Although the majority of passerine birds are socially monogamous, true genetic monogamy is rare, with extra-pair paternity (EPP) occurring in almost 90% of surveyed socially monogamous species. We present the first molecular data on the genetic breeding system of the long-tailed finch,Poephila acuticauda, a grass finch endemic to the tropical northern savannah of Australia. Although the species forms socially monogamous pair bonds during the breeding season, we found that extra-pair males sired 12.8% of 391 offspring, in 25.7% of 101 broods. The modelling issue of long length scale unsteadiness in turbomachines is discussed in this paper and a new three-dimensional CFD method with a hierarchy of body force models is proposed. A program has been developed to deal with the long length scale problem using efficient coarse meshes and large time steps, together with body force models. The distributed viscous body force can be calculated either using a very simple viscous wall shear stress model or extracted from a ‘stand-alone’ three-dimensional single passage steady calculation using a fine mesh. Based on such interpretation of the cracking phenomenon in asphalt concrete mixtures, researchers have been using the fine aggregate matrices (FAMs) to estimate the fatigue behavior of the asphalt concrete. AbstractWe present a framework to verify both, functional correctness and worst-case complexity of practically efficient algorithms. We implemented a stepwise refinement approach, using the novel concept of resource currencies to naturally structure the resource analysis along the refinement chain, and allow a fine-grained analysis of operation counts. Our framework targets the LLVM intermediate representation. We extend its semantics from earlier work with a cost model. As case study, we verify the correctness and $$O(n\log n)$$ O ( n log n ) worst-case complexity of an implementation of the introsort algorithm, whose performance is on par with the state-of-the-art implementation found in the GNU C++ Library.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this paper, we present a multimodal deep model for detection of abnormal activity, based on bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory neural networks (LSTM). The proposed model exploits three different input modalities: RGB imagery, thermographic imagery and Channel State Information from Wi-Fi signal reflectance to estimate human intrusion and suspicious activity. The fused multimodal information is used as input in a Bidirectional LSTM, which has the benefit of being able to capture temporal interdependencies in both past and future time instances, a significant aspect in the discussed unusual activity detection scenario. We also present a Bayesian optimization framework that fine-tunes the Bidirectional LSTM parameters in an optimal manner. The proposed framework is evaluated on real-world data from a critical water infrastructure protection and monitoring scenario and the results indicate a superior performance compared to other unimodal and multimodal approaches and classification models.

Abstract:
AbstractAn ‘inclusive citizen science’ practice encourages engagement from all members of society, whatever their social status, sociocultural origin, gender, religious affiliation, literacy level, or age. In this chapter we will first address the question of inclusiveness in citizen science and how this is tackled. We will analyse the current situation of a number of projects and initiatives within the Citizen Science COST Action CA15212 and the Horizon 2020 SwafS programme, examine the data, and discuss the main factors that encourage or hinder inclusiveness. We will offer recommendations for a possible plural participation in citizen science activities and reflect on how research is improved when diverse citizens are used as in-the-field experts. We will demonstrate how research questions can be fine-tuned and how research impacts are enhanced through citizen participation, with a focus on gender representation. Bottlenecks can occur when considering inclusiveness in citizen science, including in data interpretation, tasks that require long-term participation, and tasks that have specific language and intermediation requirements.
