Abstract:
IN earlier issues Broad-Spectrum-Academics’ Essays have covered Cane Toads (Bufo marinus), squirrels, the media and the universe. Rick Shine wrote as a herpetologist and as a leader in ecological field-research while Fred Watson wrote as an astronomer engaging us with rocket science, telescopes and a squirrel living in an Arizonan mountain-top. Both these luminaries have one obvious thing in common with the author in this issue: they have been doing it for a long time.

Abstract:
Abstract Several recent papers have reinvigorated a chronic concern about the need for ecological science to focus more on long-term research. For a few decades, significant voices among ecologists have been assembling elements of a case in favor of long-term ecological research. In this article and for the first time, we synthesize the elements of this case and present it in succinct form. We also argue that this case is unlikely to result in more long-term research. Finally, we present ideas that, if implemented, are more likely to result in appropriate levels of investment in long-term rese

Abstract:
Abstract Detecting and understanding disturbance is a challenge in ecology that has grown more critical with global environmental change and the emergence of research on social–ecological systems. We identify three areas of research need: developing a flexible framework that incorporates feedback loops between social and ecological systems, anticipating whether a disturbance will change vulnerability to other environmental drivers, and incorporating changes in system sensitivity to disturbance in the face of global changes in environmental drivers. In the present article, we review how discove

SEVERAL times a year, every year for the last two decades, members of the Desert Ecology Research Group at the University of Sydney have made the long trek to the Simpson Desert in central Australia to continue biological monitoring and carry out experiments on a range of ecological and conservation-related topics. This is long-haul research: long-term biological sampling and experimental work that takes place in distant study sites. This kind of research is unusual in that much ecological inquiry takes place close to home and is completed over short periods — typically three years, which is t
