Abstract:
In the framework of the early prevention of problems in the owner–dog relationship, it is important to have a broad perspective on the development of this relationship over time, starting before people actually acquire a dog. People who currently (or previously) own(ed) a dog can rely on their experiences when considering a new dog, while this knowledge is unavailable to first time dog-owners. In this study, we explore how self-efficacy, social comparison, perceptions about the (dis)advantages of ownership and commitment to the dog (so-called social cognitive factors), problematic canine behaviors, perceived costs, and satisfaction with the dog change over time. We examine changes from the motivational phase of relationship development (before acquisition of the dog) into the experience phase (six and twelve months after acquisition of the dog). We explore if patterns are different in experienced (previous (n = 73) and current (n = 80)) versus unexperienced (first time (n = 30) dog owners. The respondents filled in three online questionnaires—once before and twice after acquisition of their dog. From T0 (before acquisition of the dog) to T1 (having the dog for six months) participants (especially those with no ownership experience) had to adjust their perceptions about dogs and dog ownership. Experiencing the relationship for an additional year (from T1 to T2) barely changed the social cognitive factors, satisfaction, and perceived costs. A small decline in problematic canine behaviors was present among the experienced dog owners between T1 and T2. To conclude, perceptions about dogs and dog ownership change over time, but after testing these perceptions with reality, they become stable after about six months.

Abstract:
In the last few years, it has become easier to diagnose congenital brain malformations in dog’s ante-mortem. This is probably due to the wider availability of advanced diagnostic imaging, in particular computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Despite this, there is still not much literature available about potential treatments, outcome and overall prognosis with respect to the patient’s quality of life. We present three cases of Dandy-Walker malformation in Polish hunting dogs with up to five years follow up including assessment of their quality of life. A nine-week-old Polish hunting dog was presented with progressive signs of ataxia that had developed over the preceding few weeks. MRI revealed a Dandy-Walker malformation. The dog underwent MRI at the ages of 12 and 36 months, and his neurological condition was followed for five years. No other subsequent abnormities were found on further diagnostic tests. The dog showed transient behavioural problems which improved after castration and training. The ataxia seen at first visit improved with time and intensive physiotherapy, and the dog was considered to have a good quality of life in the owner’s eyes. A further two cases shared a similar disease course. Dandy-Walker malformation was confirmed with MRI, but diagnostic imaging could not be reported here because the owner did not consent to publication. The Dandy-Walker malformations described in these three Polish hunting dogs had a stable disease course and revealed that dogs suffering from this condition may have a good quality of life, providing no other abnormalities are detected and rehabilitation is performed.

Abstract:
A 5-year-old spayed female German shepherd dog was admitted with a history of generalized stiffness. Neurologic examination revealed mild paraparesis with multifocal spinal pain. Spinal radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging revealed diskospondylitis at L6-7 and multiple sites throughout the thoracolumbar spine. Biopsy of the intervertebral disk at L6-7 revealed a positive culture forAspergillusspecies, and the dog was placed on itraconazole indefinitely. Clinical signs were significantly improved after two weeks of itraconazole. The dog was reevaluated 8 years later for unrelated reasons. No spinal pain was detected. Spinal radiographs revealed a fused L6-7 disk space and collapsed and sclerotic disk spaces at multiple sites. Itraconazole was tolerated by the dog with normal yearly liver enzyme values. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of successful long-term use of itraconazole for the treatment ofAspergillusdiskospondylitis in a dog.

Abstract:
Abstract Animal-assisted activities (AAA) and therapy standards of practice have been published to protect the well-being of animals, animal handlers, and the special populations of patients that benefit from this mode of treatment. Inconsistencies among practice standards with concerns surrounding the topics of dog welfare, human well-being, and zoonotic transmission have been reported. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to review published AAA and therapy standards with older adult populations for best practices, conduct focus group sessions with caregivers from long-term care facilities that allow therapy dog visitation, and synthesize findings into an AAA checklist to be used by long-term care facility decision-makers when interviewing or bringing in therapy dog teams. Comparative analyses utilizing a systematic and sequential approach was used to analyze the data from the focus group sessions. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, only two focus group sessions at one long-term care facility were conducted resulting in a total of 15 caregivers. Four themes emerged from the data: promotes positive mood, essential resident screenings, caregiver roles, and memory aides. Relevant themes and AAA and therapy standards and guidelines were then combined in the development of the AAA/Therapy Dog Checklist. Administrators may find having a user-friendly AAA/therapy dog checklist a useful tool that can be used when interviewing therapy dog teams to ensure future dog therapy experiences will be positive and safe. The safety and well-being of residents in long-term care facilities and animals are essential to promote positive health outcomes for both populations.

Abstract:
The domestic dog has evolved to be an important biomedical model for studies regarding the genetic basis of disease, morphology and behavior. Genetic studies in the dog have relied on a draft reference genome of a purebred female boxer dog named “Tasha” initially published in 2005. Derived from a Sanger whole genome shotgun sequencing approach coupled with limited clone-based sequencing, the initial assembly and subsequent updates have served as the predominant resource for canine genetics for 15 years. While the initial assembly produced a good-quality draft, as with all assemblies produced at the time, it contained gaps, assembly errors and missing sequences, particularly in GC-rich regions, which are found at many promoters and in the first exons of protein-coding genes. Here, we present Dog10K_Boxer_Tasha_1.0, an improved chromosome-level highly contiguous genome assembly of Tasha created with long-read technologies that increases sequence contiguity >100-fold, closes >23,000 gaps of the CanFam3.1 reference assembly and improves gene annotation by identifying >1200 new protein-coding transcripts. The assembly and annotation are available at NCBI under the accession GCF_000002285.5.

Abstract:
A vaginal foreign body consisting of a piece of retained calvarium from a macerated fetus was identified and removed using vaginoscopy in a 4-year-old, spayed female bulldog. The dog had a 12-month history of chronic mucopurulent vaginitis. Vaginal foreign bodies, although uncommon, are a differential diagnosis for recurrent mucopurulent or hemorrhagic chronic vaginal discharge. A case of chronic vaginitis caused by a long-retained intravaginal foreign body in a dog is described and compared to four other canine cases reported in the literature.

SUMMARY Aim of this work – to perform morphometric analysis of the long bones of the foreleg of raccoon dogs and red foxes. To determine the differences between the sorts and sexes according to the data got. Long bones of 12 adult raccoon dogs and red foxes, kept at the Department of Anatomy and Physiology of Academy of Veterinary of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, have been analysed: 6 – of raccoon dogs (3 females, 3 males), 6 – of red foxes (3 females, 3 males). Humerus, forearm bones (radius and ulna), and metacarpal bones have been investigated. Bones have been measured according to (Bisaillon A., De Roth L., 1979) method, using mechanical calliper (precision of 0.1 mm). Seven indexes of the bones have been measured according to the data got. When the long bones of female and male raccoon dogs and red foxes have been measured and compared, it has been determined that humerus, forearm and metacarpal bones of the male foxes are longer compared to the female foxes. Significant differences of the bone width have not been determined. Humerus and radius of the male raccoon dogs are longer compared to the female raccoon dogs. Ulna of the female raccoon dogs is longer compared to the male raccoon dogs. Length and width of the metacarpal bones were different marginally. When compared according to the interspecific point of view, long bones of the male foxes are longer than bones of the raccoon dogs. There were no essential differences between widths of the bones...
ABSTRACT - Due to the increasing popularity of the brachycephalic breads, particularly the ones with more extreme conformation (e.g. French Bulldog), brachycephalic obstructive syndrome (BOS) cases tend to become more common. This retrospective study, reports long-term outcome of dogs that underwent permanent tracheostomy secondary to laryngeal collapse due to BOS. Data from 6 cases was collected from medical records of the University of Ghent Veterinary Hospital, over a 10-year period (2005-2015). Patients history was followed and reviewed including: Age when diagnosed with BOS, primary and secondary anatomic BOS changes, age when submitted to permanent tracheostomy, major and minor complications, animal health at the time of study, survival time, owners perception of the patients quality of life previously and after permanent tracheostomy. Complications occurred in all the patients, 66,67% of those had major complications, these underwent revision surgery at least once, however one of the patients had 4 revision interventions. One of the patients died acutely at home, which was thought to be due to asphyxiation. Mean survival time was 662 days. The owners reported an increase of 1,83, on a scale from 1 to 5, in the patient’s quality of life posterior to the permanent tracheostomy. Permanent tracheostomy is a last resource therapy indicated in animals with laryngeal collapse stage III, clinicians and owners should expect complication, revision surgeries and cases of acute death.

Abstract:
This thesis is interested in the natural gas price definition in Europe following the process of liberalisation: can it be defined via a market price and therefore be disconnected from the traditional model of long term contracts? Our work shows that the unique use of a market price is not feasible. The characteristics of the sector set to continue using long term contracts to ensure long term security of supply. However, spot markets are fundamentals for the short term security of supply and for giving a price signal reflecting gas to gas competition. But for this to be true, it is recommended to remove the flexibility clauses from these long term contracts. Those contracts also need to be more indexed on spot prices. An illustration is given. At last, the use of Forward prices is questioned. Such a market would enable competition development and security of supply

Abstract:
This study tries to explain the long term growth of the Moroccan state (1913-1985) in order to understand the current problems of the control of the public expenditure. This growth is characterized by large current expenditure, by a current concentration on three fields (education, defense and debt) and by the importance and the inductive role of the external financing due to a low mobilization of internal savings and to an increasing debt. The facts show that this growth of the public expenditure is not only due to modification of population, prices or of the national product, but has other structural determinations. A theoretic study of the state nature, of its role and its link with the economy is thus required to draw the explanation which justifies and organizes these facts. This study, to be "productive", must be dissociated from the universal die of the "orthodox" theses with their underlying determinism in order to understand within a specific die the capitalist nature of the modern state in Morocco. From this process of widening of the capitalist relationships the state increases in size and content within the context of the dependence towards the mondial economy

The central subject of the present work is the representation of the third age, aging and the care to be taken by professionals, who work in homes for the aged. The way of representing the concerned subject is understood as inherent to the proper caring, considering it a phenomenon of the relationship between both protagonists: the one who cares and the one is being cared of. After the textual research on the topic, an ethnological case study was carried out in a home in the city of São Paulo. Subjects of this research were all professionals involved in the institution, since the caring permeates all levels of institutional services, not being limited to the nursing alone. As part of the field work, interviews were conducted along with participant observation. Analysis and methodology were based on the articulation between psychoanalysis and social anthropology, as found in the area of collective health as regards to the human and social phenomenon based on symbolic registries, which organize the world according to significations, attributes defined by social rules. Following the description of the field work, the collected data was analysed in three large themes: (1) work and institutional relations; (2) designations and conceptions of the aged, the third age and the aging process and (3) the institutional caring: gift and method. The organizational structure of the institution, based on charitable and biomedical assistance, turned out to be a crucial aspect for the caring of the aged, by associating knowledge and gift (as a given talent) uniquely with the professionals, while considering the elderly person as someone helpless, needy of assistance. The use of “politically correct” terms contributes to the gap between the professional and the third age of the resident, as if the elderly persons themselves were not present in the institution. This field work shed light on questions raised in the textual inquiry, opening paths and suggestions for further studies that could aid to confront the innumerable challenges related to the caring of the aged as a public health problem.

Abstract:
Although the main place of the small and medium industrial firms in Cameroon new economical policy as the foundment of industrialization and socio-economic development of this country, the available researches on the nature of the management of these enterprises are rare. This contribution which shows up the difficulties of stable financing of small and medium camerooninan firms of the industrial sector, are welcome for the country economic situation. To be efficient financial and economic environment of these firms should be improved as whole. An increase of stable financing of small and medium industrial cameroonian firms should require amont other to : mobilize domestic savings and improve his granting by the transformation of financial system. Promote birth of mutual system by the implementation of "banques populaires". The reasons of this implementation stem form the fact that most enterprises set up and managed by the Camerronians depend on the familial base of the entrepreneur

Abstract:
AbstractDogs have for long been humans’ best friend, but the human–dog relationship can be problematic. A mismatch between dogs and their keepers can lead to welfare problems for both; for example: breeding for a specific look can result in health and welfare problems and importing dogs from other countries can lead to zoonoses. In our view, many of these problems could be avoided if wannabe dog keepers reflected better before deciding to obtain a specific dog. Attempting to influence this decision, however, assumes that we know what the right choice is. In this chapter, we discuss three cases: pups with pedigrees, pups without pedigrees, and adult dogs from (foreign) shelters. We show that, in each case, certain moral assumptions are made whose legitimacy can be problematised. We conclude that the decision about what dog to obtain is not a straightforward one and that it is often difficult to establish what is actually the right choice. However, we also pinpoint certain improvements that can be made to the current system and make a number of suggestions that make the right choice the easier choice. As Anthropocene conditions may lead to the domestication of an increasing number of wild species in the future, this analysis may support reflection on the ethical implications of domestication.

Abstract:
Abstract Until its 1994 genocide, Rwanda was among the world’s most obscure countries: a tiny dot on the map of Africa, rarely studied, even more rarely in the news. Today, no country in Africa divides opinion among scholars and commentators as fiercely as Rwanda. A development success, rising from the ashes of mass ethnic slaughter? Or a case of autocratic recidivism, masked by a bogus narrative of national unity? This chapter breaks Rwanda’s highly contested peacebuilding into four main parts—military, society, economy, and youth & women—to put some distance between its tangible gains and failings, on one hand, and the presumed aims and personality of President Paul Kagame, on the other. It finds that Rwanda is a complex—but by no means secure—success.

Abstract:
In recent years, there have been more and more seismic retrofit applications of using base isolators in seismic prone regions. In the past, the focuses of researches on the efficiency of various base isolators have been aimed at their behavior under earthquakes without long predominant periods. The doubts of efficiency of the base isolator nearby active faults or located at a soft deposit soil have been raised by researchers. It is revealed from previous studies that the seismic responses of the base isolated structure are significant due to the influence of resonance. In order to minimize the inherent shortcomings of base isolators, various base isolators with dog bone type of friction behavior have been proposed in this study. In the meanwhile, the exact solutions used to describe the behavior of the proposed isolators have also been derived in this study. The numerical studies show that the displacement responses of proposed isolators under near fault earthquakes and ground motions with long predominant periods are much lower than those of the traditional FPS and VCFPS devices. Hence, the required dimensions of proposed isolators can be smaller than those for the FPS and VCFPS isolators.

Abstract:
On-chip isoelectric focusing (IEF) has been performed in both straight and dog-leg microchannels. Three-dimensional microfluidic chips were fabricated on poly di-methyl-siloxane (PDMS) using soft lithography and multilayer bonding techniques. Plasma oxidized PDMS channel surfaces were dynamically coated with methyl cellulose to discourage electroosmotic flow during separation and purification processes. In a straight microchannel, IEF was completed within 5 minutes at an applied electric field strength of 50 V/cm using broad range ampholytes. The focused bands were generally well-formed with sharp edges and were less than 100 microns across yielding a putative peak capacity in excess of 100 peaks in a 2-cm long channel. However, the conventional IEF protocol shifts the focused bands toward the cathodic well. This cathodic drift can be effectively minimized by placing highly viscous polymer solutions in the electrode reservoirs. In dog-leg microchannels, initially well formed focused band dispersed at the Tee-channel junction, but refocused at the dog-leg channels with relatively lower resolution.

Abstract:
A new model suitable for the quantitation of Li vivo thrombolytic efficacy was developed which has significant advantages over currently available models. This model allows animals to be used repeatedly and produces data that are less variable. This is a species-independent model utilizing an arterio-venous shunt (AVS). This model was used in rabbits (3 kg) and beagle dogs (13 kg). Each animal was used repeatedly during a 7 day experimental period without evidence of antibody formation. Clot lysis data are less variable than the rabbit jugular vein clot lysis model (RJV). The average coefficient of variation at all doses ([SD/Mean]×l00) with the AVS model was 13±9 and 21±6 for dogs and rabbits, respectively, compared to 25±11 for the RJV model. The rate of data accunulation with the AVS is 3-fold greater than the RJV.In the dog, catheters (25 cm long, 1.6 mm ID) were placed in the jugular vein and the carotid artery, tunneled under the skin to the back of the neck, exteriorized and plugged with a heparin lock. Thrombi were made from a donor dog by placing 0.7 ml of whole blood in a 1 cc plastic syringe barrel containing a cotton thread. The blood was clotted for 2 hr at 37.5 deg C, in vitro. The thrombus was rinsed and the syringe barrel was connected into the circulation by silicone tubing for a 90 min test period. Clot lysis was determined by weight. The flow rate across the thrombus was regulated to 60 ml/min by placing a teflon capillary tube (30 cm, o.7 mm OD) on the venous side. The procedure for the rabbit study differed as follows: Rabbit blood made larger clots therefore the blood was diluted with saline (4 to 1). Clots were incubated 90 min in vitro. The flow rate was 40 ml/min. Clot lysis was measured by the loss of 125-1 fibrinogen. The dose of reccminant t-PA (ActivaseR, Actilyse™) that achieved 40% lysis (ED40) was determined to be 180 ugAg in the dog and 660 ugAg in the rabbit AVS model. Using the RJV model the ED40 was 340 ug/kg.

Abstract:
Abstract Polymer components have been proposed for use in domestic solar hot water heating systems. A polymer heat exchanger is under development for such systems. For heat transfer considerations, the heat exchanger will be comprised of many thin walled tubes. The heat exchanger must survive 10 years of service at high pressure (1.55 MPa) and high temperature (82°C). A novel method has been developed for evaluating the long term performance (creep) of the polymer tubing. Traditional creep testing, performed with dog bone test specimens can not be applied because the thin walled tubing has anisotropic material properties. Consequently, performance must be evaluated directly on the extruded tubing. The method entails wrapping a Constantan wire around the tube specimen to continuously record the hoop strain. For pressure loading of tubing, this method offers significant improvements over strain gage instrumentation. In this paper, the test method is described, an analysis of the strain transfer between the tubing and wire wrap is presented, and strain data for polypropylene tubing measured with a strain gage and wire wrap are compared. The data show that the wire measurement method can be successfully used for the characterization of long term mechanical behavior of polymer tubes.

Abstract:
Abstract Open Hole Stand-Alone-Screen (OHSAS) design have been used in the oil & gas industries to monetize unconsolidated reservoirs. Design steps includes optimum screen selection, drill in fluid & breaker design, running in hole procedures, bean up plan & post tie in monitoring. This paper will discuss in detail on overall strategy implemented during OHSAS deployment in Field A, involving 4 horizontal oil wells in AABB reservoir & its post-production results. OHSAS is selected based on sonic travel time info showing >90usec/ft, Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) value ranging from 3000-5000psi & historical sand production. History from offset wells completed with pre-perforated liners, suggested 8 out of 9 wells had history of sand production once producing with high water cut. Screen selections was design based on Particle Size Distribution (PSD) data performed through Laser Particle Size Analysis (LPSA) & Sieve Analysis using samples from conventional & side wall cores. Several samples were then selected to execute the sand retention test (SRT) on different screen sizes & types. Screen placements across the horizontal open hole was designed into segmented zones with swell packer & Autonomous Inflow Control Device (AICD) were used to balance flow contributions along the horizontal sections and GOR control. Modelling work was performed to decide on well segmentation, sensitivity on rates, pressure drop across completion and erosional risks assessments. Selection of drill in fluid & breaker fluid system were designed to ensure the horizontal segment can be drilled effectively with optimum bridging, less susceptible to formation damage & screen plugging. Lab tests conducted to facilitate selections for all wells were production screen test, Permeability Plugging Test & Return Permeability Testing using core samples. OHSAS deployments were strategized to avoid stuck risks associated through dog leg severity management, torque & drag analysis with deployment of optimum centralizer placements to reduce dragged & placement of optimum number of swell packers. Optimization on lower completion were performed based on actual logging resu lts to improve overall well performance through isolation of shaly or gassy segment using blanks, use of tandem swell packer in gas segment & use of optimum AICD valve numbers. Post completion, specific bean up program was followed to ensure natural sand packing is properly established in the annular space between screen face and the open hole segment within allowable drawdown. Real time monitoring on flowing parameters especially bottomhole pressure through PDG & sand rate (if any) were performed during well tests. Multi rate test & Pressure build up (PBU) test verified that all 4 wells were able to meet at least 20% higher production rates than plan, with no major sand productions produced at surface. The holistic approach outlined in this paper is important in achieving long lasting application of OHSAS in unconsolidated reservoir right from design to production phase.

Abstract:
Shape memory polymers (SMPs) have been developed as an emerging technology platform for biomedical applications in the past decades. In particular, SMPs are clinically essential for the development of novel medical devices to significantly improve long-term surgical outcomes. In this paper, we synthesized and characterized thermally-activated aliphatic urethane SMPs fabricated with nanocomposites for the design and development of biomedical devices. The thermal activation of shape memory function was investigated by direct thermal activation. Critical polymer properties, such as the glass transition temperature and shape memory function, have been tailored to desired applications, by adjusting the polymer composition. Carbon nanotubes were uniformly dispersed within the polymer during nanocomposite fabrication to significantly enhance the thermal and electrical properties. The synthesized SMPs and nanocomposites were characterized to understand their thermal and mechanical properties using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Scanning electron microscopy was employed to evaluate the dispersion of carbon nanotubes in polymer matrix. The mechanical properties of SMPs and nanocomposites at temperature above their glass transition temperature were evaluated using dog-bone samples in a dual-column mechanical testing system and an environmental chamber. SMPs and nanocomposites will then be fabricated in the form of foam for the development of novel devices applicable to endovascular embolization of cerebral aneurysms.

Abstract:
A Grant Agreement between the Government of Australia and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the Stop Transboundary Animal Diseases and Zoonoses (STANDZ), initiative includes a rabies component with an overarching intended outcome of reducing dog rabies incidence in targeted areas. This initiative envisaged regional rabies activities in South-East Asia as well as specifically designed pilot projects in the Philippines, Myanmar and Cambodia. While remaining anchored to the envisioned outcome, its implementation from 2013 to 2016 also leveraged on the resources made available through the initiative to strategically generate tools, materials and examples that can potentially bridge long-standing gaps on dog rabies elimination in the region. This included developing approaches on rabies communication strategy, risk-based approach for the prioritization of mass dog vaccination, rabies case investigation, post-vaccination monitoring, building capacity through pilot vaccination projects, One Health operationalization at the grass-root level, and reinforcing high-level political support through regional and national rabies strategy development. These are briefly described in this paper and are also further detailed in a series of publications which individually document these approaches for future utility of the countries in the region, or wherever these may be deemed fitting. The STANDZ rabies initiative leaves behind a legacy of materials and mechanisms that can potentially contribute in strategically addressing rabies in the region and in achieving the global vision of eliminating dog-mediated human rabies by 2030.
