Abstract:
We present a system for recognising human behaviour given a symbolic representation of surveillance videos. The input of our system is a set of time-stamped short-term behaviours, that is, behaviours taking place in a short period of time — walking, running, standing still, etc — detected on video frames. The output of our system is a set of recognised long-term behaviours — fighting, meeting, leaving an object, collapsing, walking, etc — which are pre-defined temporal combinations of short-term behaviours. The definition of a long-term behaviour, including the temporal constraints on the short-term behaviours that, if satisfied, lead to the recognition of the long-term behaviour, is expressed in the Event Calculus. We present experimental results concerning videos with several humans and objects, temporally overlapping and repetitive behaviours. Moreover, we present how machine learning techniques may be employed in order to automatically develop long-term behaviour definitions.

Abstract:
BY Dra has been extensively monitored for flares and spot-modulation of brightness at the Bulgarian National Astronomical Observatory (Panov & Ivanova 1993). Its mean light level exhibited remarkable changes in the past, due to the emergence and disintegration of photospheric spots, and different cycles have been proposed for the long-term changes of the BY Dra activity. This star is still believed to be a good candidate for cyclic variations, presumably similar to the sunspot activity cycle. After a spectacular drop in brightness in 1965 — 1967, and a subsequent rise in the early 70s, the mean light remained approximately constant during 1977 - 1991. A brightening of BY Dra occurred in 1992.In Fig. 1, the light curves are shown for 1991, 1992 and 1993 in the V-band and in B — V. Phases were calculated with the ephemeris of Chugainov (1966):JD (min. light) = 2438983.612 + 3.836 · EFrom Fig. 1, it is apparent that the mean visual light, which was about V = 8.20 in 1991, increased in 1992 by 0m.10, and a further increase by another 0m.03 occurred in 1993. The phase of minimum light in 1992 indicates that the position of the spot remained approximately the same in stellar longitude as in 1991. However, in 1993 the position of the spot changed by almost half a period.

Abstract:
Determination of the rate of mass flow in contact binary systems is one of the most important motives for their observation. Many of these binaries are in over-contact configuration with a common equipotential surface located somewhwere between the inner and outer Lagrangian zero-velocity surfaces. Most are active systems displaying frequent lightcurve and period changes resulting in residuals behaviour depictable by intersecting linear segments.

Abstract:
Phenotypically structured equations arise in population biology to describe the interaction of species with their environment that brings the nutrients. This interaction usually leads to the selection of the fittest individuals. Models used in this area are highly nonlinear, and the question of long-term behaviour is usually not solved. However, there is a particular class of models for which convergence to an evolutionary stable distribution is proved, namely when the quasi-static assumption is made. This means that the environment, and thus the nutrient supply, reacts immediately to the population dynamics. One possible proof is based on a total variation bound for the appropriate quantity. We extend this proof to cases where the nutrient is regenerated gradually. A simple example is the chemostat with a rendering factor, then our result does not use any smallness assumption. For a more general setting, we can treat the case with a fast equilibration of the nutrient concentration.

Abstract:
PurposeThis paper empirically explores the role of skill losses during unemployment behind firms' behaviour in interviewing long-term unemployedDesign/methodology/approachThe analysis makes use of the Work Employment Relations Survey in the UK, while it applies a panel probit modelling approach to estimate the empirical findings.FindingsThe findings document that skill losses during long-term unemployment reduce the likelihood of an interview, while they emphasize the need for certain policies that could compensate for this deterioration of skills. For robustness check, the estimation strategy survives the examination of the same predictors under different types of the working environment.Originality/valueThe original values of the work 1 combines for the first time both duration and technology as predictors of interview probability. Until now, the independent variables were used to test whether an individual has managed to exit unemployment, thus skipping the step of the interview process.

Abstract:
The present research intends to examine the herd behaviour of investors in the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX). Herd behaviour in stock market is sometimes based on fundamental information, which causes quick price adjustments to new information and leads to efficient markets. Still, sometimes it is not dependent on fundamental information and results in price instability. Herding can be a short term phenomenon, but sometimes a longer time span can provide favourable outcomes for the occurrence of herd behaviour. Considering these diverse views, intraday, daily, weekly, and monthly stock prices of 528 companies listed in the PSX have been used to calculate stock returns. Market-wide herd measure, i.e. CSAD, has been used to compute the herd behaviour. Data has been investigated for autocorrelation, heteroscedasticity, and stationarity issues. Findings revealed that herding did not exist in PSX, but some sectors showed this behaviour. Herd behaviour was more likely to exist at a daily level. The tendency of occurrence of the herding phenomenon gradually decreases at intraday and weekly levels. However, herding cannot be taken as a long term phenomenon as just a single sector was evidenced about its existence at the monthly level. Herding is an inherent phenomenon that is very difficult to eliminate from the stock market completely. However, knowledge and information sharing can guide investors to improve this behaviour Keywords: Herd Behaviour, Behavioural Finance, Return Dispersions, Pakistan Stock Exchange, CSAD

Abstract:
AbstractQuiescent novae are more stable against mass transfer rate than dwarf novae. They may however show cyclical variations of their quiescent magnitudes on time scales of years, probably caused by solar–type cycles of activity of the secondary. The probability density function of the periods of the cycles observed in CVs is similar to that for single stars. Sometimes, periodic or quasi periodic light variations on time scales of tens to hundreds of days are also observed. Although the magnitudes of prenovae and postnovae are essentially the same, the definition of the magnitude of a quiescent nova is still uncertain. At present, the hibernation theory for old novae seems to be supported only by the observations of two very old novae.

Abstract:
There is increasing concern among professionals and the public about the level of violence and antisocial behaviour among our youth. This has been coupled with confusion and a sense of helplessness about which types of interventions are most effective in responding to these difficulties. Some professionals and advocacy groups are calling for tougher disciplinary responses to violence and antisocial behaviour, including changes in the Young Offenders Act Yet, such interventions are rarely effective in producing the desired reductions in these behaviours. Other professionals have called for better forms of treatment. However, few treatments have been shown to be effective in bringing about long term reductions either in aggressive behaviour or in the concomitant psychological difficulties experienced by these youths. In this paper, a description is presented of an approach to understanding conduct disorder that focuses on attachment as an organizing principle of behaviour and affect. Also, a description is presented of a community-oriented program that is based on attachment theory, as well as the results of the program evaluation at six, 12 and 18 months following discharge. The findings replicate and extend earlier findings reported by Holland et al (1) on the effectiveness of this approach.

Abstract:
Bullying is the systematic abuse of power and is defined as aggressive behaviour or intentional harm-doing by peers that is carried out repeatedly and involves an imbalance of power. Being bullied is still often wrongly considered as a ‘normal rite of passage’. This review considers the importance of bullying as a major risk factor for poor physical and mental health and reduced adaptation to adult roles including forming lasting relationships, integrating into work and being economically independent. Bullying by peers has been mostly ignored by health professionals but should be considered as a significant risk factor and safeguarding issue.

Abstract:
A randomised controlled trial was conducted to investigate the long-term and short-term effects of the Snoezelen environment on the behaviour, mood and cognition of elderly patients with dementia, and to gain an understanding of the processes occurring within Snoezelen. Patients participated in either eight Snoezelen or eight activity sessions. Pre-trial, mid-trial, post-trial and follow-up assessments were carried out at home and at the day hospital. Ratings of behaviour and mood were also made before, during and after each session. In the long term, the main benefits for Snoezelen patients were in the domain of socially disturbed behaviour. In the home setting, there was a highly significant difference between the two groups in favour of Snoezelen, and in the hospital setting it was nearly significant. Short-term improvements in behaviour and mood were evident for both groups after sessions, and communication was significantly better during Snoezelen sessions in comparison with activity sessions. The processes occurring within Snoezelen sessions seemed to involve facilitation of verbal expression and memory recall.

Abstract:
Since 1999 a UF plant with a mean throughput of 1.3 ML/d has been in operation treating surface water from a reservoir and springwater for drinking water supply. A three-year DVGW (German Water Works Association) research project accompanies the operation in order to gather data of the membranes' life time, their operational efficiency, the dependence of transmembrane pressure (TMP) on raw water quality (e.g. turbidity, particle count, concentrations of algae, natural organic matter) and the waste water demand. During operation TMP increased with increasing raw water turbidity and algae content and decreasing temperature as expected. Waste water demand has been minimised by decreasing the backwash frequency. A chemical cleaning showed not much effect with regard to TMP although waste water contained rather high amounts of suspended solids and dissolved organic matter. Bubble test for integrity showed that almost all membranes were still integral.
