Abstract:
Charles Skinner Hallpike was born in 1900 in Muree, a small hill station and health resort in the northernmost part of India (now a part of Pakistan). He was baptized at the Church of St. James in Delhi. This was one of the three places of worship—a Hindu temple, a mosque, and a Christian church—built by Hallpike’s great-grandfather, James Skinner. Hallpike began his medical training at Guy’s Hospital in 1919. After graduating from medical school, he was appointed House Surgeon to T. B. Layton in the Ear, Nose and Throat Department at Guy’s Hospital. He took his Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of London and followed with his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons. Hallpike had a reputation of being rather unapproachable, but he was comfortable with his clinical peers and had a protective attitude to the people who worked for him.

Abstract:
Charles Bell was an internationally renowned teacher of anatomy and surgery and an eloquent advocate of natural theology. His writings on the anatomy of expression had a major influence on art and on the training of painters and artists, and they gave birth to physiological psychology. Bell founded his own anatomy school, took over the well-known Hunterian school in Great Windmill Street, was a clinical teacher at one of the great London hospitals, was the most famous professor appointed to the medical department when the University of London was established, helped to found the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, and, finally, held a prestigious chair of surgery at the University of Edinburgh. His association with the University of London was brief, however, because his role was unclear, the institution was mismanaged, and the environment was acrimonious.

Abstract:
Charles Bell (1774–1842) was a Scottish anatomist–surgeon whose original ideas on the nervous system have been equated with those of William Harvey on the circulation. He suggested that the anterior and posterior nerve roots have different functions, and based on their connectivity he showed that different parts of the brain have different functions. He noted that individual peripheral nerves actually contain nerve fibers with different functions, that nerves conduct only in one direction, that sense organs are specialized to receive only one form of sensory stimulus, and that there is a sixth (muscle) sense. In addition to the facial palsy and its associated features named after him, he provided the first clinical descriptions of several neurological disorders and important insights into referred pain and reciprocal inhibition. Bell helped to change the way art students are taught, described the anatomical basis of facial expressions, initiated the scientific study of the physical expression of emotions, and stimulated the later work of Charles Darwin on facial expressions. His teachings influenced British and European art. Bell was a renowned medical teacher who founded his own medical school, subsequently took over the famous Hunterian school, and eventually helped establish the University of London and the Middlesex Hospital Medical School in London. However, his belief in intelligent design caused him to be left behind by the evolutionist thought that developed in the nineteenth century. He was a brilliant but flawed human being who contributed much to the advance of knowledge.
