Abstract:
Presented dissertation is focused on commercial suburbanization in terms of the Prague agglomeration specific aspects and assessment of some of its impacts on the affected locations. The aim is to identify local economic structures from the perspective of commercial suburbanization and assess their level of socio-economic significance in the suburban zone of Prague and their influence on the design of local medium-term priorities. This objective is further specified in terms of the five partial aims and five hypotheses. Monitored spatial units are analyzed at the level of municipalities, administrative districts of municipalities with extended powers and districts of Prague-East and Prague-West. The work represents the first comprehensive attempt to assess the extent of commercial suburbanization in the suburban area of Prague by using index methods. With the use of indexes, impacts of commercial suburbanization have been evaluated, especially the level of local action of companies and the formation of local markets in those local areas. The analysis shows that there is a greater degree of formation of local labor markets compared to rather negligible degree of formation of local markets of goods and services. Local economic structures continue to shape significantly in the regional centers of lower category rather than in the suburban zone of Prague. Following part of the thesis analyzes the socio-economic situation in the selected suburbanized municipality and reflection of key aspects of suburbanization in its medium-term development priorities and brings also a generalization of the findings. For the performed analysis, data from the author's own surveys and available statistical databases were used.

Abstract:
Community and its ties to locality have been bothering sociologists and researchers since society has abandoned its traditional organization. Many of them considered positive and negative aspects of industrial and later modern society's influence on community sense and human relationships. This thesis will walk the reader through the influential writings on the topic of community, meaning of space and human relationships. Starting with the appreciation of traditional community, through worries about its disappearance, diminishing importance of local ties and ending with complete anonymity and individualization. The empirical part of this thesis brings up results of the research conducted in neighborhoods of Žiar nad Hronom, town in central Slovakia. Findings from the interviews were confronted with ideas of New Urbanism, basically confirming role of architecture design in neighbors' relationships. Intensity, frequency and quality of interaction among neighbors are thus influenced by factors of spatial design, length of residence and busyness of residents. Nature of the relationships among neighbors is far from ideal (as in traditional community) but people look for communities in wider sense, creating networks with people from other social circles than those bounded to a place.

Abstract:
Gaelic language revival is the focus of many linguists and anthropologists. There are many generalisations written about this subject. This study is primarily based on a case study of the Uig community on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. With the use of historical and current descriptions of the community, problems are outlined associated with the Gaelic language in this mainly Gaelic speaking community. Despite the high number of recorded Gaelic speakers in Uig (67%, Census 2001), I consider this not a true reflection of the number of people who can use Gaelic daily. There are still many families who underestimate and therefore undermine the status of their language, despite the official support of Gaelic Education by the Scottish Government. Interestingly, there is an evident passivity of parents to enrol their children into Gaelic-medium units at the Uig Primary School yet, many parents do consider Gaelic as part of their cultural heritage. In Uig, a rural area, the number of higher educated inhabitants is minimal. Very lately, a lack of housing, has appeared as a problem and the local Community Council must deal with it. Many of the people questioned in this study are witnessing the language shift towards English in their own families. There seems to be some progress towards a reversing language...

Abstract:
Since the 19th century, the processes of modernization, industrialization and urbanization have fundamentally impacted the spatial organization and the actual contents of social ties. In particular, the role of place of residence in everyday life has significantly changed. Compared to the past, the spatial distance is less relevant for maintenance of interpersonal ties and non-local social relations are of growing importance. This process has been recently enhanced by development of communication technologies and the Internet in particular. The Internet has transferred many social ties into virtual communities without any spatial reference. The dissertation deals with the consequences of the above indicated changes for the social environments in urban, suburban and rural localities and it is built on the geographic perspective of social network research. The theoretical framework of the research is based on combination of the concepts of social environment and the concept of local community. Further, the conceptualization of the study of local social environment is presented. In addition, the factors undermining the differentiated social environment and the character of community ties in various types of geographical contexts are discussed. The attention is also paid to the importance of population...

Abstract:
The main aim of this thesis is to describe and analyze the nature of relationships of the originally local community and see what impact online social networks have on these relationships. The local community in this study is represented by one class of selected pupils from the primary school Na Smetance in Prague 2. For the main analysis were used mainly qualitative research methods: survey questionnaires and structured interviews with members of the screened community. The results showed that the transformation can be seen not only in the fragmentation of the local community into smaller groups of individuals with strong ties, but also in the influence of online social network Facebook, where relationships among members of the originally local community are maintenained. The analysis of strength relations between former classmates suggests that social network created by Facebook is essentially generated by weak ties, which are however indispensable for the creation of social capital. This thesis has contributed to the further understanding of the recent local community development. Keywords: local community, online social networks, Facebook, locality of Prague 2, social capital

Abstract:
This thesis presents phenomenom of Local Exchange Trading Systems (LETS) in Czech republic. This thesis uses results of qualitative research made among administrators of individual systems. Data obtained from interviews are interpreted using methods of grounded theory. Central theme of this theory is the need of LETS and its contributions for studied communities. Studied systems unambiguously showed positive impact of LETS on creating of social relations and community building. Insufficiently there is developed economic level of LETS.In this course it seems, there are nowadays not ideal socio- economical conditions in the society for radically enlarging of LETS. It seems, there is not right time for LETS, but in the future it could be useful instrument of local developement. It was tested in several Czech and Slovak cases and each of them produced new piece of knowledge, that can be used in future. It can help to avoid of former faults and adapt to new conditions.

This thesis deals with the community schools in the Czech Republic and the possibilities of their development. Firstly, it defines basic concepts like community education in an international context and the notion of community schools itself. Secondly, it discusses certain theoretical assumptions and presuppositions as well as current challenges of development of the community schools. The research is based on a multiple case study and it describes the current situation of selected community schools. The current situation of the schools is compared to their situation and conditions six years ago. Basing on the diachronic comparison using the academic document "Analysis of environment in the Czech Republic and the possibility of the development of community schools" of 2008, the research revealed that community concepts in schools are almost unchanged. Finally, the work challenges possible causes of this stagnation of development. Its contribution is in addition to the design possibilities for further development of community schools in the Czech Republic. Further value added...

Abstract:
The thesis deals with cohousing; a concept of living based on common spaces and shared facilities. In the first phase, the aim is to provide a summary of the development of cohousing and other similar forms of housing in the world and also in Czechia. The second phase focuses on a concrete by cohousing inspired residential project located in the inner city of Prague. In the work it appears under the name Klidná. The second phase aims to find out what led the communication partners to choose Klidná as a new place of residence, how important role did the specific aspects based on cohousing played in the decision-making process and finally how are the ideas of this concept being fulfilled in everyday life of the inhabitants. The research is of a qualitative nature and the main method of data collection is realization of deep semi-structured interviews, which are subsequently evaluated on the basis of theoretical thematic analysis. Based on the study, none of the communication partners chose Klidná because of the concept of cohousing. They perceived the existence of common areas, small scale of the project or its spatial layout rather as a pleasant bonus. Abstract:
The topic of the thesis deals with everyday life in Podblanicko Region during the socialist era. This is a local research that tries to show the memories of rural people on the period of normalization, defined by the 70s and 80s of the 20th century, in terms of food, clothing and housing. The research deals with the strategies, tactics and improvisations of the inhabitants of this region in the period of socialism, among other things focused on the lack of required goods in shops, poor supply, searching for not very high-quality construction materials and fashionable clothes. Apart from individual expressions, it deals with community style that inherently belongs to the rural population. The era of socialism is strongly ingrained in the mind of the people who lived at that time. It is clear from many sources that before the year 1989 people in the countryside did not live just meaningless lives, remarked and emptied by a totalitarian regime. In many cases, they tried to ignore the regime or they just were not interested in it. In their everyday life they created values, which were more important to them. However, they were able to realize the values mostly only partially. In order to achieve the things they considered important, their ingenuity, strategy and tactics were essential. A life in the...
