Abstract:
Objectives. This study aims to conduct an in-depth analysis of the intricate facets of loneliness to acquire a deeper comprehension of this emotional state. It also aims to identify psychological and therapeutic interventions that can significantly improve the overall well-being of elderly individuals. Given that loneliness has a significant detrimental effect on the physical and mental health, as well as the lifespan of seniors, it is a significant public health concern. Material and methods. This paper aims to comprehensively analyze loneliness by examining it from psychosocial and phenomenological perspectives. Through this exploration, we hope to gain a deeper understanding of this complex experience and its impact on individuals. Our findings may reveal new insights into addressing the challenges of loneliness and harnessing its potential for growth and transformation. Results. The experience of loneliness is multifaceted and intricate, lacking a universally accepted language to articulate it. Understanding the roots of loneliness is crucial to effectively preventing and intervening. Because people of different ages tend to experience loneliness in various ways, this study set out to identify the unique characteristics of each age group that put people at risk of or provide protection from experiencing loneliness. Conclusions. Loneliness is a growing concern among professionals, political authorities, and society due to its negative impact on individual and social health, the population’s well-being, and its support networks. The issue of loneliness among older adults is complex and requires further investigation. We can better understand this issue and develop effective global interventions by exploring it. Given the widespread prevalence of loneliness among seniors, additional research is urgently needed to better comprehend how older adults interpret and experience this phenomenon. Keywords: loneliness, isolation, age, ageing, health, senior citizens.

Abstract:
Introduction. Because the fundamental subject of literature is a human being, psychological states play an important part in the understanding and depiction of his feelings. Dream, terror, horror, death, loneliness, lie, trick, and mad are all lyrical notions that come to mind at this time. The study of their poetic expression, as well as the process of transitioning from an unaesthetic to an aesthetic occurrence, is today's critical literary topics. Loneliness is a versatile concept. Its causes, forms, manifestations, mental states and external factors are different. Therefore, it is studied in philosophy as a concept, in psychology as a psychological state, in medicine as a disease, in tasavvuf as a means of reaching God. Research methods. In the following article the poetics of literary works with the title of loneliness is analysed. Comparative-typological and psychological analysis of the image of lonely characters are the main methods used in our research. Results and discussions. The motif of loneliness has become not only a means of organizing the content of the work, but also a means of ensuring compositional integrity. Because the course of events, the mental state of the protagonist is directly related to the feeling of loneliness, and if loneliness is removed from the plot of the story, its composition is seriously damaged. Conclusion. When the word loneliness appears in the title of a work in both literatures, it rises to the level of leitmotif, providing the work's compositional integrity, uniting the events around it, and revealing the major concept. It is directly related to the work's principal theme and concept. The causes of the phenomenon of loneliness have been examined in terms of psychology, philosophy, and literary studies, and the following have been identified as the main reasons: the individual's inability to accept changes in the social system, the inability of the individual to agree with meaningless procedures in society, his moral and religious beliefs sharply different from those around him, problems with personal life, and a tendency to loneliness. Social situations such as poverty, mental illness, old age, unemployment, and crime cause the risk of loneliness.

Abstract:
Following the motif of the loner and the emotional spectrum caused by the so-called loneliness, Igor Kolarov’s prose illuminated in the key of his posthumously published works, most notably in the Sokolica Almanac (Sokolički zbornik), reveals crypto-elements that find prototexts in the Orthodox literature of the Holy Fathers. How close the world of the child is to the foundations of Orthodox dogma is shown by the fact that the poetic practices of minimalism and camouflage allow Kolarov to interpolate them into hypermodern, i.e. ahead- of-time literature, which shows only creation in the space of the universe, participatory (writer-reader) not as a postmodern legacy but as Eucharistic imperative.

Abstract:
Background/Aims Loneliness and social isolation are thought to have a negative impact on health and wellbeing. There is little literature that provides an explicit focus on loneliness and social isolation in occupational therapy practice. The aim of this study was to explore themes related to loneliness and social isolation in occupational therapy-related literature and consider the implications for practice. Methods CINAHL, Medline, Pub Med, AMed, PsycINFO, TRIP Database, and Science direct and Web of science databases were used to identify articles pertaining to occupational therapy, loneliness and social isolation. Results A total of 20 articles were included and three themes were identified: loneliness and social isolation are detrimental to health and wellbeing; factors associated with increased loneliness and social isolation; factors that protect against the impact of loneliness and social isolation. Conclusions Loneliness and social isolation have a significant impact on the health and wellbeing of the people occupational therapists work with. Occupational therapy practice should include the recognition and assessment of loneliness and social isolation, and interventions to help reduce any impacts on health and wellbeing.

Abstract:
Research on loneliness is extensive. This paper presents a systematic review of intervention studies, outlining the antecedents to, and consequences of loneliness in community-dwelling older people. Using PRISMA methodology, a systematic literature review was conducted between January and August 2021 resulting in 49 useable articles. Papers were included if they: (a) investigated older people (+50); (b) were living in community dwellings; (c) had been published in English; (d) had titles or abstracts available and, (e) were published between 2016 and 2021. This study found the antecedents and consequences of social, emotional and existential loneliness differ, however, the vast majority of research has not examined the unique types of loneliness and instead kept loneliness as a generic term, despite the acceptance that various types of loneliness exist. In addition, the findings of intervention studies identified through this review have yielded mixed results. Those interventions focused on improving personal and psycho-social resources for older people fared better outcomes than those focused on technological and social connections alone. This paper reports important implications for the future of research conducted on loneliness and interventions accordingly.

Abstract:
This paper provides the insights for a better understanding of individual, familiar, and social factors of loneliness that influence wellbeing of people in later life. The review offers a thematic analysis on loneliness in elderly people and the therapeutic effects of gardening activities for healthy ageing. Five key themes related to loneliness of elderly people emerged across the papers: loneliness-an issue for wellbeing in life after retirement; the effects of gardening and plants on loneliness; gardening – a therapeutic tool to combat loneliness; elderly’s loneliness during the pandemic and home gardening; and national and international initiatives to decrease loneliness in the elderly population. The review found a significant gap in literature directly connecting loneliness in the elderly with gardening activities for happy and healthy life ageing. The review found that there is a limited number of literatures on the loneliness situation of elderly people during the pandemic, where gardening plays a vital role to reduce the psychological problem while maintaining the social distancing and isolation.

Abstract:
Loneliness is understood as a painful negative emotion. Since its introduction into the psychiatric literature in 1959, the understanding of loneliness has improved considerably, and is now understood to be a distinct entity to such issues as social isolation, solitude, and depression. However, there is still a lack of consensus on the general definition of loneliness. Similarly, different dimensions of loneliness have been described in the literature. It is understood in terms of either transient versus situational versus chronic loneliness; state versus trait loneliness; and the concept of unidimensional versus multidimensional loneliness. The reported prevalence of loneliness varies considerably in the literature, with evidence from metanalysis suggesting the prevalence of moderate loneliness that ranges from 31 to 100% with a mean of 61%, and that of severe loneliness ranging from 9 to 81%, with a mean prevalence of 35% among the elderly. Loneliness among the elderly is associated with significant adverse mental and physical health outcomes in the form of cardiovascular diseases, stroke, diabetes mellitus, arthritis, depression, anxiety, dementia, and even problematic internet use. Over the years, different instruments [University of California Los Angeles Loneliness Scale (UCLA-LS), De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale, Single-Item direct measure of loneliness] have been designed to assess loneliness among the elderly. Some of the interventions suggest that persons experiencing loneliness could benefit from improved social skills, enhanced social support, increased opportunities for social contact, and addressing maladaptive social cognition.

Abstract:
This research contributes to the limited literature concerning the determinants of loneliness at work, as well as to the literature on psychological outcomes associated with temporary work. More specifically, we are adding to the literature by exploring whether there is an association between working temporarily and loneliness at work and whether loneliness at work partly explains the association between working temporarily and job satisfaction. To this end, we analyse—by means of a mediation model—a unique sample of Flemish employees in the private sector. We find that employees with a temporary contract experience more loneliness at work as opposed to employees with a permanent contract. In addition, we discover that loneliness at work mediates the association between working temporarily and job satisfaction.

Abstract:
Few laboratory experiments have been conducted in loneliness research in the past. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to review, partially investigate and discuss loneliness induction procedures in order to facilitate future laboratory experiments in loneliness research (e.g. to examine the link between loneliness and social cognition). Previous studies have found both unconscious (i.e. professional hypnosis) and conscious (i.e. recalling and calling out lonely experiences) procedures to be successful in inducing loneliness. Another conscious procedure (i.e. recalling and writing down lonely experiences) that has been described in recent literature has not yet been examined. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine this procedure using a one-group before-after design. However, this procedure, in which the participants had to recall and write down two lonely situations, was not found to significantly induce loneliness. Of 16 participants, only three reported at least some higher feelings of loneliness following this procedure.

Abstract:
Loneliness is associated with poor mental and social outcomes globally. The literature suggests an association between loneliness and personal characteristics, place of residence, and leisure activities. However, the current literature has produced inconsistent findings and has focused largely on older adults. This study is one of the first to examine the differences, relationships, and predictors of loneliness in an adult population, and the roles of personal characteristics, place of residence, leisure activities, mental health, and social outcomes. A cross-sectional online survey was undertaken. A sample of 155 adults responded, with a mean age of 34.5 years (SD = 13.2), and with 54.1% identifying as female. An analysis revealed experiences of loneliness across the sample. In addition, age was moderately associated with loneliness, while psychological distress, depressive symptoms, and social networks were significantly associated with loneliness. Depressive symptoms were a positive predictor for loneliness, and social networks were a negative predictor for loneliness. This study has confirmed findings from previous research and provided new information on loneliness, which can guide future research and interventions to prevent or support people who suffer from loneliness.

This article analyses and compares the the two writings Kichwamaji by Euphrase Kezilahabi and L´etranger by Albert Camus. Written in the tradition of existentialism, the two writings have many similarities but also differ in some important aspects. While Camus sees the individual just by itself, Kezilahabi also includes the whole family and is writing with it in the tradition of the african communalism

Abstract:
O objetivo principal do meu trabalho pode ser resumido numa pergunta: qual é a relação entre pessoas e espaço? Tudo começou a partir daqui. Este projeto teve como objetivo explorar cada tonalidade da ideia de solidão como sentimento artístico, aplicado ao conceito do espaço e contexto urbano; ABSTRACT: Space and loneliness: the artistic disorientation and exploration in the urban environment In the end the purpose of my work can be summed up with only one question: what relationship do people have with space? Everything starts from there. In my photography practice I like to wander without a specific plan or direction in order to catch the essence of the city, but the truth is that at the end of my explorations, everything becomes a question of space. The relationship that I have with space, that other people have with it, how the city is made by voids and full spaces, how a house evolves around the concept of visual and sensory space. After analysing some different definitions of space, I will be dealing with the feeling behind it, the one that for centuries has been the leitmotiv of artists and poets – in both positives and negatives ways – and now more than ever has been on the focus of media and art because of the recent world situation. The aim of this paper is to try to explore every single shade related to the idea of loneliness seen as an artists’ feeling and applied to the spatial and urban contextualization.

Abstract:

The affective domain of loneliness is an essential creative force in children's lives. Unwanted solitude, although disparaged in our culture, is a theme that takes center stage in stories. This study explores the ways in which Loneliness as an active archetypal presence operates in positive ways in children's imaginations as revealed by children's literature, folklore, film, and myth. The isolated orphan or banished outsider lost within the wilds of narrative makes and enriches her emergent world using the tools of the body, imagination, and voice. Utilizing the modalities of visual art, dramatic play, and lyrical storytelling, inventive companions and elaborate landscapes are constructed which succeed in soothing and expanding the child's psyche.

Employing the archetypal psychology approach, this study imagines (and personifies) Loneliness as the youngest of three sisters: Solitude, Aloneness, and Loneliness. Although these three siblings share similar genetic traits and are woven together in countless tales, Sister Loneliness stands apart as a unique archetypal actor. She is far more restless and angst-ridden than her sisters. Dissatisfied with her companionless state, she holds within her a yearning—the desire/eros—to construct a new cosmology filled with inventive possibilities. This dissertation qualitatively describes these vast and varied universes.

In conjunction with an analysis of well-known (and lesser-known) children's stories, the research examines Loneliness's real-world creations in the classroom and therapeutic settings, including children's drawings, sand play constructions, stories, and poetry. Further areas of focus are the role of the adult in solitary geographies, the gendered-base response to loneliness, and the transitional object as a vital compass on the path towards individuation.

Key Words: loneliness, creativity, children's literature, child development, folklore.

Abstract:
The focus of this study is the representation of homosexuality in the English literature of the first decades of the twentieth century. After an overview of the social and scientific background, the works of E. M. Forster and Radclyffe Hall are considered. The choice falls on Maurice and The Well of Loneliness since they can be classified as the first gay and lesbian modern novel respectively. The analysis will firstly focus on how much of the authors’ own biographies can be recognized in the texts. Secondly, the differences and congruencies between the characters in the novels and the official representation of homosexuality are highlighted. Finally, the authors’ attitudes and ideas about the situation of the homosexual community are compared in an attempt to better understand the climate they experienced and the aim of the novels.

Abstract:
Mermaid Rumspringa is a short story collection that focuses primarily on female protagonists at different stages in their lives. It is an exploration into the effects society has on young people, the way in which mental health issues manifest in young minds, and the way the people who are closest to the individuals dealing with these issues try to adapt and understand them, and in some cases, completely ignore them. This collection utilizes magical elements to try and soften the blow of the serious issues that are being explored both internally and externally within each of the individual stories. These stories present as allegories, as well as classic story tropes with intricate twists and subversions, to make the readers uncomfortable within their comfort zones. As a whole, these stories fit in nicely within the speculative fiction spectrum, and they draw the attention of the average millennial.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter engages with the myriad ways in which silence operates in the fiction—three novels and three collections of short stories—of Kevin Barry. Inevitably, the focus falls mostly on the male protagonists of Barry’s narratives. Suffering variously from a general malaise of Irish maleness whose symptoms include loneliness, isolation, and low self-esteem, Barry’s characters, while often outwardly loquacious, remain emotionally tongue-tied when they most need to speak their hearts. Silence operates in Barry’s stories and novels not simply as a concept but in the same fashion it operates in the real lives of Irish males. Ranging in age from adolescence to midlife, his characters are afflicted by a silence that functions both as a core indicator of that broad-spectrum malaise and as a cause of even deeper suffering.

Abstract:
Introduction Internet has become an essential part of our everyday life and several goals can be achieved through it. While part of the literature on the topic found a positive correlation between loneliness and the use of the internet, other authors found a negative relationship between loneliness and internet use. Objective The aim of our analysis is to investigate the difference in the use of the Internet between immigrants of first- and second-generation in Italy. Data & Methods Using the Survey on Social Condition and Integration of Foreign Citizens conducted by Istat in 2011-2012, we want to estimate, through a Probit estimation model, the impact of socio-economic characteristics on the regularity of using the Internet. The dependent variable is “Internauta” (Dummy: 1 if subject use internet every day; 0 otherwise). Among the explanatory variables, we included the perception of the subjects about their integration in the social framework and their feeling, such as loneliness, or the perception of unacceptance. Results Our results show that the probability of being an “Internauta” increases being male and living in the North or Centre of Italy. Moreover, both of the feelings (feels alone and not accepted) are negatively correlated to the probability of being an Internet user both for First- and Second-Generation immigrants. Second-generation immigrants are more likely to use the internet everyday than the First-generation ones (the difference in predicted probability is equal to 11%). This probability decreases to 0.59, if the second-generation immigrant feels unaccepted in the city where he/she lives, and to 0.71 if he/she fells alone. Conclusion We can conclude that new possibilities offered by “web sociability” or, in general, by the use of the Internet, is negatively correlated to the immigrants’ dissatisfaction that we identify with the perception of integration and sociability in the offline life (Loneliness and Unacceptance).

Abstract:
Childhood in formerly socialist countries is often depicted in research as ‘organised’ or ‘uniform’―a perspective we challenge in this paper. Using collective-memory work, we analyse our own childhood memories from the late GDR and memories taken from the memory archive of the Reconnect/Recollect project, focusing on unsupervised times, when institutional access to child supervision was no longer available and adult supervision could not (yet) be guaranteed. With this focus, we broaden existing literature on post/socialist childhood, which mainly focuses on institutionalized settings. Our analysis finds three patterns of unsupervised times present across different memory stories―unsupervised times perceived as freedom and contentment, responsibility, and loneliness. These patterns show that unsupervised times created opportunities for important children’s experiences to take place―from being creative to imitating adults, breaking rules, and building communities with peers and siblings. Additionally, we find many similarities across geopolitical boundaries that break down the stereotypical dichotomies of childhoods between the ‘East’ and the ‘West’.

Abstract:
The development of the new era has given the new generation new psychological characteristics of loneliness. The purpose of this paper is to explore a new way to relieve loneliness, and to demonstrate that the interaction method and form of hugging with objects is useful for relieving loneliness. The new design and analysis method is used to verify that the ergonomic design of human fit and inductive hugging interaction function are useful for alleviating loneliness, proving that the emotional needs of users can be addressed by attaching hugging function and ergonomic redesign to specific products, providing a new direction for alleviating the psychological situation of contemporary lonely people and creating better products for alleviating loneliness. In this paper, a literature review is conducted in the early stage to outline the current research on the Internet and loneliness. Based on the starting point of hugging and fitting to relieve loneliness, a human-computer pillow with hugging function is designed. University students who meet the characteristics of the target user group are selected as the experimental research objects, and the questionnaire method is used to collect objective intelligence information by distributing online questionnaires to the research target group, and the interview method is used to conduct in-depth research on the target user group so as to deeply understand the users' psychology and identity. After collecting the relevant data, the data were statistically processed using mathematical tools, analyzed using SPSS and other analytical tools, and considered for its credibility, so as to verify the effect of hugs on alleviating loneliness. The experimental method and interview method were used to ask the test subjects about their feelings, so as to prove that the feeling of closeness has an effect on alleviating loneliness. This paper finds that the interaction action of hugging with objects and the ergonomically based sense of fit are useful for alleviating loneliness and can alleviate people's inner loneliness to a certain extent, which helps to focus on the new trend of loneliness psychology among young people based on the contemporary Internet society, design better loneliness relief products for lonely people and pay attention to the deep needs of users. Keywords: ergonomics, psychology, SPSS, loneliness, Internet, z era, interaction

Abstract:
"The idea of Internet use as a way to face psychosocial malaise is growing in the scientific literature about Problematic Internet Use (PIU). The present study, assuming the Semiotic Cultural Psycho-social Theory (SCPT) (Salvatore, 2018) as theoretical framework, postulates and emphasizes that the context in which the subject is embedded provide the symbolic resources, which ground the way adolescents perceive, experience, and therefore deal with the material and social world, including the likelihood of using the Internet as a way to facing life problems and difficulties. SCTP adopts the term “Symbolic Universes” (SU) to denote affect-laden assumptions concerning the world which may (or not) promote adaptive responses. Specifically, the present study aimed to test a mediation model in which each Symbolic Universes (i.e. independent variable) is associated with the psychosocial malaise in terms of social anxiety, loneliness, and negative emotions (i.e. mediator variable), which in turn has effects on PIU (i.e. dependent variable). Measures of PIU (GPIUS), symbolic universes (VOC), negative affect (PANAS), social anxiety (IAS), loneliness (ILs) among a total of 764 Southern Italy youths aged from 13 to 19 (mean age =15.05 ± 1.152). A Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) was firstly run to detect SU; a Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) was then performed on R for testing the hypothesized mediation model. The results demonstrated that Symbolic Universes characterized by anomie and unreliability of the social context are associated with adolescents’ PIU though the mediation of social anxiety, loneliness, and negative emotions. Overall, findings suggest that within an anomic and unreliable scenario, PIU might acquire the meaning of a way to face life in an environment that seems meaningless, uncertain, and detrimental. On the plane of intervention, this points to the need for programs that address social and cultural influences in youths’ Internet use."

Abstract:
Currently, the educational system of Ukraine is experiencing hard times due to full-scale war. A literature review revealed that military actions harm the mental health of civilians and cause fear, stress, loneliness and burnout. Therefore, learning strategies in wartime should contain effective and psychologically comfortable assimilation of new knowledge. The present study aims to evaluate the efficacy of mindset activities in boosting the psychological well-being of engineering students and improving their EFL grammar and vocabulary skills. A two-group pre and post-test design was used. First-year engineering students were included in the study. PHQ-9 depression questionnaire was used to measure the rate of depression before and after treatment. The questionnaire responses in the experimental group before and after treatment showed that the number of students with moderate depression decreased to 15% after treatment and the percentage of students with minimal depression increased by 20%. The changes in mild depression were minor (5%). By contrast, the respondents’ answers to the pre-and post-treatment questionnaire in the control sample did not show significant shifts from severe to minimal rates of depression. To compare students’ scores in EFL pre- and post-grammar and vocabulary tests after applying mindset activities the Fisher’s Exact Test was used. Twenty-five students of the experimental group (83.3%) passed the test (n1 = 30) and twenty students (57.1%) succeeded in passing the test in the control sample (n2 = 35). The application of the test showed that the obtained empirical value φ (2.359) is higher than the critical value φ (1.64) at P < 0.05. Based on the data obtained, it can be concluded that employing mindset activities in EFL classes during wartime can help reduce the rate of depression among engineering students and improve EFL grammar and vocabulary skills.

Abstract:
As a result of the increased amount of information the importance of its independent, critical evaluation is increasing, so that the knowledge learning would not be replaced by the accumulation of information. The responsibility for and the ability to evaluate information independently are relevant as learning outcomes of education for sustainable development. Responsibility and self-reliance as important areas of human life are the focus areas of the existentialist approach; still, this approach is very little used in pedagogy. The results of this research substantiate the topicality of the existentialist approach in modern humanistic pedagogy, in which the emphasis is placed on the personal significance of the learning process. The main aim of the article is to analyse the learning of self-reliance and responsibility from the point of view of existentialism and to evaluate the conditions of its realization in pedagogical practice. The study was done by combining the results of the author’s previous empirical research, observations in pedagogical practice and analysis of the scientific literature. In the minds of Latvian adults, their self-reliance and responsibility are integral components of both the quality of living and the meaning of learning. With age, there is a growing tendency to associate self-reliance not with independent thinking, but with independence and, consequently, existential concerns about the possibility of its realization. An important existential aspect of the learning process is: the distinction between learning to be self-reliant and responsible and learning to find a place in the network and function in pursuit of personal safety and worth. Self-reliance as a relative independence from security, belongingness and recognition and responsibility as an awareness of one's impulses, feelings and attitudes are related to the survival of existential loneliness and overcoming anxiety. Learning self-reliance and responsibility means learning self-reflection, learning to meet oneself, getting to know one's interests and the factors that cause fear, rather than diverting attention to others to information that helps to justify oneself.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused widespread emotional and psychological impacts globally, leading to feelings of isolation, separation, and disconnection among individuals. In response to this, the present study seeks to explore and document the emotional experience of the COVID-19 pandemic through the creation of an art project titled "All those days in isolation". Using mixed media and collage techniques, the study seeks to create a visual representation of the collective experiences and emotions of a community during the pandemic. This project was inspired by the feelings of isolation and separation that many people have experienced and sought to explore and express these emotions through art. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature and qualitative research, including semi-structured interviews with a group of participants who have experienced the pandemic, this thesis will examine how digital art has been used to record and express emotions. The study found that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on mental health and well-being, with high levels of anxiety, stress, and depression reported among individuals who have been directly or indirectly affected by the virus. Additionally, the pandemic has been associated with feelings of loneliness and social isolation, as well as with an increased risk of domestic violence and other forms of abuse. The art project was successful in exploring and expressing the complex emotions of the COVID-19 pandemic, offering a nuanced and well-rounded perspective on the emotional impact of the pandemic on individuals. The study highlights the importance of art in documenting and preserving collective experiences and emotions, as well as its potential to serve as a reflection of society and a tool for coping with stress and traumatic events. Overall, the art project demonstrates the power of art in exploring and expressing complex emotions and providing a space for people to connect with and understand the experiences of others.

Abstract:
The pandemic laid bare: all homes aren’t equitable learning spaces. Yet, education has long considered the family and home an extension of learning. // As a liberatory act, education must consider responsive, resilient practices for equity. // If education considers the family and home as an essential learning space, a continuation of the learning experience, the inequities must be addressed. In fact, Ulrike Hanemann (2015) argues for systemic change in the attitudes of societies to support learning as a life-wide process, disrupting the idea that it is merely a classroom-based endeavor, and expanding it to include literacy learning, in particular, as situated in social practice and understood as a continuum of learning. Hanemann advocates the development of ‘literate families,’ ‘literate communities,’ and ‘literate societies.' // Yet, currently, this assumption is essentially inequitable. Arguably, it is not just literacy learning, but learning in general which must be situated equitably within society-at-large. // For the past decade, Niteo’s work (www.niteo.org) has almost exclusively focused on our global literacy equity, but now we also turn to address Covid-19’s impact on local literacy in Canada. // There are many challenges to SDG4 and literacy in Canada. Pre-pandemic, Canadian Children’s Literacy Foundation’s statistics reported one out of eight students below the age of 15 and a quarter of early readers in Canada were not reading at grade level. For newcomers to Canada, the average literacy gap is equal to 3.5 years of schooling. This is not limited to newly-arrived newcomers, as established immigrants (10+ years in Canada) have a similar gap. Now, compounding this reality for newcomers is the impact of Covid - slowed academic progress, isolation, and loneliness. // We have learned much from our East African partners and can mirror their community literacy work here. // In a 2022 pilot, local newcomer families nominated by educators or NGOs, paired with UBC-O students, undertook an interest-based, intergenerational exploration of literacy learning in the spirit of play. Literacy access and equity were addressed by utilizing the resources of libraries to inspire the joy of reading. Activities together were built around Niteo’s two open education resources, When We Give Children Books and MicroCredential: Leadership in Literacy. The objective was to cultivate joyously literate communities through a focus on family-wide literacy habits to promote lifelong learning. // As a pathway to resilience and the delivery of a life-wide learning experience, this paper focuses on the Niteo pilot project "Story as Community" and its implications.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has in many ways challenged the health and well-being of people, and more widely, the welfare systems in the Nordic countries. Due to regulations and lockdowns, many people have experienced social isolation, and certain vulnerable groups – such as older adults and those with disabilities – have been hit especially hard. As loneliness has implications for people’s long-term mental and physical health, the consequences of the pandemic are significant for health and social care as a whole. This literature review describes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on loneliness and social isolation among younger and older adults living in the Nordic countries, with and without disabilities, and in different situations.
