Abstract:
Based upon two years of ethnographic fieldwork in London, England, which incorporated nearly 200 interviews with gang members, gang associates, and police officers, among others, this thesis addresses three questions presently unresolved in the street gangs literature: What is the business of gangs? How are gangs organised? And how do gangs recruit? With regard the business of gangs, this thesis illustrates how recreation, crime, enterprise, and extra-legal governance represent sequential stages in the evolutionary cycle of London’s street gangs. Gang member testimony emphasises how gangs typically begin life as neighbourhood-based peer groups, but also how, in response to external threats and financial commitments, gangs grow to incorporate street-level drugs distribution businesses that very much resemble the multi-level marketing structure of direct-sales companies. People join gangs to make money, achieve status, and obtain protection. Gangs engage in turf wars, acquire violent resources, and develop hierarchical structures in order to maintain provision of these desirable goods and services. Gang organisation, in turn, becomes a function of gang business. To better understand the nature and extent of gang organisation, this thesis moves on to discuss the presence of subgroups, hierarchy and leadership, pecuniary and non-pecuniary incentives, rules, responsibilities, and restrictions, and consequences for absconding within gangs. It further presents how, in order to convey reputation and achieve intimidation, gangs seek association with elements of popular culture that help promote their image. Finally, through the novel application of signalling theory to the gang recruitment process, this thesis demonstrates how gangs face a primary trust dilemma in their uncertainty over the quality of recruits. Given that none of the trust-warranting properties for gang membership can be readily discovered from observation, gangs look for observable signs correlated with these properties. Gangs face a secondary trust dilemma in their uncertainty over the reliability of signs because certain agents (e.g., police informants, rival gang members, and adventure-seekers) have incentives to mimic them. To overcome their informational asymmetry gangs thus screen for signs that are too costly for mimics to fake but affordable for the genuine article. The thesis concludes with a discussion of gang desistance and intervention in the context of escalating youth violence in London.

Abstract:
Focussing on the 'long 1970s' (1968-1980), this thesis offers a new account of the emergence of performance forms, including Happenings, participatory art, performance art, and performances for the camera, in visual art and related contexts at the ICA. The research is driven by two central aims: firstly, to create space for discourse about women artists and feminist concerns in art in the UK, and secondly, to build a feminist methodology and historiography that allows for a re-thinking of performance events and approaches to interpreting them. My research involves methods drawn from performance studies, history of art and visual studies, cultural history, and feminist theory. Chapters are organised around works by important UK-based artists including Carlyle Reedy, Rose Finn-Kelcey, Cosey Fanni Tutti, and David Medalla, as well as international visitors Carolee Schneemann and Charlotte Moorman. Initially focussing on historical 'recovery' of performances by women artists in order to challenge received or dominant histories of performance, I then shift over the course of the thesis towards reflecting on feminist implications and effects of my historiographical approach. Here the ICA functions as an organising principle rather than a central subject, and so while research begins with the ICA Collection held at Tate Archive, the scope of the study is also broadened to include other sites and archival repositories. As a methodological counterpoint to this, I also question and critique the limits of institutional and archival representation, and conduct interviews with artists and arts professionals. Considered through the lens of each case study, I argue that the 1970s, as a period which saw new performance forms emerge dialogically alongside feminist practice, is a rich area of research for thinking about pre-histories of live art in the UK, as well as questions of identity, identification, and diversity which resonate into the present.

Trenholm, Susan. "Using complexity theory to understand the organisational response to resurgent tuberculosis across London." Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the organisational response to resurgent tuberculosis (TB) across London. Tuberculosis in modern London reached its lowest recorded rate in 1987, but since that time there have been almost annual year on year increases, with the rate climbing by 50% between 1999 and 2009 alone. The rate of drug resistant TB is also increasing at a worrying pace. This research uses a novel complexity theory approach to analysis but empirically finds that positive features of complexity theory were crowded out by an embedded New Public Management paradigm. This study is qualitative and narrative-based, using complexity theory as the main theoretical framework, but also applies the theory of professional dominance and the paradigm of New Public Management (NPM) as possible alternatives. Institutionalism/archetype theory and Kingdon’s (1995) theory of public policy development are also introduced to help theorise the findings. This research found that complexity theory offers a useful, but partial, means of understanding the system responsible for TB control in London. Self-organisation, the key feature of complexity theory, was evident, but often resulted in maintaining the status quo and resisting change, in addition to infrequently resulting in innovation. The effects of highly embedded NPM practices and principles were wide-spread and powerful; its relentless preoccupation with risk aversion and control may have thwarted potentially positive benefits from self-organisation at the system level. Further, extensive NPM-inspired fragmentation almost eliminated co-adaptation (another complexity theory precept) by the TB control system to its changing environment, and reduced system fitness and robustness. TB control was also found to occupy a lowly place in terms of public health priorities. Finally, and rather surprisingly, there was little evidence of professional (medical) dominance observed. Medical consultants, stretched for time and faced with competing priorities, often acquiesced to NHS management efforts.

Morgan, Emily Kathryn. ""True Types of the London Poor": Adolphe Smith and John Thomson's Street Life in London." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/255192.

Full text
Abstract:
In February 1877, publisher Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington began release of a monthly serial called Street Life in London, by journalist Adolphe Smith and photographer John Thomson. The work aimed to reveal to readers, through novel use of photographic illustrations combined with essays, the conditions of a life of poverty in London. Appearing also as a book in late 1877, Street Life in London did not achieve commercial success in either format and was cancelled after just one year's run. This dissertation aims to demonstrate how Street Life in London was subject to and shaped by a variety of interests and forces, to understand why it failed, and to place it within the overarching contexts of Victorian social exploration and street typology. Historians of photography have justifiably praised Street Life in London as a foundational work of socially-conscious photography, John Thomson's images breaking--sometimes radically--with prior models for depiction of the poor. But they have tended to regard it primarily as a book rather than a serial, and primarily as a book of photographs, not a publication in which text and image work in concert. This dissertation examines the vital contributions of both Adolphe Smith and John Thomson, combining close reading of images, text and sequencing throughout the serial publication to treat the work as a photo-text. It reinscribes the work within the contexts of both authors' overall careers, relates it to prior pictorial and literary models for representation of poverty, and demonstrates the roles of other players such as the publisher and critics in shaping the publication. Ultimately this study places Street Life in London within a matrix of Victorian discourses on poverty, photography, and typology, among others, demonstrating that it was contingent, conflicted, and ultimately incomplete: a flawed but fascinating commentary on the complex and multifarious Victorian era from which it emerged.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a gap in the existing empirical literature on the investment decision of banks in financial centres. While there are empirical tests with micro analytic data on the investment decisions of banks in the United States and Japan, this is not the case of London. This study empirically tests the factors affecting the investment decision of banks in the City of London through a unique set of interviews with senior managers in the industry and ~ls in the mentioned gap in the existing empirical literature. The study puts the existing applications of the theory of investment decisions of firms in foreign markets to banks into a logically consistent sequence and brings in other factors from real option theory. In particular, it integrates the existing applications within a profit- maximisation model of the behaviour of banks in financial centres. The hypotheses are derived through comparative static analysis. The empirical findings, in agreement with the profit maximisation theory, broadly conform to the existing empirical findings and suggest the existence of strong option effects in the investment decision of banks in the City of London. To date applications of real option theory have found options of a contractual nature derived from informal arrangements in joint ventures to have great importance in the context of the investment decisions of manufacturing enterprises. The empirical findings of this study suggest that options of a non-contractual nature have greater importance in the context of the investment decision of banks in foreign markets.

Barratt, Claire. "An investigation into the cultural meanings of contemporary mourning and memento mori jewellery (London 1980-2008)." Thesis, University of the Arts London, 2010. http://ualresearchonline.arts.ac.uk/9609/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis surveys various types of jewellery that reference death which emerged between 1980-2008. It compares them to their historical precedents, particularly mourning and memento mori jewellery, which had fallen out of use by the early twentieth century. The return of this imagery in late twentieth century jewellery might suggest a revival of older, obsolete rituals of death and mourning, and imply changes in popular attitudes towards bereavement and grief, even a new cultural acceptance of death and mortality. However, the contemporary meanings of the new jewellery appeared to be more varied, wide-ranging and ambiguous than those of their historical precedents. The thesis examines some of the changed meanings and altered contexts for the new mourning and memento mori jewellery, by surveying a broad range of jewellery that is normally studied separately within different academic disciplines. It is sourced from the funeral industry, subculture, studio jewellery, pop memorabilia, mass market and avant-garde fashion. In addition, the thesis examines the narratives and meanings that jewellery is imbued with by individuals following bereavement or illness. It addresses questions of how, or whether, items of jewellery differ from other forms of material and visual culture because they are worn objects. Throughout the thesis, jewellery is the key focus and it is analysed using methods from material culture studies, design history and sociology. Together, the breadth of sources and interdisciplinary approach demonstrate that jewellery worn to signify death, memory and mourning is part of a continuum of the wider symbolic and sentimental value of jewellery. The thesis shows a new separation between the functions of mourning and memento mori in jewellery; the absence of an unambiguous, recognisable visual language of death; and a greater, but more private, degree of individualisation of grief in contemporary mourning jewellery than that found in earlier periods.

Abstract:
Evidence has shown that Multisystemic Therapy (MST) an intensive family- and community-based intervention has been particularly effective in the treatment of youth with antisocial behaviour from ethnically diverse backgrounds. Although the process of change within MST has been explored, there is a dearth of research in looking at this for families from ethnic minority backgrounds. The current research aimed to address this gap by exploring the experiences of a sample of London based caregivers who had completed an MST intervention. A qualitative approach was adopted, using grounded theory methodology to explore ethnic minority caregiver experiences of MST and generate a model of the processes of engagement and change based on participants' accounts. Seven semi-structured interviews were carried out with caregivers from two London sites. The emergent model consisted of seven interacting theoretical codes. Three of these codes were organised around the process of engagement; deciding to engage with MST, becoming therapeutically aligned and considering cultural difference, and four related to the process of change; working within a safe and trusting relationship, therapist acting as cultural broker, empowering the parent and increased communication within and outside the family. The author makes novel suggestions relating to the specific mechanisms that are thought to underlie the process of engaging with MST, and highlights the importance of considering cultural difference in the initial stages of the MST intervention.

Full text
Abstract:
The financial misconduct and corruption at the very top of the class system that in 2008 caused the collapse of the world economy saw no reaction from the criminal justice system. In contrast, the 2011 English Riots at the bottom rungs of society, estimated to have caused 200 million pounds of damages, produced a ruthless response from the judiciary where sentences were almost treble the usual rate. Politicians were quick to condemn the rioters as mere wanton criminals and framing their actions within a behavioural explanation calling for severe punishments. My thesis’s aim is to show that it was instead decades of neoliberal policies that pushed these people to vent their frustration through rioting. Their ensuing anomic ethic is understood by considering the rioters’ actions through the prism of both Strain Theory and Institutional Anomie Theory. To contextualise their place within today’s capitalist society I categorized them within an emerging social class: The Precariat. Through a qualitative analysis of 17 interviews’ extracts, all that transpired was their desires to be active consumers by grabbing what they could; the riots were merely an excuse to bypass the structurally imposed limits that stood before the desired higher social status. This research speaks of an increasingly unequal society, which positions individual economic success above collective well-being. These disturbances are symptoms of a deep seated malaise and of a stripped-down manifestation of what neoliberalism really is. To reverse it, we ought to implement holistic socioeconomic policies that empower people through the creation of secure and well-paid jobs, encourage collectivism over individualism and that promote better education towards sustainable living and happiness.

Abstract:
Background: Investors around the globe have debated, for more than 40 years, about whether the dividend yield has an influence on a stock’s price or not. There are different theories supporting both sides. These theories, however, often simplify the real world and therefore may not apply fully. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to conduct empirical research on the complicated dividend policy topic and find out whether the dividend yield influences a stock’s price by testing for its effect on stock price volatility. This result finds evidence of whether investors disregard, or regard, any dividend payments and if it influences investors decisions when purchasing stock. Method: We take the top valued companies in the non-financial sector from the LSE and the Euronext between the years 2008 and 2017. We then run a Fixed Effect Model regression taking some of their reported values including their dividend yield and their stock price volatility. Conclusion: Our results indicate that the dividend yield a company pays stockholders has a positive influence on the stock price volatility, thus affecting the prices of stocks. These results counter the MM Theorem and are inconclusive with the main principles of the Bird in Hand Theorem by Gordon (1960) and Lintner (1962).

Park, J. "Spatial analysis of housing markets with land rent theory of political economy : the cases of London, Seoul and Los Angeles." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2011. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1335907/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study adopts Marxian land rent theory as a framework to understand the structure of house prices with explicit attention to labour reproduction in an urban context. It attempts to correct the misunderstandings in Marxian land rent theory and develop it for an urban context. The four categories of land rent of differential rent, differential rent 2, absolute rent, and monopoly rent are critically re-examined. Subsequently, the combination of absolute rent and differential rent is suggested as a general structure for land rents in an urban context. The dynamic mechanism of changes in land rents is explained with the concepts of emulation, differentiation and shift between groups of houses based on the structure of land rents. The process of the formation of housing submarkets has been examined for a practical preparation for empirical analysis and a theoretical basis for the subdivision of the housing market. Spatial submarkets are identified by focusing on the interactive relationship between residential spheres (a unit consisting of a centre of employment and the surrounding residential area). Sectoral submarkets are defined based on social and environmental features as well as the structural features of dwellings. For empirical analysis, three metropolitan cities were chosen: London as monocentric, Seoul as tri-centric and Los Angeles as polycentric. Empirical analysis has used commuting patterns and the contours of house prices as the criteria to identify spatial submarkets with the help of network analysis and GIS. Simple OLS regression analysis of house prices on the accessibility to centre was conducted in each identified submarket. The results were used to explore the structure of and the dynamic changes in land rents. A consistent structure of land rents was observed in each housing submarket across all three cities. The implication on the condition of labour reproduction was drawn out by interpreting the changes in land rents over a period of 10 years in each city. The analysis of London revealed a monocentric housing market structure and the suitability of commuting time over physical distance as an accessibility variable. In Seoul‟s case, the transition from tri-centric to monocentric housing market was observed and a comparative approach with rent and price data enriched the interpretation of the changes in the structure of the housing market. The impact of social and environmental features of the neighbourhood, such as class, ethnic concentration and negative externality, on house prices was highlighted in the analysis of Los Angeles.

Karytinos, Aristotle D. "A chaos theory and nonlinear dynamics approach to the analysis of financial series : a comparative study of Athens and London stock markets." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1999. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/51481/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation presents an effort to implement nonlinear dynamic tools adapted from chaos theory in financial applications. Chaos theory might be useful in explaining the dynamics of financial markets, since chaotic models are capable of exhibiting behaviour similar to that observed in empirical financial data. In this context, the scope of this research is to provide an insight into the role that nonlinearities and, in particular, chaos theory may play in explaining the dynamics of financial markets. From a theoretical point of view, the basic features of chaos theory, as well as, the rationales for bringing chaos theory to the attention of financial researchers are discussed. Empirically, the fundamental issue of determining whether chaos can be observed in financial time series is addressed. Regarding the latter, empirical literature has been controversial. A quite exhaustive analysis of the existing literature is provided, revealing the inadequacies in terms of methodology and the testing framework adopted, so far. A new "multiple testing" methodology is developed combining methods and techniques from the fields of both Natural Sciences and the Economics, most of which have not been applied to financial data before. A serious effort has been made to fill, as much as possible, the gap which results from the lack of a proper statistical framework for the chaotic methods. To achieve this the bootstrap methodology is adopted. The empirical part of this work focuses on the comparison of two markets with different levels of maturity; the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), an emerging market, and London Stock Exchange (LSE). Our aim is to determine whether structural differences exist in these markets in terms of chaotic dynamics. In the empirical level we find nonlinearities in both markets by the use of the BDS test. R/S analysis reveals fractality and long term memory for the ASE series only. Chaotic methods, such as the correlation dimension (and related methods and techniques) and the largest Lyapunov exponent estimation, cannot rule out a chaotic explanation for the ASE market, but no such indication could be found for the LSE market. Noise filtering by the SVD method does not alter these findings. Alternative techniques based on nonlinear nearest neighbour forecasting methods, such as the "piecewise polynomial approximation" and the "simplex" methods, support our aforementioned conclusion concerning the ASE series. In all, our results suggest that, although nonlinearities are present, chaos is not a widespread phenomenon in financial markets and it is more likely to exist in less developed markets such as the ASE. Even then, chaos is strongly mixed with noise and the existence of low-dimensional chaos is highly unlikely. Finally, short-term forecasts trying to exploit the dependencies found in both markets seem to be of no economic importance after accounting for transaction costs, a result which supports further our conclusions about the limited scope and practical implications of chaos in Finance.

Abstract:
During the past few years, the housing price has increased for both Sweden and the United Kingdom, and according to previous studies there can be many reasons for this development. The purpose of this study is to investigate the degree of differences and similarities between two housing markets. Specifically, this study explores how investors and buyers of housing acts on different markets, and how this changes the price development. The two regions this study focuses on are Greater Stockholm, in comparison with Greater London during the time period January 2005 until December 2018. The theories used are the Greater Fool theory and the Market Process theory, to analyze the result from the regressions run for this study. In the empirical study, time series were used, where several independent variables examined the potential connection to the housing price development. One time series was used for Greater Stockholm, and one time series for Greater London. The result of the study gave ambiguous indications, where most of the variables did not show statistical significance. This means that the change in these variables is not likely to affect the development of housing prices. While two variables for Greater London turned out to be statistically significant.

Abstract:

In addition, some students may not reach their full potential despite progressing satisfactorily. The purpose of this research was to investigate performance of King’s College London Dental Students in end-of-year examinations, as they progressed through their programme and to identify factors which may affect progression. A mixed-methods research design was employed including a longitudinal data analysis, questionnaires, focus groups and one-to-one interviews. BDS1 students perceived differences in volume of university work, compared to school, caused difficulties. Approximately, 66% of BDS5 students progressed without resitting an end-of-year examination and those that did most commonly cited family problems as a contributory cause. In a regression model using gender, perceived stress scores, accommodation factors and debt worries as explanatory variables, none were predictors of examination performance. There were fluctuations in performance, with at least 70% of students not remaining within the same top, middle or bottom third of their year group, as they progressed. There was a weak to moderate correlation (r = 0.33 to 0.55, p < 0.05) between performance at beginning and end of the programmes though more than 70% of the variance was not accounted for. The unaccounted variance may be accounted for by findings in the qualitative strand of this research in which the six interview themes emerged: study/supporting study, the dental programme, personal life, feelings, students’ behaviour/differences/interactions, and assessment. The importance of support to successful progression was a recurring topic. In conclusion the performance of most students, relative to their peers, fluctuated as they progressed through their programme. Inter-personal interactions appeared to have a major influence on progression and may explain much of the variation in performance at beginning and end of the programme.

Abstract:
This exploratory research project explores the production and use, and subsequent closure and eviction of the community-designed and managed Old Tidemill Wildlife Garden in Deptford – a predominantly working-class area in south-east London. This community garden played a key role in the lives of many local residents and its closure and subsequent demolition to make way for a large housing project drew a significant backlash from local residents which included protests, law-suits, and the occupation of the garden itself. Why this small, half-acre community garden garnered such a notable response is the main focus of and motivation for this research project. Using a combined-methods approach consisting of semi-structured interviews and participant observation, this research investigates what it was about Old Tidemill Wildlife Garden which resulted in this backlash, and why the local council’s decision to close it drew such a militant revolt from local community members. Combining the empirical results of this research with a deep inquiry into the concepts of space and power within urban theory, this thesis seeks to understand the rights working-class communities have to contribute to the production of public green space, and how such community-led contribution can impact on the space produced, both inside and outside the context of Old Tidemill Wildlife Garden and its former users.

Weeks, Douglas M. "Radicals and reactionaries : the polarisation of community and government in the name of public safety and security." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/3416.

Abstract:
The contemporary threat of terrorism has changed the ways in which government and the public view the world. Unlike the existential threat from nation states in previous centuries, today, government and the public spend much of their effort looking for the inward threat. Brought about by high profile events such as 9/11, 7/7, and 3/11, and exacerbated by globalisation, hyper-connected social spheres, and the media, the threats from within are reinforced daily. In the UK, government has taken bold steps to foment public safety and public security but has also been criticised by some who argue that government actions have labelled Muslims as the ‘suspect other'. This thesis explores the counter-terrorism environment in London at the community/government interface, how the Metropolitan Police Service and London Fire Brigade deliver counter-terrorism policy, and how individuals and groups are reacting. It specifically explores the realities of the lived experience of those who make up London's ‘suspect community' and whether or not counter-terrorism policy can be linked to further marginalisation, radicalism, and extremism. By engaging with those that range from London's Metropolitan Police Service's Counterterrorism Command (SO15) to those that make up the radical fringe, an ethnographic portrait is developed. Through that ethnographic portrait the ‘ground truth' and complexities of the lived experience are made clear and add significant contrast to the aseptic policy environment.

Abstract:
This research focuses on shopping centers and on the shopping and consuming experiences produced and undergone within these retail spaces in different cities and in different regions of the world. Although significant work has been done on this topic in developed economies, significantly less has been devoted to emerging economies and even less has been done in comparative terms. This work builds on the existing Consumer Culture Theory related literature and it attempts to address current gaps in this body of work, as well as to provide managerial recommendations based on research findings. It differentiates itself from previous research on shopping centers on four main aspects: (1) By studying the phenomenon of shopping centers in Latin America, a largely unexplored domain; (2) By adding a multicultural perspective to the body of research on consumer and shopping experiences at shopping centers through the study of cases in five different cities; (3) By establishing a process of case selection to provide a priori variability of cases; (4) By comparing on ¨continuum¨ (Carù & Cova, 2007; Roederer, 2008) the full array of shopping experiences: produced, undergone and co-driven (Csaba and Askegaard, 1999; Tsai, 2010) and assessing whether these experiences vary across locations as well as the possible causes of variation

Abstract:
Living in tune with nature means respecting the natural environment and realizing its power and the ways it manifests in daily life. This essay focuses on the ways in which respect for nature is expressed through animal imagery in Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, Mark Twain's "The Stolen White Elephant," Roughing It, and Pudd'nhead Wilson, and Jack London's The Call of the Wild. Each author encouraged readers to seek the benefits of nature in order to become better human beings, forge stronger communities, and develop a more unified nation and world. By learning from the positive example of the animals, we learn how to share our world with them and with each other.

Abstract:
In this thesis are shown developments in the random phase approximation (RPA) in the context of range-separated theories. We present advances in the formalism of the RPA in general, and particularly in the "dielectric matrix" formulation of RPA, which is explored in details. We show a summary of a work on the RPA equations with localized orbitals, especially developments of the virtual localized orbitals that are the "projected oscillatory orbitals" (POO). A program has been written to calculate functions such as the exchange hole, the response function, etc... on real space grid (parallelepipedic or of the "DFT" type) ; some of those visualizations are shown here. In the real space, we offer an adaptation of the effective energy denominator approximation (EED), originally developed in the reciprocal space in solid physics. The analytical gradients of the RPA correlation energies in the context of range separation has been derived. The formalism developed here with a Lagrangian allows an all-in-one derivation of the short- and long-range terms that emerge in the expressions of the gradient. These terms show interesting parallels. Geometry optimizations at the RSH-dRPA-I and RSH-SOSEX levels on a set of 16 molecules are shown, as well as calculations and visualizations of correlated densities at the RSH-dRPA-I level

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis provides the first comprehensive study of an eminent but oft-overlooked Victorian polymath, with the overarching aims of assessing his contributions to nineteenth-century intellectual life and of exploring the mutual relations between science and religion in his work. One of the towering figures of the Victorian scientific establishment, William Carpenter (1813-1885), F.R.S, was a famous physiologist and public figure. He is most remembered for his concept of 'unconscious cerebration' which contributed to the emergence of the disciplines of neurology and modern psychology, but Carpenter was also noted amongst his peers for his evolutionary approach to the study of the unicellular marine invertebrates known as the foraminifera. As a lifelong practicing Unitarian, Carpenter's outspoken support for evolutionary theory made him an exemplary advocate of the compatibility between rational thought and Christian belief amidst the Victorian debate about science and religion. As the Registrar of the University of London during its formative years, Carpenter also had a nationwide impact on the fortunes of scientific education and secondary education as a whole. Finally, as a populariser of science and public moralist, "Dr. Carpenter" was also well known to the Victorian public as one of the most outspoken critics of spiritualism, alleged paranormal phenomena, and superstition more generally. Nevertheless, no systematic study of Carpenter's work had until now been carried out, and the commonly held view that he lacked originality as a scientist had not been fully questioned. The current study therefore aims to review Carpenter's achievements and trace his intellectual legacy. As an intellectual biography, it argues that focusing on the now lesser-known members of the British intelligentsia can shine new light on the context of the professionalization of science in Victorian Britain. In its focus on science and religion, this thesis argues that a deeper understanding of Carpenter's Unitarianism must feature at the heart of any endeavour to analyse his work. Previous references to Carpenter either bypassed Unitarianism and its nineteenth-century transformations, or reduced Unitarian thought to certain core tenets that fell short of uncovering Carpenter's philosophical pursuits. Carpenter's Unitarianism is still often equated with the rationalism and mortalism that defined late eighteenth-century Unitarianism, and this failure to recognise how much Carpenter's own faith had departed from earlier strands of Unitarian belief has led to some misinterpretations of his motives. The current thesis therefore offers fresh interpretations of Carpenter's work, based on new archival material and recent historical studies of the shifting priorities shaping the more romantic and emotional spirituality of nineteenth-century Unitarianism. Taking an integrative approach to Carpenter's various projects makes it possible to show how seminal many of his ideas were, and how his Unitarianism, both in its social and spiritual dimensions, influenced his professional, political and intellectual choices. The biographical angle taken in this thesis also makes it possible to uncover a degree of epistemological coherence underpinning Carpenter's thought, and to argue that Carpenter's efforts to transcend conflicting viewpoints partook of his wider social and metaphysical aims.

Abstract:
This thesis project examines both inner and outer circumstances of knowledge in an attempt to emphasize the importance of personal reflection. I search for answers on how to communicate feelings through colour and form by studying Mark Rothko and the abstract expressionism. A personal reflection is made parallelly to expand my own understanding of the subject and my own role in relation to it. I also explore painting as amethod of deepening my understanding of Rothko. Mark Rothko is both subject of study and tutor as I give myself the task of translating his art into my own design. The result offers thoughts and ideas on the significance of the work of hand, the use of colour and the meaning of intention, which I claim are important aspects when aiming for emotional results. However I also reflect upon the fact that the communication remains individual and that it is therefore problematic to confirm success in this matter.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the affect of the emperor-centred visual culture on Sōseki’s use of visual methodologies in his travel writing in London and Manchuria, as well as his novel Sanshirō. In Part I of this thesis, I argue that Sōseki’s anxiety and ambivalence was in part due to the visual culture created around an imperial image infused with symbolic power. Part II of this thesis is almost a reversal of the first, as it discusses Sōseki’s use of deliberately visual methodologies to express his anxiety and ambivalence towards modernity. In light of my discussion of these complex visual techniques, I conclude by briefly addressing the allegations of Sōseki’s complicity in Japanese imperialism and the (non-)politicization of his work. While Sōseki’s anxiety and ambivalence may have been caused by the extremely visual culture centred on the emperor, it also provided him with a means and methodology for expressing his pessimism.

Abstract:
Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) have been introduced in many countries in order to increase the supply of public infrastructure services. The main criterion for implementing a PPP is that it will provide value for money. Often, however, these projects enter into financial distress which requires that they either be rescued or retendered. The cost of such a financial renegotiation can erode the value for money supposed to be created by the PPP. Due to the scale and complexity of these projects, the decision either to rescue or retender the project is not straightforward. We determine whether game theory can aid the decision making process in PPP renegotiation by applying a game theory model retrospectively to the failure of the Metronet - London Underground PPP. We study whether the model can be applied to a real PPP case, whether the application of this model would have changed the outcome of the case and, finally, whether and how the model can be used in future PPP renegotiations. We show that the model can be applied but that its parameters are not easy to quantify, that the model indicates that the outcome of our case was correct and, finally, that as long as the users of the model are prepared that it can be used in to aid decision making in future PPP decision making.

This study uses a grey forecasting model GM(1,1) on technical analysis of securities market using the FTSE 100 Index’s component stocks for example. Four stocks price technical analysis indexes as BIAS, RSI, W%R and KD are used in this study. The daily, weekly and monthly closing stock prices from July 2000 to December 2007 (after the weight is undone) are adopted as the sample data. This study try to apply GM(1,1) into the raw data to obtain a the whitening one. An empirical result and a t-test of average rate of return were used in performance evaluation. The results show that eleven of twelve technical analysis indexes can improve the performance of investment over 50% than classic ones. And especially monthly-BIAS, daily-W%R, weekly- W%R and monthly- KD can improve the performance of investment over 60%. The post-GM(1,1) treatment of technical analysis can’t obtain extra profit than buy and hold strategy. The efficient market hypothesis (EMH) in London stocks market cannot be rejected. But obviously the results find that the performance of investment of post-GM(1,1) treatment were better than those of pre-GM(1,1) treatment. And the investors in Great Britain can use the technical analysis indexes of post-GM(1,1) treatment to obtain higher investment returns.

Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation of the Philanthropic Society (est. 1788) and Refuge for the Destitute (est. 1804), two subscription charities established to prevent crime and reform members of the “criminal underclass” in London, England. This thesis engages the perspectives of both benefactors and beneficiaries, arguing that beneficiaries (or “objects”) were not passive participants in the charitable exchange, but actively sought to manipulate the institutions’ systems to secure their own desires —desires which did not always align with those of their benefactors. The introductory chapter explores the social, economic, and political conditions which led benefactors to create the institutions and which informed their aims and methods. The first chapter examines the strategies used by objects to secure charitable aid on their own terms. The post-institutional conduct of beneficiaries is the focus of the final chapter. Despite the intensive reformatory regimen of the Philanthropic and Refuge, a significant proportion of beneficiaries —at least one third— refused to fulfill benefactors’ expectations that they become law-abiding, industrious, and pious citizens. From the day of their application to the institutions to long after their departure, objects’ actions were informed by their own expectations and desires.

Abstract:
This dissertation of a limited scope focuses on the Heads of Departments’ perceptions of the Integrated Quality Management System for teachers at selected quintile 5 Primary Schools in the East London Region of the Eastern Cape Province. It reveals the positive and negative aspects of the staff appraisal system, its implementation and purpose, as well as views on its improvement. By means of a qualitative case study and the Cognitive Evaluation Theory as theoretical framework, the researcher has determined that the Performance Measurement component of the appraisal system has a detrimental effect on the intrinsic motivation of teachers and that it should be separated from the Developmental Appraisal. Individual interviews with the Heads of Departments revealed the need for revising the assessment rubric in order for Performance Measurement to be conducted effectively.
