Takeyasu, Hajime, and Mikio Giriko. Effects of duration and phonological length of the preceding/following segments on perception of the length contrast in Japanese. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198754930.003.0005.

Abstract:
This chapter assesses the influence of preceding vowel duration on the perception of singleton/geminate stops in Japanese. Through a perception experiment, it is shown that the identification of consonant length (singleton/geminate) is affected by both the physical duration and the phonological length of the preceding vowel, the former being an ‘assimilative’ effect and the latter being a ‘contrastive’ effect. The physical duration and the phonological length of the following consonant affect the identification of vowel length (short/long), but the former effect is not observable when the following consonant is perceived as geminate. Results of a production experiment also demonstrate that the effects of preceding vowel duration in speech perception are parallel to the contextual variations in preceding vowel duration in speech production.

Abstract:
Japanese displays a singleton/geminate contrast in obstruents and nasals, but not in glides. Patterns of emphatic gemination show that Japanese avoids creating new nasal geminates. This chapter tests hypotheses about why Japanese shows these preferences. Concerning the distinction between obstruent geminates and sonorant geminates, dispreference of sonorant geminates may exist because these geminates are easily confused with corresponding singletons. This confusability problem arises because sonorants are spectrally continuous with flanking vowels, and consequently perception of their constriction durations is difficult. Two non-speech perception experiments show that length distinctions of consonant intervals that are spectrally continuous with surrounding segments are difficult to perceive. Concerning the difference between nasal geminates and glide geminates, two further non-speech experiments show that amplitude changes facilitate discrimination and categorization of short/long contrasts. Overall, the results of the four perception experiments reported here accord well with the cross-linguistic phonological patterning of geminates.

Edited by Michael A. Hitt, Susan E. Jackson, Salvador Carmona, Leonard Bierman, Christina E. Shalley, and Douglas Michael Wright. Abstract:
How do capabilities-based resources focused on customers, supply chains, and how does innovation impact a firm’s strategic assets and performance? We develop a framework to (1) test strategic resource allocations as investments in future opportunities, (2) examine the influences of strategic resources on strategic assets, and (3) study the effects of strategic assets on performance. The model incorporates data from a 12-year period to examine the lagged effects over a “strategic” length period. The results show that the resources that affect assets include business-to-customer (B2C) marketing expenditures, sourcing attentiveness, inventory readiness, production capacity, and overall innovation creativity. Customer satisfaction and brand equity are two firm-level strategic assets that influence financial performance. The robustness of the overall results was also examined in two technological contexts (low/stable vs. high tech).

Scully, Stephen. Hesiodic Poetics. Edited by Alexander C. Loney and Stephen Scully. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190209032.013.10.

Full text
Abstract:
In terms of poetics, the contest between Hesiod and Homer seems simultaneously natural and surprising: natural because both of them composed in the artificial “song dialect” and highly formulaic medium of epea, and surprising because Homer’s long, heroic poetry differed so greatly in voice, theme, length, structure, and style from Hesiod’s much shorter, catalogic narrative poetry or from his didactic poetry. This chapter examines Hesiod’s poetry alongside Homer’s in terms of voice and theme, length and form, and style and genealogical lists. With examples from both singers, I propose that it may be a stylistic feature of catalogic poetry to interweave the personified names in a list with the corresponding lowercase words (nouns, verbs, adjectives) in the surrounding narrative. I also propose that, to a greater extent than Homer, Hesiod, with his fondness for word play and etymological punning, draws attention upon individual words.

Abstract:
The length of work matters to both workers and employers. What happens to output when hours are extended? What happens to a worker’s well-being when hours are extended? What fraction of workers work long hours today and who are these workers? As the book’s introduction, the author explains his approach to these questions, the types of evidence he presents in later chapters, and his arguments for why some common approaches to this subject neglect confounding issues. A principal goal of the research presented in this monograph is to document the consequences of long working hours. Statistical analysis of hours in augmented with testimonies from workers.
