У статті досліджується актоіллокутивний потенціал англійського побутового дискурсу виправдання шляхом зіставлення іллокутивних характеристик частотних у дискурсі виправдання мовленнєвих актів. Спираючись на змодельовані конструкти змісту виправдання, дифенсивну інтенцію мовця визначено передумовою породження дискурсу виправдання. У результаті вивчення наявних у науковій літературі класифікацій мовленнєвих актів визначено, що домінантна іллокутивна сила дискурсу виправдання включає складові інформування та переконування, що типово представлено констативом та асертивом. Власне мовленнєвий акт виправдання визначено як кредитив з включеною перлокуцією винесення виправдального вердикту, яким регулюється міжсуб’єктна взаємодія.

We report two cases showing psychiatric symptoms associated with a fear of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). There have now been over 42 cases of AIDS in the United Kingdom (Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre, 1984) since the first case appeared in December 1981, a year after the syndrome was first identified in the United States of America. It was the BBC television programme “Death in the Village” which brought the risks home to many UK homosexual men in mid-1983. Following the programme, the London Gay Switchboard received a high level of telephone calls from men who were afraid that they had AIDS (London Gay Switchboard, 1984).

This is article providing a brief description of the life and scientific achievements of Alan Edward Beck, emeritus Professor of Western University. He was born in England on January 27, 1928 and passed away on December 1st, 2020 at his home in London (Ontario), Canada. He will be remembered not only for his significant contributions in Geophysics but also his active participation in activities of the International Heat Flow Commission- IHFC. In 1958 he was a founding faculty member of the Department of Geophysics of the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada. Shortly thereafter became Acting Head (1961), and then Head (1963) of the Department of Geophysics. He was a founding member of the International Heat Flow Commission, Vice Chairman for the period of 1979 to 1983 and then Chairman during 1983 to 1987. He retired in 1993 but continued to be active with participation in several international organizations. Beck was honored with the J. Tuzo Wilson Award of the Canadian Geophysical Union in 1993.

The Commission on the Coastal Environment, one of the oldest commissions of the lnternational Geographical Union, is issuing a new volume of its quadrennial International Bibliography on Coastal Geomorphology, whose editor is Professor J.F. Araya-Vergara from the University of Chile. This publication represents only one of the many activities of the Commission on the Coastal Environment. For the 1986-1988 period, several research projects have been carried out about the following topics: beach-dune system interactions, shore response to sea level rise, dynamics of coarse clastic beaches, cheniers, human impact on coastal lagoons and coral reefs, recreation uses in coastal areas, coastal hazards, nature of national policies for coastal open space. Publications of the main results of those projects will proceed as soon as enabling funds have been identified. Several meetings have been organized by the Commission during the last few years: Rocheford (France), 1984; Aix - en - Provence (France), 1985; Tallinn (USSR), 1986; Barcelona (Spain), 1986; Portland (USA), 1987 ; London (England), 1987. Guide-books and proceedings are available for most of those symposia. Six issues of the Newsletter edited by Professor Norbert P. Psuty from Rutgers - The State University of New Jersey (USA) have been issued since 1984. More than 450 corresponding members around the world are receiving the liaison bulletin aimed to facilitate exchange of information. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Professor J.F. London: Zed, 1994. vi + 346 pp. (Cloth £39.95, Paper £15.95)Despite the underdeveloped state of the scholarship on its admittedly short sugar plantation slavery period, we now have a corpus of studies on various aspects of capitalism in Trinidad - from its historical advent (Sebastien 1978) to its twentieth-century manifestation in the petroleum sector (Seers 1964; Sandoval 1983), and from the ethnic structure of labor markets (Camejo 1971; Harewood 1971) and the role of capitalism in racial/ethnic inequality (Henry 1993; Coppin & Olsen 1998) to the way ethnicity affects business, big (Button 1981; Parris 1985; Centre for Ethnic Studies 1993) and small (Ryan & Barclay 1992; Griffith 1997), and the way ethnicity and gender are used in class recruitment (Yelvington 1995). There are also a number of fine working-class histories (e.g., Rennie 1973; Ramdin 1982; Basdeo 1983) and important works on the labor riots and strikes and the nature of the colonial state during the crises of the 1930s (e.g., Thomas 1987; Singh 1994). The two books under review here complement the works mentioned above, and they complement each other as well: Reddock's deals with the way capitalism up to the mid-century was buttressed by colonial politics, and explores how this formation engendered certain kinds of political responses, while Miller approaches capitalism through the assumption that fundamental changes in the post-Oil Boom period (ca. 1973-80) brought about considerable autonomy between production and consumption that can and should now be read through an analysis of the cultural circulation of images and commodities in the society. These books are both noteworthy because they engage in explicit theorizing on what capitalism was and is, and what it did and does.

From over 20,000 autopsies performed by the Department of Forensic Medicine of The London Hospital Medical College over a period of 5 years from 1983 to 1987, 7.4 per cent were classified as unnatural deaths, and from these 659 (3.2 per cent) were suicides. The object of this paper is to study the different methods of self-destruction, the incidence of these methods by sex and age, and evidence left by the deceased.

The results of a detailed analysis of marine vessel total losses in relation to selected vessel population characteristics are presented. The casualty and vessel characteristics data used in the analysis are those published by Lloyd's of London in their quarterly casualty returns and in their yearly statistical tables [1,2].2 The data used for the analysis include the six-year period from 1980 through 1985, the data from 1980 through 1983 being the most complete. The casualty and population data were processed into tables which provided frequency data for total losses worldwide and vessel population worldwide by age classes. Similar tables were constructed for selected flags.

One of the most striking features of British general election results is the large variation in turnout across constituencies. In 1983, for instance, the mean turnout was 72.6 per cent of the registered electorate but it ranged from 82.1 per cent in Carmarthen to 51.8 per cent in the City of London and Westminster. Moreover, these variations tend to be reproduced in successive elections – the bivariate correlation between constituency turnout in the 1983 and 1987 elections for all 633 mainland Britain constituencies is +0.94.

Walter Thompson Welford (Walter Weinstein until 1957), born in London, left Hackney Technical Institute at the age of 16 years to become a technician at the London Hospital and later at Oxford University Biochemistry Department. In 1942, after obtaining a first–class honours external degree in mathematics from London University by private study, he returned to London to work at Adam Hilger Ltd. He moved to Imperial College, London, as a research assistant in 1947, became a lecturer in 1951, a senior lecturer in 1959, Reader in 1964 and Professor of Physics in 1973. He was elected a Fellow of The Royal Society in 1980. After formal retirement in 1983 he continued to be research active at Imperial College and the University of Chicago until his death from throat cancer in 1990.Walter's scientific work was in the craft of optical instrumentation, in which he became an internationally recognized master. His contributions ranged from basic aberration theory to the design, construction and testing of a vast range of optical instrumentation. His research fields were principally lens aberrations, optical microscopy, bubble chamber optics, laser speckle, non–imaging optics, diffraction gratings and diffractive lenses. Many will also remember him as a kindly and inspiring educator.

This is the third in a series of interviews with women who are involved in various capacities in feminist theatre today, whose career paths intersect and connect with the feminist movement and the feminist theatre movement, tracing developments and shifts in the feminist theory and practice of the past fifteen years. The first interview, with Gillian Hanna of Monstrous Regiment, set out to provide an update of previously published information, and thereby to keep alive and accurate the current debate about British feminist theatre groups. The second interview, with playwright Charlotte Keatley, put forward a new vision of a ‘map’ to women and (play)writing. This interview carries on the discourse between feminist theatres and their intended audiences by putting forward the responses of one of Britain's strongest young performers, Tilda Swinton, to questions about the challenges and expectations involved in performing gender roles and reversals, or of ‘playing woman’, on film and on stage. Tilda Swinton was born in London in 1960. She studied Social and Political Sciences and English at Cambridge as an undergraduate from 1980 to 1983, under the supervision of Margot Heinemann. It was at Cambridge that Swinton first met and worked with director Stephen Unwin, her closest colleague throughout her career. In 1983, she went to Southampton and worked for six months at the Nuffield Theatre, where she earned her Equity card. In 1984–85, she worked with the RSC, but has chosen not to work on the main stages of the nationally subsidized theatres since. Swinton is primarily known for her work in political theatre, based at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, the Almeida (most notably on The Tourist Guide in 1987 and Mozart and Salieri in 1989), and the Royal Court in London, where she starred in the celebrated Man to Man – a transfer from the Traverse – in 1987, and where she assistant-directed Conquest of the South Pole in 1988. Swinton has also worked at the National Theatre Studio, and has just played Nova at the Cottesloe in a production of Peter Handke's The Long Way Round. She has worked in Italian opera (1988), and has collaborated on and been featured in films by John Berger (Play Me Something, 1988) and Derek Jarman (most notably, Caravaggio, 1986; The Last of England, 1987; and War Requiem, 1988): she continues to collaborate with both. Current and future projects include work on a TV series written by John Byme, which began filming in late September 1989, and work with director Sally Potter on a film adaptation of Virginia Woolf's Orlando, in which Swinton plays Orlando.

Since the late Sandro Stucchi organised the pioneering Urbino conference in 1981 (Stucchi and Luni 1987), the relations of the ancient Eastern Libyans with their northeastern African neighbors, whether Egyptian or Greek, have been the object of much discussion in print (Barker 1989, 31–43; Knapp 1981, 249–279; Leahy 1985, 51–65; O'Connor 1983, 271–278 and 1987, 35–37) as well as the focus of another international conference, this time organised by Anthony Leahy for the Society of Libyan Studies joined with the University of London's School of African Studies Centre of Near and Middle Eastern Studies (Leahy et al. 1990). The 1986 joint SOAS/Society for Libyan Studies conference concentrated on Libyan-Egyptian relations prior to the middle of the 8th century BC, which normally stand outside the immediate purview of classical archaeologists, even though the Urbino conference and the first Cambridge Colloquium organised by Joyce Reynolds in 1984 both included some discussion of the pre-Greek Libyans (Baldassarre 1987,17–24; Beltrami 1985,135–143; Tinè 1987,15–16). While this acceleration of interest would no doubt gratify Oric Bates (dead since 1918), it would also perhaps pique his curiosity even more to read that after so many years the third and second millenia BC Libyans still remain archaeologically largely undocumented (Knapp 1981, 258, 263–264; Leahy 1985, 52; O'Connor 1983, 271 and 1990, 45), especially since he himself had cause to believe that he had excavated their remains in the vicinity of Marsa Matruh (Bates 1915a, 201–207, 1915b, 158-165 and 1927, 137–140; Petrie 1915, 165–166 and 1920, 36).

In July 1983 an agreement was reached between the British government and the London Stock Exchange that was to transform the London securities market in October 1986. The result was a revolution that extended all the way from the design of the market to those permitted access to the governance of those who traded. Given the speed of change, it was termed ‘Big Bang’ by contemporaries. As the scale of the transformation became known, politicians were quick to claim credit for what had been achieved. Subsequently, Big Bang has been regarded as one of the crowning achievements of the Conservative government led by Mrs Thatcher, providing the foundation for the City of London's re-emergence as the leading international financial centre. However, only now is evidence emerging of the intentions of those involved at the time rather than as expressed in the light of hindsight, which casts doubt on what they were seeking to achieve, whether viewed from the perspective of either the politicians or those in charge of the Stock Exchange. Instead, the longer-term pressure for change in the London securities market, the chain reaction caused by abolition of fixed-commission charges, and the proactive role of the Bank of England appear to be of greater significance. What an examination of the process leading up to Big Bang in 1986 reveals is the complexity of political decision involving the financial sector and the danger of unforeseen consequences. One small change can create a tipping point if the result is to remove an essential element within a complex system.

Neben dem nationalen Filmarchiv unterhält das BFI am südlichen Themseufer das bedeutendste Programmkino des Landes und organisiert eine Reihe von Filmfestivals. 1983 erhielt die gemeinnützige Einrichtung eine königliche Satzung verliehen und 2011 wurde sie von der Regierung als führende nationale Fördereinrichtung für den Film anerkannt. Die Bibliothek des BFI war jahrelang in einem Bürogebäude im Stadtteil Soho untergebracht, wo sie abseits des populären Kinokomplexes eher ein Schattendasein führte. Im Frühjahr 2012 bezog sie die ehemalige Galerie des Programmkinos als neues Bibliotheksquartier. Die Bibliothek verfügt über die größte Sammlung an Büchern und Broschüren, Zeitschriften, Fotos, Plakaten und Pressematerialen zum Film- und Fernsehschaffen weltweit.

For 227 episodes of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) treated at St Mary's between 1983 and 1989, factors predictive of fatal outcome were age, haemoglobin levels, peripheral lymphocyte count and alveolar-arterial oxygen gradient. Case fatality for the 47 empirically-treated episodes was significantly higher compared with the 180 cytologically proven episodes (55% vs 18%, χ2 = 25.7, P<0.0001). Case fatality for episodes which could not be bronchoscoped was significantly higher compared with bronchoscopy negative cases (66% vs 25%, χ2 = 4.5, P<0.05). Predictive factors for fatal outcome differed significantly for cases which could not be bronchoscoped and cytologically proven cases: haemoglobin level (10.7 g/dl vs 12.0 g/dl, P<0.001), lymphocyte count (0.64 × 109/l vs 0.87×109/l, P=0.05) and oxygen gradient (77.7 mmHg vs 58.9 mmHg, P<0.02). Such differences were not observed between bronchoscopy negative and cytologically proven cases. Case fatality decreased significantly over time ( b = –0.39, SE=0.14, P<0.05). Total and non-fatal first time episodes displayed an inverse relationship between oxygen gradient and time ( r = −0.22, P<0.006 and r = −0.24, P<0.01, respectively). Mean oxygen gradient of fatal episodes for sequential years increased significantly from 73 mmHg in 1983 to 102 mmHg in 1989 ( r = 0.92, P<0.01). This suggests that medical intervention as well as presentation with less severe disease both contributed to improved case fatality over time.

In 1983, the Greater London Council adopted a policy of ‘Contract Compliance’ designed to ensure that firms selling goods and services to the Council complied with its equal opportunity requirements. The initiative aroused wide interest and many other local authorities - 40 are known of to date — have been considering introducing such a policy. Although simple in essence, its execution can be complex and difficult. In April 1986, the Inner London Education Authority, a partner in the GLC policy, took over the Contract Compliance Unit following the GLCs abolition. Linda Smith explains the background to contract compliance, how the GLC, now ILEA, operates the policy; assesses its achievements and its significance and explores some of the lessons learnt in its three years of operation.

Abstract This article offers the first scholarly account of the International Sakharov Hearings, which were prompted by the so-called Moscow Appeal (1974) and took place in Copenhagen (1975), Rome (1977), Washington, DC (1979), Lisbon (1983), and London (1985). The article provides a detailed examination of each hearing, from the amateurish and politically murky origins in Copenhagen to the more mainstream and quite successful event in London. The article also attempts an overall assessment of the hearings as an original, important case of an international citizens’ tribunal resulting from transnational human rights activism pursued in Andrei Sakharov's name in the context of the Helsinki process. It raises questions about the roles played by various individuals, networks, and agencies, as well as the possible impact of the hearings, both domestically and internationally.

Between October 1983 and December 1985, 268 patients were brought by police to a psychiatric hospital in south London under section 136 of the Mental Health Act 1983. Comparisons were made between ‘blacks' and ‘whites' on several clinical and demographic variables. The vast majority of admissions received a psychiatric diagnosis. An excess of black admissions was recorded. Black men were younger, were more likely than whites to be given neuroleptics, to be put on compulsory orders, and to be given an out-patient appointment when discharged from hospital. More black men were given a case-note diagnosis of schizophrenia or drug-induced psychosis. The differences in clinical management between ethnic groups could be at least partly accounted for by these differences in diagnosis. Treatment did not appear to be independent of diagnosis among the black admissions.

SummaryWe report a marked increase in the rate of notifications of tuberculosis in young adults in the London Borough of Lambeth. Analysis of notifications made to the Proper Officer over a 10-year period showed that the age specific notification rate in the cohort aged 20–44 years increased from 30/100000 in 1983 to 51/100000 in 1992. Analysis of St. Thomas' Hospital laboratory records of patients seen between 1984 and 1991 from whom Mycobacterium tuberculosis was isolated showed an increase in the number of patients of African origin from five in the first half of the study period (1984–7) to 25 in the second half (1988–91): 21 of these 25 had immigrated into England within 4 years of their illness. This finding is being further investigated in a prospective study of ethnicity, travel history and date of immigration of Lambeth residents notified with tuberculosis.
