Full textThe affective domain of loneliness is an essential creative force in children's lives. Unwanted solitude, although disparaged in our culture, is a theme that takes center stage in stories. This study explores the ways in which Loneliness as an active archetypal presence operates in positive ways in children's imaginations as revealed by children's literature, folklore, film, and myth. The isolated orphan or banished outsider lost within the wilds of narrative makes and enriches her emergent world using the tools of the body, imagination, and voice. Utilizing the modalities of visual art, dramatic play, and lyrical storytelling, inventive companions and elaborate landscapes are constructed which succeed in soothing and expanding the child's psyche.
Employing the archetypal psychology approach, this study imagines (and personifies) Loneliness as the youngest of three sisters: Solitude, Aloneness, and Loneliness. Although these three siblings share similar genetic traits and are woven together in countless tales, Sister Loneliness stands apart as a unique archetypal actor. She is far more restless and angst-ridden than her sisters. Dissatisfied with her companionless state, she holds within her a yearning—the desire/eros—to construct a new cosmology filled with inventive possibilities. This dissertation qualitatively describes these vast and varied universes.
In conjunction with an analysis of well-known (and lesser-known) children's stories, the research examines Loneliness's real-world creations in the classroom and therapeutic settings, including children's drawings, sand play constructions, stories, and poetry. Further areas of focus are the role of the adult in solitary geographies, the gendered-base response to loneliness, and the transitional object as a vital compass on the path towards individuation.
Key Words: loneliness, creativity, children's literature, child development, folklore.

Full textBackground: The number of elderly people in Sweden is increasing and their life span increases. Meaningful activities, challenges, balance between abilities and a positive view of life, emerged as prerequisites for achieving health of the elderly. When elders describe happiness, children are often a part of it. Illness in shape of loneliness and social isolation can create suffering for elderly people. Problem: Moving into a nursing home can create illness in shape of anxiety and loneliness. Loneliness is a health risk. In connection with an increased need for care, the social contacts of the elderly may decrease, which may lead to depression. In the long run, depression can generate social isolation that can lead to illness. Aim: To create an overview of how the elderly in nursing homes are affected by meetings with children in IGP. Method: Six qualitative, four quantitative and two mixed-methods-articles has been analyzed in a common literature review. Result: Satisfaction and increased quality of life was promoted by interaction with children. The presence of the children created energy and declined agitations. Social bonding between children and adults increased over time. The use of medications decreased when the elderly got to interact with children. Loudly and lively children was sometimes generating stress. Conclusions: Meetings over generations can maintain health and quality of life. The presence of children contributed with increased energy and less use of medications. Interaction between the participants increased during the intergenerational program.

Full textThis research aims to focus on Korean short stories written by young writers born in the 1980s. Despite being raised under a democracy and easier conditions than their seniors, the so-called “young generation” of writers displays a constant gloominess and uneasiness in their works. Through the examples of five short stories, loneliness and silence are analyzed under an interdisciplinary approach, making use of both literary and translation studies. While producing a fully commented translation, this thesis shows how the fact of being alone can be felt by young people in today’s Korean society, opposing a negative loneliness coming from the isolation from the group one wishes to be part of, and a positive solitude viewed as a oasis of calm in the middle of a roaring daily life often made stressful by the Confucian-hierarchy-inspired norms. We analyze how being alone can be seen both in a positive and negative way, and also as a voluntary or involuntary fact. Furthermore, the characters displayed in the short stories suffer from difficulties of speech and communication. Real and direct communication is hardly made possible, would it be a matter of “wrongly-said” from the first speaker, or “wrongly-understood” from the interlocutor. When this speech uneasiness turns into silence, the involuntary incapacity to speak from fear is added to the voluntary choice to hide from the risks of a distorted oral production. Thus, while expressing the suffering of one’s life, silent expression such as writing and literature appears to be the easiest choice

Full textThe aim of this work is to analyze the issues of identity, gender and sexuality in Radclyffe Halls The Well of Loneliness and in Leslie Feinbergs Stone Butch Blues. The focus of this analysis lies in the main characters of the two novels, Stephen Gordon and Jess Goldberg, who live multiple conflicts since their gender identity and gender expression are not in consonance with their biological sex. The theoretical-methodological fundaments of this thesis are based on the concepts of the theory of the body, on the postmodern conceptualization of identity and the concepts of gender and sexuality, as well as their unfolding. Among the relevant concepts developed for this analysis are the transgenders and transsexuals, once the protagonists display features which are congruent with both categories. Concerning the development of the characters Jess and Stephen, one can notice the multiple and processual nature of the post modern identity, which has a whole range of aspects related to gender and sexuality as (trans)forming elements

Full textThis work proposes an analysis of two novels by the portuguese writer António Lobo Antunes, taking into consideration narrative instances that, from our point of view, are highlighted in the authors work. The books are Ontem não te vi em Babilônia, novel that was published in 2006, and O arquipélago da insônia, published in 2008. The novels make up the authors most recent production cycle, in which the formal and aesthetic experiences are much more intense than in his previous novels. Besides that, these works show thematic convergences that appear in careful reading of the books titles: Ontem não te vi is the representation of time passing, time of frustration; Babilônia is Babel, the biggest symbol of incommunicability for the West. Arquipélago is a group of islands, a gathering that is noticeable for its isolation and incommunicability; Insônia is equally a frustrated wait for something that never arrives, in this case, sleep, which is a metaphor for death in his novels. Therefore, this work is going to focus on the analysis of space, taking into consideration the house as a symbol; time, as death and sleepless; and the text, that is, basically, presented as a discursive overflow. This way, we will enter in Lobo Antunes universe and, what seems to be the authors desire to reveal ourselves and our time

Full textBackground: Loneliness is a complex phenomenon that occurs in different forms and all humans are likely to experience some form of loneliness during their lifetime. Life changing events can affect the appearance of loneliness and nearly 60% of the older people in Sweden have described themselves as lonely. Since loneliness is a personal experience it is important that nurses work person-centred to identify the patient’s individual needs and encourage health. Aim: The aim of this literature review was to summarize older peoples experiences of loneliness. Method: A literature review with qualitative approach has been made and 10 studies from Cinahl and PubMed have been analysed using a content analysis. The quality of the included studies has been reviewed and then compiled in a result. Results: From the content analysis five main categories appeared; different point of views of loneliness, losses in life, the importance of social relations, a feeling of abandonment and existential questions. The experience of loneliness was affected by life changing events such as the death of a spousal, decreasing social network, after retirement and at times when family members prioritized otherwise than the older people. The result shows the difficulties in describing loneliness and tell others about it. Conclusion: The older people experienced that the phenomenon of loneliness impacted on the well-being, both in a positive way but especially in a negative way. Loneliness emerged to be more than just being alone, it can be understood as a multifaced phenomenon with individual experiences. Therefore it´s important that the nurses have knowledge about loneliness to gain a deeper understanding for the patients experiences and needs.

The thesis aims to observe how classic features of The Well of Loneliness, an English lesbian classic fiction in the early 20th century, have been transformed with the change of time in the target culture. To achieve the aim, this study analyzes the translational strategies, or norms, of its two Chinese translations published in Taiwan. The classic features in this study refer to the two literary ambitions the author demonstrates throughout the book. One is the use of the term “invert,” which reflects different medico-scientific ideas from then sexologists, psychopathologists, and psychoanalysts, to challenge the Church’s accusation of immoralty. The other is the abundant use of Biblical allusions and metaphors that also serve to counter inverts’ stigma of sin in then society. Following the deductive research method proposed by Gideon Toury in Descriptive Translational Studies, the study focuses on (1) what translational norms have been applied to representing the two classic features in the two Chinese translations, and (2) how these norms reflect the two translations’ positions in the target culture, more towards classic literature or mass literature. Therefore, chapter two compares the two translators’ Chinese translations of the term “invert,” and observes how their choices match with the author’s writing ambition while also answering to the changing atmosphere in the receiving society. Then, chapter three analyzes the two translators’ representations of the Biblical allusions and metaphors, with Toury’s and Nida’s categorizations of metaphor translation and Bible translation. Chapter four looks at publishers’ arrangements for the two translations on their translator’s notes, introductory prefaces, front covers, back covers, and intertitles, using Toury’s, Gérard Genette’s, and Carmen Toledano-Buendía’s ideas of extratexts, or paratexts. The final chapter concludes some translational norms in construction of the two classic features in the two Chinese translations, and provides some advice and suggestions for future studies on the classic fiction’s future Chinese translations.

The world population is aging, and in this process, we can observe a growing tendency towards the isolation and loneliness of the elderly. Technological interventions have become an alternative when face-to-face interactions are impossible, such as during COVID-19, or in cases when the elderly lives in secluded areas or is unable to reach treatment due to their health conditions. Considering this, the goal of this integrative literature review is to expound on possible technological interventions and strategies that aim to minimize the adverse effects among the elderly of social isolation and loneliness. The present literature review has systematically searched for articles which focus on Internet-based Interventions and how they affect the loneliness and social isolation of the elderly. To achieve this, papers published in English between 2000 and 2020 were collected from databases such as PUBMED, B-on, and Web of Science. In total, the search in the databases allowed electronic access to 270 articles and the manual search to 2 articles. After following several criteria necessary for the inclusion or exclusion of the papers in this review, 13 papers were selected for final analysis. This literature review assessed the sociodemographic characteristics, objectives, methodology, and main results directly related to the variables under investigation. A thematic analysis found that social interaction activities based on the Internet, training of digital skills, online games, online workout groups, befriending groups, video conferences, social robots, and Low Intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (LI-CBT) via WhatsApp were the interventions of choice of the selected papers. The results are encouraging in that most studies reviewed reported on evidence that attest to the effectiveness of such treatments among the elderly. Still, barriers remain that need to be overcome and research gaps that need addressing (e.g. digital illiteracy). When these are done, access to new digital tools will be facilitated to this population.
Krainitzki, Eva. "There are so many of us: a diversidade na representação da identidade lésbica em The well of loneliness de Radclyffe Hall." Master's thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/7929.
Abstract: Radclyffe Hall’s 1928 novel The Well of Loneliness is considered the one lesbian novel whose title, at least, is familiar to everyone. Since identity and representation influence each other reciprocally as far as cultural practices are concerned, one should ask what kind of lesbian identity is being depicted in this particular novel. Indebted to sexology’s definition of deviant sexuality and an all-pervading idealization of heterosexuality, does this novel allow for a ‘reverse’ discourse as defined by Foucault? Stephen Gordon, the protagonist, is represented in terms of the nineteenth-century sexologist’s female congenital invert notion. Allegedly liberating, since it conceptualised homosexuality as disease instead of sin or crime, the theory of sexual inversion might be seen as extremely damaging in case of female homosexuality. As opposed to male homosexuality, lesbianism never constituted a criminal act, which means that casting it in terms of congenital disease did not comprise any kind of progress. Written as a plea for society’s recognition of the invert’s right to existence, The Well of Loneliness does not reject heterosexuality, although desire is depicted as fluid. In opposition to Stephen, who emerges as the invert’s prototype, Mary Llewellyn signifies a lesbian identity liberated from sexological classifications. This study proposes to analyse the theory of sexual inversion and the construction of heterosexuality as a norm in this novel. Furthermore, the representation of secondary characters, such as Mary and Valérie, will be explored as alternatives to the sexological model represented by Stephen Gordon.

While exceeding simple description of cities, individual geographies indeed will emerge, true forms of art which end up weaving quite singular interior landscapes. The cities we read on the pages of Le Spleen de Paris, Le Carillonneur and Livro do Desassossego assume themselves as artistic creations becoming literary cities: the making of a unique urban aesthetics. It was intended in this work, through the comparative study of these three poetic works, to detect specificities, similarities and differences in the city thematic.

Full textThis research aims to bring to present days the memory of a time forgotten writer, Luzia. We present the life and work of this author, as well as the reception it had in society at the time. We present a recollection of her experiences, travels, wanderings and the pursuit of "self" that the author transpires throughout her work. The author’s work is analyzed, seeking the most significant images, which proves the existence of a magical kingdom in which Luzia sometimes inhabits. It’s also provided a compilation of press clippings, years after Luzia died, converging the opinion of both laymen and scholars, of the writer and her work, while trying to understand the reasons that led her to oblivion. It’s also highlighted the traits that distinguished Luzia as a woman and writer in her days.
