Abstract:
AbstractIn recent years, some lokapāla statues which might be carved in the Liang dynasty of the Southern Dynasties are unearthed in Chengdu area, the features of which have some differences from that of the lokapāla statues of the northern system found in Khotan, Dunhuang and other areas; they have some similarities with the early lokapāla statues of the Northern Wei dynasty, but also have some differences. The early lokapālas in the Buddhist scriptures have only names and titles with little concrete descriptions; the archaeologically discovered lokapāla statues enriched our understandings of this motif.

<p>The Wayang Kulit show in Java and Bali or in other regions in Indonesia besides functioning to complement the religious ceremony, as ruwatan, also give the noble values of pertinent relating to human life and spectacle with a very high aesthetic. Dharma Pewayangan is a guide (law, reference, ordinance, obligation, guidance) for puppeteer or dalang in carrying out his duties while performing Wayang Kulit. The understanding and implementation of dharma pewayangan teachings by dalang<br />is a must and obligation because if deviate from the teachings will get the curse of Sang Hyang Catur Lokapala. Dalang uses a spell before the show begins until the end of the show. The spell function in the Wayang Kulit show is as a plea to God, self-guard, awakening the taksu, neutralizing bhuta-kala, and making tirta.</p>

Abstract:
<p>The Javanese leather puppet use myths about the gods, prophets, spirits, and people of the ancient time, besides the texts of Lokapala, Arjunasasrabahu, Ramayana, and Mahabarata to teach prudence and to enable men to respond to the happenings of their natural life, or “daya-daya kekuatan alam” (van Peursen, 1989: 37). These myths contain the moral philosophy about the relation of men with other men, with nature, and with God, determined by a pattern of thought which orients itself toward the principles of harmony and balance. The paper highlights the story of the birth of Semar, or Laire [in English: la-ee-ray} Semar, which shows how the Javanese morality was constructed and power in the Javanese conception implemented. Semar, god in human form, reveals the essence of power a king should have, and teaches that power is a godly characteristic used to enhance goodness. This concept is against the belief that power is ruthlessness and domineering that is hidden in good-look, princely manner and power. His ugly looking reflects the importance of inner strength which is generous and kind, over handsome outward look, but has a mean heart As an expression of arts, the puppeteers hold an important role to distribute the stories that have philosophical meaning to the audience when the leather puppet show was conducted. A puppeteer, after all, carries a holy role.</p>

Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to analyze aspects of the relationship between Buddhism, indigenous beliefs and people through the names of lokapālas in early Buddhist literature, and especially the names of the three great kings, Dhataraṭṭha, Virūḷha (or Virūḷhaka), and Virūpakkha. The study revealed that the name of the three great kings, Dhataraṭṭha, Virūḷha (or Virūḷhaka), and Virūpakkha, may reflect traces of earlier or contemporaneous indigenous beliefs and people who had cultural encounters with Buddhism. The indigenous beliefs consist of the nāga cult, belief in spirits, early practice of urn-burials and belief in the soul or spirit of the dead rising from the grave, primitive beliefs of Aryan people and, nāga as a tribe. Buddhism shows an attempt to incorporate these beliefs and people into the Buddhist cosmology by elevating some local gods, indigenous beliefs and tribal people to divine status, such as lokapālas, who become chieftains of the gandhabbas, the nāgas, and the kumbhaṇḍas, in order to show acceptance of earlier or contemporaneous indigenous beliefs and tribes. These findings may help to improve understanding more of the sociology of early Buddhism.

Abstract:
