed approach.

Trailing edge loss is one of the main sources of loss for transonic turbine blades, contributing typically 1/3 of their total loss. Transonic trailing edge flow is extremely complex, the basic flow pattern is understood but methods of predicting the loss are currently based on empirical correlations for the base pressure. These correlations are of limited accuracy. Recent findings that the base pressure and loss can be reasonably well predicted by inviscid Euler calculations are justified and explained in this paper. For unstaggered choked blading it is shown that there is is a unique relationship between the back pressure and the base pressure and any calculation that conserves mass, energy and momentum should predict this relationship and the associated loss exactly. For realistic staggered blading which operates choked but with subsonic axial velocity there is also a unique relationship between the back pressure and the base pressure (and hence loss) but the relationship cannot be quantified without knowing a further relationship between the base pressure and the average suction surface pressure downstream of the throat. Any calculation that conserves mass, energy and momentum and also predicts this average suction surface pressure correctly will again predict the base pressure and loss. Two dimensional Euler solutions do not predict the suction surface pressure exactly because of shock smearing but nevertheless seem to give reasonably accurate results.

A reduced-order through-flow program has been developed at the Lund Institute of Technology. The goal of the work was to develop and verify a program suitable for scientific studies of axial turbines. The program has built-in capability for multiple choked stages, and turbine cooling, as well as flexible modules for state, losses, deviation, and blockage. The code uses Matlab™ as a platform for numerics, pre- and post-processing. The turbine modules are available from the Institute free of charge for scientific use. Matlab is a commercially available mathematical package and is used as a numerical tool by many universities and companies. Today, several codes are available for turbine analysis at different levels. Most of the codes are proprietary and not available outside the companies that have developed them. There are, however, commercially available codes, but the user does not normally have accesses to the source code. This poses serious problems when such codes are used for scientific studies, and open easily modified code is indeed a desirable feature. The present paper describes in detail the calculation methods used to simulate performance of a cooled and choked turbine at off-design conditions. The algorithms necessary for finding the turbine choke point will, for example, be described in detail. The way in which the loss, deviation (including secondary and tip clearance), and blockage are included in a quasi 1-D calculation environment is also presented. The code is suitable for further development (e.g. streamline curvature through-flow), since it is based on modules for e.g. state, combustion, loss, deviation, diffuser, numerics, and in-and output data processing. It is fairly easy to transform the Matlab program into e.g. Fortran. However, the use of the original platform simplifies plotting of turbine characteristics, velocity triangles, etc. The program is validated against test-rig data from an industrial two-stage power turbine.

This study evaluates the demand for truck-only toll lanes on Southern California freeways with owner–operator truck drivers. The study implemented the stated preference survey method to estimate the value placed by drivers on time, reliability, and safety measures using various scenarios geared towards assessing those values. The project team met face-to-face with owner- operator truck drivers near the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to understand the drivers’ perspectives regarding truck-only toll lanes on Southern California freeways. A data set containing 31 survey responses is obtained and used for statistical data analysis using analysis of variable (ANOVA) and two sample t-tests. The analysis results showed that 75.27% of the owner– operator truck drivers responded are willing to pay toll fees when they choose routes. The tolerated average toll fees are $13.77/ hr and $12.82/hr for weekdays and weekends, respectively. The analysis results also showed that owner–operator truck drivers will take truck-only toll lanes when they take the routes used in four comparisons out of six comparisons according to the three measures such as values of time, reliability, and safety, despite sharing a common origin and destination. The highest toll fee per mile on any day that drivers are willing to pay when the main factor being compared is value of time is $0.31/mile or $18.35/hr. The toll fees associated with reliability and safety measures are $0.30/mile or $8.94/hr and $0.22/mile or $11.01/hr, respectively. These results are meaningful for legislators and transportation agencies as the behaviors and route choice characteristics of owner–operator truck drivers help them better understand the utility and demand for truck-only toll lanes.
