Full textThe purpose of this thesis was to study the origin of the local news in local newspapers. Do the news originate mostly from the police, the municipality, from press releases or from the reporters own ideas? We also wanted to find out what kind of content predominated in texts with its origin in press releases respectively the reporters own ideas. Of course we also wanted to find out if there were any similarities or differences between the two studied newspapers.
We used a type of constructed week, but with non random selection instead of random. We chose one of each weekday the newspapers were published and studied the news covered in the papers that specific day. We talked over the phone with the news editors and the reporters and simply asked them about the origin of each news text separately.
The results showed that every fourth text originates from the police, and that police news often ends up as news items rather than articles. We also came to the conclusion that local newspapers use fewer press releases than earlier research has shown. Only one sixth of the news studied originates from press releases, which is less than we thought it would be. News with its origin in advertisements was less often found.
News with its origin in the reporters own ideas deal with various subjects. A text that is written on the basis of a press release on the other hand is often about some kind of event and has almost always a very positive tone. We could not notice any remarkable difference between the two studied newspapers.

Full textSince the eighteenth century user contribution has been a crucial part of newspaper production. Without the participation from the public there hasn’t been a newspaper at all. The professionalization of the publicist role became the starting point who changed how people valued user contribution. Societal change and the technical development has then led to the society we have today – a place where media organizations find themselves in a greater need for user participation to survive. The purpose of this study is therefore to examine how three local news papers reason about and react to user generated content and also to find out what possibilities the users have to participate. Thru semi structured interviews with the legally responsible publisher for each news paper and two journalists from each editorial staff our result shows that the news papers have a positive attitude towards user generated content in general. The informants say that the technological development have been both an improvement and inhibitory in the relationship to the readers. They believe in an increased cooperation in the future but at the same time emphasize the fact that user generated content can’t be allowed to take too much place and become a rival to the journalistic material. The informants also say that the knowledge they posses thru their journalistic education is the main core in their work as well as in the idea and function of the news paper. That is the way it should remain. We use terms and theories about the public sphere, participation, media convergence and the journalistic profession in our discussion.

This thesis was written in co-operation with the newspaper publicist organization ”Tidningen I skolan” and is based on a quantitative survey. The object of this thesis is to try to answer “What are the youth’s attitudes towards local newspapers in Värmland?” The survey asked questions about background, media habits, and expectations regarding the future. The population was limited to high school-students and the survey was handed out and collected during one visit to each of the classes.
Generally speaking, the respondents have a rather positive image of their local newspapers. A majority of them believe they’ll subscribe sometime in the future. At the same time, however, they predict a coming downturn for local newspapers. Presently, television is the number one source for news for our surveyed population, with local papers second. Asked to predict their own consumption ten years from now, internet-based news will have pushed print media down to third. But television is still on top.
Only a third of our respondents feel that their local paper caters to their own demographic, while hardly anyone doubted that grown-ups were a target group. When we asked them to appraise their local paper’s different characteristics, most were either cautiously positive or indifferent. The local newspapers in Värmland are, according to the answers we saw, neither good or bad looking, neither reliable or unreliable, and so on… The results hint at what is facing the local papers. If not their own demise, then at the very least a difficult challenge.

Full textThe purpose of this study was to describe how media, in the form of a local newspaper Länstidningen, portrays social services in Södertälje. To fulfill the purpose we took as our point of departure a critical discourse analysis where we used tools from Faircloughs three-dimensional model to analyse the language used in the newspaper articles. Based on our main results, we were able to distinguish four discourses, the collaborative discourse, the financial discourse, the discourse on working methods and routines and the discourse of work environment. We also took help of social constructionism as the theory to contextualize the discourses. The results showed a relatively consistent use of language and what was prominent was that descriptions of the social services' working methods and routines were often omitted, in combination with the fact that facts and background information seldom occurred. Overall, we were able to distinguish one-sided and negative reporting on social services.

Full textFolkbladet is a daily newspaper in Norrköping with a strong local touch whose subscribers are mostly men interested in sports. In an attempt to broaden its readership, since 2009 Folkbladet publishes a magazine called Trend which targets women aged 20-50 years. This magazine in the form of a lifestyle magazine for women with a local touch is about fashion, beauty, interior design and travel. This free magazine is published four times a year and is distributed to every household in Norrköping and its surroundings. No target group analysis has been done to identify which content or design the readers would appreciate. Trend also lack a clear structure that could increase recognition and provide guidance through the contents. The objective of this paper is to examine what women aged 20-50 years in Norrköping and its surroun- dings ask of the content and design in a free lifestyle magazine, as well as to find out how well the magazine Trend meets these requirements and the established standards within the magazine industry. Based on this objective the following questions were formulated: What type of content does the target group find desirable in a free lifestyle magazine? What does the audience ask of the design in such a magazine? How well does Trend magazine meet the target group’s requirements and the established standards that exist within the magazine industry? To meet the objective and answer the questions, the current content and design of Trend has been described, combined with a target group survey in which qualitative interviews were conducted with six respondents from the target group: women aged 20-50 years, living in Norrköping and its surroun- dings. The results of the current state description has been compared with the results of the target group survey, as well as with the established standards in the literature on magazine design. The analysis shows that Trend only partially meets both the target group’s requirements and the established standards. The content covers some of the areas demanded by the target group: fashion, beauty, interior design and travel, and it has the local touch that the target group finds important. But the target group would also like to read about people with an interesting story, get information about local events, and find simple recipes in the magazine. To reache a larger share of the target group these topics should be considered as additonal content. Out of the already existing topics, interior design and travel are the ones most appreciated by the target group and should therefore be given more editorial space in the magazine. The analysis also shows that Trend needs to adapt both the content and design so as not to be perceived as entirely advertising. The editorial content is confused with advertising due to the way the texts are written and because the design of the editorial pages are not consistent. One way to create greater clarity about the different types of content is to structure the magazine according to a model with a front, a middle and a back section. These sections should have different types of texts of different lengths, and distinct design that distinguishes them from each other. Layout templates and style sheets are a great help for distinguis- hing the different parts. This is something that Trend currently lack and that should be implemented.

Full textThe aim of this essay is to see how the IOGT, local politicians and the local newspaper acted in the city of Hedemora in Sweden in connection with the referendum held in 1922 whether or not to ban the use of alcoholic beverages. To accomplish this I have examined protocols from local IOGT-groups, the town council and the local newspaper Södra Dalarnes tidning. I find that the local IOGT not only worked with the issue of alcohol but served as an institution that deepened democracy and education in the local community through discussions, study circles and applying pressure on local politicians. The locally elected bodies in turn were generally in favour of the good work the IOGT did, although not always overwhelmingly so. Many of the local politicians that handled the issues of alcohol were themselves active members in organisations promoting absolutism. The local newspaper tried to be balanced in reporting about the issue involved, but as a whole they gave a little more space to those voices that were against a complete ban on alcohol in the referendum.

Title: Where does the news that you read in your localpaper come from?
Number of pages: 45 (57 including enclosures)
Author: Elin Rantakokko

Period: Fall of 2007 University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Information Science, Uppsala University Purpose/Aim: This paper has the aim to make a systematic survey of the information source and channels that local newspapers use. How much space they get in the paper and how the newspaper works with these sources and channels. The front pages of the newspaper are going to be compared with the insides of the newspaper. The reports roles in the making of news are also examined.
Material/method: To be able to answer my questions I’m going to use three different methods. An observation on the papers morning meetings, an quantitative content analysis of five numbers of an local paper and four interviews with two news managers and two reporters on the paper.
Main results: The paper makes most of the news by them as well as them receives many of the tip-offs from private persons. These are ranked as news that cost a lot of money to make for the paper. In the paper internal and external sources get a half each. The local paper have many information channels that the public can use to tip the paper. The two channels that are used the most are e-mailing and the telephone. The front pages of the newspaper indicate very well on the material in the inside of the newspaper. The reports does not come with own ideas as much as they would like to, they mean that the most ideas for articles comes during another job.
Keywords: Local newspapers, information channels, information source, news value, news gathering, news institution.

Full textThe aim of this study was to analyze the discourse concerning the planned Moomin park in Karlstad in the letters to the editor of the local newspaper, Nya Wermlands-Tidningen. Today, Skutberget is a place for swimming, outdoor life and exercise. In 2017, Karlstad Municipality presented a feasibility study on a possible establishment of a Moomin park at the location. We analyzed 20 letters to the editor published during the period September 2017 to September 2018. We have, through a critical discourse analysis, examined what has been written about the subject in the letter to the editor section, in order to further see how it relates to Karlstad municipality's brand platform. Building a brand to promote your own city has become a central part for most Swedish municipalities when creating an image. In order to create a successful brand for your city, the municipality also needs the help of its residents, who are expected to spread a positive image of the city. This is called word-of-mouth. Anyone can write freely about their thoughts and opinions regarding local issues in the letters to the editor. A lot of people have expressed their views on the planned Moomin park and it is clear that there is a conflict regarding the project. We have found there are two sides of the conflict, one that says yes to the planned theme park and one that says no. Those who advocate a Moomin park make their opponents, such as other local residents and various interest groups, out to be negative, narrow-minded and retrogressive. Those who strive to stop the construction of the park, however, choose to focus their criticism towards the municipality and the municipal politicians. The municipality as well as the politicians are accused of being undemocratic, greedy for power and false. Our analysis has shown that what is written in the letters to the editor does not agree with Karlstad municipality's brand building, regardless of the writers being positive or negative to the Moomin park. This is because Karlstads municipality describes the city as “open and welcoming” in their brand platform. The city has been working with their place branding for a long period of time and has been praised by several experts for their ability to create a positive image of the city. Previous research has shown that the residents must be able to identify themselves with the image of the city they live in, otherwise there is a risk that the dissatisfaction toward the municipality will increase. When the plans about a Moomin park became available to everyone, it may be possible that some of the residents no longer recognized themselves in the new image that the municipality communicated. This could explain why the conflict concerning the Moomin park and Skutberget has become as extensive as it has.

Full textThe journalistic profession has historically been a highly esteemed occupation which attached great trust from the public. The trust was based on an exclusive access to news sources and journalists' willingness to live up to the classic journalistic ideals. In today’s media climate, however, the public has greater possibilities to make demands on journalists themselves, on issues such as publishing speed and media content. This also leads to a change in the daily work of source management. The theoretical foundation of this study is based on theories regarding the American media climate. These theories conclude that today’s media climate makes the exercise of proper source verification more difficult. Kovach and Rosenstiel notes that the journalism that is characterized by good source verification ("Journalism of verification") are increasingly replaced by a journalism where messages only are forwarded between the medias ("Journalism of assertion"). McManus states in his marketing theory that journalism today is similar to a product which leads to an increasing influence of capitalistic arguments when it comes to the selection of sources. This leads to a standardized journalism where only influential sources, those several researchers name as "elite sources”, is used to create the foundation of news. This is a case study with the purpose to investigate journalists’ use of and trust in their sources, and the impact this has on the source management in two local Swedish newspapers. The selected newspapers are Nya Wermlands-Tidningen (NWT) and Nya Lidköpings-Tidningen (NLT). The study will, by qualitatively interviewing four journalists on each newspaper, investigate how well they incorporate their journalistic ideals in the everyday work of source verification. The study wishes to locate how, how carefully, and on what parameters the journalists attempt to work with their sources to reassure a news content that withstands the requirements of “good journalism”. The result of our findings is, amongst others, that journalists tend to see scrutinous source verification as an important part of their work in theory. Their view is consistent in that all involved parts of a case must be involved in the article. Even if this is the case it is here that differences between the two research objects have been found. The differences exist mainly because of the different markets the two newspapers compete in, and the difference in the publication environment this creates. This leads, in certain cases, to newspaper articles being published before all sources are incorporated or sufficiently verified.
