Abstract:
This article analyses and compares the the two writings Kichwamaji by Euphrase Kezilahabi and L´etranger by Albert Camus. Written in the tradition of existentialism, the two writings have many similarities but also differ in some important aspects. While Camus sees the individual just by itself, Kezilahabi also includes the whole family and is writing with it in the tradition of the african communalism

Abstract:
Tudo começou a partir daqui. Este projeto teve como objetivo explorar cada tonalidade da ideia de solidão como sentimento artístico, aplicado ao conceito do espaço e contexto urbano; ABSTRACT: Space and loneliness: the artistic disorientation and exploration in the urban environment In the end the purpose of my work can be summed up with only one question: what relationship do people have with space? Everything starts from there. In my photography practice I like to wander without a specific plan or direction in order to catch the essence of the city, but the truth is that at the end of my explorations, everything becomes a question of space. The relationship that I have with space, that other people have with it, how the city is made by voids and full spaces, how a house evolves around the concept of visual and sensory space. After analysing some different definitions of space, I will be dealing with the feeling behind it, the one that for centuries has been the leitmotiv of artists and poets – in both positives and negatives ways – and now more than ever has been on the focus of media and art because of the recent world situation. The aim of this paper is to try to explore every single shade related to the idea of loneliness seen as an artists’ feeling and applied to the spatial and urban contextualization.

Abstract:

The affective domain of loneliness is an essential creative force in children's lives. Unwanted solitude, although disparaged in our culture, is a theme that takes center stage in stories. This study explores the ways in which Loneliness as an active archetypal presence operates in positive ways in children's imaginations as revealed by children's literature, folklore, film, and myth. The isolated orphan or banished outsider lost within the wilds of narrative makes and enriches her emergent world using the tools of the body, imagination, and voice. Utilizing the modalities of visual art, dramatic play, and lyrical storytelling, inventive companions and elaborate landscapes are constructed which succeed in soothing and expanding the child's psyche.

Employing the archetypal psychology approach, this study imagines (and personifies) Loneliness as the youngest of three sisters: Solitude, Aloneness, and Loneliness. Although these three siblings share similar genetic traits and are woven together in countless tales, Sister Loneliness stands apart as a unique archetypal actor. She is far more restless and angst-ridden than her sisters. Dissatisfied with her companionless state, she holds within her a yearning—the desire/eros—to construct a new cosmology filled with inventive possibilities. This dissertation qualitatively describes these vast and varied universes.

In conjunction with an analysis of well-known (and lesser-known) children's stories, the research examines Loneliness's real-world creations in the classroom and therapeutic settings, including children's drawings, sand play constructions, stories, and poetry. Further areas of focus are the role of the adult in solitary geographies, the gendered-base response to loneliness, and the transitional object as a vital compass on the path towards individuation.

Key Words: loneliness, creativity, children's literature, child development, folklore.

Abstract:
The focus of this study is the representation of homosexuality in the English literature of the first decades of the twentieth century. After an overview of the social and scientific background, the works of E. M. Forster and Radclyffe Hall are considered. The choice falls on Maurice and The Well of Loneliness since they can be classified as the first gay and lesbian modern novel respectively. The analysis will firstly focus on how much of the authors’ own biographies can be recognized in the texts. Secondly, the differences and congruencies between the characters in the novels and the official representation of homosexuality are highlighted. Finally, the authors’ attitudes and ideas about the situation of the homosexual community are compared in an attempt to better understand the climate they experienced and the aim of the novels.

Abstract:
Mermaid Rumspringa is a short story collection that focuses primarily on female protagonists at different stages in their lives. It is an exploration into the effects society has on young people, the way in which mental health issues manifest in young minds, and the way the people who are closest to the individuals dealing with these issues try to adapt and understand them, and in some cases, completely ignore them. This collection utilizes magical elements to try and soften the blow of the serious issues that are being explored both internally and externally within each of the individual stories. These stories present as allegories, as well as classic story tropes with intricate twists and subversions, to make the readers uncomfortable within their comfort zones. As a whole, these stories fit in nicely within the speculative fiction spectrum, and they draw the attention of the average millennial.

Abstract:
This thesis is an examination of sex in D. H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover and Radclyffe Hall's The Well of Loneliness as it relates to the social, linguistic and political elements of literary modernism. Both novels "think sex," allowing specific concepts of sex to act as methods of communication between artists and readers. By writing sex, Hall and Lawrence address the modern reader, providing a script for ideal readerly and writerly approaches to the novel. The first chapter examines contemporary cultural and gender theory's understanding of the relationship between sex and discourse and relates this to political and literary considerations of modernism. The second chapter looks at psychosexual medical texts that influenced modernism's understanding of sex and art; the final chapter examines "thinking sex" in Lady Chatterley's Lover and The Well of Loneliness by examining the content and reception of both works.

Full text
Abstract:
The loneliness theme of Carson McCullers' fiction falls into three divisions or levels. And because of her focus on the individual, her general theme of loneliness as it results from human isolation is universal. She develops her "broad principal theme" through an examination of human characteristics common to all human beings. In expressing her concept of isolation as a human condition, however, she presents loneliness as she believes it exists in her own culture, and, for this reason, her works present a loneliness that results from American cultural attitudes and is tempered by a Southern sense of nostalgia. After first establishing an understanding of McCullers' basic theme through an analysis of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, this study analyzes the nature of the Southern tradition and its influence on the criticism of her fiction with particular focus on the problems of determining to what degree her Southern settings inhibit the interpretation of her works beyond a regional perspective. A comparison of thematic elements, events, and characterization in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter to nonfiction critical discussions of American culture in The Image by Daniel Boorstin and The Pursuit of Loneliness by Philip Slater shows that the social context and the theme of isolation in the novel reflect a condition of life that is American, not distinctively Southern. The final portion of this study continues the analysis of McCullers' basic theme in Reflections in a Golden Eye, The Member of the Wedding, The Ballad of the Sad Cafe, and Clock Without Hands, comparing elements of these later works to The Image and The Pursuit of Loneliness in order to demonstrate the particularly American loneliness of her characters and the value of her works to the tradition of American novel.

Abstract:
Background: The number of elderly people in Sweden is increasing and their life span increases. Meaningful activities, challenges, balance between abilities and a positive view of life, emerged as prerequisites for achieving health of the elderly. When elders describe happiness, children are often a part of it. Illness in shape of loneliness and social isolation can create suffering for elderly people. Problem: Moving into a nursing home can create illness in shape of anxiety and loneliness. Loneliness is a health risk. In connection with an increased need for care, the social contacts of the elderly may decrease, which may lead to depression. In the long run, depression can generate social isolation that can lead to illness. Aim: To create an overview of how the elderly in nursing homes are affected by meetings with children in IGP. Method: Six qualitative, four quantitative and two mixed-methods-articles has been analyzed in a common literature review. Result: Satisfaction and increased quality of life was promoted by interaction with children. The presence of the children created energy and declined agitations. Social bonding between children and adults increased over time. The use of medications decreased when the elderly got to interact with children. Loudly and lively children was sometimes generating stress. Conclusions: Meetings over generations can maintain health and quality of life. The presence of children contributed with increased energy and less use of medications. Interaction between the participants increased during the intergenerational program.

Abstract:
In this study of Lev Shestov, the biographical method is used to explain his philosophy. The grave crisis or nervous breakdown Shestov went through caused a total transformation of his - convictions and values. It was probably this drama that led to his repudiation of the common life and traditional philosophy with its emphasis on reason, knowledge, and ethics in favour of an extreme individualism and religious transcendence. The aim of the dissertation is to examine, amongst the great number of philosophers and writers Shestov analysed, mainly those in his view “marginal thinkers”, who were of the greatest interest to him – Fyodor Dostoevsky, Lev Tolstoy, Friedrich Nietzsche, Martin Luther, and Søren Kierkegaard. On the basis of this analysis the character of Shestov’s philosophy is defined. According to Shestov, like his own crisis, the crises that these thinkers experienced occasioned a total transformation of their convictions and values. Šestov does not let his life find complete expression in his philosophy. Instead he projects his crisis into the five thinkers’ crises and philosophy. To characterize the previous and new modes of thinking, the concepts of alienation (degeneration, degradation, depravity) and authenticity (deliverance from alienation) are used. Shestov’s judgment of the consistency of the five thinkers’ new attitudes is presented, i.e. deliverance from the common life with its emphasis on rational eternal truths and moralism. Authentic life is in Shestov’s opinion the from the individual’s everyday life concealed experience of despair in extreme situations. This constitutes a grave crisis that leads to the repudiation of all hitherto held convictions and cherished hopes. The contrast between the Russian philosopher’s personal, (after his crisis) mainly tranquil, harmonious life and his philosophy is glaring. Analyzing the five thinkers, Shestov finds that they did not persevere with their new convictions, instead they complied with the by everybody accepted and everywhere valid truths. Shestov’s “theoretical”, uncompromising and consistent stance on one side and the lack of these characteristics with the aforementioned thinkers on the other side, to a great extent places Shestov in another category than these. In Shestov’s view freedom is in the region of tragedy, which nobody enters on his own will and in the incomprehensible trust in a capricious, “inhuman” God. According to Shestov, only the philosopher, who derives his thinking from a situation, where he experiences extreme despair and hopelessness, can claim to be a true philosopher.

Abstract:
In this essay I perform readings of five influential literary works of the Modern Breakthrough in Nordic literature: Et dukkehjem (1879) by Henrik Ibsen, Niels Lyhne (1880) by Jens Peter Jacobsen, Barndomsvänner (1886) by Karl August Tavaststjerna, Fru Marianne (1887) by Victoria Benedictsson, and Ensam (1903) by August Strindberg. My aim is to identify and analyze discourses of loneliness and community. A central theme, both in this literature and in the contemporary society, is the problematization of gender roles. I find that the literature questions the polarization of gender roles through its depiction of marital relationships. At the same time, alternative communities are often portrayed as more fallible than those of marriage and nuclear family, forming discourses where marriage and nuclear family are prioritized over alternative communities – with a possible exception of national community. This paradoxical existence of modernity highlights the complexity of societal development: societal change requires not only political reforms but also change within subjects. The paradoxicality can be viewed as a manifestation of inner struggles. Finally, I reflect upon the endeavor to obtain entity that I find in these literary works. As connections between nature, culture and kinship, as well as between the past, the present and the future are formulated, issues of power/powerlessness and responsibility are brought into question. I propose further studies on these themes in relation to the emergence of nationalism, racial biology and fascism in 19th and 20th centuries, in order to deepen the understanding of the structure and the conditions of nationalism, racial biology and fascism in this context.

Abstract:
This research aims to focus on Korean short stories written by young writers born in the 1980s. Despite being raised under a democracy and easier conditions than their seniors, the so-called “young generation” of writers displays a constant gloominess and uneasiness in their works. Through the examples of five short stories, loneliness and silence are analyzed under an interdisciplinary approach, making use of both literary and translation studies. While producing a fully commented translation, this thesis shows how the fact of being alone can be felt by young people in today’s Korean society, opposing a negative loneliness coming from the isolation from the group one wishes to be part of, and a positive solitude viewed as a oasis of calm in the middle of a roaring daily life often made stressful by the Confucian-hierarchy-inspired norms. We analyze how being alone can be seen both in a positive and negative way, and also as a voluntary or involuntary fact. Furthermore, the characters displayed in the short stories suffer from difficulties of speech and communication. Real and direct communication is hardly made possible, would it be a matter of “wrongly-said” from the first speaker, or “wrongly-understood” from the interlocutor. When this speech uneasiness turns into silence, the involuntary incapacity to speak from fear is added to the voluntary choice to hide from the risks of a distorted oral production. Thus, while expressing the suffering of one’s life, silent expression such as writing and literature appears to be the easiest choice

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to analyze the issues of identity, gender and sexuality in Radclyffe Halls The Well of Loneliness and in Leslie Feinbergs Stone Butch Blues. The focus of this analysis lies in the main characters of the two novels, Stephen Gordon and Jess Goldberg, who live multiple conflicts since their gender identity and gender expression are not in consonance with their biological sex. The theoretical-methodological fundaments of this thesis are based on the concepts of the theory of the body, on the postmodern conceptualization of identity and the concepts of gender and sexuality, as well as their unfolding. Among the relevant concepts developed for this analysis are the transgenders and transsexuals, once the protagonists display features which are congruent with both categories. Concerning the development of the characters Jess and Stephen, one can notice the multiple and processual nature of the post modern identity, which has a whole range of aspects related to gender and sexuality as (trans)forming elements

Abstract:
This work proposes an analysis of two novels by the portuguese writer António Lobo Antunes, taking into consideration narrative instances that, from our point of view, are highlighted in the authors work. The books are Ontem não te vi em Babilônia, novel that was published in 2006, and O arquipélago da insônia, published in 2008. The novels make up the authors most recent production cycle, in which the formal and aesthetic experiences are much more intense than in his previous novels. Besides that, these works show thematic convergences that appear in careful reading of the books titles: Ontem não te vi is the representation of time passing, time of frustration; Babilônia is Babel, the biggest symbol of incommunicability for the West. Arquipélago is a group of islands, a gathering that is noticeable for its isolation and incommunicability; Insônia is equally a frustrated wait for something that never arrives, in this case, sleep, which is a metaphor for death in his novels. Therefore, this work is going to focus on the analysis of space, taking into consideration the house as a symbol; time, as death and sleepless; and the text, that is, basically, presented as a discursive overflow. This way, we will enter in Lobo Antunes universe and, what seems to be the authors desire to reveal ourselves and our time

Abstract:
The dissertation discusses the work O amanuense Belmiro of Cyro dos Anjos, based on the critical reception, going through some readings and studies undertaken on the mining author and his literary production, to settle in the analysis of the novel's narrative. At this point, it looks like the character Belmiro Borba faces the evils of affection. In other words, how it reacts to evil that print you love, nostalgia, fear and loneliness. Each of these affects the mark with a different pattern of pain. However, our brave hero always reacts the same way; writing their pain on a daily intimate and solitary as a way of redemption. This analytical perspective about the emotions that affect the amanuensis takes us at the end of the dissertation, to reflect on ourselves and our relationship to life.

Abstract:
My aim is to recreate from the texts and films the world which is shown, and then examine it in order to demonstrate a number of points. I hope to show that there is such a phenomenon as an English working class, and that this class has its own culture. This culture is different from, and in many ways opposed to, the “high” artistic culture of the elite, but is not a culture of lack, as in “lack of culture”. It is rather a creation of the working class themselves and serves as a positive force in their lives, which are again different from and frequently opposed to the lives of the upper and middle classes. It is also resistant to the mass culture and the ideology which this conveys, or is argued to convey, and these resistant attitudes form part of the working-class culture. Work plays an important part in the lives of Sillitoe´s characters, and this activity has been consistently neglected in English literature, at least as regards the working class. Despite views which represent the post-war working class in England as less cohesive and more individualistic, I argue that the way that Sillitoe´s characters live and think about their lives reflects the previous history of the working class, and the attitudes revealed had been developed over more than a century. Rather than being an isolated picture of two disconnected individuals, the works represent a point in a continuum of literature about the working class, a continuum which has been extended not least by Sillitoe himself. I include the films in this thesis for a number of reasons. The films are closely linked to the books not only through contemporaneity and the fact that Sillitoe wrote the screenplay for both, but also through the Free Cinema movement. This, I argue, can be seen as the cinematic counterpart to the Angry Young men in literature, and these two movements were and are closely interwoven in the cultural event of the late 50s/early 60s in England, and thus are considered from the same point of view as the books. The structure of this work is as follows: in the first part I give a brief outline of the Industrial Revolution in England, and the changes which it produced in society, especially in the political, educational and cultural fields. The key words in the title of this thesis, “work”, “culture”, “class”, are all complex, open to multiple interpretations, and all have their roots in the Industrial Revolution. This leads me to the development of the idea of culture and the development of cultural studies as a discrete field of enquiry. I examine the literature produced by and about the working class, with particular reference to the work itself. In the second part I look at the cultural production in wartime and post-war England, which includes the work of those writers usually grouped together as the Angry Young Men, to give the social and cultural background against which Sillitoe wrote the works to be studied. This takes me on to the books themselves, with particular attention paid to the role of work and culture, in its various meanings, which will include the ideology to which the characters are subjected. In the third part I examine the two films, both as a development of the Free Cinema movement and in the same terms as used for the books, namely in terms of the portrayal of the two main characters in their respective roles in society and their reactions to the ideology of that society, and also in terms of their portrayal of culture. Finally, some conclusions are drawn, in which the main point is that Sillitoe showed in these two works that the working class have their own culture and ideology, and that these are different from and opposed to the culture and ideology which are dominant in the society in which they live.

Abstract:
Background: Loneliness is a complex phenomenon that occurs in different forms and all humans are likely to experience some form of loneliness during their lifetime. Life changing events can affect the appearance of loneliness and nearly 60% of the older people in Sweden have described themselves as lonely. Since loneliness is a personal experience it is important that nurses work person-centred to identify the patient’s individual needs and encourage health. Aim: The aim of this literature review was to summarize older peoples experiences of loneliness. Method: A literature review with qualitative approach has been made and 10 studies from Cinahl and PubMed have been analysed using a content analysis. The quality of the included studies has been reviewed and then compiled in a result. Results: From the content analysis five main categories appeared; different point of views of loneliness, losses in life, the importance of social relations, a feeling of abandonment and existential questions. The experience of loneliness was affected by life changing events such as the death of a spousal, decreasing social network, after retirement and at times when family members prioritized otherwise than the older people. The result shows the difficulties in describing loneliness and tell others about it. Conclusion: The older people experienced that the phenomenon of loneliness impacted on the well-being, both in a positive way but especially in a negative way. Loneliness emerged to be more than just being alone, it can be understood as a multifaced phenomenon with individual experiences. Therefore it´s important that the nurses have knowledge about loneliness to gain a deeper understanding for the patients experiences and needs.

Abstract:
This dissertation attempts to show that the phenomenon of loneliness is written into Michael Ondaatje’s The English Patient. The Introduction offers a description of the origins of loneliness as a field of study, presents key instances of loneliness in literature, and investigates the nature of loneliness. In the first chapter, the Villa is introduced as a figural and conceptual framework for analysis. The second chapter focuses on the patient’s room and the library, leading to a discussion of personal and existential loneliness, identity and naming. The third chapter investigates social loneliness with reference to the kitchen, garden and hallway, addressing notions of race and othering, home and family. The fourth chapter discusses the body and embodiment, as well as emotion and metaphor. The dissertation argues that the stylistic, thematic and structural features of The English Patient suggest and reflect the complexities and characteristics of loneliness.

The thesis aims to observe how classic features of The Well of Loneliness, an English lesbian classic fiction in the early 20th century, have been transformed with the change of time in the target culture. To achieve the aim, this study analyzes the translational strategies, or norms, of its two Chinese translations published in Taiwan. The classic features in this study refer to the two literary ambitions the author demonstrates throughout the book. One is the use of the term “invert,” which reflects different medico-scientific ideas from then sexologists, psychopathologists, and psychoanalysts, to challenge the Church’s accusation of immoralty. The other is the abundant use of Biblical allusions and metaphors that also serve to counter inverts’ stigma of sin in then society. Following the deductive research method proposed by Gideon Toury in Descriptive Translational Studies, the study focuses on (1) what translational norms have been applied to representing the two classic features in the two Chinese translations, and (2) how these norms reflect the two translations’ positions in the target culture, more towards classic literature or mass literature. Therefore, chapter two compares the two translators’ Chinese translations of the term “invert,” and observes how their choices match with the author’s writing ambition while also answering to the changing atmosphere in the receiving society. Then, chapter three analyzes the two translators’ representations of the Biblical allusions and metaphors, with Toury’s and Nida’s categorizations of metaphor translation and Bible translation. Chapter four looks at publishers’ arrangements for the two translations on their translator’s notes, introductory prefaces, front covers, back covers, and intertitles, using Toury’s, Gérard Genette’s, and Carmen Toledano-Buendía’s ideas of extratexts, or paratexts. The final chapter concludes some translational norms in construction of the two classic features in the two Chinese translations, and provides some advice and suggestions for future studies on the classic fiction’s future Chinese translations.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the analysis of two novels by Juan José Millás (El desorden de tu nombre and La soledad era esto), in which it concentrates on the characters in difficult life situations and their feeling of loneliness. The first part of work examines Spanish postmodern literature after 1975 and its characteristics which can be found in the work of Millás. The second and principal part is dedicated both to the typology of characters and also to the topic of loneliness, its cause and outcome. The aim of this work is an attempt to define main events which have influence on the evolution and current condition of the characters that these have in common or, on the contrary, different. There will be also taken into consideration whether the protagonist is a man or a woman. The work will be also focused on protagonists' characters, their inner world, existential questions which the persons ask themselves and their search of lost identity.

Abstract:
The world population is aging, and in this process, we can observe a growing tendency towards the isolation and loneliness of the elderly. Technological interventions have become an alternative when face-to-face interactions are impossible, such as during COVID-19, or in cases when the elderly lives in secluded areas or is unable to reach treatment due to their health conditions. Considering this, the goal of this integrative literature review is to expound on possible technological interventions and strategies that aim to minimize the adverse effects among the elderly of social isolation and loneliness. The present literature review has systematically searched for articles which focus on Internet-based Interventions and how they affect the loneliness and social isolation of the elderly. To achieve this, papers published in English between 2000 and 2020 were collected from databases such as PUBMED, B-on, and Web of Science. In total, the search in the databases allowed electronic access to 270 articles and the manual search to 2 articles. After following several criteria necessary for the inclusion or exclusion of the papers in this review, 13 papers were selected for final analysis. This literature review assessed the sociodemographic characteristics, objectives, methodology, and main results directly related to the variables under investigation. A thematic analysis found that social interaction activities based on the Internet, training of digital skills, online games, online workout groups, befriending groups, video conferences, social robots, and Low Intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (LI-CBT) via WhatsApp were the interventions of choice of the selected papers. The results are encouraging in that most studies reviewed reported on evidence that attest to the effectiveness of such treatments among the elderly. Still, barriers remain that need to be overcome and research gaps that need addressing (e.g. digital illiteracy). When these are done, access to new digital tools will be facilitated to this population.

Abstract:
Abstract: Radclyffe Hall’s 1928 novel The Well of Loneliness is considered the one lesbian novel whose title, at least, is familiar to everyone. Since identity and representation influence each other reciprocally as far as cultural practices are concerned, one should ask what kind of lesbian identity is being depicted in this particular novel. Indebted to sexology’s definition of deviant sexuality and an all-pervading idealization of heterosexuality, does this novel allow for a ‘reverse’ discourse as defined by Foucault? Stephen Gordon, the protagonist, is represented in terms of the nineteenth-century sexologist’s female congenital invert notion. Allegedly liberating, since it conceptualised homosexuality as disease instead of sin or crime, the theory of sexual inversion might be seen as extremely damaging in case of female homosexuality. As opposed to male homosexuality, lesbianism never constituted a criminal act, which means that casting it in terms of congenital disease did not comprise any kind of progress. Written as a plea for society’s recognition of the invert’s right to existence, The Well of Loneliness does not reject heterosexuality, although desire is depicted as fluid. In opposition to Stephen, who emerges as the invert’s prototype, Mary Llewellyn signifies a lesbian identity liberated from sexological classifications. This study proposes to analyse the theory of sexual inversion and the construction of heterosexuality as a norm in this novel. Furthermore, the representation of secondary characters, such as Mary and Valérie, will be explored as alternatives to the sexological model represented by Stephen Gordon.

This research aims to bring to present days the memory of a time forgotten writer, Luzia. We present the life and work of this author, as well as the reception it had in society at the time. We present a recollection of her experiences, travels, wanderings and the pursuit of "self" that the author transpires throughout her work. The author’s work is analyzed, seeking the most significant images, which proves the existence of a magical kingdom in which Luzia sometimes inhabits. It’s also provided a compilation of press clippings, years after Luzia died, converging the opinion of both laymen and scholars, of the writer and her work, while trying to understand the reasons that led her to oblivion. It’s also highlighted the traits that distinguished Luzia as a woman and writer in her days.
