Abstract:
Even before the financial crisis of 2007/8, there were questions about Europe’s long-term growth prospects. Since the mid-1990s, Euro area productivity growth had been falling behind that of the United States. Using data for the period 1970–2006, authors identified declining European rates of total factor productivity growth and weaker capital accumulation as areas for concern. Updating this earlier analysis, authors find that growth prospects for the euro area have deteriorated further; that Europe’s demographics are also contributing to a decline in the workforce. Thus a long-term projection

Abstract:
Chapter 6 unpicks the long-term dynamics of occupational mobility or immobility of daladala workers. By drawing on the list of the 121 transport workers who were members of the association in 2002, and by tracking their occupational whereabouts in 2009 and again in 2014, the chapter asks to what extent work as a daladalaman, notwithstanding its hardship and insecurity, fuelled dynamics of micro-accumulation and upward mobility. Semi-structured interviews with twenty-five of these workers aim to elicit workers’ own views on their own occupational trajectory and on the strategies they have used

Abstract:
Niemann-Pick disease type B (NPDB) is caused by deficient activity of sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase leading to the accumulation of sphingomyelin and other lipids, primarily within macrophages. The disease is characterised by hepatosplenomegaly, a bleeding tendency, interstitial lung disease and an atherogenic lipid profile. The diagnosis of NPDB is usually made in childhood after organomegaly is noted, and patients often survive into adulthood. The diagnostic work up includes enzymatic determination of sphingomyelinase activity, mutational analysis and screening and/or quantification for tar

Abstract:
This chapter applies the Leadership Capital Index (LCI) to Canada, focusing on the experience of two recent prime ministers, Paul Martin and Stephen Harper. While leadership capital may initially seem less important in the Canadian system, where leaders appear all-powerful with few party or parliamentary restraints, it remains important in explaining how leaders adapt, or fail to adapt, to their circumstances. The chapter contrasts two recent prime ministers, Stephen Harper and Paul Martin, and demonstrates their very different accumulation and spending of leadership capital. Martin came into

The study of long-term growth in Africa has recently been invigorated by the work of economists. To date, this literature has been motivated by explaining a divergence of income and has focused on finding persistent factors that can explain a chronic failure of growth in Africa. This chapter reviews some periods of economic growth in the past two centuries, and suggests that there must be more to learn from studying these periods of economic change and accumulation, particularly because they were accompanied by significant changes in institutions, or how the economy and the society was organiz

Prevailing attitudes and conviction maintain that anaesthetic management, while ensuring safety, analgesia, and comfort perioperatively, has little influence on long-term patient outcomes. Gradually accumulating evidence is challenging this conventional wisdom, suggesting that choice of anaesthetic technique and perioperative management may, on the contrary, exert previously unrecognized long-term influences. This chapter seeks to review topical aspects of anaesthesia management which may influence postoperative patient outcomes. These include cardiovascular and pulmonary outcomes, surgical si

Abstract:
Few, if any phenomena affecting Western Europe as a whole since 1945 have been more far-reaching in their immediate effects or more potentially destabilizing to politics and society over the long term than the accumulative experience of immigration. Messina and his contributors analyze why the major immigrant-receiving states of Western Europe historically permitted and often abetted relatively high levels of postwar migration, and they assess how contemporary governments attempt to govern immigration flows and manage the domestic social and political fallout which it inevitably yields.
